Are all security updates automatic or can I set preferences?

I was out for a couple of hours. When I came back to my Macbook I had a notification that a security update had been installed.
1) Is there any record anywhere of what update was installed?
2) Do I have any choice or can I set preferences about when and if downloads/updates happen and are installed?
I know there is a list here: Apple security updates - Apple Support
but I want to know if there is place on my machine where i can see the updates and compare  . . just to see if, for example the December 22 update is installed.
I can also see other updates in the app store but I don't see any security updates and the updates that are listed there don't have any dates attached.
Thanks very much,
Michael

Thanks, I did have that setting checked for security updates but I guess it hasn't happened automatically, if ever. In fact, this article seems to be saying this was the first automatic one ever?
http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/12/23/us-apple-cybersecurity-idUSKBN0K108W20 141223
So, is there a place that I can see what security updates have been installed?
I can see all the app updates in the app store but not security "patches."
Thanks again,
Michael

• Office 2013: where the heck are the security updates hiding?

I built a deployment for Office 2013 yesterday.  The source files were downloaded from Microsoft, with SP1 integrated.  This is *not* a "Click to Run" deployment.  I used the Office Customization Tool to make a few changes (we're
not using OneDrive, so that piece isn't getting installed.  I disabled the "First Run" and Customer Experience stuff, and disabled RSS Feeds and SharePoint integration.  And I put in our volume license key.  Overall it's a pretty vanilla
build.)
I wanted to include all available security updates since SP1 has been released, and stick them into the "Updates" folder of my deployment.  So after I installed Office 2013 x64 on my Windows 7 x64 system (the base package that I built installs
just fine), I went to Windows Update to see what was available.  There is nothing there.  I rebooted, and tried again.  Still nothing.  If I go into one of the Office 2013 apps, and go to File -> Account, I do *not* have any "Update"
buttons or options.
If I go to Windows Update in my Control Panel, and click "Change Settings", I have two things checked.  "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates", and "Allow all users to install updates on this
computer."  There are no other options to look for alternative Microsoft products, or at least no options that I can find.  This is Windows 7 x64 SP1, fully patched.
I know that there have been security updates released for Office 2013 since SP1 came out in February 2014.  I manually downloaded a security patch for Lync 2013, and installed that MSP onto this test system with no
issues.  So there are applicable security updates out there.  So why in the world can't I find the updates through the normal mechanisms?  Ideally, we'd want for end users to be able to install security updates manually in an
emergency, but either I'm missing something, or that is not possible in Office 2013.  Hopefully distributing Office 2013 updates through SCCM will work, but from what I'm seeing so far, I'm not sure the machines will be "detected" as having
Office 2013, because right now it can't even scan itself against Windows Update for that product.
Thanks for any input...I'm quite baffled at how the update routine is supposed to be functioning in Office 2013.  I think the missing link is why I can't choose to search for "other" Microsoft products from the Windows Update panel.
The option/checkbox is totally gone.

Hi,
By default Windows Update only updates Windows itself. To get updates for Office and for any other Microsoft products as well, you will need to upgrade your Windows Update to Microsoft Update.
On Windows Update panel, click "Find out more" link to install Microsoft Update.
Hope this helps.

• "Security Update 2013-004 can't be saved" WHY?

I'm trying to install updates on my MacBook Pro and I get an error message that says "Security Update 2013-004 can't be saved" and tells me to check my internet connection. Obviously my connection is fine since I'm writing this. I'm trying to update iTunes but it won't do that until this updates? I don't understand why it can't be saved.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
 ▹ Restart
from the menu bar.

word has stopped working on my macbook air, i have used it before and powerpoint etc are all still working, but i can no longer open word or word files can anyone help?

Hi Rachel,
Have you tried reinstalling Microsoft Word? Have you tried reinstalling Office? Have you run any updates recently for Microsoft Office? There was one that came out this week. You may wish to ask this question over at the Microsoft Word forums, there's a good chance you'll get a better answer as well. This forum is primarily designed for the MacBook Air hardware and interoperability with OS X on a MacBook Air.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can't play music from the computer if there is none there. If you are using iTunes Match you should now be able to download and play all your music on the Apple TV from the music feature on the main page.

Help, my computers are all stolen (4). How can I reinstall my CS5?

With all of your computers stolen you cannot reinstall anything.
What specifically is your problem?  Do you own the discs or do you need to download?  Do you need to get your serial number for CS5?  Do you need to have someone deactivate your software for the stolen machines?

• The time on my iphone is not being updated automatically, although it is set that way, why is the time 10 minutes slow

The time on my iphone is not being updated automatically, althought it is set that way. Why does it not update the time and why is it 10 minutes slow?

