ASUS P5W DH Deluxe kernel panic ACPI & IDE controller is

I recently built a new system with the ASUS P5W DH Deluxe motherboard.  Using the newISOs (both the new kernel and old) available on the forums I tried to install Arch only to be met with an extremely nondescript kernel panic (just a bunch of numbers followed by kernel panic).  After a bit of fiddling with it I managed to get the system to boot to the installation shell by giving it the "acpi=off" boot parameter.
After figuring this out I thought I was set, but I was so very wrong.  The IDE harddrive I was trying to install to was on the Jmicron JMB363 IDE controller that seems to have been hacked together and thrown in at the last second to allow 4 IDE devices in the system (something to do with the Intel specification for the 975X chipset I believe.)
Anyway, the system mounts my primary SATA harddrive "sda" just fine.  It then proceeds to load my two PATA DVD+RW drives: "hda" and "hdb" from the intel IDE controller just fine.  Then while trying to load the my PATA harddrive "hde" from the Jmicron JMB363 IDE controller, the installation slows to a crawl requiring several minutes before the system boots and throwing errors along the way.  The harddrive is also unusable in the system.  If I try to do something like "cfdisk /dev/hde" the system will hard lock and require a reboot.
Is there something I've configured incorrectly or is this perhaps a support issue with the Jmicron JMB363 controller.  Also, why do I need to turn ACPI off to avoid a kernel panic?  I should probably mention that there is a bios option that can be turned on or off to support ACPI 2.0 (disabled by default).
Thanks for any input!

I'm running archlinux on a P5W DH Deluxe.  Personally, I disabled JMicron in the BIOS as the drivers for it are pretty buggy from what I've read.  I'm just using the ICHR PATA/SATA Controller (I have an SATA disk and a PATA DVDRW).  I have it set to AHCI mode in the BIOS (this is the most compatible mode and faster for sata drives).  It might look like it's frozen during boot, but there is a device that causes problems and takes a minute or so for the kernel to give up on it and continue booting.
If you want to use the JMicron controller, there is a flag you can pass to the kernel in your grub menu.conf (I think it's "ALL-GENERIC-IDE" (no quotes) and you might have to pass "irqpoll" as well.  I got it working once but haven't used it for a while, so this may have changed.  You might want to look into JMICRON_PATA.
There are some issues with the linux kernel and the P5W.
The bridge between the ICHR to the EZRaid controller isn't recognized by the kernel yet, so it will give some error messages and with a few 30 second pauses between them (which is a pain... I don't know of a way to disable the controller though).  I've heard that if you attach a SATA hard disks to BOTH the EZRaid controller and the ICHR it's supposed to avoid it, but I don't want to install an extra hard disk.
The kernel seems to have have problems keeping time with the P5W.  I tried installing openntpd to help with it, but it only help a little... moving the clock by about 10 seconds every couple of minutes.  I found ntpd does a little better job (altering it by about 1 second every 5-10 minutes).  I think this is the cause of some glitches during video playback for me.
I haven't had any luck getting any kind of suspend working with the P5W.  It can suspend, but it won't resume.  Resetting the computer after a suspend makes it freeze just before you can access the BIOS screen.  The only way to recover is to turn-off the power supply on the back for a minute or so and starting it up.  It will run for a few seconds and shutdown (some kind of weird hardware reset?).  After that it will boot normally.
Let me know how your progress goes.  I'd like to know if you come across any fixes for the above.

  • 10.4.9 Upgrade: Fails. Reboot results in Kernel Panic ACPI error

I am upgrading 11 MacBook Pros 10.4.6 to 10.4.9. Becasue they are all on a slow Wifi I am using the manual updates via a thumb drive.
So far 2 out of 6 have failed the install process. One gave me a general error. I tried to re-run the program but when I did the font for the drop down menu turned into all boxes with capital As inside them. In both cases when I have rebooted I have gotten a Kernel Panic ACPI error. I have tried all the Kernel Panic tricks mentioned in the 10.4.9 threads. I am now reinstalling on the two machines.
1 of 6 did the install just fine but is now stopped on the "Starting Mac OS X..." screen with a full blue bar.
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong?

