ATI X1900 exhibits random display glitches on a Mac Pro

My ATI card has been displaying bizarre and random glitches on my Mac Pro. I am running a dual screen setup: a brand new Samsung SyncMaster 21" lcd and an ancient 15" Apple Studio Display.
On the Samsung, the most common problem I get is what looks like video jitter (the entire image shakes to the right very quickly at random intervals) every couple of seconds. When the problem gets really bad, I start to notice thin horizontal red lines flickering at random places across the entire screen. Both happen while using the computer and during the boot/reboot process... on the old Apple screen, the problem is less noticeable, usually it's just a very quick flash on the screen that can happen every 15 minutes or so. Sometimes a restart clears up the problem but it doesn't always work. I have also tested my machine with a 17" Formac LCD and it displays the red lines as well.
Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a consistent pattern of why this is happening... sometimes it starts only after several hours of use, other times it will start after waking from sleep. Zapping PRAM and resetting the PMU doesn't seem to have any effect.I have put the stock nVidia card in the machine and all the problems go away. This card was actually replaced by Apple last week and things were fine for a few hours but then the problems returned and has gotten worse since then.
Does this sound like the video card is still defective, or could it possibly be the Mac Pro itself?

Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I would get back into contact with AppleCare and see what they can do. It might well be a driver issue so if you have a drive available, try installing a clean copy of Max OS X onto it, update it to Mac OS X 10.4.8 and see it if makes a difference.

  • 24" Cinema Display (LED) with 2008 Mac Pro

My 23" Cinema Display monitor is beginning to show signs of aging, having been used with two Mac Pros and a G5. I'd like to upgrade the monitor to a 24" LED Cinema Display, but the 2008 Mac Pro doesn't have the mini-DVI port. Is there any upgrade path here? The new (unavailable) ATI Radeon card?, mini-DVI to DVI adapter (monitor to computer)? I can't believe Apple would leave recent Mac Pro owners with no path to upgrade the monitor (save for the overpriced 30" non-LED monitor).

The nVidia card says it is specifically for the 2009 Mac Pro, while the ATI says it is for the early 2008 or the early 2009. The hard to get ATI appears to be the only card available for the 2008 that has the mini-DVI plug. I'd love to be able to get the less expensive card, but the early 2009 uses different memory than the early 2008.
The cards have been used successfully in Mac Pros older than thiose listed by Apple

"If you didn't buy a new 2009 Mac Pro but want to use the new graphics cards released with the Nehalem Mac Pros, you can buy the GeForce 120 GT and Radeon HD 4870 in kit form from Apple. They both worked in our 2008 Harpertown 3.20GHz Mac Pro as you can see from the graphs above. We also got the Radeon HD 4870 to run in the 2007 Clovertown first generation Mac Pro. A close colleague has one working in the 2006 Woodcrest first generation Mac Pro."

This report says the Radeon HD 4870 Mini DisplayPort didn't work in the older Mac Pros, but hat may be fixed when 10.5.7 appears.

    The 30" display needs a DUAL-LINK adapter.

Yes, it supports target display mode. Windows can be run with either Parallels or Boot Camp.

  • Reviews for ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro?

There's no review at the Apple Store on this [ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (Early 2009 or Early 2008)|http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB999ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=NDE4NDMx OA]. Googled and found nothing related to the Mac kit. Mostly PC based.
Should I consider this card? I need a spare/replacement graphics card for my Mac Pro (early 2008). The NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT card has failed me twice.

    Just came out on barefeats:
    http://www.barefeats.com/nehal14.html
Shows new drivers with 285, also compares 4870.
If you play a lot of games on the windows side, you might also want to consider the 4890. I has recently became flashable (if you're into that kinda thing). It has a lot more leeway to be overclocked. Close to (or if your lucky) hitting the 1 Ghz core clock speed, gives very close comp to the 285, and at fraction of the price. You can get an XFX 4890 on newegg for $195.

No. Target Display mode is only supported when connected to a Mac running 10.6 or later.
It cannot be used with a PC, bootcamp, gamaing console, cable box, DVR or PowerPC Mac.

  • 23" Apple Cinema HD Display with a new Mac Pro

I just replaced my old G5 Power Mac with a new Mac Pro. The old 23" Cinema HD monitor does not have the same connectors.
Apple no longer makes the ADC-DVI adaptor that I need.
    Any solutions? Thank you.

eBay search in Computers and Networking for: ADC DVI -(ATI, card, GeForce, Radeon, NVidia, Belkin)
Remember that a simple adapter will not supply the needed POWER to run the display. Other brands will work if they supply the power as well as adapt.

