At end of tether, dial up was more reliable!

On Jan 4th my broadband completely died. I reported it and was told that "hopefully the problem would be fixed by Monday 9th.
On Sunday 8th an engineer arrived and spent the whole day sorting out my line................
end result was that he replaced about 20ft of cable from a junction box in my garage to the main socket and told me all was well.
After engineer had left I tried but could not get onto net, my hub (HOMEHUB 2) kept dropping out and was really slow, so much so that I was having to wait 10/15 seconds for a low res Youtube clip to buffer, bearing in mind that prior to Jan 4th we were watching BBC iplayer in HD with no problems.
Yesterday, Monday, I called to report slow speed and was told that it would take a while for the signal to get through due to the new cable.
This morning I carried out a speed test and my result was even slower that on Sunday afternoon.
I called again and was told more works were being carried out and would be completed shortly. An engineer (someone I know,) called within 40 minutes to say that ALL works were now complete and my landline should now be perfect as he had fixed a problem at the exchange.
Carried out speed test........... no change!
Phoned again and was told to hang up so that a line check could be carried out........ an engineer called within 10 minutes and told me that line was nigh on perfect. Carried out speedcheck........... no change!
Called again.
This time I was told that scheduled works were being carried out at exchange, I tried to explain that I'd spoken to an engineer not 20 minutes before who had told me my line was good only to be told that the works were onging and would be completed by midnight. I was told to unplug my hub and not reconnect until after midnight.
It's now after midnight, I've reconnected my hub and carried out a speedcheck, guess what.................. no change!
As of now I have spent over 4 hours either on hold or speaking to someone who thinks I'm an idiot. I have changed filters, I have disconnected and reconnected many times and no change so I've had a gutfull!
This evening I asked my next door neighbour (a good mate,) to carry out a speedcheck on his broadband, here's his result..........
Tonight I carried out a speedtest, here's my result..............
Here's the details from my hub. Please bear in mind that my connection time is so low because the helpteam told me to completely unplug my hub.
We are both with BT, we are both on Option 3 20Mb broadband, we are both fed from the same box on the same telegraph pole, and presumably the same exchange so why is he receiving 4 times the download speed that I'm getting, but more to the point why oh why am I being fobbed off each time I speak to the BT Broadband helpline?
I really am getting annoyed, someone please help.

Just caried out the quiet line test on a cordless phone (it's all I've got,) and complete silence, good sign?
Over the last few days BT have told me that they have found myriad problems with my line however as of yesterday I was assured that ALL line problems were now solved, and to be honest my phone is now crystal whereas before there was a slight crackle heard during phone calls.
I fully understand that things can, and often do, go wrong but I just hate it when you know that the person on the the other end of the line is feeding you b******t and hasn't got a clue what they're going on about!
This is my 3rd year on option 3 with the 20mb and up until it went daft I was getting between 5 and 6mb download which was fine, although I'mstill puzzled as to how next door can get 12mb???
By the way I've carried out my tests on both master (I only have one socket,) and test sockets with no difference in speed.
As for "bell wire on terminal 3," sorry you've lost me, I am but a simple plumber (relying heavily on my internet to update site, receive emails etc.)
I have 4 copper wires coming into my socket, orange and white are connected the other 2 are cut short and not conected.

  • Why was the wheel reinvented, when older wheel was more reliable???

    Apple, answer me this..
After the foundation of iMovie & iDVD 4 and 5,
a very reliable and sturdy basis for DVD and movie creation
(at least for me anyway)...why did you mess with a good thing?
All the problems I've read in the forums combined with the
problems I've had with iDVD 6 (and some with iMovie 6)...
what happened? what went wrong?...and why mess with a good thing?
Now with iMovie HD, I cannot re-install my iMovie and iDVD
and go back to version 5.
    sincerely,
    very frustrated!!

