Applying a mask and cropping so exports in Flash

I created a Photoshop CS4 file with about 10 layers which I placed in a group.  I've applied a vector mask to the whole group so all of the pictures are masked in an identical manner.  I also cropped the group to the same size.
When I import this file into Flash CS4, all of the layers are showing up at their original sizes (instead of the size I cropped the group to), and the mask isn't being applied.
Can someone explain the proper way to get this layered file into Flash CS4 with the cropped size and mask intact?
Thanks for the help.

I'm not an expert in photoshop, but I've tried everything I know to apply the mask to multiple layers and was not able to do so, and still maintain separate layers. I selected all the layers first and tried to apply a mask, and that didn't work. Then I grouped all the layers and was still unable to apply a single mask to all layers. The only way I was able to apply a mask to all layers was to flatten the image. Given that you're importing it into flash, I'm assuming that you're animating the various layers to acheive a certain effect. If that's the case, then flattening the image to apply the mask to the entire document at once doesn't make sense. If you're using the entire image without the need for layers, then of course you can flatten the image and then use the mask to make a selection and clear the unwanted parts of the image.
I have to imagine that there's a way to do what you're asking, but with my level of experience, I'm unable to find a way to make it happen. There may be a way to export the file to flash with the layer mask intact, or perhaps there's a way to apply the mask to all layers at once, but I'm unable to find it. I would apply it to each layer individually which may take a few more minutes, as it's the only way I can find.
The only other option I can think of, is to place the entire psd file in a flash document directly. CS5 allows this in After Effects and Premiere Pro, which may keep the mask intact. I don't know enough about Flash to know if that's possible as well, but it's worth a shot.
As a final suggestion, maybe you can do all of your annimation and effects in After Effects, then just save it as a Flash file. I've done this before and it's allowed me to create rather robust annimations and effects without having to learn the more complicated aspects of creating a flash document from scratch.
Hopefully one of the CS5 gurus will see this and point the way to a quicker solution, but this is all I know to do at the moment.
Best of luck with your project.
P.S. To answer the last part of your question, yes, I can only imagine that as a workaround, you can make a selection from the mask and clear the unwanted sections of each layer, and then bring it into Flash.

  • Problems masking and cropping

    every time i mask something or crop something i have a thin white line that outlines my mask or cropped area. i turn off show outline, show points, show handles, etc but i still have what appears to be a white outline. it sometimes goes away when i feather the mask, or cropped area but not always.
    anyone know what is going on, or how i can get rid of this white line??

    The outline is in the canvas and when i export it to quicktime it is thicker and more obvious.
    most of my source footage is mp4, i am working on converting it all to AIC.
    Most of my material is from DVDs, i used 4 Media converter
    DV NTSC 48 kHz are the settings
    i couldn't find a screen shots to use, because i haven't masked anything recently due to this issue, and all my older projects are missing footage cause i am converting everything and moving things around.

  • Mouse clicks and path not exporting to flash

    Hey Guys, I've just started using Captivate v5 and all seems to work fine but when I export to Flash CS5, the mouse animates as linear and the click effect doesn't appear. If I preview from captivate the paths and clicks are there. If I click the mouse icon on the slides, they are all set to flash blue circle and straight pointer path is unchecked. The slides do not contain live film either, just screenshots. If I go into the movie in flash, the tween is there but no motion path. Any ideas?  Thanks

    Yeah, when I export to flash it opens the doc as AS3. Also, I noticed the default click effect does work, but when I change to any of the custom ones it gets ignored by flash.

  • Changing background and alignment when exporting to Flash

    How can I get my slides to appear LEFT aligned with a WHITE background in a browser when I export from Keynote to Flash?

    To get the white background, you'll need to have a white background on the Keynote file. To have a white background and the left align on the web page, you'll need to set the HTML tags correctly. This can be done with Dreamweaver or any other HTML editor. (Not sure you'd be able to do it in iWeb, that program is one that I haven't begun to try to understand)
    If you want to try editing the HTML file that is created with the flash file, you can download Taco HTML edit and on the body line add bgcolor="#FFFFFF" then on the div line add align="left"

