Audio editing across tracks after OMF/AAF import problems

Hi there,
I'm having difficulty getting my head around the way STP handles multiple-mono audio files.  I'm lucky enough in my job to have a choice of audio editing tools for what I'm working on.  For speech I use SADiE, for more complex projects involving automation I'll often use ProTools & for podcasting I find that STP is pretty good - especially for enhanced podcasts with pictures & web-links etc.
So now to my problem.  I've brought an OMF project, from ProTools, home to work on in STP. The import went smoothly, every thing in the right place & sounds ok.  However, all the stereo audio files are now split across 2 tracks; 1 track for the left leg another track for the right leg.   I can't now edit the stereo content in any easy form.  I've tried using the 'blade all' tool to cut across the 2 tracks, but I can't then delete & ripple the audio.  This leaves me with a gap that I have to manually close.  Needless to say, I'm finding this frustrating as it's making what should be a simple process un-neccessarily long-winded.
Both ProTools & SADiE allow me to group files like this so that they can be treated like a stereo file.  I've looked everywhere, but I can't see a function in STP that does the same.  Am I missing something obvious?  I can't be the only person who's had to deal with files like this can I?
The only workaround I've found is to use the export command to bounce the 2 tracks to a stereo file, however, this loses any existing edits so I can't unpick them if there are problems.
Any ideas anyone?  Can this be done or should I just stick to my other audio tools for this sort of thing?
Thanks

ProTools uses WAV, in fact it uses the Broadcast Wav standard. The problem is the way it handles files. It still splits stereo files into separate L & R files. It's just that it hides this from the user. When you drag a stereo file in from PT's region list (the equivalent of STP's bin) to the playlist, the two files appear as one as they should do. The downside is that OMF/AAF export still treats them as individual files.
My problem is that I was halfway through an edit when I tried to move it from one system to another. If the edit was complete & just needed mixing, then it would have been less of an issue.
But you're right, there's probably some tool on the net that will solve this issue

  • Logic 7.1.1 OMF/AAF import work around

    Hi everyone
I may just have a proper workaround for all you poor audio types like myself, trying to do post sound in logic.
Firslty, let me say it helps if you have Protools (6.4 is fine) with digitranslator.
I've been trying to import a 94 minute feature film into logic since november last year, even spent christmas with my laptop trying to get any info I could to transfer to logic.....nothing, crashed every time.
Been checking up on this forum every few days, to see if there have been any breakthroughs....... seems apple doesn't want to take any responsibility yet!
So latest logic 7.1.1, OSX.3.9,G5 1.8dp,1.5 gb ram,all apple updates latest versions.
Anyway, here's how I achieved a full and working transfer of 21 audio tracks from Protools into Logic.
Exported music and fx tracks together from Protools = 6 tracks. selected AAF / 25fps/consolidate media.
    Imported into logic no problem...SAVE
Exported Atmoses = 6 tracks. same as above AAF/25fps/consolidate.
Of course this time when I imported, all the automation fades got changed.
To get around this and apologies for all that may know this already, after first import, with cursor over the number 1 (far left)on track 1, pull entire track down to track 30 and the repeat for all remaining tracks, but obviously 29,28,27 etc, respectively.
Then reasign track number( cursor over track name/Audio 1 reasign to audio 30/move automation data, when window appears) and do this for the remaining tracks.
Then highlight track 30 and from view menu, hide current track.
Repeat for the remaining tracks and then lock these tracks.
Then you can import the next set of tracks, in my case it was the atmoses.
Then continue the export of tracks(AAF/25fps/consolidate etc) (I had to export all the dialogue as individual tracks as it was too much data for logic to handle)and import in the same way as I've just described, moving the set of tracks down to available tracks/reasigning/hiding original and locking.
It ain't perfect and it's a collosal pain in the backside, but it works, took me from 11am till 6pm.
I hope this all makes sense and helps some of you, maybe it's only going to work on some setups, but if you're desperate, give it a go.
    Good luck

Thanks, but I have Tiger on a seperate partition and logic won't boot!
tried a new install several times but doesn't want to know.

  • How to match audio levels across tracks?