First off...I want to thank you both Skip & Mish for your time and patience in attempting to solve the problem and I will try to lay out what's happening and my particular situation. Good luck.
I'm an Art Director/Print Designer of some 13 years and have within the last 2+ years, have dove head-first into video editing (Premiere, etc) and DVD creation. So that's where I am at, in a designer mindset and knowing all the Mac programs that entails.
Not knowing how to use iMovie/iDVD programs some 1+ years ago, now being able to make high-quality DVD productions are now something I take pride in.
Having sucess with mostly version iMovie5/iDVD5, and some v4, I comitted a cardinal sin of the "computer programs law #1"..never buy/install a new program when it comes out due to "bugs." But with the sucess i've had with 4 & 5, what could go wrong...so I went with it and purchased iLife 6.
What a mistake...and you're right Mish, there are bugs in any program, especially non-essential ones, but these were crutial and created havoc, something that I wasn't accustomed to in previous versions.
So here's the problem, I had created movies in 5 and eagerly installed 6. I don't quite remember exactly what the bug was but it had to do with iDVD6 dropping assests as it's brought into it as encoded by iMovie6 when I burned the DVD. I could not proceed with the project. (I am tempted to reinstall 6 to recreate the bug so I can detail what's going on.)
Anyway, so like any other Mac guy i thought, i'll delete all programs of iMovie/iDVD6 and reinstall 5. Well, i was able to install iDVD 5 however, iMovie 5 was "grayed-out"
as an option on both install discs of 5. I couldn't reinstall iMovie 5.
Getting discouraged, I installed iMovie 6 and prayed that it would "share" with iDVD5 menus already created. It didn't share... thus, I had to follow Skip's suggestion to Export w/ a Full Quality movie and re-link, however it didn't transfer encoded chapter markers into iDVD5.
What it did was every chapter that was already created in iDVD would now play the entire movie from the beginning.
Now i'm thinking that I have to somehow relink chapter stops...a bit much work for what iMovie/iDVD makes so easy.
I now have two versions of my movie, saved one in 5 & one in 6...would like to continue with 6 version but burn DVD's in 5 as it's more stable. iMovie won't share/transfer at all...only opening the program but not creating a new project in iDVD.
So there I am...the project is on hold until I figure this out and where i can continue to focus on the "design & form" and not the technical function, which Apple had built-in as being "so easy."
Now you can see why i am so frustrated and need a solution that doesn't require an 8 hour day. Do I bother continuing with 6 for future projects?
Speaking of 8 hours, this post needs an end.
How do we solve the problem? Suggestions & Options please..
    Gratefully in your debt, thanks!!

Hello this is happening to us also (minus the Bluetooth speaker).  We can't figure out what is causing the data usage.  I turned off mobile data as soon s I activated the device, and got the message that unless I am connected to WiFi.....(that is exactly what I wanted). We watched Netflix for about three hours, then the alerts started.  Like you we have many devices connected and never used over 2GB now all of a sudden we have used it in a matter of hours.  My husband called Verizon  and got the usual doubting Thomas response.  I understand that they don't know my device settings.  So over the phone we check all the settings and turned  off every possible culprit eating up the data and end the call.  By now I have purchased another gig for the month!  Assured we are NOT using mobile data, we continue on the IE path to bliss.  HA!  A few hours later I check the mobile data usage on the Verizon website and that darn thing is still using data.  After two more phone calls and two VERY uneventful trips to the local store we were told to take out the sim card.  This has stopped the data usage, but it defeats the purpose of having the data plan.  I could have just stuck with my Surface.  Verizon sent us a new sim card.  Its been installed and I have set my homepage to Verizon mobile data usage (just kidding) but I am on that site a lot.   I am surprised at the number of complaints about this device.  When we called the Verizon support acted as though this was the first time they had heard about this.   Loved your post, you should write for a living.

Spotlight lists items and shows preview images.  BUT what about showing the path/location address of an item in my computer.
Especially important if I've put the item in the wrong folder and what to locate it without multi-steps. iMac OS X 10.5 was more useful.
Old OSX Spotlight function automatically displayed path/location within the machine:  e.g. desktop/folder/sub-folder/item.
Can I make Spotlight show the path?

