Applying keywords to groups of images

I'm having difficulty applying Keywords to groups of images. When I select a group of images in the browser and drag a keyword from the HUD over them, the keyword is only applied to the image onto which it was directly dropped. I'm sure that in the past I've been able to apply a keword to any number of images at once using this technique. What's the obvious thing that I'm doing wrong here?
Andy.

"That's probably because you have the toggle primary only selected. It's the rectangle box on the far right of the first set of controls on the bottom of the screen.
Jeff "
Or in case you have those controls hidden you can also press 'S'

  • Help with Keywording a group of Images

I need help applying keywords to a group of selected images. For some reason I can't get this to work. I've done it before and now it won't work. Here is what I'm doing. I've selected a group of images in a project by using shift and clicking the first and last image I want and using comand to select images that are not next to each other. They all show up in the viewer and the thin white lines show up around the images in the browser. Now I go and add a keyword. It doesn't seem to matter if I use the Keyword control bar buttons or if I type in a key word in the bar in the lower right hand side, the same thing happens. The keyword is only being applied to the primary selection and not the whole group. Why isn't this working? I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but it's starting to drive me crazy. Any help with this would be great thanks.

You have switched 'toggle primary only' on. To turn it off click on the button with a square in it at the bottom of the screen or press 's'

  • Applying metadata to groups of images

i understand this has been answered by "toggle primary" off but this isnt working for me when applying keywords for some odd reason.
    any ideas?

It should, when you select a group of images, the primary will be the one showing in the viewer.
If primary only is off all the images should get the keywords, if it's on only the image shown in the browser with a yellow border (primary) will get the keyword.
Press 's' to switch 'primary only' on or off.

  • Applying  keywording to groups

I know about adding keywording while importing but not all keywords apply to the group. So when I try to select groups of thumbnails in Library and add keywords to them it will not apply to the group but only one photo in the group. What am I doing wrong?

The reasoning is to be consistent with Filmstrip in Develop where there is no Grid and only one image is worked on at a time (forgetting sync) so the most select of multi-selection gets the action. In Library it is the same. It is in the grid where multiselect thumbnails all get the action (in your case keywording).

  • Aperture not applying keywords to all selected images

OK, so I've been categorizing for a couple of days now, and everything's going fine. I'm going through around 200gb of files, applying keywords to each one.
Today, I opened Aperture and tried to start where I left off. I selected a bunch of files and dragged a keyword from the Keyword HUD to the selection, just as I've been doing all along. For some reason, today Aperture only applies the keyword to the image I'm on when I release the mouse, not the others in the selection.
Any clue what's going on here?

Ignore this post--I went through the archives and found a reference to "Primary Only," which turned out to be my problem.

  • Applying preset to group of images doesn't work

In the develop module of Lightroom 2.2, I do a Ctl-A to select all images, and then click on a preset button. The preset only gets applied to the active image, not all selected. This is an issue on one of my computers, but not on the other. Am I missing some setting or preference?
    Thank you.

Dang -- I had auto sync turned on one computer, and of course it worked. Auto sync was turned off on the one where it didn't work as I expected. Thanks tomrock for triggering me to look at that.

  • Applying Keywords to Groups

Hi, as an Aperture newbie, according to Page 85 of the Exploring Aperture booklet, I can shift click several images and drag keywords to one of the highlighted browser images and they should all be assigned the keywords. Yet when I do this only the image I drag it to is assigned and not the others. How can I assign the keywords to all of the highlighted images as the booklet describes?

you have primary only selected ... this feature lets you have multiple images selected but changes, such as keywords, only go to the primary image, thicker border ...
it is under the Edit menu, or the icon on the bottom right with a '1' in it ... or used to be keyboard 'S' ... i think i had to set that back up in my own command set for the keyboard ...

  • Question about adding keywords to a group of images in Aperture

    Hi all,
Not sure what I am doing incorrectly, but I am unable to add a keyword to more than 1 image at a time, even though a group of images is selected. So, for example, in Browser view, with 4 images selected, using the keyword HUD, I drag a keyword to one of the selected images, and only the one dragged to gets that keyword, not the others in the group.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Aperture 3.1.1

    Hi Pi,
Not quite sure what the purpose of that button is.
You'll laugh about this sometime not too long from now. Sometime, you will have a bunch of photos selected and *not want to change your selection*, but you'll notice that you need to add some metadata or adjust just 1 of those pictures. That's when you use the "primary only". When you find yourself in that situation, it'll be like a "eureka" since you're currently wondering what it's all about.

