Arch Vs HP Mini 100-4100

Hi All,
i'm a new user on Arch, i come from other distro's (debian/ubuntu - fedora)
i spend the day following a lot of wiki's and guides in order to install Arch on my netbook.
The problem is: X doesn't start.
surely i made a lot mistake on the installation of X and DE
Now, my goal is:
install Arch with a light DE (i tried Fedora 17, starts with gnome but works with a lot of CPU usage)
i will use this netbook for surfin' the web, email, video (stream & local), light gaming, and properly use the keyboard hotkeys
what are the steps to follow in order to make this happen?
On this netbook is present a GMA500 Intel chipset
Thanx in advance for the suggestions & please forgive me if I posted in the wrong section

Welcome to Arch.
I have an HP mini 110 as well though mine is a year or two older.  My best advice is to just follow the excellent beginners guide--if you haven't already-- https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide to get a base system and then add the de/wm you decide on--or install a few to try them out.  You'll likely need to install the xf86-video-intel and intel-dri packages for your video to work and follow the Xorg wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg
I have a section in my /etc/xorg.conf or you can but it in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf to set the acceleration necessary for the intel video
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
#Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
EndSection
I got the best performance from the uxa option but your mileage may vary edit: I apparently have a gma3150 not the GMA500 chipset--thank goodness, after doing some googling.
My hp mini has a Realtek wireless card that uses the rtl8192ce module but yours could be something different.
$ lspci
will give you the info but I didn't have to do anything.  The modules necessary loaded and the firmware was already in the installed system.. If yours is a broadcom card you'll likely need to install the firmware--see the wiki, or it could be whatever hp decidied to use this year.  Who knows?
The only hotkeys that worked out of the box for me are the brightness keys but I had to use xbindkeys for others to work as I use a simple tiling wm.  Other DE's like gnome, xfce that I have used with other linux distros seem to have the keys working out of the box but I keep a very simple setup on my netbook.  It's all up to you.
edit:  I type too slow--two people ahead of me. ... and coincidentally the guy right ahead of me, Trilby, programmed the tiler I use.

  • Anyone with Arch on Dell Mini 9 (Inspiron 910) ?

    As subj ask
    thanks !

    Thanks buttons. Arch installation on Dell Inspiron Mini 9 completed. Here it goes
    fs : ext4 worked fine but when Ieft on battery over night  for Syu caused most of the config and executables to disappear. reinstalled with ext3 with 4
           partitions. (root/boot/usr/home). ext3 with noatime,commit=15 option. Added 512 MB swap latter (swap in file). /var/log and /tmp in tmpfs
    sound: alsa fails at times without any reason and leaving no sign even with option in modeprobe.conf.  oss works fine.
                           for the alsa to work the google search provided the following solutions.
                           blacklist snd-pcsp. put the options mentioned in this thread and alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel in modprobe.conf
    WM/DE : metacity / GNOME with slim login manager.
                 : Problem faced: without any DE/WM mounting swap / var / tmp directories on 16 GB SDHC card works. but with DE/GNOME GNOME fails on
                   gconf-sanity-check-2 exited (status 256) error message. (all xml files in .gconf are tho' with right permissions). gdm issues error something
                   related to missing /var/log/gdm directory and hence switched to slim. (/var/log in temfs)
    Power saving: suspend works. even with 512 MB swap files hibernation is not working as expected.
    Networking : conventional method (network daemon) works fine for Ethernet (r8169 driver). wireless network connection yet to be tested. (wireless connection tested and working fine)
                            side note: netcfg miserably fails. network connection dropped without leaving any message.
                                 correction: The problem is not with netcfg as eth0 and eth1 are getting swaped. The
                                                  solution is to put the modules in rc.conf or creating udv rule.
    Total Installation size: aprox: 3.3 GB
    Others: bluetooth is yet to tested. web cam works as mentioned in this thread.
                              bluetooth is working fine.kernel pulls the modules but not enabled.
                              To enable use this aircraftmanger
                               Side note: for the aircraft manger to work portio needs to be installed and is in aur.
           Hope this will help the Dell mini 9 users with Arch installation.

