Art student wanting to do stop motion video or a moving image film

Hi
I'm very new at this but am interested in Stop Motion or at least moving illustrative work. I'm a masters art student and have been put down as a 'video art' discipline. I have always been interested in the work by William Kentridge who illustrates and films it using a video camera, illustrating frame by frame, stop motion style. Has anyone ever done anything like that or have heard or can direct me to illustrative work that would be classified as 'video art'. I'm not sure where to start and what programs would be best to use. I am proficient with Photoshop. Any help and advice would be awesome.

Your one sentence is art in itself! My sentence is puny compared to that!

One could argue that all video is art. Myself, I lean more to defining it as craft, but there you go. Please define art in a short sentence.
Hi Jim,
There is a lot of confusion regarding the difference between art and craft.
Craft tends to focus on technique, like good pacing in a video edit,
color-correcting with an understanding of color theory, composing a shot well, etc.
Sometimes the more creative examples of craft are called art.
People talk about the artwork of a advertisement, or a Smoke artist.
A trained artist can offer a lot of originality and skill to a video/film
production, but generally the work must support a story,
so it stays in the domain of craft. For example, in David Lynch's
Mulholland Drive, one could argue that the lighting and camerawork are craft,
and the storyline and editing are art.
In ancient times, art and craft were the same.
For example, the Greek word for art is τεχνι, i.e. technique.
Another approach to art is think of it as a way to create beauty.
Classical art of every culture includes examples of this. Even today
many people have a difficult time with contemporary art because
it often does not strive for beauty.
A more up-to-date definition of art involves language. There are
many kinds of language--natural languages like English,
the language of film conventions, the language of choreography, etc.
English, for example, can be used to express all kinds of things,
from software manuals to impassioned love letters; but poetry
is a very special form of English usage. The essence of poetry
is playing with the language. Sure, sometimes it rhymes, sometimes
it is beautiful, sometimes it is very expressive, but deep down
the artistic aspect of poetry is using language in a different way.
An important aspect of contemporary art is the idea that
it doesn't express a clear message. A TV commercial might be
very clever and "artsy", but the message must be clear: You
Want Our Product. A work of art tries to be much more elusive,
so that the viewer in engaged in a kind of cat-and-mouse game
with meaning.
A one-sentence definition of art? Uh, let me give it a try:
"Art is the manipulation of linguistic conventions so that
the multiplicity of possible meanings form a structure that is
interesting."

I'm trying to make "Stop motion videos"  in Final Cut EXPRESS by using 100's of still photos and setting them to music.  They are coming out blurry if viewed larger than 4x6 in size.
I don't understand why this is happening.

Quick follow up, since I was on my phone earlier and am back to a real keyboard.
To access Easy Setup, hit Control Q.
If you click on the blue discosure triangles, a dropdown menu with about a dozen different presets will be displayed. Select the one you want, (Here, I've selected 720P.)
Whatever you select for a preset will not be applied until you make a new sequence. (I don't like to have sequences with different properties in the same project so I prefer to make a new project if I change the Easy Setup.)
Because photo aspect ratios are different than video, I typically put a solid generator of some compatible color on the first track (v1) and put my photos on the track above (v2). Looks better, IMO, than black bars. There are other creative ways to display them. And of course, you could scale them up to fill the frame…but then you probably would have to re-position them.
    Good luck.

If you've got a few minutes, and just want to sit back and see a stop-motion video by a young film maker (and I mean young), take a look at this THREAD. The link to YouTube is down the discussion. I did not remove the link from the thread, so you could see what equipment was used to do the PrE (version 1.0 !)  work - who needs a super workstation?

  • Premiere Pro Won't Export a Stop Motion Video Without Making it a Complete Mess

I'm having the problem I described in the title.  I can't fix it on my own.

OK, so what codec are you using when you export?  Does it match the sequence settings?
It might be a problem with Windows Media Player - try opening the file in a different player (like quicktime) to rule that out.
Also, what is the image format of the stills in the sequence?  Sometimes Premiere doesn't like jpegs for some reason.
Finally, there are alternatives - you could use Photoshop or After Effects instead.

  • Videos-Sound plays, Moving image does not.

All of the videos I have from bonus albums won't play the actual video. I get sound and a static image. Files are linked. They're in my iTunes folder. Is this a bug with the upgrade? Do I need to change a setting? They show up in my library but don't show up in the Movies library tab either.

Usually when moving layers between images, one would use the move tool
(click on the image in the document window and drag to the other document)
and hold the shift key down if you want the layer pin registered (aligned and
the images are of the same dimensions) and if the images are of different
dimensions, holding down the shift key centers the new layer.

  • Stop Motion using photos + combining with video clips

We have about 3000 sequenced photos we want to put together into a Stop Motion video. We would also like to add an actual video clip to the beginning and to the end of the Stop Motiuon segment. Can this all be done in Premiere Pro? If so how? If not - what other Creative Cloud programs should we use and how?
    Thanks.

Why did you ask a new question when you already asked in http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1389086

  • Stop Motion

I am trying to create a movie with both video clips AND stop motion. I have searched and searched but i havent found a clear answer. I have already inserted all the video clips that I want for the intro. Now I just need to insert the stop motion part. HELP!

