Audigy 2 ZS CMSS Quest

I've got an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum CMSS enabled, EAX and all that jazz, yet the simulated surround sound using headphones during games sounds a bit abrupt to me. Say, in Call of Duty 2 with EAX3 enabled, if a plane is flying over my head from left to right, I'll hear it in my left headphone and just cut off and go over to the right. It won't pan over smoothly, so it doesn't sound natural. Same thing if someone is shooting a gun next to me.
Am I missing a setting somewhere? ...or am I just spoiled by the one evening I did have with the X-Fi? Anything I should check for.
My onboard Realtek AC'97 had an HTRF demonstration with a buzzing bee that was really good at positional audio, so I'm figuring I must be doing something wrong with a high-end soundcard not pulling this off.
I'm using the latest BETA drivers from the Creative site, if that means anything.

Have you checked in you?re audio console that you?re speaker settings are correct, ie 2xspeakers, headphones or what it is that ?ou use!! because if you have stereo speakers instead of headphones (if you use headphones), that could make the faulty surround you are experiancing!!?
Hope that helped?

• SB Audigy Value CMSS Successfully Enabled in Vista, if you call it CMSS

I've been trying to enable CMSS (at least hear sound from all of the 4 speakers) for a long time and finally successed but in a very strange way.
Steps written below are spesific to my system (SB Audigy Value, Onboard Realtek ALC 850) but can? work similar way on others i guess. For SB Audigy Value 6 Feb. Vista drivers are installed. U can use old XP drivers as explained in the forum too.
I've been using my onboard audio device (realtek ac97) since I can't enable cmss on SB Audigy Value, so Realtek AC97 audio drivers were installed on my system. You can download Realtek AC97 audio drivers? from
Download and install it (first enable the device from bios if you haven't)
After installing the drivers,
-) Open "Playback Devices/Speakers(Realtek A'97 Audio)/Properties" window and open "Enhancements" tab.
2-)There's a "Speaker Fill" effect there. U can take sound from all speakers if u enable it on Realtek AC97 device. And let's import this to our SB Audigy Value device. I say "Import" because i noticed that?"Enhancements" tab is actually a set of registry entries which points to some features from Realtek device. So,
3-) Open registry editor. Go to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\MMDevices\Audio\Render\
Under the Render key the playback devices are listed as some numbers and letters like,
{50a7cf0-aad0-444c-a56b-ce655444d}
4-) U have to find your own device (realtek speakers) , for instance my device is represented by {50a7cf0-aad0-444c-a56b-ce655444d}.
(This is for Realtek ALC 850 model, may be different for other models?I guess)
5-) Under {50a7cf0-aad0-444c-a56b-ce655444d} key you can see "FxProperties" Key. Rightclick on it and export to a file. Save it as RealtekCMSS.reg for instance.
6-) Then find your SB Audigy Value Speakers device. (ES/LS whatever...)
Mine is {5ecbbccc-eca-446-aa2-a7390cf094f6}.
7-) Rightclick on it and select "Permissions"
Go to Advanced/Owner, and change the owner to administrators.
(Don't forget to select "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects)
8-) On "Permissions for {5ecbbccc-eca-446-aa2-a7390cf094f6}" window select "Administrators"
and select "Full Control" to allow. Then click OK.
9-)Close registry editor and open RealtekCMSS.reg in notepad.
0-) Replace {50a7cf0-aad0-444c-a56b-ce655444d}
????to {5ecbbccc-eca-446-aa2-a7390cf094f6} using replace function.
-)Save the file as SBAudigyCMSS.reg and execute it.
2-)Now go to
"Playback Devices/Speakers(SB Audigy)/Properties" and you'll see "Enhancements" tab.
3-)In "Enhancements" tab enable "Speaker Fill"
Open an mp3 and test your speakers. Other effects work too.
From now on you can disable your AC97 device from bios. But don't uninstall Realtek software.