Press option-command and the path is displayed at the bottom of the little preview window.  Press command-return and the enclosing folder opens.

    hi Ernesto,
As the problem you are facing is a dial out issue on MPE,  go
through the checklist mentioned below in order to confirm the configuration
    is intact.
    Here is the checklist :
    1.    Ensure that H323 GW is defined on CCM/CUCM.
    Device > Gateway > find.
Look for a device name that equals either MPE's hostname, FQDN, or IP
    Address.
    2.    Ensure that h323 Gateways are configured on MPE.
MPE Administration Center > System Configuration > Call Configuration > H323
    Configuration
    Ensure that h323 is enabled.
Ensure that you have entered your CCM's IPs in h323 Gateway 1, 2
    3.    Ensure that CCM's interface with MPE is up.
Ensure that MPE's IP Address is listed under the "IP Address" column.
Ensure that this IP Address is that of the FIRST NIC on MPE, not the second.
    4.    Verify that MPE has the CSS required to call the destination.
    FIRST, FIND MPE's CSS:
When MPE places a call, the CSS in question is Device > Gateway > MPE-GW >
    Inbound
THEN the relevant config is under Device > "Call Routing Information -
Inbound Calls" > Calling Search Space
    SECOND, FIND DESTINATION PATTERN's PARTITION:
If the destination is an IP Phone within the CCM/CUCM Cluster, then the
relevant config is under Device > Phone > click on Directory Number in CCM.
If the destination is a PSTN endpoint/phone, then the relevant config is
    under Device > Route Pattern.
    5.    Ensure that your user profile is set to allow outdials.
MPE Administration Center > User Configuration > User Profile Management >
Your User Profile > Can call out of meetings should be set to "Yes".
    6.    When you place a call from  from the CLI, the system applies permissions
from the "Guest" User profile since mpxadmin  or root are not Users within
the MPX application. To allow this to work, you need to  verify two
    settings:
MPE Administration Center > User Configuration > User Profile Management >
Guest > Can call out of meetings should be set to "Yes".
Ensure that the Guest profile is not in a "locked" state.
MPE Administration Center > System Configuration > Usage Configuration >
Allow Guest outdials should be set to "Yes".
    Hope this helps!
    Thanks,
    Karthik

  • How can I make Tiger more reliable on my iMac G3?

I just installed an 80GB HD in my iMac and installing Tiger on the new HD is just as treacherous as the HD it replaces. I was led to believe that a HD with a lot more free space would make Tiger run more reliably. What tricks can I employ to make Tiger fully install with minimal jibba-jabba from my iMac? Sometimes it will even go so far as to fail at 99.9 % of completion, other times it will install and mysteriously freeze up and then fail to start up again upon reset.

    Hello MrSteve1337!
"2: Where can I buy a decent copy of Panther?"
If Tiger decides that it doesn't really like your Mac, or if you decide that you don't like it on your Mac, if you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
The discs should look like the images in the above links.

  • Intel more reliable than G4 ??

    hi, all
i have an old iMac 233 MHz, still running (except that it never would wake up correctly, otherwise NO problem for 8 years!!) . 20 months ago i bought an iMac G5 20", which developed recently major problems, which are NOT solved after the official apple service exhanged the logic board. 10 days ago, i bought for my daughter an miniMac G4, which now already showed Kernel-Panics. These are things which fall under Apple warranty, and are not the topics of this post here.
    my question is the following:
I need another computer, small type desktop like the mini. Laptop might be a solution as well, but is expensive and less suitable. The past experience with my iMac and the miniMac g4 get me suspicious about the reliability of Aplle.
has anybody some kind of overview on whether the miniMac intel (single processor) are more reliable -- well, i know: how to gauge it? thus
"more reliable than my experience with G4 and G5 machines"?
any response is welcome, and "Thanks in advance"
    Thomas

    Hello,
That is a tough one to answer with certainty since we don't have real numbers to play with. But, from my perspective, the Mac Mini G4 was the most reliable computer Apple has produced since the introduction of the Mini. I've had nothing but good reliable service from mine, and all the other new machines I've purchased since the G4 mini have been sold because they kept breaking down. So, I've repeatedly gone back to my slower mini G4 because of it's reliability.
The Intel Mini seems to have had comparable success to the G4 Mini. It would appear from most reports that the Intel Mini is almost as reliable as the G4 mini. For most accounts, it would seem to be on equal footing. But, there are more graphical anomalies and sound problems that have cropped-up in the Intel versions. These are not necessarily wide-spread problems, but just problems that were not present in the G4 versions.
So, from what I have seen and experienced, I would compare the G4 Minis and Intel Minis as being very much the same in terms of reliability. I would add that the Intel Mini has had problems that the G4 Mini has not had. But, that does not appear to be a significant number of units. So, they are probably very comparable.
Whether this helps or not, I don't know. But, I hope it does help you to some degree.
Let us know if you have other questions.

