Audio both channels??

I recorded some audio seperately on a zoom h4n. Now that I have it in FCPX, I can't get the audio on both channels.  It only comes out the right channel. Is there a way to get it working on both?  I have tried the Pan mode to stereo left/right but nothing seems to work.

ahhhhh.... once i double clicked on the synced video/audio file in the timeline it allowed to make the adjustment in the inspector window.
I switched the audio from stereo to dual mono. It appears to be working now on both channels.  Thats weird how FCPX treats the synced audio / video files as a "compound clip".
thanks for the help.

  • Can I playback in both channels with my audio interface?

From what I've found so far I'm afraid the answer is already "no" but I have to ask for myself.
When I record into QuickTime movie (not Pro) using my Alesis IO|14 Firewire interface, it only plays back on the left channel.
Is there ANY way to get it to play back on both channels?  (Or is this a sneaky way of urging us to upgrade to QT Pro?)
I'm assuming the audio quality of my M-Audio Nova condenser mic is better than my iMac's built-in mic, which is why I'd really like to do this.  I don't even need true stereo, just both channels playing back.
    (QT 10.1, on Lion)
    Thanks.

The mic and interface record just fine into GarageBand, either as stereo or mono, and plays back out of both channels with the same setup, so I think the problem is with QT.
I don't find any kind of switch like that in the Hardware Direct Monitoring software for the Alesis, but I'll investigate further.
As I mentioned, I've searched this and other forums and it seems like this is just how QT is set up. But I was hoping for some sort of solution.
As previously indicated, I am not familiar with your IO device, so let me ask a few questions here.
    1) Is the Nova mic you mentioned mono or stereo?
    2) If mono, are you using two of them?
    3) If mono and you are not using a pair of mics, does the input interface hardware have the ability to blend left and right (mic 1 and mic 2) input channels?
    4) If mono, you are not using a pair of mics, and the device has no ability to blend left and right channels, are you you using an adapter cable to input a split signal to both input channels of the device?
If you are using a mono mic to input a signal to only one channel of the input device and are not/cannot blend this signal to both channels before output via the Firewire cable, then its sounds like your system is working normally and correctly. Basically, the Firewire audio is sent to the QT app as received from the Firewire device and recorded as is in stereo. I.e., if the left channel is active with the mic signal and the right channel is empty, then the audio is recorded only to the left channel and the right channel records the "nil" signal/nothing. On the other hand, GarageBand is an audio editor designed specifically to blend, pan, duck, filter, and/or otherwise taylor audio content as desired by the user. (I.e., which includes the ability to re-channel a single mono audio channel to both channels of a stereo track during the recording process which the QT app can't do.) In short, both apps are doing what they are designed to do as they were designed to do it. As such and as previously noted you have three basic options here.
    1) You force the IO device to send stereo or two-channel mono audio to your Mac by using two separate mics, use a single stereo mic with dual channel audio output, using an adapter cable to split the single mono mic audio output line into two separate lines to be plugged into both channels of your IO device, or you can apply/blend the active channel to left and right Firewire output channels within the device if it has this capability.
    2) You can use GarageBand to do create and export audio recordings instead of the QT app, or
    3) You can purchase QT 7 Pro in order to fix your left channel problem post recording by simply applying the left channel audio to both left and right channels within the audio track so it will play as you want in any media player on your computer.
(Actually, there is a fourth option if you are using an external amplifier for playback, which is to simply use the output amplifier to accomplish re-channelization during playback rather than actually fixing the media file with QT 7 Pro.)

  • Mono Audio in Both Channels

I have audio AIFF files recorded in mono that when imported and put into the timeline only play in one channel (sometimes left and sometimes right apparently at random). It makes no difference how the pan is set for a given clip. How can I get these clips to output in both channels?

    Rienk wrote:
I bet you hear it on the left channel when the audioclip is on audio track 1, 3, 5, 7 or etc. And you hear it on the right channel when it is on track 2, 4, 6, or etc.
Go to User Preferences and check the Audio Outputs tab.
That's right, odd on one side and even on the other.
The Audio Outputs setting fixed it, but that preference only applies to new sequences. You have to set it for the current sequence in the Sequence menu.
    Thanks.

