Artifacts appearing in dark continuous tone areas in LR5.3

Hi,
Since the update to LR 5.3 release I have noticed, in one particular instance, that artifacts are appearing in dark and continious tone areas (e.g. Dark blue skies) and it seems to be introduced by the Vibrance slider.
I use Canon equipment and have always increased the vibrance (to 25) on import as it improves to tone of the images.
Is there any way to verify this apart from reloading a previous version of Lightroom to see if it happens as I don't ever recall it happening before and doesn't seem to happen in the other RAW processors I use. I also tested it in CS6 (Camera RAW 8.3) and it doesn't appear there.
My environment is:
OS: Windows 7 64-bit V6.1 SP 1
Proc: 4 x 2195 MHz (8 logical) Intel I7-2720 QM
Built-in memory: 8GB
NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M, 1GB

Hi,
Did further checking, as requested yesterday, and even checked a DNG created for previous versions of ACR.
The artifacting is noticable at all zoom levels from 1:4 upwards but more so at 1:1. Also more noticable in the Develop module than the Library module. The attached image shows it at 100% zoom with the following settings.
You will see that the artifacting is mode noticable in the areas on either side of the Stupa between that and the buildings.
White Balance ... As Shot 4950/+12
Exposure ... +0.75
Contrast ... + 4
Highlights ... -7
Shadows ... +7
Whites ... +41
Blacks ... -3
Clarity ... 0
Vibrance ... +25

  • HiIs there a way to print continuous tone on old HP5000 BW printer, instead of halftone output?

I am using a HP5000 printer and want to reproduce newsletters. All the images (continuous tone) are outputing as halftones. Is it possible to print continuous tone with this laser printer?

    Hey there PrincessCupcake!
Thanks for the detailed post back to me.
If this was at one time an option for you and now is not, it would make sense to me that an update of some sort had made the option null and void for you, especially if you have completely uninstalled the printer driver and software and then reinstalled it. If the option was going to be available, doing the uninstall and reinstall would have fixed it in a jiffy.
I am out of ideas as to any other cause besides an update, as you mentioned. If you have installed the printer on another computer, see if the options are there, if not, they aren't available.
    Happy Monday to you

  • Since update of my MAC my Notes no longer appear on my Mac but are still available through iCloud on my iPhone and iPad. How do I get my MAC to sync with the other devices as e'thing else has synced on my MAC through iCloud.

Since update of my Mac Book Pro my previously drafted Notes no longer appear on my Mac but are still available through iCloud on my iPhone and iPad. How do I get my Mac to sync with the other devices as e'thing else has synced on my MAC through iCloud. Also since the update Notes no longer appear as a folder in "Mail" but are now a distinct programme-is there any way of returning Notes to the Mail programme?

Thanks, but I've been on the phone with AppleCare US (where I am and live) and AppleCare UK. They continue bouncing me back and forth without helping resolve the problem.
Perhaps someones knows how to further escalate the issue at Apple?

  • Continuous tone image resolution lower than specified

The following message was posted in the incorrect forum; no legitimate solution to the problem was ever posted. I am re-posting it, as this is the same exact problem I am having, right down to the OS and version of Acrobat. Could someone please explain to me what this means and whether or not I should be concerned about it? I will also get two different kinds of results... one is a single number effective ppi on this error, such as 199, (which results in 200ppi if run through PitStop), and a two-number effective ppi, which we haven't been able to decipher, such as 501.357/179.55ppi (which should be a hi-resolution image).
    Help?

    > All text should export as vector, since it's all on a layer above any kind of image.
Is there any transparency in the text, though? If you float text over
an image with transparency, it MUST be exported as an image. If it is
floated over vector art with transparency, it MIGHT.
It's easy to assume that just because something is on top, it doesn't
ever need to be flattened. This is not in fact true.
    >
    >I am a little concerned: is this a flaw in the Acrobat Program?
You mean in its preflight? Unlikely, it isn't rocket science to
calculate ppi, so the numbers are probably right.
    >
    >Where is this "Continuous tone image resolution" turned on/off? Why is it important?
That's probably a reference to Distiller settings. I think we've
established that you aren't using Distiller.
    >
    >Is InDesignCS2 flattening to low transparency settings, even though my settings dictate high?
You'd probably need to ask in the InDesign forum. But bear in mind
that the flattener is free to use lower resolution if it thinks that
is all that is needed for particular effects.
Maybe you could reopen the PDF in Illustrator, and use that to select
the images in the flattened page. Might illuminate what is going on.