Thank you for your reply. I realy have nothing else to sync - no music. Emails do work so its just my contacts I am concerned about. I'm kinda new at this but have a working understanding of the system.
I have an icloud account but the Geek Squad went there and tried but could not export contacts.  I truly am not that good re icloud. They worked exclusively with my itunes, re-downloading, etc - all of the stuff in their book.
I have not tried a complete restore because I am not sure I am that good with the equipment but could.  I did all of the stuff on the help page - sync reset, forced one-way sync etc but the phone just does not seem to recognize the sync. I have not gone to an Apple store to have them have a look - that may be my next step to hook up to another itunes computer. It seems simple to me - it was working fine until maybe 3 months ago - probably when there was an update. Its telling to me that the phone does not tell me there is a sync in process while itunes is saying there is - its just not biting between the 2.
I appreciate any hep - and I said, I not stupidi about these things but have kind of reached as far as I am comfortable with fear of doing something really wrong.

• Are there any updates so i can use my HP Photosmart C4780 All in One Printer wirelessly?

just wondering..are there any updates for the iMac with OS X (10.8.2) so I can use my HP Photosmart C4780 All in One (Print,Scan,Copy)?

Hi,
An HP Full Feature Software is not available for Mountain Lion, therefore the Wireless configuration is tricky and cannot be done through the software.
To connect the printer to your wireless network you will need to create a temporary wireless ad hoc connection, then the wireless connection to your router can be configured via the EWS page:
Step one: Restore the printer's network default settings
Touch the ATM button ( ) next to Wireless / Scan .
Touch the ATM button ( ) next to Wireless Menu .
Touch the ATM button ( ) next to Wireless Settings .
Use the up and down ATM buttons ( ) to select Restore Network Defaults , and then press OK .
Touch the ATM button ( ) next to  Yes to confirm your selection.
Step two: Networkly connect the Mac to the printer by creating a temporary ad-hoc connection
From the Mac, click the Wi-Fi icon.
Click Join other network.
Click Show Networks.
Select the printer's SSID, it should be listed as HPSETUP or should contain HP or C4700 within its name.
Click Connect
Allow two-three minutes to fully establish the network connection.
Step three: Connect the printer to your router via the EWS page
Open Safari.
Click the Bookmarks icon ()
Click Bonjour.
Double click the printer name, the EWS page appears.
Open the Networking tab.
From the left pane select Wireless.
Click the Start Wizard button and follow the steps to connect the printer to your router.
Step four: Reconnect the Mac to your router
From the Mac, click the Wi-Fi icon.
Click Join other network.
Click Show Networks.
Select your router SSID.
Click Connect
Allow two-three minutes to fully establish the network connection.
Now the printer should be connected to your network.
Open Print & Scan, click the Plus sign and add the printer listed as Bonjour.
btw John Galt - I this it should be spelled as OS X, please correct me if i'm wrong.. ;-)
Hope that helps,
Shlomi

• Sunfire X2250 endless restarting after putting on all 'security' updates

Hello all, yeserday I did a fresh Solaris install and once that was done i ran updatemanager. I selected only the 'security' updates. They downloaded and then installed. I then got a screen prompted me to reboot, so i ticked the box and let the machine do its thing. So the machine goes through and installs the remaining patches and the reboots. Upon reboot right after grub where i select Solaris to boot i get the Sun solaris copyright screen and right after that a bunch of 'unknown symbol' messages all over the place. The machine doesn't even get back to the desktop or login and enters maintenace mode. I was stuck at this point, I didn't know what to do and couldn't go any further and so I did a complete reinstall of the OS again. Once it came back up I again ran updatemanager and selected only the 'security' updates. It did the same thing again! upon the shutdown/reboot sequence the system hangs again, endless reboot loop. Why are these basic security patches messing up the machine? is there a known bad patch that bonks everything? I now have everything reinstalled again (3rd OS reinstall) and it's running great but i'm scared to run the patches again. Can anyone please help or provide an explaination? thank you very much in advance

Thanks for your reply, scapesuiter.
I suppose i can rule out third party software, as, after i reinstalled my OS after the first freezing (after 2007-003), i did not add anything else. At that point there was nothing on my computer but what came on the original install disks. I tried downloading and installing 2007-003 again and the same thing happened, and i had to reinstall again.
However, i do have 1GB RAM that i did not order from Apple. My computer originally came with 512 but i bought more some time ago (can't remember exactly when).
I also bought a new hard drive, also not from Apple, at around the same time.
But i should say again that i've had no problems since getting the new hardware, other than with these particular security updates (2007-003 and 2006-007). All the other security updates went well, as well as all other software updates.
(I also did a hardware check with my Apple Hardware Test disk and it indicated that everything was working fine.)