You may find the following useful:
From a recent article at MacFixit:
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Special Report: Update procedure recommendation
First, make a full backup of your current Mac OS X installation -- preferably a clone ( try SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner). If something goes wrong, or you experience a major incompatibility after updating, the backup will prove invaluable.
Next, if you are the cautious type, run a disk repair on the volume targeted for installation. You can use an n alternative startup drive or your Mac OS X installation disc. If you are starting up from your Mac OS X install disc, put the disc in your optical drive and restart holding down the "C" key. After your system starts up and you've selected your language, go to the "Utilties" menu and select "Disk Utility." Use the "Repair Disk" function. After disk repairs are complete, restart from your normal startup drive and continue.
Avoid performing any other operations (in Mac OS X or third-party applications) while the update process is occurring.
Performing other tasks during the update process potentiates various issues, including problems with prebinding (which is happening during the "Optimizing the system" phase of the update process) and others that can occur when files are being replaced by the update are also being read/written by the currently logged in user. You should not only refrain from launching applications or working with files during the update process, but also from putting the system to sleep, disconnecting/connecting devices, and other potentially interruptive actions.
In addition, before installing the update, make sure all Apple-installed applications and utilities are in their original locations. Moving one of these applications to a different location on your hard drive can lead to an incomplete update. Also, disconnect any FireWire/USB devices before applying Mac OS X 10.4.9 (except for your startup drive, if it is FireWire or USB, and your keyboard/mouse), then re-connect the devices one by one (checking for issues created by any particular device) after the update process is complete and the system has restarted. Also, note that the first restart after applying Mac OS X 10.4.9 may be abnormally long. Subsequent restarts should take place at normal speed.
And this further article from MacFixit is also very important:
When a Mac OS X update won't install with "Volume does not meet requirements for this update" message
The error message "Volume does not meet requirements for this update" may appear when attempting to install a Mac OS X updater or a full release from disc. Generally the problem falls into one of the following categories:
Make sure you are using the right updater (Server vs. client) There are usually a few varieties of the same Mac OS X update version. Make sure that you are not trying to install the Intel client build on a PowerPC-based Mac, or the Server build on a Mac OS X client system.
Although we generally recommend using the standalone Mac OS X updaters rather than Software Update, the latter method will generally correctly identify the copy of Mac OS X applicable to your current system state.
Retail vs. shipped-with-system (build numbers) Different Macs ship with different builds of Mac OS X, and one build may not be compatible with a different system. The build that ships with a MacBook Core 2 Duo, for instance, may not properly install on a Mac Pro. Hence you may receive the "Volume does not meet requirements for this update" message when mixing and matching systems and discs.
Some retail copies of Mac OS X 10.4.x may also be unable to install on some systems that require newer builds.
In addition, it appears that while some builds will install on specific systems, those systems will then refuse to accept subsequent updates. To ensure compatibility, inspect the following matrices:
    • Mac OS: Versions, builds included with Intel-based Macs
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303315
    • Mac OS: Versions, builds included with PowerPC Macs (since 1998)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
and note that you should not use a Mac OS version earlier than the one included with the computer.
Combo vs. Delta Remember that delta Mac OS X updaters can only update systems version-to-version, e.g. Mac OS X 10.4.8 to Mac OS X 10.4.9. Combo updaters can bring any version within the scope of a major release (Panther, Tiger, etc.) up-to-date, e.g. Mac OS X 10.4.3 to Mac OS X 10.4.9.
Attempting to run a delta update on anything other than the directly precedent version may result in the "Volume does not meet requirements for this update" message.

  • Mid 2010 Macbook Pro Keeps Restarting due to Kernel Panic. Ideas for how to fix?

So my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro keeps randomly restarting, and giving me a screen that says something like "your computer restarted due to a problem."
Looks like it as a kernel panic, but I have no idea what this is.  Seems to be no pattern for when it crashes.  Used to do it maybe once a month and now this is the 5th time in two days.
Any idea what might be going on? Looked at past threads but nothing seemed to apply.