The previous post is inaccurate:? CMSS includes many modes, which will work depending on the speaker configuration. This means that CMSS set?to ON on 5. speakers is not the same as CMSS on Headphones. The selection is done automatically, depending on your selected speaker configuration. For example CMSS on headphones uses HRTFs to produce the effect, while on multi-speaker systems it simply maps and pans the sound. From my experience, CMSS works?good on headphones, not only for games, but for music as well. It expands the soundfield, where on simple stereo and headphones you normally hear the sound inside your head. My opinion is, that CMSS sounds much better on headphones than on speaker systems.

• :smileysad:!!!Audigy LS CMSS Problems

hi there,
i have a megaworks 550 soundsystem combined with a audigy LS.
Unfortunatly my the 550 has no hardware cmss upmix function. so i used the software option in the eax console! but there is the problem when i turn the option on ( all in all for .mp3) theres a lot of more bass!? the naturalty for which i bought the system is gone....
but its not the only problem because when all 5 speakers are working withe .mp3 due to the upmix function both rear speakers give only frequenz response from 300 to 200 or so ( im not a pro)
but what can i say music can be heared but absolutly no voice!
so i dont know what the problem is
maybe quality is lost for the upmix but so much quality that the function has no reason to exist?
mmh ok i hope you can help me, i want a solution to dri've all 5 speakers with.mp3 without any neg effect on the sound..:smileyvery-happy:
chris

thx to all
yes its a little bit strange with the bass but as you said mostly of the sound comes then from the center
and the freont speakers are at a lower volume but the same sound quality not as the back ones who have ( its the only way i can describe it) reduced quality, which i tested when i pushed the trigger in the eax console at REAR speakers. but i just tested it again and when i watch tv with my tv card it seems that cmss is correctly working ( i mean the quality in the back speakers the anoying bass is still there)
only with mp3 theres the problem with the quality, so i m searching now a programm that "copies" the stereo sound on the back speakers and maybe also at the center ( i read media source?)
Quote: "You can also try playing your music through Mediasource3 and enabling DTS:NEO or whatever is called."
@ i think you have the chance to profit from two cmss functions apart me with my little "ls" i have only one cmss function no music or cinema
and finally i dont use any eax effects with the cmss function

• DD, DTS and CMSS Quest

i own an Audigy 2 ZS (latest drivers) and I have a set of Altec Lansing 25 Speakers(5.) connected to the analogue outputs. My DVD playback software is Intervideo WinDVD 6. My question is this: to get 5. sound for DD and DTS I have to enable CMSS from the EAX console. If CMSS is switched off i only get sound through the 2 front speakers. Is this a design decision? I would have thought the DD and DTS decoder on the Audigy 2 ZS would play the sound to all the speakers automatically. I have the latest drivers (but not program updates) and checked all possible settings with the Creative and WinDVD6 programs also WinXP(SP2) settings.
Thanks for your time

This is wrong. CMSS is not DD or DTS. They are completely different and unreleated. In order to enable DVD software to allow the card for DD and DTS you must make sure it is using the card not the software to decode the sound. Right now it sounds like you are using the software. So the question is can your software decode DTS and DD? For example, when you play a DVD in DTS you should see a little red DTS icon on in your player. I use power dvd and you have to buy audio packs to enable DTS and DD. But since the Audigy 2 ZS can decode DTS and DD you have the set the audio settings to S/PDIF. CMSS only decodes stereo sound, DTS and DD are totally different technologies to my knowledge. If your software only supports stereo you can use CMSS to make it "surround" but it is not DD or DTS.
This is in one of the mod's post above:
2) Decode the AC3/DTS with your Sound Blaster.
You should choose this option if you don't have an external decoder. In the DVD software, select 'SPDIF' as the audio output method and make sure that 'SPDIF Pass-through' in the souncard options is off. The DVD software will now pass the compressed audio to your soundcard, which will then decode the data. The soundcard will output the 6 channels using the analogue connections (or digital DIN, more on this later). If you try to use a digital optical/coax connection to your speakers, you will only hear faint sounds from the front left/right speakers.Message Edited by Gilgamesh on 03-2-2005 04:29 PM