• Monitor viewing area after security update

Last week I installed the most recent 10.4 security update. Since then, the viewable area of my monitor has decreased. Specifically, the veiwable area has shifted down below the viewable area of the screen. I adjusted this as much as I could with the monitor's settings, but it is still low. If I matters, I'm running a quad G5 with a LaCie 120. I was having no problems like this of any kind before I did the update. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? thanks

See if zapping PRAM helps:
Hold down optcmnd+PR on startup, and listen for 3 "bongs". Then let go of all keys.

• Are the security updates included in 10.6.7?

I am new to MAC so I am still getting used to the update feature on Mac vs. PC.
Recently I upgraded the Mac OS X from 10.6.6 to 10.6.7 via the software update. Did that include the security patches, or do I need to do an additional update of just those patches?
Thanks in advance for any assistance to a newbie...

LOL!
Apple doesn't issue security updates unless there is some vulnerability that's been found.
That's certainly true. It's also true that most of those security updates are potential vulnerabilities that could happen. They don't mean that there is some exploit running amuck in the wild infecting Mac systems.
Agreed, there were only couple that got into the wild and they were harmless and yes, they are only "potential" or proof-of-concept.
There are a number of people reinstalling 10.6.6 because of a side effect of the 10.6.7 update. If your livelihood depends on being able create PDF documents using OpenType (Adobe) fonts, you just might want to take the very minor risk of staying with 10.6.6 for the time being.
If my livelihood depended on Adobe, I think I'd shoot myself

• After applying Security Update 2006-001 can't launch Office X apps

I noticed that, after applying Security Update 2006-001, I can't launch Microsoft Word nor Excel nor Power Point (Office X, 10.1.6 updated). If I double click the app icon, select and try to open from File menu or try to launch it from the Dock, I get the message "The app has unexpectedly quit". This does not affect Entourage so far. I can open existing files double clicking on their icons and, once the app is running, create new files from menu bar. Repaired permissions, checked for corrupted preferences files or templates but to no avail.
Can anybody help?
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   512 MB RAM

DivX Doctor is a freeware I had downloaded a few days before applying Security Update 2006-01 (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/4683). It certainly was responsible for my problems with Office X apps because, as I said, they completely disappeared as soon as I got rid of it.
I hadn't the memory problems you mentioned (I've applied also Security update 2006-02 without problems).
Don't know if this can help, but you might want to give a try to Disk inventory X (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14393)
Disk Inventory X is a disk usage utility for Mac OS X. It shows the sizes of files and folders in a special graphical way called "treemaps".
If you've ever wondered were all your disk space has gone, Disk Inventory X will help you to answer this question.
Once DiskWarrior fixed a problem with free hard disk space on my machine, even though a small one.

• 8.0.1. update + security update, now I can't restart my MacPro?

I ran "Software Update", it found a Logic Studio 8.0.1 update and a security update.
I click Install 2 Items
It downloads and installs and then prompts me to restart.
I click Restart and nothing happens -- my system doesn't restart?
So I try to "Shutdown" and after several minutes of nothing at all (not even a processing rainbow), it finally comes back saying it can't shutdown because my Email is still running.
So I click quit on Email and try again, once again nothing.
So I'm stuck in a state where my MacPro will not shutdown nor restart. Any suggestions other than holding down the power button for 4 seconds?
Great job Apple, love these updates already -- ****! Where did you get the testers for these updates, 3rd grade school?

I found how to shutdown the OS without a hard power down.
Under the Apple icon (upper left corner), select "Force Quit..." -- it will list the applications currently running and I can select the "offending" application (in my case Email).
This got to a point where I could do a "safe restart".
I had left my Mac for 30 minutes to see if it would restart after the update, but it never did. Under Tiger the "Force Quit" option was available with a right click on the icon in my dock. Apparently under Leopard this has changed.
But the real issue here is:
1. Why did installing the LP8 update and 1 security update put me in this situation in the first place?
My guess is that NO ONE at Apple has a test system that represents a very common situation among users, those that updated from Tiger to Leopard without wiping everything out and starting from scratch. I'm almost positive Apple test on systems that have clean images and they just keep restoring the images to a clean state before each test. Which is completely NOT representative of the real world of users. In other words, very basic testing. I mean come on, the install goes out to lunch because I had my Mail program open. At the very least is should come back and say "please close XYZ program before continuing". I'm sorry but this is just SLOPPY work, very sloppy, and very unprofessional.
I've NEVER had a software update do this before! Sorry for my frustration, but I don't expect these types of problems on Apple's controlled hardware/software platform. On Microsoft platforms, sure I've learnt to accept it, but I expect more from Apple and pay more to Apple and in return I do expect it to "just work" (do what their ads claim).
Rob.