  • Why 3g slower but more reliable than WiFi

    Hi all,
I did a ton of testing on WiFi and 3g yesterday on my 32gig 3gs. The best I could get out of WiFi at my house was just about 11 Mbps down and 5 up. The best on 3g I've seen was just approaching 1 Mbps up and down. So I think WiFi should get my downloads about 10 times as fast and hopefully more reliable, but it doesn't seem to be the case. WiFi will load what seems to be just as slow as 3g but if I try to skip foreward on a video or something it will glitch out or just stop loading. But with 3g I can skip foreward and it will catch up to where I want to be and continue the video.
I guess that's not really a question but I want to see if anyone else agrees or knows a possible fix.

My wifi is far faster and more consistent then 3g too. On my home wifi (also in an apartment) I think I'm using channel 9, and I also have my wireless router set to 802.11g-only (for my iPhone, printer, and two computers all connected via wifi).
If you are getting starts and stops and such, also check for placement and possible interferance. If you have cordless telephones, are they DECT, 5Ghz or what? Is your wifi router placed up high, or near the floor (higher will usually give better signal). Is it near a stereo, television, microwave, house fan, air purifier, or other device that may cause interference? Are you usually in a place where there is a wall (or two) between you and the router (and if so, are they bare walls, or are there nice big metal appliances up against them)?
There are all sorts of things that can mess up a wifi signal - in most home's, I'm amazed it works at all! Just kidding, but there are a number of things you can check out to be sure you are getting the best, most robust signal possible.

  • Is the current MacBook more reliable running Windows than a MacBook Pro?

I have a newish Santa Rosa/Penryn based MacBook Pro. Unfortunately, I have to run some apps under Windows and am running XP most of the time. However, the MacBook Pro has proven to be a poor choice for this. I get a Windows Blue Screens of Death on a frequent basis (more frequent than I ever seen on any non-Apple notebook). Burning DVDs take almost 30 minutes now (it used to take 10 minutes). The wifi drops constantly. Audio glitches most of the time. It is really frustrating and has only gotten worse with time and updated drivers.
I have a MacBook for work that I run MacOS (and the OS from my employer) on and it seems to work more nicely that my MacBook Pro.
Does the MacBook run Windows XP more reliably that the MacBook Pro?

In this context, I think Kappy was suggesting that "defective" meant that your
XP had either not installed correctly or the installation had become corrupted.
I know it's a complete pain and would waste at least a day, but I'd be tempted
to reformat the Boot Camp partition and try installing again from the Win XP CD.
The BSOD issue with the MBP has been present since early on and reported by others as well. The problem is with the Apple supplied driver(s). (I have run diagnostic tools that point to the wifi driver being part of the problem, but not the entire problem. I suspect that there might also be an issue with the touchpad driver, but I haven't run any tests to verify that.) I just don't get the sense that Apple has much motivation to fix the problem(s). The nature of the BSOD problem (as reported by the BSOD) is something that could lead to the other problems that I have observed.
I have had my MBP for a few months with no sign from Apple that the issue is being addressed. The MBP is a great machine, but unless someone ports all of the apps that I need to MacOS X, I need to run Windows better than it does.
So, any more reports on how well XP runs on a MacBook?

  • USB Disk via USB Hub or Ethernet NAS Connection More Reliable?