I'm creating a CD of two-person conversations to use for language study--30 conversations in all. There are several different voice sources; all of them were recorded in a studio, though at different times and places, with small variations in audio levels.
For each conversation, I start by putting each voice in its own track in the timeline. Then I go into the mixer to balance them. While playing the tracks, I check to make sure that the overall volume is just short of maxing out in the Out 1 channel strip; if the red peak indicator comes on, then I lower the volume slightly in the offending track. Once everything is OK, I go back into the timeline and use Export Mix to save the conversation. I go through this same procedure for each of the 30 conversations.
I thought this would result in 30 tracks which have the same overall volume; however, when I burn these tracks to a CD and play them one after another, there is enough variation between tracks that I am forced to fiddle with the volume on the CD player.
What's more, some of the tracks are a bit softer than I'd like. I want to be able to play the CD in a classroom and be sure that all students can hear it clearly. Yet, while I was mixing each track, I made sure to run the volume up as far as possible without causing clipping.
So my question: Have I done something wrong? Is another step needed to get separate tracks to match levels? If so, is this done within Soundtrack, or is it done when burning to CD? And how does one get the tracks even louder without causing clipping?
I'm quite new to audio work, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

I just did a similar project, and I must agree that compression is your friend! It's also an art form. I recommend you search the web and find an introduction to the concept.
You can think of it like this: You set a "threshold", and the compressor automatically reduces the volume of any part of the track gets louder than your threshold. This can have the effect of making the quiet parts of your track louder without letting the loud parts clip.
Of course, there are trade-offs. Go too far, and you'll squash out all the dynamic range from your audio. Also, making the quiet parts louder means making the noise louder too!
Play with it and see if it helps: Click on the "*" button on the track, and add the Soundtrack Pro Compressor effect. Click the "Advanced..." button for the effect, and click the "Show Presets" button. Under "User Presets, Vocal Compressors" you'll find some good starting points. Try them all and see what kind of effects you get.
Once your tracks are balanced you can experiment with putting a single compressor on "Out 1". It can help you get the level of your whole mix up without inducing a bunch of clipping.
Yo should also experiment with the "DeEsser" which helps take the edge of "sss" sounds, among other things. It might be very useful for your project. Take a look at the presets and listen to what they all do. If you use both DeEsser and Compressor, you should probably put the DeEsser first.
When you play with effects, it's good to strive for moderation and to give your ears a break once in a while. Also a good idea to listen to your results on multiple speakers. It's easy to get carried away and make your audio sound very unnatural!
    Have fun!

  • Trasferring Audio Edits as AAF from Premiere to Nuendo and back

    Hello everybody,
I'm a Sound Designer for video games, and also deal with cinematic sequences. I use Nuendo for audio editing / sound design, while the video editors work with Premiere. We share the same audio footage that is stored on our internal server, and we copy the footage manually (or over Perforce) on our local PCs. Basically to make sure we're always dealing with the same footage in a fixed and locked format during the entire production chain from capture to final render. This obviously makes an AAF with 'embedded' audio obsolete and in fact unwanted, as well as any other "work-in-progress" audio render from one platform to another.
    Situation 1: Premiere -> Nuendo
In Premiere we have several Stereo audio tracks with stereo footage.
    AAF is exported from Premiere
AAF is then imported into Nuendo
    Result:
Stereo tracks are imported wrong, because split into mono, which naturally duplicates the amount of tracks.
Stereo footage is now duplicated too due to duplication of track amount.
Stereo footage is still stereo, because manually copied from server.
    Expectation:
Stereo tracks should remain stereo without splitting or duplicating tracks.
    Situation 2: Nuendo -> Premiere
In Nuendo there are several Stereo audio tracks with stereo footage.
    AAF is exported from Nuendo
AAF is then imported into Premiere
    Result:
Stereo tracks are imported as Mono tracks (this time without duplicating the track number)
Stereo footage is not accepted, due to mismatch with track format (Mono)
    Expectation:
Stereo tracks should remain stereo which then accept stereo footage
It's really important for us that the audio footage doesn't change format during the production chain. So for instance splitting stereo into mono left / mono right is not a good option as we want the original footage to remain untouched from capture to final render. So we need stereo tracks to remain stereo and mono tracks to remain mono, just as the original edit.
Using OMF instead of AAF causes the same problem, and adds more problems with the naming of the footage. So AAF is currently the best yet buggy method we have.
In the past I have transferred AAF files from Protools into Nuendo, and it worked fine, which makes me tend to believe the solution has to be somewhere in Premiere.
Any hints, tips and useful experiences are very welcome. Thanks a lot!
    Regards
    Christian

  • Encore CS3 - Hangs and import problems with menus and avi footage with audio tracks present.