  • Mono audio input from lapel mic - how to create audio output in both channels?

I'm recording audio with mono lapel mic, i.e. only one channel.
I need output audio in the finished movie to play in both channels.
Can that be done in FCP X, and how.
    Thanks a bunch.

    Thanks, David.
So, if I have talent A on the left channel of the video, and talent B on the right channel of the same stereo recording...
can I pan each of these "mono" sides centered so they both come out the left and right sides ?

  • Duplicating audio to play in both channels

I want to take my audio for channel one and duplicate it so that the same audio plays out of both left and right channels. I can duplicate the audio and put it on the layer below but it just plays both layers our of the left channel. how can i make it play out of both left and right channels?
    Thanks

It sounds like you originally had a stereo pair (a1/a2) that you unlinked, which gave you a Mono(a1) and a Mono(a2), and then you deleted one of them.
When you unlink a stereo pair, each resulting Mono track retains its original properties, including left or right channel assignment. This can be changed with the pan control in the Viewer.
When you duplicated the clip (a1 for sake of argument) and placed it on a new track, all you got was another copy that retained all the same characteristics of the original - including the left or right channel assignment. That's why you still only had audio from one channel.
The way to change this is to pan to center as I described above.

  • Speakers - both channels out of right speaker

Hi - I have a Macbook Pro, bought second hand so should have said at the time, but....
All the sound, both channels, comes out of the right speaker.  When i go into the Audio MIDI set up app, and play with the channel testing for the built in output, when i do the white noise test on channel 1, it comes out of channel 2.  Channel 2 then obviously comes out correctly.  When the channel 1 test comes out of the right speaker, it's just not quite as strong and clear sounding as the right channel sound.  Then if i've got music playing and i go to the sound preferences, when i use the balance slider left to right, when left, it's still playing out of the right speaker, just quieter.
When my headphone or external speakers are plugged in, it works just fine.  Left and right are perfect and I can use the balance slider to move the sound left to right and it behaves accordingly.
I was on Mountain Lion and am now on Yosemite and it's made no different.  It had Mountain Lion when i bought it.
    Any ideas?
    thx

  • Record audio Left channel mono playback

I'm new to Captivate and setting up a microphone for recording audio.  Recording equipment is a single microphone into an E-Mu 0404 USB interface.  The interface has 2 mic inputs.  The mic is plugged into the left channel.  Sound is recorded fine, but only plays back on the left channel.  How can I get the single channel treated as mono so playback is on both ears?
    Thanks

    Hi there
Assuming you can do so, perhaps consider a Y connector that makes the mic feed into both channels.
Also, report this to Adobe as I've seen many posts here regarding stereo and only hearing one channel.

  • Audio Swap Channels not working

I'm running Premiere Pro CS4 on a Dell XPS that was recently upgraded to 64bit.  I have 8GB memory, Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q660 @ 2.40 GHz. My sound card went bad so I'm only using the sound device that came with the computer.  The device manager says a High Def Audio Device (internal HD audio BUS) is the sound device being used.  No other name is given.
The audio file I am working with shows this in Properties :Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 16 bit - Stereo; Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
Question:  I've never had a problem adding a second line of audio, going to Audio, Stereo, Swap Channels.  This time, the audio won't swap channels.  I've tried it several times, closing Premiere, rebooting, it still isn't working.
Is this a sound card problem or something else?  I stupidly told IT I don't need another sound card as long as I can hear it.  I'm thinking I made a mistake.  Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I don't do any sound stuff in Premiere and have only Premiere CS3...  but I have been doing some sound outside of Premiere and have been reading up on using Premiere for doing some sound editing.  Does this portion of the help file on mapping sound do you any good ?  The bold I put there to more or less ask if you have that enabled or not since you might have different setting since upgrading to 64 bit ??