  • Arch Linux on Mini-ITX

    Hey There,
    Because that I've got serious problems with my HP laptop (not related with Arch Linux) and I have to get my laptop laid at the tech. service the 4th time, I'm planning to have my mini-itx system based on Arch Linux.. I've always tought about VIA Epia mainboards but my friends keep saying that:
    - the graphics card is not that powerful so that i can't watch some quality movies like HD..?
    - that the architecture is i586 based so that i'd have to compile every package that i need
    - because that via's drivers are not open source, i could have many problems
    and etc..... they suggest buying an intel mini-itx mainboard as well.. So I want to ask you guys if these rumors are true or not... What would you recommend ? By the way:
    - i'm not a gamer... i just play maybe openarena as a 3d game..
    - instead of a harddisk, i think of using something like a sd/cf card with a few gb's of storage
    - i'd like to connect the machine to a projector and a monitor.. so having 2 output connectors would be better..
    - i think of building a multimedia box with it so having some modules (ports) for irda etc would be good..
    thanks..

    If I were you I'd just go for a small mATX, probably one of those cube cases. The epia boards will be useless for basically any 3d games and the CPU isn't powerful enough to decode HD movies like 1080p. If your must I definitely say get a board that supports a core2 intel cpu, but really a mATX is just an all around better buy. You get better hardware for the money, it is still really small, power consumption shouldn't too high albeit a bit higher then an mini-itx, it will be as powerful as a full tower desktop PC and give you a better upgrade path. Oh you can also make it really quiet depending on the case.
    I am not sure if the VIA CPUs are 586 or 686 though.

  • HP Mini 100-1010CA Canada -- access blue keys on keyboard??

    New HP Mini purchased in Canada. Ordinary keyboard config except it has several special characters denoted in blue. Nowhere in manuals does it explain how to access these. Suspect language/keyboard settings may not be correct. Any suggestions? thx.

    Thanks for the Ctrl-Shift-Shift. That combination switches between keyboard settings that are active for the netbook. On the Canadian Multilingual Standard some of those blue keys work, but some of them don't. So I'm still thinking my keyboard settings are not correct. Is someone able to confirm what keyboard settings you have where this is working for you?
    You can access this information via Control Panel -- Regional and Language Options -- Languages tab -- Details button. From there you will see a list including the default language when the computer starts up, as well as any additional languages set up.
    many thanks.

  • Problem with faux column and min 100% height

    hello
    i',m trying to create a faux column on this page:
    http://www.malcmabe.co.uk/listtest.html.
    the column i'm trying to do is the left hand side menu

    i just can't get this to work, so i'm obviousley missing

    also, i've set the wrapper as minimum height of 100%. this
    isn't working, so my hunch is that it's having a knock on effect to
    the measurements of the left hand column....but i may be wrong

    That's not quite how faux columns work - you'd make an image
    the width
    of your container with the dimensions you need - perhaps a
    line only to
    separate a left and right column or something a little more
    detailesd -
    the image's height can be sliced very small as it will repeat
    on the y
    axis, attached via css to the container. You can then use
    margins or
    divs floated left and right to keep your content on either
    side.
    Something like this I made earlier......

    and the background image......

    Hey,
    if i'm not mistaken you press the left alt key , right next to the cmd key.
    I don't know how to get into the bios and i do not believe you can select an os to boot by default other than windows and mac os x, after you install grub it should be defaulted by efibootmgr but if you tell mac os x you'd rather boot from it you'll have to re bless grub :
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ma … g_blessing
    if all this crap is too much for you, you can always go for refind which is really easy to install and remove. just google refind and install it in mac os x, uninstalling it is as easy as deleting it from the /EFI folder on the mac os x partition if i'm not mistaken.

    Nevermind.  I found a solution.  Changing the grub mode line to:

    A friend has given me her machine... apparently shortly after warranty period closed she slammed the cover closed (pissed off with her kids) and it hasn't worked since then...
    I assumed a crashed hard drive but now I understand it is a SSD Solid State which means no moving parts...
    Why won't it start up?
    The screen comes on etc... it is otherwise "working"...
    From the options I have - System Recovery won't work...
    HP BIOS application is corrupt or missing

    I am determined to make this work!

    i disconnected the hard drive and reconnected it...

  • Still need to break movies into 20 min / 100 cuts before sending to Color?

    Wondering if anyone knows if Apple have addressed the issue of having to break long timelines into sections of 20 minutes or so before sending to Color.
    Thanks

    IME, it's not the length of the sequence but the number of cuts in the sequence.
    If after importing my sequence into Color I look under the Shots tab and it shows more than 800 shots - I'll start breaking up the show.