  • Kernel Panic any idea?

    Hello,
in the moment I clicked on a folder alias in Dock, screen went black, and I got the note "your computer restarted because of a problem ......". Never happened before, Mac Mini, late 2012, 2,3 i7, 16GB ram, Yosemite 10.10.3. Any idea about that?

Yosemite broke TRIM apps. See this explanation https://www.cindori.org/update-on-trim-in-yosemite/
I see Chameleon now support TRIM in OS X 10.10.3. However, I was under the impression that most users especially with Apple drives were better off not using TRIM.
    On the Chameleon site:
    Warning!
Patching trim means modify the kext (driver) responsible for managing disks. The change is reversible and you can always manually reset it. Enabling patch is your responsibility and at your own risk.
It certainly won't hurt to try reset NVRAM.

  • Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro and ASUS P5W DH Deluxe Motherbo

I am currently trying to get my soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum Pro to work with this board. I have dis-abled the onboard sound but still no luck. Has anyone managed to get this to work? I am currently using the so called Hi quality onboard sound but it's nowhere near as good as my dedicated card. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you...Rob

Is there no one out there that can help?

  • BootCamp works fine, Parallels no US-Support, WMWare give Kernel Panics

    Hello
I am looking for a solution to get a virtual envoirement running on some mac.
We have some industrial applications connected over USB running with Windows XP Pro. Bootcamp is for us not usefull because we need mac and windows apps at the same time
    1) Installing it in BootCamp everthing works fine and the machines are able to communicate with the windows Software
    2) Installing Parallels 4 is possible. We see the machine with USB and load the drivers with Parallels is not able to communicate with the machine. We tried both, a clean windows install and a migration of the working bootcamp volume. Both without success (all patches and tools are loaded)
    3) Installing VMWare Fusion 2.01 works at the first impression. The Drivers are loaded The Apps are able to communicate with the machine but as soon as the Apps are closed it gives a kernel panics (any idea how to restart remotely??)
Also here we tried both, a clean windows install and a migration of the working bootcamp volume. Both without success (all patches and tools are loaded)
The developer of the machine only support windows and has no interest to debug and find a solution. BootCamp works so the Apps are OK for me.
The Support of Parallels is very bad. I bought a support ticket but no reactions within 24 hours. For VMWare I was to late to get support.
Does someone know of such a bug in VMWare or is this more a bug of OS X 10.5.6, The VMWare Fusion 2.0.1 is from the time OS X 10.5.5 was available. On the Support side of VMWare I doesn't find any solution regarding Kernel Panics
Who is able to help me?
    Regards
    Gérard

Brand new Macbook air. 10.7.3 . Random Kernel panics daily. Firefox, Word docs. opening sytem preferences, clicking on a link, just about anything crashes the system. Apple told me to take it to a local tech. He found nothing wrong with hardware. . Also shuts down (power off) after lid is closed on battery power. Did smc reset with no results. Computer is almost unusable for any real work.  we have three other macs with 10.6 that have never crashed in three years.  Lion has issues! Need fix

  • Nothing but kernel panics

Got an iMac G5 w/ latest OS that was having problems. "Fixed" them w/ TechTools, now whenever I turn it on all I get is a screen that looks like a kernel panic. Ideas, hints, etc?

See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein.
Re: The TechTool Pro version level issue. Version 4.0.4 or later is compatible with Tiger. Always be sure to use only Tiger-compatible disk utilities with Tiger: see "Only use Mac OS X 10.4-compatible disk utilities with Mac OS X 10.4 volumes."
    Good luck!

