Apply effect to an area of the video - eg, blur a license plate

Hello,
Is it possible to apply an effect to an area on the screen? Eg blur a license plate or someone's face?

Hi(Bonjour)!
Yes it's possible to apply any effect on area of a clip only. Simply duplicate the footage in timeline, apply the filter and use a 4 or 8 point garbage matte to isolate the desired portion.
For blur/witness protection, there are many free plugins on the WEB that apply witness protection/blur on the clip like Andy's region blur:

  • Letting effects extend past size of the video.

Hey guys, and thanks for trying to help me out!
I am new to After Effects, so if you can help me out, be as detailed as possible. Thanks!
This is a problem I've had multiple times, but it usually goes: I import a video (image). And I add some effects. But the effects don't affect the composition beyond the individual perimeters of the video.
    Here's an example below:
When I added the blur and glow, it gets clipped off at the top because that's the size of the image. Which is weird because I'm applying it TO the image... so the entire image should be effected. However, it's getting clipped at the top.
Anyways, I was hoping there would be a way to "create a bigger canvas" like you can in photoshop where it just extends the canvas in whichever direction you need it to be extended. Hoping that will help. Or any ideas other than "just crop it to a super wide ratio... and let that be the video ratio".
    Thanks again,

There is a tremendous amount of garbage on YouTube, much of which will mislead and misteach you. I recommend searching within After Effects Help:

  • Applying effects to selective frames in a video clip

Question: What is the best way to add a mask only to certain frames in clips of a sequence on Premier Pro CC using After Effects (i.e., a single frame mode)?
I am trying to fix a keyed video, but only need to fix frames here and there and  do not want to animate it.
In the past, I have used the following methodology:
SUMMARY: Remove, modify, render, export, and then re-insert each frame that needs to be fixed (one by one) starting in Premiere Pro (CS5, CS6, or CC) and using After Effects (CS5, CS6, or CC) using the following steps:
    1) Open a timeline with the entire video sequence
    2) Cut the frame that needs to be fixed out of the timeline sequence, basically leaving a one frame hole
    3) Apply the mask, filter, or other effect to the frame within After Effects
    4) Export the modified frame in the format of the original sequence (recommended) as a new one frame clip
    5) Import the result back into your open Premiere project
    6) Drop the imported one frame clip back into the original sequence in the spot where it was cut from
    7) Repeat for each frame
    8) Finally, re-export the entire project to the final desired format.
There has to be an easier way than this.
NOTE: The cross-launch function between Premiere Pro (PPro) and After Effects (AE), where a new AE project is opened by selecting this option in a PPro project/sequence, is very confusing and awkward to use, and has never been useful for me when doing other operations such as Color Channel modifications or channel replacement/swapping. So unless there is something within this function that will do the job, and then re-create the new video export faster, then I have ruled using this out.

If you just have a few frames to mask then start your mask in a safe spot just start your mask where you need it to work, animate the mask for the few frames you need, then,  when the mask is no longer needed move forward one frame and move the mask clear off the shot. Copy the mask keyframe, move to the first keyframe for that mask and then back one more frame and paste. Your mask will now be off the shot completely, jump into position when needed, then jump back off the shot. Problem solved without splitting layers or doing anything else funky with the shot.
In many cases, if you need a lot of masking to fix a key you can solve the problem with another instance of your keyed (Keylight) on a duplicate layer and then use that copy as a track matte for the first. I do this all the time. Sometimes I'll have as many as 4 or 5 copies of the footage, all keyed differently removing different parts of the background, each with a different garbage matte, and then combining them all using track matte to produce the final plate for compositing.

  • Where are all the Video FX and Audio FX from iMovie HD?

Exactly! I tried looking for them, but all I found were: Music and Sound Effects, Photos, Titles, and Transitions.
iMovie HD had things (under "Editing") such as: Video FX and Audio FX, and also had waaay more choices of Titles, and a couple extra Transitions.
Is there a way that I can find all the stuff iMovie HD had on iMovie '08 without using iMovie HD?