  • Arch and Win7 cannot open an NTFS partition created by the other

    This is almost certainly related to another post where I was struggling to create logical partitions from Windows. Basically, Linux and Minitool Partition Wizard agreed that there were no logical partitions, but the built-in Windows disk utility said there was. I ended up using fdisk from Arch install media, and Minitool and Arch now both saw the logical partitions (Windows shows a big extended partition of free space). I installed Arch just fine, can boot to it and win7... life is good.
    Not so much. A key to my setup is having an encrypted partition to share data between OS's. I used TrueCrypt with great success on my former laptop and am now having great difficulty!
    Some preliminary information:
    # fdisk -l /dev/sda
    Disk /dev/sda: 238.5 GiB, 256060514304 bytes, 500118192 sectors
    Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    Disklabel type: dos
    Disk identifier: 0x1e6513b3
    Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
    /dev/sda1 * 2048 2101247 2099200 1G 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
    /dev/sda2 2101248 172433407 170332160 81.2G 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
    /dev/sda3 172433408 390537215 218103808 104G 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
    /dev/sda4 390537216 500118191 109580976 52.3G 5 Extended
    /dev/sda5 390539264 391587839 1048576 512M 83 Linux
    /dev/sda6 391589888 500118191 108528304 51.8G 83 Linux
    I also went partition by partition to check Minitool's agreement on sectors (they match perfectly with the exception that it doesn't show the extended /dev/sda4 container). I triple checked the Minitool partition info properties as you can't copy and paste from it's window, and pasted the fdisk output to minimize errors. I'm showing a column for mini/Arch for both start/stop sectors, and just subtracted them to make sure I got 0. Appears to be perfect alignment:
    | part | start (mini) | start (arch) | diff | | end (mini) | end (arch) | diff |
    |------+--------------+--------------+------+---+------------+------------+------|
    | sda1 | 2048 | 2048 | 0 | | 2101247 | 2101247 | 0 |
    | sda2 | 2101248 | 2101248 | 0 | | 172433407 | 172433407 | 0 |
    | sda3 | 172433408 | 172433408 | 0 | | 390537215 | 390537215 | 0 |
    | sda4 | 390539264 | 390539264 | 0 | | 391587839 | 391587839 | 0 |
    | sda5 | 391589888 | 391589888 | 0 | | 500118191 | 500118191 | 0 |
    - Screenshot of how Minitool sees my disk
    - Screenshot of how Windows disk utility sees my disk
    I used TrueCrypt 7.1a on both OS's. I created a non-system encrypted partition using the GUI on Arch with the AES cipher/sha-512 hash, with filesystem as "none." Once created I did:
    $ sudo cryptesetup --type tcrypt open /dev/sda3 vault
    That worked fine, which I followed with:
    $ sudo mkfs.ntfs /dev/mapper/vault
    It initialized the device with zero's and then gave me the success/have a nice day message. Closed the volume and rebooted. When I tried to open the device from win7, I got "Incorrect password or not a TrueCrypt volume." Hmmm. I guess I'll try in reverse. I duplicated the procedure exactly as above from win7, this time having TrueCrypt automatically format with NTFS. All succeeds and I can open the device. Reboot into Arch and I get the same message from TrueCrypt! If I try with cryptsetup, it's "No device header detected with this passphrase."
    Next, I tried just doing NTFS with no encryption. From Arch:
    $ sudo mkfs.ntfs /dev/sda3
    All goes well and I can mount it. I boot into Windows and it's not even listed! I used Minitool to issue it a drive letter, at which point clicking that pops up a windows dialog box asking me if I want to format the disk. Format the partition with NTFS in Windows, reboot into Arch and I get:
    [jwhendy@arch_zbook ~]$ sudo mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/scratch/
    NTFS signature is missing.
    Failed to mount '/dev/sda3': Invalid argument
    The device '/dev/sda3' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS.
    Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a
    partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around?
    Doesn't matter if I add "-t ntfs" or "-t ntfs-3g." I get the same result.
    Just to add a couple more oddities... when I created the NTFS partition in Arch, I also created a file called vault.tc as a TrueCrypt file-based encrypted container. My thinking was that the issue was with TrueCrypt full-partitions and that I could get around it with a plain partition containing an encrypted file. Reboot into windows and the partition isn't shown (as stated above). From Minitool, if I right click the partition and choose "Explore," it lists the partition contents and there is my vault.tc file. Windows thinks it's unformatted!
    I noticed the option to backup/restore a TrueCrypt header, and gave a shot at backing up the working TrueCrypt setup on windows to a flash drive, booting to Arch, and then restoring the /dev/sda3 header from the flash drive file. Arch still couldn't open it.
    Lastly, I noticed when I go to select a device to encrypt in TrueCrypt, my logical partitions aren't showing up (just like Windows only sees the end of the disk as free space). I just can't help but think something is tweaked in the partition table... basically:
    - TrueCrypt sees what Windows sees
    - Arch sees what Minitool sees
    How could I go about diagnosing further or fixing the issue. This is driving me crazy!
    I'd hate to do this given that I already setup my wm, configs, packages, etc... but my last resort attempt would be to wipe my logical partitions and see if I can at least get the win7 disk utility, minitool, arch, and truecrypt to like each other with respect to /dev/sda1-3... and then try to re-add the logicals afterward and re-install arch? I honestly don't know why this would be any different, but was just a thought. The issues from the other post seem to arise with logical partitions not being recognized the same between win/linux.
    Or figure out how to just use primaries (like dedicated boot on a USB drive or something). Or fiddle with growing/shrinking windows to see if I can undo whatever is telling windows where/what things are? Really grasping at straws here.