  • Applying keyword to multiple images

I'm going through many thousands of images applying keywords. The keywords are applied with Option 1, 2, etc.
I am finding that if I have more thn ne image selected, hitting option 1 applies the keyword to the first image only. Is this expected bahavior? Is there a way for me to apply the same keyword to many images in a selection all at once?
    Michael

Make sure you don't have Primary Only set.
It's the middle icon ar the bottom of the browser window.

  • Problem applying keywords to a selection of images

I've tried applying keywords to multiple images as described in the aperture manual but it doesn't work for me. When I drag keywords from the keyword HUD to a selection of images only the first image will contain the keyword when I check it. I get the same result when typing in the keyword menu at the bottom right of the screen.
I don't want to use the batch change dialogue because this erases all other keyword content before applying the new keywords. This is really annoying, any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

No, I've just done the same thing a few times and took me a bit to figure out. Being able to toggle this on and off is helpful if say you're adding a bunch of keywords to a selected, and one or two need tags specific to them, then you toggle this on, drop the keywords they need, then toggle off and finish tagging them all with other keywords.

  • Image Rating - de-rate a group of images

    Hi -
I import my images and then set up 3 smart folders - I use the folders to make my image selects 1*, 2* and 3*
My question is: when viewing images in the browser - say all my smart album 2* images - how can I de-rate (eg from 2-1*) ALL the images. When I select all images - all images are selected - but 1 image only has a brighter WHITE selection boarder - and when I de-rate my images to 1* - only 1 image is derated!
Any advice on how to derate a group of images.
    Thanks
    Tony.

    Tony,
you probably have the "primary Only" option active, see my User Tip here:
Keywords or ratings are applied only to one of the selected images - why?

  • Rotating a group of images

I seem to be having an issue rotating multiple images at the same time - I select a group and when I choose rotate only the main selection (with the heavy line) rotates. Any ideas?

Dave sounds like you have toggled the primary button, bottom RHS of the viewer a square with a "1" in it. Turning this feature on allow you to have a group of images selected but only make changes to the primary image, eg. I have six images selected and want to sort through them, in "normal" mode any rating, metadata changes applied go across the selection, the primary function allow you to move through a group and work on them individually.
search on "primary" in the manual.

  • Applying Keywords in Aperture - why can't I do it?

I'm trying to apply keywords to images by dragging and dropping both from the keyword HUD and the keyword panel, but nothing is happening. Nothing appears either on the image or in metadata. Am I missing something really simple (happens a lot to us seniors), or is there another explanation? I would really appreciate some help on this as I've already spent a long time with Apple & Microsoft to no avail. I thought that upgrading from 3.0 to 3.1 might help, but no luck there either. I hope someone out there can help to stop me climbing the walls!!!

I'll try be of more help to you than Microsoft
Are you trying to apply keywords to multiple photos at once? If so it could be that you're in Primary Only mode and the keywords are only being applied to one picture at a time, giving you the impression they're not being applied at all (if you're not checking the selected pic). The control to toggle Primary on/off is the S key - which can easily be hit by mistake.
    If not, try the following:
    • Select a picture.
    • Go to the Metadata pane and from the popup menu select General. You should see a Keywords field.
    • Drag a keyword from the HUD. Has it been added?
    • If not, type a keyword in the Keywords field.
    • With the same picture selected go to Menubar>Metadata>Lift Metadata. When the Lift & Stamp HUD appears deselect everything except Keywords.
    • Select a few pictures and click Stamp Selected Images in the HUD. Have the keywords been added to the selected pics?
Let us know how this goes…

  • "Error Applying Keyword Tag(s)" in PSE 12

When I drag an album name onto an image (or vice versa) in Organizer 12 to add the image to the album I get an error dialog with the message "Error Applying Keyword Tag(s)" and the image is not added to the album. How can I fix this? Thanks.

    HI,
I don't think the rename was necessary as I didn't do that - I think it was the creation of a new album that did the trick. It must be a sort of permissions problem.
Glad it is now working for you.
Your can have the beer for me, I'm in the UK and well into my retirement so I probably won't be over there in the near future.

  • Giving a group of images a concave appearance

I have grouped a number of images of magazines and would like to give the whole collage the effect of being concave - as if they are all placed along and semi circular wall. I am unable to use the filter- distort function. Is there another way to achieve this effect for a group of images?
    Thank you

Maybe converting them all to one Smart Object and applying a Free Transform/Warp would meet your needs.