  • Lines and title flashing across the program monitor and in final export

    I'm seeing very thin lines flashing across the program monitor when playing a complex sequence with 7 video tracks. They draw at various angles and span the entire screen. There can be one or more showing at any time. They are colored and each line appears to be only one color, but different lines can be different colors. Some lines are solid, others are dashed. There is also a ghosty-white representation of one of my titles flashing around the screen for only a frame or two, then it flashes somewhere else.
    Sequences and Tracks:
    Base Sequence: AVCHD with disolves and color correction
    Next Sequence Layer: Base Sequence placed on tracks 1 and 2. Motion is applied to both tracks. LInearWipe and Opacity are applied to Track 2.
    (This creates an image in the center of the screen with a reflection.)
    Next Sequence Layer (1st track of the final 7): Animates Basic3D and Motion (position, scaling)
    2nd, 3rd and 4th of the seven are just like the1st. So there are 4 video screens flying around with reflections and perspective. Kind of like the iTunes album art widget - screen flies in, goes center stage, then flies back.
    Layers 5 to 7 are titles. They are also nested sequences having reflections and Basic3D, but their positions are not animated.
    My system:
    Phenom II x6 1055T
    8 Gb DDR3 1333
    3 Drives 7200 rpm (one program, one preview/conforming, one video)
    nVidia GeForce GTX 260 (3 fans attached)
    3 Case fans plus the side is open - running very cool
    MSI 890GXM-G65 Mobo
    My Project:
    Originated as a CS4 project, opened with CS5 and converted (did not import). Fixed all the title screwups, missing fonts, graphics, hooked up the off-line media etc etc. There are a couple of 1.5 hour nested AVCHD multi-camera sequences which look and play great. Then there are 2 of these monster sequences which are actually used as DVD menus and are about 44 seconds each. When I render these 7 layer menu sequences and play them back, these lines start flashing across the screen.
    Of course the GTX 260 has the GPU unlocked and that works great for the 1.5 hour programs. But if I attempt to render the 44 second monsters Premier stops responding and I have to EndTask it (all CPUs drop to idle while not responding). These monster sequences might test the power of the Quadro CX. So when I work with the menu sequences, I set Premiere to use software GPU and not MPE. Then I can render (2 hours render time to preview 44 seconds with six cores at near 100%). So it does render, slowly.
    I'm exporting an mpeg2 file now and will let you know if the lines show up in the final rendering. I can see the lines showing up on the MediaEncoder's small preview screen as it renders. Doesn't give me comfort.
    OK worst case scenario. The lines ARE in the final mpeg2 file. Makes the file unusable garbage...
    Is anyone else seeing flashing lines and titles?
    Here's a link to a still from the export to illustrate the artifacts.(face and name were blanked out by me)

    Thanks

    The crop workaround was successful for removing the lines - worked great. There was the issue of the ghost text which you can see in the screenshot link provided above. This was not removed by crop. Crop removed the lines, but not the ghost. Thankfully, the 4 point garbage mask did work on the ghost and I was able to eliminate it. I had to apply the garbage mask on the sequence where Basic3D was applied not its parent sequence where VerticalFlip was used. The most important thing is that I've successfully migrated this CS4 project to CS5 and can now take advantage of 64bit processing (more RAM) to tame the beast. I'm using this sequence as a menu for a series of DVDs so my time expended will pay me back again and again.
    The asset generating the ghost was built like this...
    In the titler: Text was placed over a logo (.tiff file for logo and it was scaled and moved)
    Base Sequence: Title was brought to two, stacked tracks. VerticalFlip, and LinearWipe were applied to one which was then moved to look like a reflection of the other
    Next Sequence: Layed the Base Sequence down. Applied Basic 3D and moved it's XY position. (This is where I applied the GarbageMask to remove the ghost)
    I tried separating the logo from the text thinking that the logo feature of the titler might be the problem. So I used a separate video track and pulled in the .tiff file directly. It didn't eliminate the ghost. Applying the GarbageMask to the base sequence also didn't help. It was only after Basic3D was applied that the ghost would appear. And since I have Basic3D applied to other reflected text-only layers which do not exhibit the ghost artifact, the bug has something to do with the text/graphic combination with VerticalFlip and Basic3D.
    To top it all off, I can no longer recreate the problem. I've turned off the garbage mask and it's not showing up. While I was testing, the ghost was easy to recreate, but now I can't do it. So I don't appear to be able to drill down deeper. Perhaps it will come back at some point and I can test it further and update this thread.

  • How To Perform The Same Edit And Crop To Multiple Images?

    On just one image this would be a no brainer, I'd just use the paint brush or similar tool to wipe over a section I want covered and use the crop tool to get the image size and position I'm after. The thing is though, I'd like to do the same edit and crop to a series of photos to keep them all consistent and it's beyond me how to do that in PS5. When I look at help I find tips on using scripts, batch processing or stacking images that seem to defy the English language and don't address the two simple little things I want to do to these images.
    Can anyone explain, or point me to a resource, that could help me accomplish what I'd like to think should be a simple task for such an expensive program?
    Greg

    You could use a "clipper" document to isolate the globe in each image.
    Create a clipper doc which is the size of the images in the globe series and which contains only a layer with a silhouette of the globe surrounded by transparency.
    Make an Action which will copy the current image and close it, paste into the already open clipper doc, clip that image layer to the silhouette layer, crop/trim, export a file then revert the clipper doc to its initial state of just the silhouette ready for processing the next image in the batch. For example:
    1. Select All
    2. Copy
    3. Close
    4. Paste
    5. Create Clipping Mask
    6. Trim based on transparent pixels
    7. Save As
    8. Revert
    Open the clipper doc then set up Batch so the output files are named with a serial number.