This is a rather techical question that calls for an opinion.
I want to centralize backups for my daughter, wife and myself.  I'm going to add the latest model Airport Extreme Base Station as both an internet access point (from my cable modem) and as a wireless router to hard drive storage.  I know there are cheaper (and probably faster) wireless routers; however, I've used various models of airport base stations over the years with my cable modem and they have all worked flawlessly and never need rebooting.
My two choices:  1) Connect a 4-port, powered USB hub to the usb connection on the Airport Extreme and use a pair of 3GB hard drives--one for primary backup and the second for the backup of the backup.  2) Use a QNAP TS110 or TS112 NAS device and connect it to the Base Station via gigabit ethernet.  Then, an external USB drive would be connected to the QNAP NAS device.  I've encountered QNAP NAS products in my work life and have been incredibly impressed with them--reliable, very low power requirements, reasonably easy setup via Web browser.
Choice 1 will be about $125 less expensive than Choice 2.  I'll have to use the Linux Ext3 or 4 partition map for both drives under Choice 2 but the external USB volume can be formatted in Mac HFS+.  Choice 2 will be theoretically faster because of the gigabit ethernet connection (probably irrelevant because of the slow wireless n throughput) but the QNAP device can be set to do automated backups to the USB drive that would be connected to it.  That's nice.
My question:  Based on what I've read over the years about connecting USB disks to an Airport Extreme base station, I have the opinion that an ethernet connection to an NAS device may be more reliable (ie, the client computers don't drop the connection to the hard drive as often).  Maybe I'm wrong about that.  I would like an opinion.
Also, I know how slow the real throughput will be as a result of clients connecting via wireless n.  In real life, with decent quality connections, I'll be looking at 10MB to 12MB per second max.  The first backups will take days; however, subsequent incremental backups will be much faster.  I don't plan to use Time Machine, but rather to use Carbon Copy Cloner to make backups to read/write sparse disk image bundles (CCC won't do regular backups to networked drives).  I tried Time Machine a while back but would rather have access to actual files as as a complete disk image that would be bootable when written back to a drive.  Call me old-fashioned, but that's me.  I also have two other bootable backups on 2.5" external drives--one that stays with me and another is always at my work place.  Also, I'm not interested in a Time Capsule because I don't think their reliability is all that great (bad design with too much heat buildup).
Thanks for any insights you can offer.

I meant to say 3TB drives, not 3GB.

Which is a better system/performance for the money? Which is better for moderate (2013 and earlier) gaming, video editing, XP mode, etc?
Is the performance upgrade of the w541 over the t540p worth the money upgrade?
Which will hold out better for 5-10 years? No CAD usage foreseen.  Would 32GB be necessary for the w541, or would 16GB be enough?
The camera is something I would gladly do without; its presence is a drawback. Same for fingerprint reader.
    Thanks.
    (Edited to add)
PS: If the t540p is the way to go, does it make sense, for a $55.00 price increase, to upgrade from a i5-4330m to an i7-4700mq? At that point, is the graphics card (Nvidia GT 730m) bottlenecking the processor, game, etc. so much that the CPU upgrade is a waste of money?

I have the T540p with the i7-4700. It is a strong machine and a CPU upgrade to the 4700 is worth the $50. A 4700 will perform the same in either laptop.
Grqphics cards are always the bottle neck. The GT730M can't do much so if graphics are a concern it's the W541. The W541 also has the new touch pad & thunderbolt, a bigger power supply and more of a workstation feel. That is attractive to me, but, if all you plan to do is spreadsheets and surf the T540p will go right through it.
If it didn't break the budget I would do the W541 with the i7-4810 cpu and the K2100M. I would complain about the price but I think I'd be happier with that config over the next three years.
Sixteen gig of memory should be good & focus on a fast boot drive.
If you call in the order they may give a $50 discount, if you ask.

  • Which E-business suite Administration side more reliable ?

    Hi All ,
Auto-configuration tool , billing and customer contact (in the telecom space), stock management (retail segment) and an executive dashboard that can summarize transactional data already exists
We are Planning R12 re-implementation Solutions for – Pharma, EPC, Manufacturing, Financials, Leasing, Retail industries.
Can anyone tell me which solution (ASM/RAC/Clustering/Clouds and accelerations) on administration side looks more reliable and user-friendly in future.
    Regards,

    Hi,
    1)ASM is must for RAC
Oracle recommends ASM for 10g RAC deployments, although CRS files cannot be stored on ASM. In fact, RAC installations using Oracle Database Standard Edition must use ASM.
Pros: File-level striping and mirroring; ease of manageability through Oracle syntax and OEM.
Cons: ASM files can only be managed through an Oracle application such as RMAN. This can be a weakness if you prefer third-party backup software or simple backup scripts. Cannot store CRS files or database software.
2)what do you mean by cloud?public cloud?
3)You can use acclerators if the client ur implementing is comfortable with it.
Use RAC if its is 24X7(high availibility) with ASM...acclerators are good for implementing projects fast..there is no relation betweeen RAC and Accelerators
    Regards