Many reviews of iMovie 08 recommend using both iMovie 08 and iMovie 06 (I do).
When iLife 08 is installed, all of the old applications are automatically deleted EXCEPT iMovie 06, because Apple WANTS you to have it.
The Web site below has a good comparison of iMovie 08 and iMovie 06.
    http://www.geethree.com/slick/imovie8.html
Apple includes iMovie 06 as a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)

Question: When you refer to an app here --
''I've been able to recreate this bug every time by opening a stream in one tab, any other page in the other and then starting the app - freeze every time.''
-- is that a completely unrelated application outside of Firefox, or something in another Firefox window or tab?
If you have not already tried disabling the protected mode feature of the Flash plugin, the following pages/posts provide different ways to do that:

  • Apply effect to selected part of the movie

Hi, I'm working in a movie and I would like to select just a bit (for instance, one minute) and apply and effect to this one-minute part.
    How can I do it?
Thanks very much in advance for your answer

Hi, thanks for your answer. I think I do as you say.
I mark the I and O points. It is highlighted. I dropped the effect on the timeline or on the clip but it affects to all the movie.
I can not see any way to apply it only to the highlighted section. Maybe I'm doing something wrong??? or did I miss anything????
Thanks again. Looking forward to your answer

  • Trying to open a music file and I get the message "cannot open this song until the latest version is in use" (or words to that effect) - but we are using the latest version we have ever had, and the song was created using that version !!! Help !

Hi, hope someone can help me.
I created a music file in my current version of Garageband (2.0.2) but when I try to open the file I am told that I must get the current version of Garageband ?!
Anyone have any ideas why this is happening ?!
    Thanks.
    Paul

What have you done, directly before this problem happened? Have you installed any other software, upgraded software, restored your system from a backup?
The error message can occur, if you have two versions of GarageBand, and now your Dock icon links to the wrong version of the program. Search your Mac for other versions of GarageBand. If you find another installation, check if the version is newer, then use that to open your file.
Another reason may be, that your current GarageBand Application is corrupted. To check that, try to launch GarageBand from a different User account - if you do not have one, create a new account from the System Preferences > Users and Groups panel (this panel might have been called something else in 10.4.11, sorry, I am using 10.8.2 now).
If GarageBand also does not launch from this account, reinstall GarageBand from your installation Media and upgrade - a link to the upgrade is here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL454

  • Have AE7; Problem importing prproj file into pc; get placeholder instead. What do I need to do to open up the video files here. They are .mov in quicktime.

Have AE7; Problem importing prproj file into pc; get placeholder instead. What do I need to do to open up the video files here. They are .mov in quicktime.

Please be more specific. What Premiere project? What version of Premiere? Which operating system? What CoDecs do the QT fiels use? Are all the video files in the correct folders inside the Premiere project structure? Your description sounds like you are attempting to open a Mac based project on a PC and your video files are either in the wrong location or use a Mac-specific CoDec, hence they cannot be read on a PC.

  • After rotobrush, how to make background picture appear in the video when exporting it to PremierePro

I seem to have problems saving/using it with premiere pro. it's a 10 second video of myself with 3 pics: 2 that I put in front of the video and one as a background. In after effects, in the bottom left corner box, the 2 pics are above the video file and the background picture is below it. Still in after effects, the background pic is there behind me and the 2 other pictures are in front of my video which is where everything should be, great. When i save it, then export it to premiere pro, the 2 pics in front are there but not the background pic, the background is just my full video as if I didn't rotobrush it.  Help??
Also, how can i export the project as a file in Avi, mpeg, mp4...?
    Thanks in advance

Hello Mylenium, i do apologize about my ambiguous question. I'm starting to learn how to use it and in some way, i didn't even know what i was talking about myself. But thanks to your help, i now got it.
"When you export an After Effects project as an Adobe Premiere Pro project, Adobe Premiere Pro uses the settings from the first composition in the After Effects project for all subsequent sequences. Keyframes, effects, and other properties are converted in the same way as when you paste an After Effects layer into an Adobe Premiere Pro sequence."
so as it says above, it only uses the initial video. What i did was only render using the rotobrush and i didn't "render queue" the whole project afterwards simply because i didn't know i had to do that. I thought rendering it from rotobrushing it and adding the background effects would be enough.
Again, thank you. and i also learned how to save it in different format, since AVI outputs a huge file size.