I'm trying to import some footage files in .avi format into Encore CS3 and am having several problems.
In what follows when I say "crash" I mean Encore quits with a standard Windows error. When I say "hang" I mean Encore does not quit but rather becomes an unresponsive process that must be killed manually using Windows Task Manager.
    My System:
    WinXP Pro SP2
2.93 GHz Intel Celeron CPU - single core
    Intel PERL mobo
    3GB 400MHz RAM
    NVidia 7800GS video
I mention these specs however I am not experiencing any hardware
related bugs or issues (like out of memory or video driver crashes
etc) when using any CS3 app.
The footage files (as reported by GSpot) and problems I am seeing. In all cases GSpot reports that I have the appropriate codec installed:
    footage1.avi - Dx50 XVid 1.0.3, Dolby AC3 48kHz 192kb/s, 716834 KB
Attempting to import as timeline causes Encore CS3 to hang.
Importing as an Asset allows it to import but when I try to click
on it in the project windown to add it to a new empty timeline,
Encore hangs. It plays fine in Windows Media Player.
    footage2.avi - Dx50 XVid 1.0.3, MPEG-1 Layer 3 48kHz 128kb/s, 718302 KB
Imports fine as either a timeline or asset but no audio track comes
with it, even though there is an audio track in the footage. It plays
fine in Windows Media Player. Video imports perfectly, just no audio.
    footage3.avi - Dx50 XVid 1.0.3, MPEG1-Layer3 48kHz 112kb/s, 717606 KB
Imports fine as either a timeline or asset but no audio track comes
with it, even though there is an audio track in the footage. It plays
fine in Windows Media Player. Video imports perfectly, just no
audio. I tried converting this one using AVS to both MPEG3 and DivX,
each using MPEG1-Layer3 44kHz 192kb/s audio, and got the same issue
upon importing into Encore CS3. I also loaded it into Camtasia
Studio and it looked fine over there. The audio was present and I
was able to export it as a .WAV file. When I tried looking at the
file in Soundbooth CS3, there was no audio track or, more
accurately, the audio track was a flat line.
By way of comparison these are importing perfectly:
    footage4.avi - XVID XviD 1.1.0 Beta2, MPEG1-Layer3 48kHz 189kb/s Two mono
    channels LAME3.96r, 717436 KB.

    footage6.avi - XVID XviD 1.1.0 Final, Dolby AC3 48kHz 448kb/s Six
    channels (3/2 .1), 716418 KB.
    footage7.avi - XVID XviD 1.0.3, Dolby AC3 48kHz 448kb/s 6 channels

    footage9.avi - XVID XviD 1.1.2 Final, Dolby AC3 48kHz 448kb/s 6 channels
    (3/2 .1), 2291904 KB
Although this one imported & transcoded correctly, when I went to
build it to a DVD image file I got some strange errors during the
"planning video" stage that prevented the process from completing.
Unfortunately I neglected to write down the error message I recieved
which read like quite nonsensical babble to me, and I have since
deleted the project folder. I remember it was not a memory or
display related error and it included a timestamp where the error
was happening. I played the footage in the preview panel thru the
identified timestamp but it previewed perfectly without even a
jitter in either the video or audio. Took forever to transcode so I
doubt I'll be doing this one again anytime soon.
Another issue I am having is with the motion menus. I burned a DVD and it does not load correctly in one of my DVD players (a Sony rdr-gx330 recorder/player). It appears to take extra time to recognize the disk, the startup (first-play) menu does not show automatically, and I must press the Main Menu button on the