    Map audio channels
You can define how a clip’s audio is mapped to channels, audio tracks, or  both when the clip is added to a sequence or viewed in the Source Monitor. You  can determine how different types of clips are mapped, by default, by setting  Audio Output Mapping preferences. Mapping is applied to clips in the Project  panel using the Source Channel Mappings command. You can simultaneously apply  the command to multiple master clips. When the command is applied, the following  controls are available in the Source Channel Mappings dialog box:
    Track Format
Defines the type of track in which the clip’s audio channels are  grouped—mono, stereo, mono as stereo, or 5.1 surround. When you change a master  clip’s track format from stereo or 5.1 surround to mono, Adobe Premiere Pro maps  each channel to a separate mono track. When you add the clip to the sequence,  the clips on the separate mono tracks are linked together. For more information  on multi‑clip links, see Linking multiple audio  clips.
    Enable
Enables or disables an audio source channel. When you add a clip to a  sequence, only the enabled channels are added to the Timeline panel. Disabling a  source channel also prevents you from swapping its output channel with another  source channel.
    Source Channel
Lists the original channels of the clip’s audio.
    Track
Displays the order that the channels are placed into the Timeline panel.
Note: Under Track, the numbers  don’t correlate with the actual audio track numbers.
    Channel
Displays the channel type that the source channel is mapped to.
    Playback button and slider
Lets you preview the audio of the selected source channel. You can preview a  source channel whether it’s enabled or not. The playback button and slider is  unavailable if you’re applying the Source Channel Mappings command to multiple  master clips. You should map source audio channels before adding a clip to a sequence. If  you apply the Source Channel Mappings command to a master clip that’s been added  to a sequence, you can swap only the output tracks and channels between source  channels. The Track Format and Enable controls are unavailable, preventing the  master clip’s overall configuration from becoming out of sync with instances of  the master clip already in a sequence.

  • Measuring with both channels of virtual bench simultaneously in labview, error 375903

Hi, I am trying to perform two measurements simultanously using both channels of the Virtual Bench's analog input. I have selected MSO channel 1 and 2 for the measurements yet I am getting error 375903 returned evewry time saying the resource requested is reserved. I am not running any other software that should be using the virtual bench. The error occurs when I am initializing the session, before a measurement has even been made. Can someone tell me how to call each channel so that I am not getting this resource reservation conflict?
I have included the VI and a screenshot of the error.
    Thanks!

The MSO only supports a single instrument session, and your VI uses two. To use both channels, remove the second MSO session and specify both channels in the MSO Configure Analog Channel.vi
Here is an example that uses both scope channels:

  • Tektronix AFG 3022: How to use both channel with VISA

    Hi all!
I am trying to control the AFG with LabView using the NI VISA driver. There are several given VIs I can use, but I don´t know how to use both channels at the same time correctly. I attached a VI I made.
    Problems are:
-Sometimes it works, sometimes random errors occur.
-The waveform generation doesn´t start at the same time.
-To stop the waveform generation I used the "initialize VI" because I found no better one. Else the generation goes on and on, even though the task was terminated in LabView.
-How can I trigger the AFG with my NI 6259 in LabView?
I hope someone has some good ideas helping me out...

    Hi Benjamin,
thanks for the replay. You helped me out very good! I had the Visa driver. I downloaded the driver in your link and it´s way better (more functionality) than the one I used. I now have a configuration, which is working. But there are two things I still doen´t know:
    - How can I put out a trigger signal on the NI 6259. Am I doing this over the normal daqmx VIs? (I, by now, didn´t have the time to try it myself, maybe someone can give me a hint. Saves time...)
    - I want to create two signals on the AFG that are the same, but one is inverted. At the AFG it is no problem (output menu-> invert on/off). This function doesn´t seem to be available in the driver. Is there a possibilty to modify the driver and create a VI with that functionality? Can anyone do this for me or explain to me what I need to do it myself and how to do it?
    Best regards