  • My ring and text tones are not working?

Both my ring tone and text alert tone are not working. I'm only made aware I have a call or text message through the phone's vibration. I have checked all the 'Sound' settings and all appears to be fine and ringer volume slid to high.
Do I need to reboot this phone for them to work as I'm not sure how to do this? I'm using iPhone 4 version 5.0.1
Would I loose all my files and apps on my iPhone after rebooting?
Appreciate any clear help and advice on this popular subject that is available.
    Best wishes

Thank so much Ingo2711, your suggestion has solved my problem. I am so new to the iPhone I didn't realise it had a handy little mute button and it was infact switched onto 'mute'.
And thank you for the rebooting advice too.

I was just going "...wow, ouch..." at the screenshot and since the model name looked old (and a quick google afterwards revealed that it wasn't), I marvelled at how Linux could manage to display so many colors [on the supposedly old hardware I thought was sitting behind that model name].
Crazy thought, but it sparked an idea: perhaps lower the display depth?

  • Key scenes on DVD appear too dark!

I've recently finished a project in which many of the poorly lit but viewable scenes from a wedding appear way darker than on the Mac screen or the cam itself. Having read through the forums I now realise that the Imovie rendering/process to IDvd can lose 10-15% of the brightness (i think that was the quote?) Anyone got any ideas for a work around other than redoing it (or them) in Final Cut, which would be a nightmare! (Does everyone agree that ImovieHD's brightness effect is useless? Are there custom plugin's that are any better?)
    Found this quote below....from http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3189924&#3189924
"This is a by-product of the way the compression works. There are other DVD authoring tools that I have read provide better results in poorly lit scenes but these will start at several hundred dollars."
What are they? Is this really true?
    Thanks in advance.....

The best thing you can do is hook at least an inexpensive TV to the output on your camera so you get an idea of how it looks on a TV while you edit. Depending on your monitor calibration, it is quite possible that an image is darker on your computer screen than on a TV. Of course the better the NTSC monitor (the TV), the more accurate everything will be. I don't know of any iMovie plug-ins, but when clients bring me reception video from say a Canon camera that has a 7 lux rating (very poor in low light), I apply a gamma "filter" in FC to make the scene appear brighter. Maybe there is some sort of gamma plug-in for iMovie?
As far as better encoding software, I would look at Mpressionist, http://www.digigami.com/products.html. I hear it's the best. Others prefer BitVice, http://www.innobits.se/.
And hardware encoders are coming down in price as well... within the range of us mere mortals: http://www.optibase.com/Content.aspx?id=79 which probably yields the best results.
All that said, if you are looking for more professional results, you will need some sort of infrastructure to achieve them. What I mean by that is right now you don't know if the scenes are darker only on your computer monitor or if they are darker on an NTSC monitor. I can say that LCD camera screens tend to be far brighter than the "real" image recorded. And finally, the only way to be sure of anything is to use hardware scopes!

    Hi sergio.cajiao,
Here are some troubleshooting ideas for video playback issues:
Troubleshooting iTunes for Windows Vista or Windows 7 video playback performance issues

If that does not resolve the issue, you may want to report it to iTunes by following this article:

  • Huge, crazy artifacts appear when using filters. Help?

For some reason, in a particular file I'm using, whenever I use a filter, very strange artifacts appear. Here is an example of what I'm talking about:
The only things that SHOULD be visible are the words "Example of Issue" and the red lines. When I apply the Motion Blur filter, the yellow, pink, green, and blue artifacts appear. If I undo, the artifacts dissapear, but when I re-do, they will reappear (although they are in different places and look different each time). I can select and delete them like any other pixels.
Restarting Photoshop and re-opening the file doesn't fix the issue. This only happens with this specific psd. I'm using Photoshop CS5 on Mac OS 10.6.8. Does anyone know what's going on?