• Audigy 2 NX quest

So I have a solution to the problem but I wanted to check to see what everyone thought before I went out and spent money on a replacement part.
A day or two ago my Audigy 2 NX (external sound card) just stoped getting power (it seems). All the lights went blank but occasionally they will blink for a few sequences then go blank again. The strange thing is that the red internal lead behind the optical out/in is on...just nothing else seems to be getting power.
Things I have tried:
I uninstalled everything and tried reinstalling but it does not recognize the NX (perhaps because it has no power?)
I switched USB ports to see if that was the problem.
I plugged the NX directly into the wall (thinking the surge protector might have a bad plug).
After all this did not fix the problem, the only thing I thought made sense was that it was the power adapter that had just gone out. The adapter itself seemed overly hot and was making more internal noise than I thought was normal but that does not nessisarily prove anything. There is a replacement part but, again, I am only running of surface logic so I thought I would post here to get a second opinion before I spent any money on something that may, in fact, not even be the problem.
Thanks for any assistance you can give me.

Ok so I found some posts that seem to have the same problem but no solution so I will keep checking this post to see if anyone tried the replacement cable or found something else that worked.

• SB Audigy 2ZS clicking quest

Before I go through the hassle of tweaking all kinds of settings in windows and scrubbing and reinstall drivers (and thereby getting progressi'vely more frustrated), I want to see if anyone else has had the same problem I am and if they found a solid solution.
I have an Intel P4 based machine with a gugabyte 8KNXP mobo. The only cards in my machine are an ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 9800 PRO, and my Audigy 2ZS. The vid card is riding in the AGP slot, and I have moved my sound card to every PCI slot except the one next to the video card due to heat reasons.
My sound is perfectly fine whenever I am not gaming. When it does act up, I do not get the crackling I have heard posted here by other people. What I get is a very regular click/pop. It is very sudden, very short, and *very* regular. The clicks are usually about a second and a half apart. The clicking isn't always present. It will come and go. When it shows up, it usually continues until I shut the game down, although there are cases when it will just suddenly stop and everything is ok again.
I have had this problem playing online games. WoW, EQ2, EVE, GuildWars, etc... Non-network games don't give me this problem.
The obvious assumption here is that it is network related. My motherboards onboard network controller is on IRQ 8. My audigy is on IRQ 22. No conflict there.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

Hello,
Thanks for the reply! In surround mixer, under source, I do see the last slide on the right is mic, but there isn't a mute option under the slide. I tried moving the slide all the way down, but that didn't help. Any other ideas? I'm desperate!!!!!!! Need communication during game!! Thanks

• Audigy 2 zs quest

I am new to the Audigy card and would like to know how to record whatever is playing on my computer such as something from the internet.

jellybean48,
You can use the MediaSource application to do the recording. Make sure you have set the source to 'What U Hear' option. You can also check the MediaSource FAQ at Knowledgebase. Look under Create with MediaSource.

• Audigy 1 to Audigy 2 - Cheapskate Quest

Hi
I currently have an Audigy Platinum system in my PC replete with the 5.25 inch front panel.
Having looked at the front panel that comes with some of the Audigy 2 cards I see little difference between them. Can I just buy an Audigy 2 card and then plug my Audigy front panel into the new card?
This will save me some ?50 if I can.
The Dark Side

TheDarkSide,
Unfortunately the Audigy dri've is not compatible with the Audigy 2. There were changes made to the way that the dri've communicates and this requires the updated dri've.

• Audigy 2 Value quest

How exactly is the audigy 2 value different from the other Audigy 2's? Does it use a different DSP? I want to know for sure if there would be any negati've impact on frame rate in games with an audigy 2 value versus the audigy 2 zs.

