    Hi.
The scenario will be - "Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod or "Firmware update failure" error when updating or restoring iPod..
In this case we need to try all the steps mentioned in the Apple article number - 301267..
    The link is http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301267..
I will list out thr steps for convenience...
    1. Plug the iPod directly to the USB removing all other devices connected..
    2. Open "My computer" -> Right click on removable drive meant for IPod and select format 32..
    3. Then Restore the IPod back to factory settings..
    4. Then unp[lug the IPOd, Reset it and then try transferring songs onto iPod
    Please revert back on clarifications..

I had the same problem. And to think I actually HESITATED at installing the update. Oh wait... this happened AFTER the update. Funny how often that happens, eh? But I digress...
Anyway, I had two errors- initially the iPod stated my music library was somewhere else, and did I want to sync to that library. When I said yes, it reverted then to the "attempting to copy to disk"error. Further, iTunes showed that my iPod on the iTunes was EMPTY. However, my actual iPod hadn't lost any data. Confused yet? So am I.
*Last ditch effort- I went back in, and updated all my permissions, did a permission repair and then a permission verify.
    * Also did a disk verify on the iPod to make sure it wasn't sick.
*I also drug a new song into my library.
*Changed from the USB plugin to the firewire. (Although I did this earlier in the day, and hadn't seen a noticeble change)
    * Opened the bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. (should have done that a few hours ago)
When my first pop up asked about did I want to sync to the mystery persons library, I said yes. (At the worst, I have all my music and could reimport all 30G of it, if necessary.) And immediately, the sync began, and began appropriately. However, it IS re-syncing every single song I had on the iPod to begin with.
I suspect something nasty happened in the iTunes update, ever since the intel thing happened, the updates have been a bit sketchy. I really like Apple products, but I've gone through 3 iPods due to software meltdowns, and it's a bit frustrating.
    Good luck!

  • Attempting to copy to the disk failed. The disk could not be read from or written to", and "itunes could not copy to the ipod because the file could not be read or written" WTH?

I recently bought my son who is special needs an iPod shuffle gen 4 and nothing but complications.  I kept getting error message saying it could not be read from or written to.  Then it would not even charge up.  I let ig charge on computer for 6 hours it turned green.  Then I went to check it out and it went to orange then nothing.  So, I took it back to the storea and got another.  I am home excited for my son and nothing it is doing the same thing!  Someone please help me I am ready to swear off iPod period!

I had this issue and couldn't figure out what it was for the life of me. I am running windows 7 and the latest version of itunes. I tried multiple reinstalls of itunes and restores of the ipod. I finally got it fixed by following this guide.

Apparently there was an issue with my .dll files. Hope this helps.

  • How can i fix this for my iPhone4? "attempting to copy to the disk "iPhone" failed because the disk could not be read from or written to. "

i keep gettign this message when trying to drag music in itunes.
attempting to copy to the disk "iPhone" failed because the disk could not be read from or written to.

Can apply to iPhone as well >    'Disk cannot be read from or written to' when syncing iPod or 'Firmware update failure' error when updating or restoring iPod
If you are using a Windows based computer >  iTunes for Windows: Gathering and using iTunes Diagnostics
Ignore:  To repair an iPod disk—Restore the iPod or iPod shuffle using the latest version of iTunes.

  • Solved "Attempting to copy to disk "ipod" failed. Could not be read from or

Finally found a solution that worked for me when getting this error message on an 2nd Gen. iPod Nano.
There is a lot of discussion on this topic with no real answers coming back other than to read this article/topic. So, I wanted to share a solution that worked on mine.
The background: Computer running Windows XP Pro. Up-to-date iTunes and iPod software. I downloaded several CDs into iTunes and synced with no problem. I made a few purchases from iTunes Store and would get to one song that when I tried to sync, the following error message appeared; "Attempting to copy to the disk "ipod" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to." When I deleted the song, then I could sync without receiving the error message, but the purchased song would not be included. I restored my iPod, my iTunes was up-to-date, ran chk dsk, emailed support, searched the forums, followed instructions, re-downloaded the problem song from iTunes Store, BUT as long as that problem song was included, I could not sync without getting the error message.
The solution (this worked in my situation): After doing all of the above and not getting rid of this problem, I set the iPod to manually manage my music and synced the iPod (without the problem song, which was already deleted from iTunes). When I deleted the song from the iTunes library, I would always click the button to keep the song in the files instead of sending it to trash. I then went into the iTunes music folder where my songs were kept and opened the file for the problem song. I dragged the song back into my purchases folder in iTunes. From the purchases folder, I dragged the song over to my iPod in iTunes. Then synced. The problem song synced without any problems and the error message did not appear. Thinking that something was still not right, I went back and clicked on the button to NOT manually manage my music and then re-synced. Same good result. No error message. The problem song sings along just fine now with no more error message.
I haven't tried to download another song just yet, so this may not hold, but at least this worked and resolved this problem song. There may be some other factors through all of the work that I did above in trying to resolve this problem that contributed, but it wasn't until I set the iPod to manually manage the music and brought back in the problem song that the error message disappeared. Hopefully this might help. It worked for me so I'm happy now.

I see you've stumbled upon the catch-all article for this incredibly generic error message. Note the phrasing of it: "DISK cannot be READ FROM or written to." Notice that the error doesn't specifically state that it's the iPod disk that cannot be read or written. I used to get this error all the time when I had my library stored on a remote server. The issue being that my machine couldn't access my songs fast enough to copy them to the iPod w/o timing out, and so the disk, in this case my file server, could not be read from. Since you mentioned previously that you're having some anomalies with your library, I would say concentrate on correcting that, rather than worrying that your iPod is kaput.
    regards,
    -c.