  • Extreme using BOTH channel 1

For many years I have been using my old reliable Snow Saucer base station, with my "Network" on channel 9.
I liked the fact that the Snow had one utility app for getting into the base station itself, and a different app for configuring the network itself.
Is there an app other the Airport Utility 5.6.1 for seeing details about the base station?  For instance, I might want to manually  program the MAC numbers of the computers that are allowed to use the base station.
I have just finished configuring a "New Network" using an Airport Extreme.  My laptop is currently reaching the internet using it.
My WiFi sniffer says that it is broadcasting on both Channel 1 and 149.
    1) Why?  Are these the "default" channels for the two different 802.xxx  standards?
    2) How do I determine which channel my laptop is receiving?  There must be an Airport Utility app for that or is it somewhere in the various System Preferences or Configuration panes?
    2) How do I tell the Extreme which channels I desire to use (to avoid channels being used by my neighbors)?
Next step is to re-program the Snow Saucer to into Bridge Mode so that my old computers can use wireless on the "old" 802.xxx channel...

Is there an app other the Airport Utility 5.6.1 for seeing details about the base station?  For instance, I might want to manually  program the MAC numbers of the computers that are allowed to use the base station.
There are currently two versions of the AirPort Utility (for Macs) for the latest versions of the AirPort base stations. Version 6.1, which has an iOS-like interface, and 5.6 which is more full-featured and includes the feature to restrict network clients by their MAC address. For Windows PCs there is version 5.6.1.
My WiFi sniffer says that it is broadcasting on both Channel 1 and 149.
    1) Why?  Are these the "default" channels for the two different 802.xxx  standards?
The newer AirPort base stations are simultaneous dual-band wireless routers. That means that they have two Wi-Fi radios, one on the 2.4 and the other on the 5 GHz radio band. Channels 1-14 are typical for the 2.4 GHz band; higher channels are used on the 5 GHz band. For the AirPorts, the default radio channel on both bands is set to "Automatic." With this setting, the AirPort attempts to find a channel for each band that has the least Wi-Fi interference or competition from other nearby Wi-Fis. Yours, most likely, chose those channels for that reason.
    2) How do I determine which channel my laptop is receiving?  There must be an Airport Utility app for that or is it somewhere in the various System Preferences or Configuration panes?
Right-click or Option-click the AirPort icon in the OS X menu bar. The radio channel that your Mac is connected to will be revealed in the drop-down menu.
    2) How do I tell the Extreme which channels I desire to use (to avoid channels being used by my neighbors)?
The "Automatic" setting does a pretty decent job already for doing this, but if you want to double-check, I would suggest using a utility like iStumbler. It will show you the Wi-Fis operating nearby and their respective signal strength. You will want to look for those with the strongest signal, and then, note which channels they are operating on. You can then elect to change channels to not use the same as theirs.

  • Mixing audio as stereo onto both channels...

Hi guys, I think this might seem like a real amateur question but I've struggled with this for a while now! Thought I better just hang my head and ask!...
I recently filmed a therapy session with one clip mic on each person; I set the camera so it put each clip mic onto each separate mono channel, so I could test them individually, then I planned to mix them as stereo in the edit.
After a few tries, I've nested the audio as once sequence and mixed it but still when I export and play back the final .mov the audio comes separately through each speaker.
Can someone educate me please? Be much obliged!
    Alex

I've nested the audio as once sequence and mixed it but still when I export and play back the final .mov the audio comes separately through each speaker.
Mixed it how? And what do you mean; "the audio comes separately through each speaker" ? Does that mean BOTH speakers? How did you pan the clips on A1 and A2? If both are panned to 0, then both track's audio will output to both output channels (left + right), otherwise known as mono.
If you want to make them stereo, pan each track's clips differently. For example, if you pan the clips on A1 to -1, they will only output to the left output channel. I'd recommend panning the clips on A1 to -.75 and the clips on track A2 to .75.

  • Applying audio to both channels

Does anyone know how you can take a signal that is already inported into imovie that only has audio on the right channel and apply it to both audio channels?
      Mac OS X (10.0.x)

iMovie does not allow editing of left and right channels BUT that's why it integrates with GarageBand! If you have the latest version of iLife, you can export the project to GarageBand for scoring and sound editing! This allows you to place sounds in the left or right tracks.
If you have QuickTime Pro, you can also do the same sort of thing, but I find it easier in GarageBand.