  • Display does not work mac pro

I tried connected 4 27" LG 1080p monitors to the mac pro (Late 2013), only two come on at a time no matter what ports i use. All the monitors have come on at least once but not all at the same time. Is there something I need to do? Also under system report it shows both graphic cards but the displays only show up on one card regardless of port. any ideas?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • 2010 iMac target display mode with 2013 Mac Pro

I have a 2010 27-inch iMac that I want to use with target display mode for a 2013 Mac Pro. I have a mini display port to mini display port cable connecting them. When I plug the cable in the iMac screen goes black, but eventually reverts back to iMac desktop. Pressing Cmd-F2 makes it go black again, but eventually reverts back. I was under the impression that this was the correct cable to use to connect, but it doesn't seem to work. Anyone have ideas for what to do? What am I missing? Thanks!

You can use the cheaper single link adapter
    <http://store.apple.com/product/MB570Z/B/mini-displayport-to-dvi-adapter>
if you don't have more than two DVI or HDMI displays.
    <http://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT202801>
If you will be using more, you can still use a single link adapter, but it must be ACTIVE, such as

  • Display Problem with my Mac Pro and LG Flatron Wide Monitor in Mountain Lion

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, my Mac Pro has display problems with my LG Flatron display.  The image is displayed with a black bar on the right and on the bottom.  And the left side of the content is not visible.  I tried every resolution available in the Display System Preferences, they are different in terms of how big the black bars are, and what part is not visible, but none of them are correct.  I held down the option key to try to detect displays or switch to resolutions that are not normally available.  When I restart the image is lined up with the display, but if the display ever goes to sleep or gets turned off, the image reverts to being off center, and the only way I can get it back is to restart...  The interesting thing is that this monitor works fine with the same machine if I reboot using BootCamp into Windows 7.  The Monitor also works fine, connecting the same connector to a Mac Mini, although that mac mini is running 10.6 and not Mountain Lion.  I've reset the SMC and restarted countless times, I don't see any other levers to pull or things to try...

That card is for a PC it may not give you Startup and Option-Boot screens.
The 7950 "Mac Edition" card has a very distinctive look:

  • I purchased the display version of my mac pro and it had the Pages app.  I just reset it to factory settings and the app is no longer on it.  Is there a way I can get it back for free?

I purchased the display version of my Macbook Pro at a navy exchange.  The woman working at the store did not know how to reset to factory so I took it home as was.  I have been using it for about a month and the laptop had Pages and Keynote on it already.  I just reset to factory settings and it now has neither.  Is there a way to get these back for free?  I think my computer purchase makes it eligible to have these apps for free but since I reset it they are gone.

Go to the App Store where you can purchase copies of the apps. You cannot get them for free. The ones installed belonged to the previous owner. You will need to purchase using your Apple ID.

  • Help! Multiple Displays not Working. (Mac Pro late 2013).

    Hardware:
    Late 2013 Mac Pro
Processor: 3.7 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon E5
Memory: 12 GB 1867 MHz DDR ECC
    Graphics: AMD FirePro D300 2048 M8
    Software: OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)
    Displays:
    4 LG Electronics S-Class 25UM64-S 25-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor's
    Display Connection:
6 Moshi Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (4K)
    Issue:
First of all, thank you in advance for taking the time to help!
I just picked up this Mac Pro (as stated above) and I am having quite the time trying to get the monitors to display properly (or at all!)!
Everything is hooked up properly (i'd like to think so), i've run through most of the trouble shooting methods I can think of and have found online... and still, 2 of the 4 displays do not show! The Mac Pro is not recognizing two of them.
I was told that the MacPro could recognize up to 6 Mini DisplayPort to HDMI monitors, however, only 2 are working properly. Is it because of the Moshi Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters? Should I be running MDP to DP cables instead? The monitors support DisplayPort input's, however, they also allow for PIP hence the use of 6 MDP adapters to HDMI. (2 of the monitors are using the built in picture in picture split screen. So 2 HDMI inputs each).
Really pulling my hair on this one.. I figured it would be plug and play.. at least, that's how apple USED to be.
Any ideas?! Am I simply needing to use the MDP to DP cables instead of MDP to HDMI? Please help!
    Thank you!

    See:
Mac Pro (Late 2013): Using multiple displays - Apple Support
Can I connect more than 2 DVI or HDMI displays?
Mac Pro supports a total of two DVI or HDMI displays when connected via the built-in HDMI port or using the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. To connect additional DVI displays, use an active DVI adaptersuch as the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter. You can connect up to six active adapter DVI displays. This requires a powered USB hub since Mac Pro offers four USB ports and you will need six to connect them all.
Thus, use a display port to mini display port cable