Another issue I am having is with the motion menus. I burned a DVD and it does not load correctly in one of my DVD players (a Sony rdr-gx330 recorder/player). It appears to take extra time to recognize the disk, the startup (first-play) menu does not show automatically, and I must press the Main Menu button on the remote control to make it appear. Other than that it seems to play ok in that player. Also tested it in 2 other DVD players (a Panasonic and Zenith) and it worked just fine like it's supposed to in them. Also plays perfectly in my computer's DVD player/burner using Windows Media Player v10. I tried burning to Memorex +RW single-layer single-sided disks at 6, 7, & 8Mbps project settings but got the exact same result every time.
Encore CS3 crashes fairly often during authoring, particularly during imports, and when I go to edit things like calling up a timeline in the timeline panel, dragging footage into an existing timeline, or changing button links in a menu etc.. I have also experienced seemingly random hangs even more often, probably 5 or 6 times as often as a crash. Saving the project after every little change I make, then closing and restarting Encore allows me to make progress albeit at a significantly reduced workflow rate. Accessing Photoshop from Encore appears to be working flawlessly so far aside from the slow load times. Encore hangs sometimes during video transcoding, repeat the process and it works ok. If I try to import a menu from the library after importing my footage files, Encore hangs trying to import it either at the 50% mark or the 99% mark (it varies even with the same exact menu selected from the library). If I import the menu first and the footage after, then no problems. Also trying to render motion menus after importing footage causes Encore to hang, render before footage import and everything works ok. Interestingly enough, previewing my project in Encore's monitor or preview panels works perfectly even in High quality mode -- in fact it operates quite smoothly in comparison to other apps I have tried. Although those footage files that had missing audio tracks on import obviously played silently, I have yet to experience a hang or crash during a preview or when scrubbing through a timeline in the monitor panel.
The last problem I've seen is with the project cache files. It doesn't always get rid of cache files when stuff is deleted from the project. I was working on one project and surprisingly ran out of disk space. When I tracked it down I found that there were some two dozen copies of a footage file I had repeatedly imported and deleted from the project still sitting in the cache folder. The file was an avi about 2GB so it was taking up some 40 GB of disk space for stuff that was no longer in the project. I tried shutting down Encore and manually deleting all the cache files, and that worked for most of them, but there was one 2GB file that kept reappearing in the cache folder even though it was no longer in the project. The XML file in the cache folder still had references to it in there so I can only assume that was the reason it kept showing up. I eventually had to delete and totally recreate the project from scratch to regain my lost disk space. This included having to sit thru a 6 hour long transcoding session which pissed me off to no end.
Encore CS3 appears on the surface to be a very powerful, feature rich, and approachable app with a simple easy to use interface, but it is awfully bugged in just about every area I have explored and still needs lots and lots of work for it to be really useful. Frankly for me it is pretty damn annoying that I have invested so much money in this suite only to find several of the apps in it (Encore & Premiere in particular) behaving this poorly. In my opinion every single app in the suite exhibits lousy performance whenever you must do anything at all involving the disk from the time you click to start it up until the time you click to close it down. Several of them are just as seriously bugged as Encore too, and being a long time Photoshop v5.5 user I expected much more from Adobe. Even Photoshop is two or three times as slow now (e.g. it takes about 20-30 seconds to simply create an empty 500x500 pixel image file and almost a full minute to load a 30x60 pixel single-layer gif). So far I have attempted to create 6 DVDs using Encore and after 3 weeks of effort have only succeeded in getting one of them onto a final disk -- and that one is kinda limping to work correctly in my DVD player. Three of those projects became so corrupted while working on them that I had to delete them completely and recreate them from scratch, only to find that I still couldn't get them to completion for one reason or another. Seriously disappointing.

  • After Effects CS4 and OMF / AAF

My project's sound editor who I recently brought on board asked me for an OMF or AAF file from my film (that I'm editing together using After Effects CS4).  I exported the OMF file for a clip that was about 15 seconds and the file was > 1GB!
    My questions:
    1)  Is this typical?  Seems like the sound editor shouldn't need anything this massive.
    2)  I couldn't find any exporting tool for AAF - is there a plugin to do this?  Is this a smaller net resultant file?
He said there should be plugins for After Effects to export the kind of thing he needs, so I'm pretty sure these are possible.

    Hello, Scireja.
I think there is a very widespread but understandable confusion regarding the nature of two different kinds of OMF files.
From your description, it seems like you want to export an OMF exchange file, which is a common way to translate a video timeline into something you can take to a DAW application like Pro Tools for audio post, while keeping the audio edits as separate clips.
But the OMF export option in After Effects is for OMF essence files. These are video files, in the native wrapper Avid systems use when ingesting or capturing material. It's not a project with embeded clips, but just a video file.
After Effects can't export this kind of OMF exchage files directly. Premiere Pro does export such files, as this feature is more typical of editing applications. Please note that there could be good news: You have the ability to export an AE project as a Premiere Pro project, and once you have this converted project in PPro, you can then export it as an OMF exchange file.

  • Multitrack editing -- making edits to selections across tracks?

Is it possible to edit two tracks simultaneously in a multitrack file? For example, suppose I have two tracks: track A and track B. It's a conversation between two people (recorded over Skype across two channels). There's a few seconds I want to remove during the conversation, and it happens in the middle of the two tracks. How do I delete a few seconds from both tracks at the same time? I see how to trim the ends of two tracks simultaneously, but not a middle selection.