The FireWire port is exactly that, a FireWire port on the card. You can use FireWire to connect to DV cameras, FireWire devices like external harddri'ves, and to connect to another PC with FireWire (networking).
The Digital I/O module is an upgrade accessory that gives you more inputs/outputs. If you don't need FireWire or THX Certification, then you can use the Audigy 2 Value.
What kind of speakers will you be connecting to, and what will you be using the card for (mainly)?

• Audigy 2 zs questi

Um, should i adjust hardware alleceration in windows or just leave it on high?

You will need to use Creative Mediasource Player if you intend to use the Timescaling and Cleanup options. You should see that mentioned, in the lower right corner of EAX Console. These features have no effect if another player is used, such as WMP0.
A "better" 7. system? It depends on what you define as better. There is a higher end 7. system from Creative themselves, called Gigaworks S750. But is costs at least double what your Inspire costed.
As for a better player it again depends on what you need. There is a more advanced player, foobar2000, which includes many customizations and filters.

• Audigy 2zs mic questi

Can I still use my onboard mic? If so, how do I set that up?
Also, I've noticed this morning that I now get a nasty kind of crackling when recording through my mics. I've just moved, but otherwise nothing's changed. As far as eq settings and levels and whatnot, I can't find anything wrong. I used a couple different record settings in my surround mixer, and got the same result. I haven't tried recording from another input as of yet, maybe that's my next step.
Anyway, if anyone can offer help or advice, I'd be much obliged.

If I plug the pink in pink and the head sets bacl into green it sort of works.
Sort of? Can you be more specific? If you want to connect to the back of the card that would be the way to do it. The green output is for "front" speakers or a headset. I'd recommend setting the speaker selection to Headphones then, otherwise it will output some sound to the rear speakers and center/sub, for surround sound, instead of sending all sound as a stereo signal through headphones. The microphone is connected correctly, just make sure you set up the mixer, especially the slide for recording sources.
You mentioned you have a Platinum set, so alternati'vely you can connect the headset to the dri'vebay, it has a headphone connection and a mic in2.

• Crackling/Popping problems with Audigy 2 Va

Well I too suffering from this problem. It hasn't happened before, it seems to be getting worse ever since I tried switching PCI slots. I usually get the problem when I run Winamp and try to browse my computer at the sametime. I also get the problem when I play Guild Wars and not any other game like Half Life 2.
Here's my system specs
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe
Athlon XP 2800+ @ 2.2Ghz
GB PC3200 DDR Ram Dual Channel @ 52MBx2
Radeon 9700Pro AGP 28MB
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Value
52GB of Total Hard Dri've Space
Some solutions I've tried.
PCI Latency (from 32 to 64, sound and video)
Using different PCI Slots
Sound IRQ and Video IRQ is not sharing
Bios settings
Lowering volume, in game and on the computer
Disabling extra Audigy features (CMSS, EAX, Parametric EQ)
Though I haven't reinstall the drivers yet, I will do that someday if that might help and if it has been successful to a few.

I'm back - with a SOLUTION to the "ripped speaker like" sound problem when playing QUICKTIME! ! !
And somebody better tell --------- APPLE!!! I think.
OK - here it is.... I never really liked QUICKTIME anyway. So I went to this site and downloaded for really <EM>FREE</EM> - QUICKTIME ALTERNATIVEhttp://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Video-Players/QuickTime-Alternati've.shtml
Then before I installed it - I uninstalled Apple's QUICKTIME.
Then I installed QUICKTIME ALTERNATIVE.
And guess what? No sound distortion. And quicktime alternati've seems pretty cool.
So there's a rotten golden apple around - they have to fix there own problem - and CREATIVE should force them.
Happy? reply to the forum and tell me. :womanhappy:

• EAX + 5.1 + C

Is EAX (-3) supposed to be used while gaming or similar in 5. with CMSS?
Cuz it sounds horrible ingame. I mean, like everything that happens in center in front of u sounds bad, cuz the center speaker has little bass, it sounds like the sound from back speakers but in front...
Is this normal?