    I need to develop a graph in WAD, in BW7. In the graph the value must be showed as HR:MIN:SEC, which I cannot get it right.
    The keyfigure value  carries the duration(hr:min:sec) in decimal format.  In the query, I use this keyfigure for calculation. To get the time broadcasted for a week range. I get the total duration (say 507835.000). Now I need to convert this value back to hr:min:sec. I use the below formulas to get the hr, min, sec.
    D = 507835
    Val1 = D/3600
    Val2 = Frac(val1)
    Val3 = Val2 * 60
    Val4 = frac(Val3) * 60
    Hr = Val1 – Val2
    Min =  Val3 – frac(Val3)
    Sec =  Val4
    In another formula in the query I add Hr + Min/100 + Sec/10000 to get hr.minsec format.
    When I do an average on count of weeks,  this doesn’t round off correctly.
    I tried to also use the Data function TIME() which when the time is > 24 hrs changes the value.
    Lets say if it is 39:00:00, it shows value as 15:00:00 instead of keeping the value 39:00:00.
    When I used this value in the graph it did not show the HR:MIN:SEC values in the value axis instead  it showed 0.0, 0.1,….1.0. Bcoz of this the graph is blank.
    Can anybody help me to resolve this problem.
    Thanks alot
    Anima

    I checked SU01 and didn't see anything there to customize...
    In my workstation, control panel / regional and languages settings / tab regional Options / customize; my time format is HH:mm:ss; the HH has to be in capital letter to display the time in 24 hour...
    but this is strange anyway... are you reporting with web frontend or excel?

  • Family Plan Talk/Text 700 min + unl text $30 - change to Family Loyalty 550? Emply. Disc.

    Hey guys -
    I'm currently on the Talk and Text Nationwide plan with 2 lines and 700 minutes + $30 for Unlimited textings. I also have unlimited data on both lines.
    I was going to get $10 for 1,000 text on one line.
    I have a 22% employee discount thru work.
    BUT
    I'm thinking of switching to the 550 family loyalty plan. Apparently, this way I can get unlimited texting on one line for $20.
    I was wondering how this will change pricing wise? Would it be worth it or change too much?

    There's no discount on text plans correct? it would have to be talk & text?
    Actually, this is what I've worked out, is this correct:
    Just talk
    550 min loyal          $60 (22% OFF = 47)
    +20 U/L txt          $67                    -- no discount txt
    Talk & Txt (unl txt):
    700 min                    $100 (22% off = $80)
    +u/l                              $80
    Just talk:
    700 min                    $70 (22% off = 54)
    +10 1,000 txt          $80                    $64 - no discount
    +20 unl txt          $90                    $74 - no discount
    Talk 1400 + 10 f&f
    1400 min f&f    $90                    $70 w/discount
    +10 1,000 txt                              $80
    $20 u/l txt                              $90

  • What is a reseller and can I upgrade my mini to 20gb photo?

    I have a 4gb silver mini and it works just fine but I was really ticked off when I found out that you can get a 20gb photo for only $100 more. I bought it at Target and that is an authorized reseller, but I don't know what that is. All I want to do is pay $100 and trade in my mini + $100 for a 20gb photo. IS THERE ANY WAY TO DO THAT?

    I'm sure Target would be happy to exchange your mini for the new Ipod color, within 90 days I believe. Otherwise I don' know of too many options besides personally re selling.