  • Horrible final video quality in After Effects CS6 when rendering a 1920x1080 video with H.264 format

I've been using After Effects CS6 on my Macbook Pro for over a year now with no issues. However, today when I exported a video to be rendered in 1920x1080p with H.264 format, I got the worst quality final video I've ever seen. I filmed my video files in 1920x1080p (like usual), and I clicked all the same buttons I normally do to export a video, but every HQ video I try to export looks horrible. I haven't clicked any crazy buttons or anything out of the ordinary.
I always export a video following this sequence:
File > Export > Add to Render Queue > Lossless > H.264 (quality format) > video output (make sure it's checked) > audio output (make sure it's checked) > OK > Output to Desktop
My render settings are always set as "best settings" including "full" resolution and "best" quality.
Now, when I click H.264, a "settings mismatch" pops up and says:
"Warning: Output file will be resized from 1920x1080 (1.00 PAR) to 320x1080 (6.00 PAR) to meet format constraints"
The rendering quality and playback quality within After Effects is great, but once the video is exported, it is horrible.
PLEASE HELP?! I have deadlines I need to meet!

Use the H.264 encoding presets in Adobe Media Encoder.
The H.264 export features in After Effects have been removed in later versions because of numerous problems.

  • Video not playing correctly but sound on the videos does

Hey all. Question for you. Recently my iPod has decided to stop playing the videos shows. The display only shows a picture of the show title (much like the cover art of songs) and the audio plays as if it were playing normally. The files seem good because I can play them on iTunes from the iPod. I can't think of anything differently I have done to it in the last few weeks. It just stopped working suddenly. Any ideas? ANd thanks in advance.

On your iPod go to "Videos / Video Settings".
Then select "TV Out" and either set it to "off" or "ask".
Also, make sure you are accessing the video through the videos menu. If you have a video mixed in an audio playlist and you access it through that, you also won't be able to see the video.

  • What are the video effects used in this video

I was just wondering if anybody could help me. I was intrigued to find out what kind of video effect is used in this video at 0:16 - 0:18 and if theres a name for this type of video and editing used throughout the video such as the continous stream of different videos etc.

Do you mean the distorted lips or the bad tv reception.
The distorted lips can be anything from Bulge to Mesh Warp to Liquefy.
The bad TV reception can be started with the Bad TV Effects Presets that comes with AE. You can modify or edit these as you like.
I know of no specific style name that goes along with any part of this video other than lazy. It looks like nobody had an idea of what they wanted to do so they just shot a bunch of stuff and threw every effect they had in their bag of tricks at the project. Turn off the sound and it's impossible to tell what it is about. I don't mean to be critical but there's not much original here that I haven't seen a zillion times going back to the Video Toaster days. (probably before you were born). It's nothing more than a bunch of quick cuts and jitter.
Load up about 100 layers, trim them do different lengths from 5 to 30 frames, Select half of them, apply Bad TV1 to that bunch, Apply Bad TV2 to the another 10 random layers. Add tint, bulge, to a few more. set a couple of position and rotate keyframes to a few more then add wiggle to those, then use the Keyframe Assistant to sequence the layers and you'll be pretty close. It should take you about 15 minutes.
If you've got a specific question about how they made this jitter or how they made time stutter ask away. If used to tell a story these techniques are all useful. If you just want to create a jarring montage then follow my suggestion in the previous paragraph then run Brainstorm a couple of times.

  • As Soon As Any Effect Is Applied On The Video Or Sequence The Video Playing Speed Gets Faster Than Normal And Red Screen Also Starts Appearing In Between The Video. Tried Changing The Speed And Duration But Its Not Working.Help Required ASAP.

Irregardless of the Premiere Elements version...
I do not believe you are doing anything wrong. I have not found it possible to copy a Timeline clip to which Time Remapping has been applied and use Paste Effects and Adjustments to other selected clips on the Timeline to achieve the same fast or slow motion for more than one clip at a time. For one thing the duration of the Time Remapped clip is different than those that have not gone through Time Remapping.
And, you cannot select more than 1 clip at a time to be taken into the Time Remapping workspace.
Also, special considerations need to exist for Pan and Zoom Tool for its pan and zoom effect applied to more than one photo at a time.
ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE11: Pan & Zoom Tool, More Than One Photo at a Time
I will think about this some more. But, at this moment, it appear to be it is what it is.