The file could be corrupt, but I'm not sure how that would lead to further corruption.
Do you have another computer handy that you could load that file on, and see if the problem follows the file?  (and if so, email ccox(at) adobe (dot) com to get me a copy of that file)
But that really looks like the sort of artifacts you get from bad RAM or a bad video card.

  • Canon Pro9000 Mark II prints dark color tones muddy on gloss paper

Boss accidentally bought gloss print paper, but I figured that might work out for our art renderings. However the ink bleeds... strangely, only on dark color tones. Image is below. It's a Canon Pro9000 Mark II.  It seems to be dark tones that bleed only. The light gray is perfect, and even a well-saturated yellow-orange looks decent. It doesn't appear to be the saturation or amount of ink that is the problem, but the darkness of the color. Is it the printer, the paper, or the ink? Is there a solution?

It really doesn't matter if you don't have the proper profile for the paper.  Do you?  If not you really can't use that paper at all.  You might try to see if another profile will work but that is mostly fool's play.  The correct profile is mandatory. Most good paper suppliers provide the correct ICC profiles for their paper.  Canon, Red River, Moab, Artic, etc.

  • Mac Pro Freezes and horizontal artifacts appear on Display

My Mac Pro display began glitching while using After effects yesterday. The display colors became very strange and horizontal artifacts appeared. Everything froze and I couldn't force quit. After a minute the problem cleared up and all was well. Then today the glitches got more frequent and the whole machine froze up showing the same, but random horizontal artifacts along with strange colors. I can't move the mouse or force close programs. I've had to power off the machine by holding the power button down. I did that twice today and both times the computer started normally and then the problem came back a minute after start up. The mouse and keyboard also started losing power yesterday and today. A quick unplug and plug in fixed that problem. I have been using After effects 8 hours a day for about 4 weeks straight Perhaps that but some strain on the graphics card. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Here's a link to a picture of what the display looks like:

Those sorts of artifacts are unlikley to be a software or configuration problem.
The Apple firmware 5770 (about US$250) works in every model Mac Pro (65lb tower), but may have minor problems if you play copy-protected movies. It requires 10.6.5 or later, so you would have to upgrade if you are still on 10.5.8.
You lose AppleTalk-over-Ethernet in the 10.5 to 10.6 transition, if that is an issue for you.

Could someone please advise on my current problem? Apparantly I can no longer download tones to my phone or account to be used as such since the tones are being downloaded as songs that cannot be transferred or placed in the tones area for the phone or in iTunes. Prior to the last update, this was always an option. I have also noticed that the Ringtones and Alert Tones are not showing up in my recent purchases as well to allow for me to place them back on my phone and there for require for them to be purchased again... Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've discovered that all tones purchased will be downloaded as ringtones, BUT they can be utilized as tones and assigned as alert tones on the iPhone...

I've tried resetting my phone, looking for the pics in the new 'deleted' folder. I tried forwarding the jpegs to sees if they'll appear in a new message (but turnout the phone won't let me forward these pics). Apple is trying to say it's the 30 day reason, but I know that is not the problem. ALl of my pics older than 30 days were viewable. It is the upgrade that screwed this up. Help! Important pics!

Try this to learn about using keys:

You can also use your PC mouse.
As for iPhoto, it sounds like you were trying to move files around in the library. That is a bib no-no in Aperture or iPhoto.

I took my iPhone to the Service center of M/s RSG INFOTECH PRIVATE LIMITED on April 17, 2014.
Why are you posting in this forum about what occured with an independent service provider?  How is is at all relevant to Apple??  In fact, service by any person or business not authorized by Apple voids any waranty.

Firstly, I purchased my first iPhone a few years ago, since then there have been a lot of apps released, a lot which I downloaded for free, tried and deleted from both my phone and my iTune 'Apps' Panel. What bothers me is when I do get a new iOS device, iPad and/or iPhone 5, and I don't want to just copy the back-up of my current iOS device to the new one, then to get the apps I want I will have to scroll through countless useless 'trash' applications in my purchase history to 'cloud download' the ones I want.
Just sync the apps you want from your computer. You don't need to redownload them directly on the iPhone Purchased list.
Will Apple be employing such a feature, a 'permanently delete/un-purchase' feature?
    Dunno.