ProTools uses WAV, in fact it uses the Broadcast Wav standard. The problem is the way it handles files. It still splits stereo files into separate L & R files. • Restoring 2nd audio track after deleting?

In a recent shoot on a Red One, I put the lav audio on mono track 1, and a boom mic on mono track 2.  After importing it into Premiere Pro and placing my clips into a sequence, I felt the boom mic track 2 sounded too echo-y, so I deleted it from the sequence timeline and proceeded to editing my video using track 1 audio only. Well, now the client wants to use the boom mic track.
Is there an way easy way to restore the the 2nd audio track while keeping my edits in place?

Well, it's not really easy or automatic, but if you park the playhead at the first frame of a clip in a sequence, target the track, and then hit M to match frame, you'll load up the master clip for that clip instance into the Source Monitor. From there, you can edit the whole clip or just the audio portion back into the sequence; it should be already marked with an in and out point to match the duration of the sequence clip.

Not all SWF files will successfully import as movie files. How are you setting up your Flash project? Have you ever had this workflow be successful before? Did you try turning your SWF into a FLV file? If you can get your fine to work the first time (last bullet point) why not render it out with an alpha chanel so you don't have to mess with SWF files in the rest of your workflow. That's what I would do.

  • Can't edit folder info after importing & editing using iTunes... Help.

I've notice that when editing CD info after importing into iTunes that sometimes folder names in my music library, under itunes media/music, does not match the info that I've just edited in iTunes. When attempting to edit the folder's name I have to add the folder into iTunes again, to locate music files after edit change (?), only to have the edited folder name switch back to the previous name. Is there something that needs to be disabled. I've looked all over but can't seem to find help for this particular situation.

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
iTunes can't or won't use certain characters in file & folder names and uses a maximum of 40 characters for the file or folder name, inclusive of any extention such as ".mp3" (=4 chars). If you manually rename anything iTunes will lose track of it. The best advice is simply to leave iTunes to it. Once you've thrown the data into it, iTunes will get it back for you when you ask, so why does it matter how iTunes chooses to organize it? Saldy, I can't follow my own advice and choose to keep my library organized manually. These days I use some custom scripts to move things around and update iTunes in one process, but in the past I would tidy up my tags, amend the file & folder names, then remove the album from iTunes & reimport.

  • Mass editing subtitle properties after import

How does one edit the properties of all subtitles within a track after import?
I understand that upon importing a text script I am able to adjust the properties for the entire batch of subtitles at once. After importing the subtitles I need to rearrange the placement of text so that it does not overlap lower thirds and on-screen text native to the video. How do I go about making revisions to all subtitles within a track without removing and re-importing the subtitle track? The reason I ask is because if I remove and re-import the subtitle track, all of the placement adjustments will be lost.
I'm working in Encore CS6 on a Mac.

I think the answer is you can't.

In trying to edit a track - I want to "Delete and Move" the track to automatically fill the area that I deleted - However, after selecting a section to delete - the "Delete and Move" option is grayed out. How do I fix this?

Thank you for your attempt to help me. I appreciate that.
I think I figured out how to fix it-
I found that if I only delete a small amount at the beginning and at the end of the section that I want to remove - and then highlight that section - Then (and only then) does the "Delete and Move" function work to remove the unwanted section and automatically close the gap between the surrounding sections. I was trying to select a whole section and could only delete it - and then manually move it.
    Problem solved.

When I import the films in iMovie I have been asked if I want to change to frame rate 30 (instead of 25). I have chosen 30.
Could it be the setting of a frame rate 60 in my camcorder that causes jerkiness when panning or what else?

I shoot with a camcorder Canon Vixia HF10. The camera has been set to deliver HD quality (1920x1080). But I have accidentally filmed with a frame rate of 60 (?).
When I import the films in iMovie I have been asked if I want to change to frame rate 30 (instead of 25). I have chosen 30.
Could it be the setting of a frame rate 60 in my camcorder that causes jerkiness when panning or what else?

  • Joining tracks after importing from CD

I imported a CD from a conference (hour-long) into iTunes. It came in divided into 19 sepaerate tracks. Having already imported it, how do I join the tracks so it is all one file?

Easiest way would be to reimport form the CD.
If not, you will need to use an audio to stitch them together.
Audacity will do it (google it).