  • PSE 5--what is a clipping mask and how does it work?

    Can anyone explain what a clipping mask is, how it works, and most importantly if Photoshop Elements 5.0 has this capability?
    Also, are there any tutorials out there that I can teach myself on this topic? I am trying to mimic a layout explained in digital scrapbooking magazine and this technique is used.
    Thank you!
    Heather

    Heather,
    You can find one explanation at Janee's tutorials: http://www.myjanee.com/tuts/elements/elemask.htm
    Since PSE does not support layer masks per se, the clipping group simulates a layer mask and hence Janee's name for it, "elemask" (cute, huh?)
    Here are 2 examples:
    In this example I wanted to blur the background leaving the flower in focus:
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1euavV1sDqzrEqqqierfc5dSEH9yI01
    1. Duplicate the Background layer and apply a Gaussian blur to the new layer.
    2. Add an adjustment layer below the blur layer (any kind of adjustment layer will do), but do not make any adjustment - just click OK.\
    3. Group the blur layer with the adjustment layer. On the adjustment layer paint the subject with black
    to mask out the blur, paint with white to restore the blur.
    Of course you can use other tools on the adjustment layer besides the paint brush, e.g., make a selection and fill with the black or white. In some cases it might be easier to first fill the adjustment layer with black and then paint with white.
    In this example (not actually a mask but still demonstrates a clipping group) I wanted to crop the picture into a leaf shape.
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1ys9Z7FspSwF8HHKGLrxjGVhbTodmF0
    1. Use the leaf from the Custom Shape tool to draw out the leaf, creating a new layer.
    2. Move the leaf layer below the picture layer.
    3. Group the two layers.
    Note that in order to move a layer below the Background layer you have to rename the Background layer to anything else (layer 0 in my example).

  • Cannot Apply Layer Mask in Photoshop CS6

    First off, let me state that I am a *total* Ps newbie…My question regards the following: In Ps CS6, I cropped an area using the Marquee Tool. Then, I Added [a] Layer Mask from the Layers Panel. Next, I turned off the Indicates layer mask is linked to layer BUTTON, clicked the Smart Object Thumbnail, and moved the image using the Move Tool. Now, I right-clicked on the Layer Mask Thumbnail in order to Apply Layer Mask but it is de-highlighted. This is my problem. I cannot figure out how to Apply [the] Layer Mask. (I hope this all made sense.) Can someone please tell me how to do this in CS6? TY.

    Thank you for the quick reply. I started the whole process over again and went through the same steps; and, I don't know if it shows up in the screen capture, but there is, indeed, a frame around the Layer Mask Icon when I right-click on it. The above pull-down menu is what I get when I right-click on it. (BTW, this is for a CS5 online course I'm taking, and this particular Lesson is called "Generating a Non-Destructive Crop." I'm having to figure some stuff out, since I have CS6...) I hope all that info helps.

  • Why does CS6 InDesign Book epub output generate and apply new graf and character style names in CSS?

    I created an InDesign book composed of documents that had had no paragraph or character styles in the palettes until text was copied over from a single overall document. I worked absolutely as clean as I could.
    I synchronized the book to that single overall document several times, including immediately before exporting the book to epub. My export settings disallowed any local formatting. Character styles were restricted to one named "Italic" for which the only format applied was Italic in the Font Style field, and one named "Small Caps" for which NO formatting was included in the character style.
    There was, as far as I can see, no reason for any character or paragraph styles to export to anything but identically-named CSS entries. That is to say, any text with the character style "Italic" applied in the InDesign doc should have output with the same text with a span class entry of "Italic" around it.
    I still ended up with p and span CSS entries with extra numbers appended to them:
    span.Italic {
    font-style:italic;
    font-weight:normal;}
    span.Small-Caps-1 {
    font-variant:normal;}
    span.Italic-1 {
    font-style:italic;
    font-weight:normal;}
    span.Small-Caps-2 {
    font-variant:normal;}
    span.Italic-2 {font-style:italic;
    font-weight:normal;}
    span.Small-Caps-3 {
    font-variant:normal;}
    span.Italic-3 {
    font-style:italic;
    font-weight:normal;}
    and
    p.x-SECTION-BREAK, p.x-SECTION-BREAK-1, p.x-SECTION-BREAK-2, p.x-SECTION-BREAK-3  and so on.
    Why would the InDesign epub output engine choose to generate and apply new spans and paragraph-level styles, which multiply the complexity of editing the CSS directly? How can I prevent InDesign from doing this?