  • Kernel Panic when boot MacBook Pro (related to ACPI driver)

    Hi,
since the first day that I received my MacBook Pro I have a kernel panic sometimes (not always). When it occurs i have to hard reset the computer, and normally it comes another kernel panic (a second). Finally, in the third boot, it boots and all is ok, the system goes very well.
I only see one reference to this problem, a flickr photo at http://www.flickr.com/photos/christophermar/108747167/

Well, finally I phoned Apple to change for new
MacBook Pro (less than 14 days).
I hope that new MacBook don't have this problem
because I fall in love with this "laptop"
Glad you are getting this taken care, and also glad I'm not the only one with this problem. I had kernel panics with my MBP, so I sent it back to amazon for a refund. It was my only real problem with the machine, though, which I loved otherwise. But kernel panics are a serious defect.

I'm getting kernel panics each day as I shut down, the message of restarting by holding down the power button appears on the screen - it began about a month ago and. Do you have any ideas of how to solve the problem? I've copied the logs that I found for each kernel panic that still have the message logged. Please help if you can, I have read some of the other comments and perhaps it has something to do with my anti-virus software being on at start up. I have copied the log here. Any advice will be welcome.

    Two experiments you can try.
    1.  Boot in safe mode and see if you can shut down normally.  All thise additions won't be running in safe mode so this test would indicate it is one of them causing the problem.
    2. Uninstall all the intego VirusBarrier stuff.  That's my first guess and the troublemaker.

  • Mac Pro Freeze constantly - no kernel panic, no crash reports. Any ideas?

    Dear all,
My good ol' Mac Pro (4.1-2009) which has been utterly reliable for years is now driving me cazy.
It freezes from time to time (let's say twice a day but sometimes not at all for 2 days in a row) - only possible option is hard reboot.
The screen just freezes, no kernel panic, no crash reports.
It has started after a ram replacement but then reverting to the original settings didn't change anything.
Tried all what possible: reverting to original ram (the Apple one), clean install on a new hard drive (10.8.4), replacing graphic card (4870 to 5770), Zap PRAM, resetting SMC, safe mode, clean new account, booting only with keyboard and mouse, Techtool Pro hardware tests-all passed (but not AHT as I can't find the original DVDs anymore), smc fan control, voodoo.
Some apps seem more enthusiastic at crashing than others especially Cinema 4D (when rendering), World of Warcraft (when playing), Photoshop CC (in OGL mode) but sometimes just dropping down a menu causes a freeze.
My eyes are full of tears.
Any idea? Someone had a similar experience?
    I might start drinking.
    Thanks.
    Mac pro 4.1 - 2009 - 2x2.26 quad xeon.
OS X 10.8.4 on a brand new hard drive.
    Ram 24 Gb (4/4/4/- 4/4/4/-)
    ATI 5770

Got a freeze but this time I also got a report! For some reason it makes me happy.
as I said, starting with just the keyboard and the mouse is enough to make this ****' machine freeze.

  • ASUS PCE-N53 Kernel Panic

    Hello there.
I just bought a PCIe wireless network card for my x86_64 AMD Arch Linux box.
It uses Ralink drivers that are supplied from the CD that companied the card, but are also to be found on ASUS' website
According to the aforementioned webpage, the driver only support 2.6. That may very well be, because I tried to build it without too much of luck. That is, building it seems to go rather fine. The compilation succeeds and the network card works like a charm for a few minutes, I am able to connect to the Internet and all that before I get kernel panic with the error: Fatal exception in interrupt. Also, when I do a ifconfig, it says under ra0: "device interrupt 47". Not completely sure what this has to say about my problem, though.
I am willing to share any log, information, error and debug line that can help to find the root of this problem. I hope we will find a solution to this, because it is a neat and cheap card that has worked very well for me under Windows, at least compared to my D-Link USB adapter.
    Thank you.

    I tried building against a vanilla linux-3.8.3 and got the following errors;

  • I have a mid 2014 13' retina display MacBook Pro that went into kernel panic twice, the trackpad froze, and after the second kernel panic it will not turn on. This is a two month old laptop with no history of problems. Any ideas?