Do a search on how to manage Sequential Image files.
Basically ...Select All> Import>  multiple files and check  as sequence.
I would do it in AEFX and create a digital intermediate files.   Others wil have a different opion on that workflow.
Jim - if you lock a Post / THread..how about putting "Locked" in the Title.
That post also had the additional info asked for.

  • Imovie frame speed adjustment for stop motion

Now I'm on imovie 10.0.6, I can't seem to get the software to let me adjust my frame speed.
I'm working with stills, that I want to edit into a stop motion piece for some of the film, and show other images as stills for other sections.
The speed editor is greyed out, as is the FF option. Also, the duration is showing in seconds, where as in old imovie i would go into the preferences to show frames per second.
Any one overcome this issue and can help how I get the functionality I need?
    thanks

your workflow is - sorry to say that - a bit ... inconvenient
the usual workflow is: record using some plain green or blue background, create matte/key new background in, color-process video.
'matting by hand' skips 50 years of video-processing ...
you can accomplish that with iMovie, Motion or FCPX. iM and FCPX come with a bundle of 'presets' which allow similar coloring/contrasting/de-saturation as pixlr. FCPX for sure allows much more, in detail manual manipulations of color, although the 'video' tab in iMovie11 offers enough 'knobs' to create the few looks pixlr offers. Motion wouldn't be my first choice, as the app's name implies, it is basicly not meant for such simple color-corrections.

  • Is premier pro used for stop motion if so how ?

    hi
    There
    guys
as part of a project i have been tasked with producing a stop motion
in Regards to editing such a project is it possible to edit within primer pro
and slow the frame rate down ???

If you already have a video you want to work from, you can also make a stop-motion from that without too much trouble.
    1. Put your video into a sequence
    2. Place a marker at each frame you want in the stop-motion
    3. In the program monitor export a frame at each marker, be sure to check the import into project box
    4. Select all the exported frames, right-click and set the duration you want for each
    5. Create stop-motion sequence from the selected frames

  • Can I use canon eos40d for stop motion capture in premiere elements 9?

I Want too do stop motion capture but when I click get media, the pop up dialog box proceeda as if to import still photos. How do I get the "capture panel" that is talked about where I can select stop motion?  Is premiere elements 9 supposed to work with a still camera like mine for stop motion at all?   Thanks!!'  Kimberley

Thanks for the reply. This is my take on the situation that you describe.
    You wrote
The camera was linked to PC with USB cable and then the software showed on the PC what would normally be in the camera viewfinder.  The enter key on the PC worked as a shutter release and onion skinning worked.  Can premiere elements do this?
That more or less describes the Premiere Elements Webcam experience if Premiere Elements recognized the Webcam.
If you have made a USB connection between the Canon 40D and the computer and you are not getting a Capture Window when you use Premiere Elements' Add Media Webcam or WDM compatible device, then Premiere Elements does not support that simple route. It is my understanding that WDM compatible device represents Windows Driver Model (a framework for device drivers).
I have done some Google searching, and I have found instance where claims have been made for the Canon 40D as a webcam. I post one of these links for informational and non promotional purposes.
    http://extrawebcam.com/
Have you explore any utilities that came with the Canon that might supply drivers for the Canon as a webcam?
Have you tried to use the Canon 40D as a webcam with Windows Movie Maker?
Please review and consider. (Also, 9.0.1 Update can be downloaded and installed from the project's Help Menu/Update or obtained online from

We will be watching for further developments.

  • Stop-motion with camera?

I have a school project where I need to animate a stop-motion video. We used a Canon 7D to take pictures and I imported them in lightroom. What I need to do now is take all of these frames and put them together to make the video. I tried manually doing it, but it came out all shaky. There has to be an easier way then to manually do it like that.
    Please help
    Thanks
    -RJ

I'm guessing that the jerkiness is based on the camera's moving from one photo to the next. While Flash has an onion-skin function for the timeline, aligning a lot of imported photos will be a long and painful process. Flash isn't really the right tool for this sort of thing. Photoshop, on the other hand, has a crop and straighten photos function that will organize all of your photos while you sit and sip your coffee. It's in the File... Automate... menu. When you have the photos aligned and cropped, you can then export a video file straight from Photoshop.

  • Stop motion troubles

I just finished work on a stop motion video involving a crew of LEGO characters fighting to the death.  However, when I go to the begining in the timeline and try to watch it the whole way through, it messes up.  The video will play for a while, then it will freeze on an image while the playhead keeps going.  It's like my computer is freezing up on me, but I know that this is not the case.  Is it a problem with the actual footage, or is it just the program's fault?  Is there a way to smooth things over so I can view what I have created so far?

Oddly enough, all of the problems were mostly fixed as soon as I posted this question...
Also, I was unware that I had to render the footage, and things seemed to run smoother when I finally did.  Thanks for your effort though.

  • Stop motion apps

I think we need some stop motion apps on windows phones because I like to make stop motion videos and on other phones we can download stop motion apps

great idea but it is up to developers to step up to the plate, not much we can do here.

  • Stop motion FCPX

Can stop motion video be done with FCPX like it can be done with adobe?

Are you looking to do real stop motion? Or create a stop motion effect from video? (the answer is yes for both... but obviously different depending on which you are trying to do.)