    Perhaps I wasn't clear. When I wrote "an InDesign book composed of documents that had had no paragraph or character styles in the palettes until text was copied over from a single overall document" I meant to emphasize  the part where I CLEARLY said "UNTIL text was copied over." The text I copied over had plenty of paragraph styles. I was trying to point out that each individual document had no PREVIOUSLY EXISTING character or paragraph styles that might have added complexity to the epub output. .
    So, every paragraph in each document had a paragraph style attached, a total of maybe 20 different paragraph styles throughout the book. The only CHARACTER LEVEL styles I cared about exporting were Italic, for text that was set in italic, and Small Caps, for CAPITALIZED text that I wanted to be able to make smaller in the CSS, since I am not allowed to embed fonts and therefore have no other way of creating small caps in the xhtml files inside the epub.
    So, given that I had two character styles applied to various bits of text throughout my InDesign book ("Italic" and "Small Caps"), I would like to know why there are multiple CSS entries generated: Italic, Italic-1, Italic-2, Small Caps, Small Caps-1, Small Caps-2, and so on.
    Ditto paragraph styles. I had a paragraph style called "SECTION BREAK" in each document. Not only did paragraph style "SECTION BREAK" contain identical specs in each document--I know they did because I copied each from one single doc where they were being used identically--but I also synchronized the book repeatedly.  So why would the xhtml docs and the CSS output need p.x-SECTION-BREAK-1, p.x-SECTION-BREAK-2, and p.x-SECTION-BREAK-3?

  • Scale and Crop - left with black bars

    In Final Cut Express, I know the concept of "scale and crop" but when I am scaling and cropping, I am still left with black bars on each side of the video. It seems that I am able to crop/scale the white background and the video but not the canvas. Here is a screenshot of what I am working with...
    http://www.brokersalliance.com/paperwork/crop.gif
    Even after I export the video, I am still left with "unused space."
    I want the white background to fill the total space yet when I resize the video/white background, I am left with black excess.

    You have a black background BECAUSE you cropped the clip. When you scale down or crop a clip and nothing is underneath it, all you'll see is black.
    If you want a white background, place a color matte on a video track below the clip and set its color to white.

  • Masking and clip art with transparent backgrounds

    I'm new to iWeb and am creating a travel blog. So far love the simplicity of it. However, when I try to add clip art type images or graphics with transparent backgrounds I always get a white border around them. I have tried to mask or crop the border out but no dice. Any help?!
    Also, if anyone can recommend a good source for travel or photo related clip art let me know. The iWeb "Roadtrip" template seems to have some cute items - maps, scissors, tape, etc. - but there is not much there.
    Thanks everyone.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. That's the default border for added image files. Go to the Inspector/Graphic pane and take off the frame/stroke that is added by default.
    Click to view full size
    Be sure to post a request to remove that default border at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iweb.html. The more complaints the better.

  • Scale and Crop in slideshow not working

    I put together 2 slideshows with music and used the pan and zoom feature. Unfortunately, when i select scale and crop for the images, its still showing black bars instead of filling the screen.  The images vary in size and rotatin but they are all high quality. I am working in cs6.
    Any advice or solution would be greatly appreciated.

    As a workaround, you might want to look into my workflow of using Still Images.
    Now, I must start by saying that I nearly always create my slideshow in PrPro, and do not normally use the SlideShow feature in En.
    I gather my Images into folders, that differentiate their size, and their orientation, and will often place those, that will require Panning on a Zoomed OUT Image, into yet another.
    In Photoshop, I have Actions to Scale to the necessary dimensions, and also apply Rotation, if required. For those Images that WILL have the Pans, I calculate how large they need to be, and adust one of the Actions for that purpose.
    Then, I use Automate>Batch, choosing the appropriate Action, and set my Source Folder and Destination Folder, as needed. Those Ps Actions work on the every Image in the Source Folder, and output (Save_As) to my Destination Folder, as PSD.
    Those Scaled files are then Imported, and any Pans, Zooms, etc., are applied to them.
    I have not used En's Scale function, but have read of a few problems with it. Also, remember that any sort of Scale to Frame, will only Scale up to the point, where the greatest dimension fills that dimension on the Frame, so if you have, say a portrait oriented Image (vertical), the Scale function will only Scale that up, until the vertical dimension fills the vertical dimension of your Frame, leaving black bars on either side (Pillarboxed). Same for a landscape oriented image (horizontal), whose Aspect Ratio is less than the Video Frame. That Image will be Scaled until the horizontal dimension fills the horizontal dimension of the Video Frame, and as the Aspect Ratio does not match up to the Aspect Ratio of the Video Frame, you will be left with black bars above and below (Letterboxed).
    As required, I also do any Cropping that would be required by differences in Aspect Ratio, so that my processed Images WILL match my Video Frame Size.
    Maybe others will have some tips on using the features in En, to perhaps save you from using the workaround.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