I purchased it in December and three days ago it kernel panicked twice. After the second event, it will not boot at all. The charge cord is green when it's plugged in and seems to indicate the battery is fine. When it went into kernel panic, the trackpad locked up. I had a technician open it up to see if there were any obvious issues and everything looked ok visually. I can't boot it into safe mode or anything involving powering the machine on, as it is not responding to anything. I have a major test coming up in five days that I am taking on this laptop and am desperate for answers. Any information you can offer at all would be helpful.

    Try SMC and NVRAM resets:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063
Then try a safe boot again:

    Ciao.

  • IMac kernel panic -- rule out hardware and software! any ideas?

    Greetings forum
I am totally at a loss on what to do next. Im writing about a mid 2010 27 inch iMac recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. Shortly after this the computer started to experience issues of rebooting itself as clicking apps such as safari. So began the troubleshooting process!
First tried clean install -- ie format HD and internet recover install
everything installed fine and then restart issue again as it experience kernel panic
ruling out the Software I was convinced it was a memory hardware issue so I booked appt at genius bar and took it in-- the computer was there for 4 days and the tech said they did extensive testing and could find nothing wrong with the hardware tests!! and they had no advice other than to try a fresh install (again)
I took it home and let it sit for a couple of months as I didnt want to bother with it right away
So I pulled it out again yesterday and decided to do a fresh install after format -- again within 5 min in kernel panicd! This time i think I was searching in safari. BELOW is the crash report
I also decided to load up the diagnostic tool off my iMac disk to test hardware (did the extended test TWICE) and NO TROUBLE FOUND (see photo)

Hmmmm, what all is connected at home that wasn't at the Apple Store?
Does it ever crash when not using Safari or Internet?
Can you test your AC power?

  • MBP Kernel Panics, log posted, ideas?

MBP kernel panics and panic log
I received a MBP at the end of march, build week 10, 2.0 GHz, 2 GB of kensington memory added. I have been getting occasional kernel panics (screen greys, computer asks for restart), mostly while running itunes through an airport express/extreme network to my home stereo. Sunday, I ran apple hardware test in looping mode for 4 hours, no indicated problem. Then, I ran Memtest in single user mode for 3 hours, with no indicated problem. No noise problems that my 51 year old ears can hear, no automatic restarts, but the computer does get much hotter than my old trusty 1 GHz Ti PB.
Below is the panic log. Any of experts around here have suggestions? Hate to send in the 'puter if I don't have to.
    thanks,
    Jack

I had issues with my previous PowerBook G4. It would all the suddent get very hot. I suspected that something was not right with the CPU cooling. I opened up the PowerBook and found one of the screws that would hold the cooling assembly down loose. after tightening that screw the temperatures returned to normal...
I can imagine that your MBP has something similar going on as well. Or maybe your environment is hotter that mine here. I work at a pretty well air conditioned place, so my laptops always run very cool here.

  • Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

OK, a new issue that I can't resolve...
Having made my new kernel without any hiccups, I then installed it by using pacman -A kernel2.6.12.pkg.tar.gz. However, on boot-up it only gets so far, then gives me an error:
<0>Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
I've looked around on the 'net, and it seems this usually occurs when there's some problem with the hardware. However, I've used the config file from the 2.6.10 kernel I'm currently in as I type, so there shouldn't be any problems support-wise :?
    What could be wrong?
My fstab and config for the 2.6.12 kernel are below (I've included the fstab so you can see I've got support for my filesystems compiled into the kernel):

Arch is running on an Athlon-XP 3000+, with an Audigy 2 Value sound card, ASUS NF7 mobo (nforce2), 2 IDE hdds, 1 SATA hdd, a floppy drive, 3com Boomerang ethernet PCI card, and an ATI Radeon 9800SE.
I thought that I might have enabled both APM and APCI in the kernel by accident, but that's not the case
I know, as I've mentioned earlier in the thread, that there's an issue with the emu10k1 drivers used by my audigy in this kernel, but I've compiled that as a module under ALSA, and I assume it wouldn't have an extreme effect like this even if it were statically compiled.
    Any ideas???

Problem was resolved by self; I recompiled the kernel, again using ABS... I think I may have not incorporated an I/O Scheduler into the kernel, lol. Cheers anyway.