  • I installed new windows 8, ever since then all of my I-pods, which I have 5 different ones from various  years are stating "attempting to copy to the disk, then name of the I-pod failed. The disk could not be read from or written to".

All of my I-pods are stating " attempting to copy to the disk failed. the disk could not be read from or written to. I have 5 different I-pods of various years and all of them are saying  that. I also reset a few and  still the same problem.

  • Moving library to external hard drive and get the error "Copying files failed. The disk could not be read from or written to"

    Hello,
I'm moving my library to an external hard drive.
I've made sure to use the 'Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized' option when pointing to the new library location.
I select 'File'->'Library'->'Organize Library', I select to 'Consolidate Files', click 'OK' and get ther error message "Copying files failed. The disk could not be read from or written to".
I've read elsewhere that there may be a corrupted file that I need to sequester somehow and perhaps add it back however I'm not certain how I can locate that file because the status window doesn't indicate which file it's attempting to transfer when the error appears.
    Any tips?
    Thank you,

    iTunes 10.6.3

    OK I figured it out!
It was a dodgy file....I sorted the file folders by date, and as it turned out within the "compilations" folder there was a CD where only about half the tracks seemed to have been copied over. Could not have identified this simply from the time indicated on the finder folder sort, because there were several CDs copied over in the that same minute.
I went back to the original itunes folder, deleted all the files from that CD in itunes, then also deleted all those files from the original disk and the target disk.
Tried the "consolidate library" again, and it completed nicely. 200megs of music and videos.
Very happy to solve this problem after 3 weeks.

  • Error "COPYING MUSIC FAILED. The disk could not be read from or written to"

After following the procedurest to move the iTunes music, the computer started whirring away, happily copying and consolidating all the song files to the new target folder.
After copying 68gigs of 130gigs perfectly, it stopped dead and the following iTunes error message appeared:
"COPYING MUSIC FAILED. THE DISK COULD NOT BE READ FROM OR WRITTEN TO"
I am copying to an external LaCie 500g hard disk, and the current music file is split between folders on the laptop and folders and a 2nd external LaCie Hard disk. It did not appear to have any problems copying and consolidating files from both locations, until the error message showed up.
    How can I solve this?
I really need to consolidate this music file.

  • Copying Music failed. The disk could not be read from or written to.

I just added a server to my home network. It's called "DELLSEVER" and is networked via TCP/IP on a Windows Network. I can copy files to and from it no problem. I created a shared folder on the server with public read/write access and no password called "Music".
I wanted to move my iTunes music folder (~110GB) to the server's Music folder.
I followed the instruction found on this forum and went into iTunes(6.0.4.2) preferences -> Advenced -> Itunes Music folder location -> clicked Change -> selected the directory from the available list -> clicked ok.
Under "iTunes Music folder location" it now says "\\DELLSERVER\Music\iTunes", and clicked ok to close the preferences.
I then clicked Advanced -> Consolidate Library -> Consolidate.
I then get the error "Copying Music failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
I then tried to manually copy my library from dragging the folded from my PC to the server. That worked fine, but I can't get iTunes to use the server's copy of the music, it keeps going back to my PC's copy.
Please help. I've only got about 30 Meg left on my PC's drive with iTunes and need to relocate my music to the server's drives.
And if it matters, I am Administrator on both my PC and the server.
I also tried de-authorizing my PC just in case. Made no difference.

Thanks Katrina. Mapping the folder to a drive letter allowed iTunes to start copying the music across.
Unfortuntely iTunes didn't notice that I manually copied the files across earlier, so it's overwriting them. I'm about two hours into the transfer with about another hour to go, but it looks like it's going to work.

  • IPod Error Message: "The disk could not be read from or written to."

    Hello!
I was syncing my sister's video iPod (30GB) and this error message pops up "Attempting to copy to the disk. "SARAH'S IPO" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
I have restored it three times already, but once it starts putting the music and files back onto the iPod it pops up with that error message. I have updated to the latest version of iTunes and iPod software available. My OS is Windows XP.
Is this something serious? Will I be able to fix it myself or will I need to send it in to be fixed by Apple? Will that be expensive? We didn’t get the Apple replacement plan. D=
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. ^_^

Okay I went thru that entire list and here's what I got...
    (1) My OS is XP and is running fine.
    (2) I've updated my windows
    (3) I don't know of any software that might be interfering.
    (4) There are no damaged files.
    (5) My Windows hard-drive is not damaged and I've tried restoring my iPod's disk thru iTunes but it still doesn't work.
    (6) I don't have an iPod photo and I can't find the folder to delete the cache if if I did.
    (7) The USB cord is firmly connected into my USB port and my iPod
    (8) My music is on my external hard-drive so I need to keep 3rd-party hardware connected
    (9) I will try another USB cord to see if that works.
Is there anything else that I can do? Can Apple fix this?
    Please let me know.

  • Error when syncing iPod: The disk could not be read from or written to!!

I have an iPod mini which worked fine on my Windows XP.
Recently got Windows Vista and I downloaded iTunes and my put my music in the library.
When I plugged my iPod into the Vista, it said it was syncing all the songs to my iPod.
After about 3 hours, whilst syncing the last song a notice came up saying, 'Attempting to copy to the disk failed. The disk could not be read from or written to.'
I restored my iPod and reinstalled iTunes but the same thing happend.
I decided to plug my iPod back into the Windows XP, where I've had no problems. When I did this and started snycing all the songs, I got the notice come up again.