On Audigy cards CMSS disables itself automatically if the game uses all channels wich are avaiable. On movie playback (ingame movies, too) the sound maybe stereo, so CMSS will enhance it. If you want to turn CMSS on, set the options like Macro-FX and so on to: Automatic. X-FI drivers will decide how CMSS is used. Normally, you wont need CMSS @ all. Games, wich will use 5. channels will sound OK without. If you want to use 2., use headphones to get 3d positional audio. Then CMSS is usefull, because it can downmix 5. sourround- sound to 2.. With Macro-FX this can be funny. But this isnt needed...Use CMSS only with stereo music- playback and set stereo sourround in CMSS tab to 50%. PS: Dont use headphone- mode!?Sounds weird...

• No Center/Sub from Audigy using Klipsch Promedia 5.1 (analog) - NOT a CMSS/digital output qu

<FONT face=Garamond>I am receiving no center/sub output from my Audigy Platinum card. I have had the card installed on the same system (P4 3.0/ASUS P4800 Mobo/Win XP Pro SP2) for a couple of years with no problems. I recently began experiencing intermittent loss of my center/sub channel. Since I have not changed the connections in quite some time, I was able to rule out an improper output connection. Also, I was able to independently test the speakers themselves and the center and sub are both functioning. Additionally, I switched my Klipsch volume/channel output controller to headphone mode and ran the Creative Speaker diagnostic and I hear four channels (FR/FL/RR/RL) in the headphones (as I do with my front and rear speakers) but I <EM>do not</EM> receive any signal for the center channel (i.e., no "center channel" speech signal). Based on all of the above, I am certain that the speakers are functioning correctly (I am of course using them in analogue mode), there is no "switch" on the rear of the subwoofer for 2/2., all of my Creative and windows software are configured for 5. audio. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all of the creative drivers and software (using Driver Cleaner Pro in Windows Safe Mode) and reinstalled from my original Audigy CD and then performed a complete Auto Update from the Soundblaster.com site. <Still no center/sub even in diagnostic test!!!!
<FONT face=Garamond color=#ff0000 size=4>
I want to be clear: I am not confused about CMSS 5. gaming/audio issues; I believe this is purely a soundcard output issue. Despite all the grousing I read about the Creative driver series, I have been most happy with the Audigy Plat card. It has performed extremely well with the Klipsch 5. in gaming, DVD, and audio contexts for several years through numerous driver updates. I know how to configure the settings to get true 5. in any context. However, now I am completely stumped. Is there anything I have overlooked or might try so I do not have to conclude that this great card has just "crapped out" and now needs to be replaced?
Thanks for listening.

<SPAN>Thank you! I had my digital coax connected there with an adapter, but since that can only carry ac-3 and stereo signals im better of using direct 5 chan ( i don?t watch movies on my PC... that?s what the home theater is for) Most games use EAX or some other direct sound, so ill stick with 5. direct analog. who would have thought the digital jack was also for center/sub heh.

• Help with cmss-3d audigy 2 NX in win 7

well, i have a problem here. when i installed a fresh win 7, i installed the audigy 2 nx driver, named "USB_W7DRV_LB__0_0099", which is the newest version. at that time before i unpluged it from the usb port, it worked well with all function, cmss-3d, eax ... then i decided to unplug it from the usb port to bring it to my friend house, then back, then plug it again into the exact same usb port as before. however, from now the cmss-3d not working any more. I still can play movies with 5. sound, but the cmss-3d functione makes no effect at all. for example. before I played a song, enable the cmss, that would make sound through all speakers. now i enable/disable, no effect, sound only through front speakers.
i check the control panel/sound and got this message. even i tried to uninstall the usb sound blaster, uninstall driver and reinstall them, still got the same problem
any one can fix this issue? i dont like to reinstall the new win 7.
