Audio equivalent of keying?

Hi, this is something I've wondered about from time to time, but I've never known how to search for it in the manual or elsewhere, so while I'm thinking of it, I thought I would ask here.
Is there an audio equivalent of keying? For example, I have a sound effect, say just a constant tone, and I want it to be inaudible, unless another sound comes in, and then the tone comes in in proportion to the levels of the second sound (or the opposite of that, so that the tone is always audible, but dissipates in proportion to the levels of any other sound that comes in). If something like this exists, what is it called? Is this something STP can do?
Oh, and a bonus question while I'm here. Probably not so hard to locate this in the manual or elsewhere if it exists (apologies to RTFM people...):
Is there a way to keyframe effects? (e.g., could I have tone shift over a duration, or have the frequency on ring shifter drift over a span of time, etc?) If so, how is that done?
Thanks much,
Matt

Bonus Answer - The same thing goes for nearly any effect, equalizers, reverb, etc.,
The additional step needed is to add the plug-in to your mixer and then view the plug-in parameters in the lower left pane. You need to check the ones you want to automate, this parameter will then show up in the envelopes for that track where you can key in your automation data.

NOTE - all of this automation can be written in real-time by adjusting the desired control on-screen, either in the lower left pane or the plug-in itself - as long as you are in touch or latch automation mode (the toggle menu at the top of the screen).

  • Audio Zoom Quick Key (like in FCP)

Still getting used to the switch from FCP to Premiere.  Overall I am impressed, but there are still a few things that make me mental with Premierre.  In FCP I can zoom in any window with the command +  and return to full view with the command z quick keys.  I know that just the + and \ works for the timeline in Premiere, but not in the source monitor. Is there any such thing like that in Premiere - especially when viewing Audio Wave Froms in the source monitor?  That little slider bar drives me nuts and waste a lot of time.  It's much quicker to just zoom in and return to full view with a key stroke like I am used to in FCP.  If anyone has a solution, I would be most greatful. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Jim for the reply.  I do know of that featuer toggeling the panel full screen, but what I am wondering is that once you do that, is there way quick key that will then allow you to zoom into the waveform like when you use the sliders at the bottom of the panel.  In FCP, i can put the play head near the spot I want and press the command + key and it will then zoom in on a frame by frame basis - much like hitting the + key in the main premiere time line.  Does that make sense?  Thanks again!

  • Trigger Animate Audio Event with Key Position

So I've got a long scrolling site that is supposed to trigger an audio event at a certain position.
Right now I've got an edge animate file in there that is set to trigger at a specific key distance, which it sort of does.
The issue is that the audio is triggered when I first load the page and then will trigger again only if I'm scrolling upwards.
The animate file has a couple alterations. The scene has an oncompletion event that says to pause the whole piece and autoplay is turned off.
I'm using Win 7 and Chrome if that makes any difference.
    Any suggestions?
If there is a more elegant solution I'm open to that as well. This just seemed to make sense with my current workflow.
    Thanks all!

You would need to achieve this using JavaScript , add a snippet on event so that on complete load video file is played :

  • Audio Feedback from Keys

For some reason I get audio feedback from any keyboard input while in Stickies. Only happens in stickies and Notes under the dashboad, as well.
It's not the keys themselves, it's actually coming from my powerbook, like a tiny tick sound, but definately not a mechanical sound; it's distinctively electronically generated.
It's hard to tell if it's coming from the speakers or not, and changing the system volume does nothing.
I've checked settings under Universal Access and every feature is off. There are no settings under Stickies or the Dashboard for any kind of audio feedback feature.
    Weird.
    Anyone else notice this?

Can you try an external microphone (connect via USB), and see if same issue occurs?  If the problem persists, then you might want to check hp.com to see if there is a newer audio driver for your model.

  • Slow down audio with quick keys

can you slow audio just a bit with a quick key to check an editing point before cutting?

Logic 9 has speed fades that achieve this very easily. Plugins like Amazing slow downer could do this.
Have you tried turning the clip into an Apple Loop which follows tempo. Then slowing down the tempo of the project?

  • Hearing Audio While Scrolling W/ Keys (or rather, Not Hearing)

OK so I am not an audio engineer or audio anything. I have a very simple project I told someone I'd help them with because ... how different could STP and FCP controls be?
All I want to do is hear the audio on the track as I push the forward and/or backward keys. In my old radio class that was called "rocking the reels" thereby hearing the audio/speech at the rate you can mentally process where a splice should go. Does STP really not offer this simple feature? I've looked everywhere and it seems like this is the case! This is madness!
Forward arrow key lets you leisurely go forward at your own pace, and back arrow key goes back? You can hear the audio this way? Seriously it's not available?
I take full responsibility for this dumb question but as I said - I don't "do audio." I am a videographer.
Also probably doesn't help that I'm on some old STP 1.1 version does it? But seriously, who doesn't offer a reel rocker? I mean heck, even FCP has that!
    Talk to me.

I don't think it's available exactly as you describe, but you can use the scrub tool, so that when you click/drag it scrubs the audio.
Arrow keys make sense in FCP, where you can only step at the frame level, but less so in STP, where you can edit at sample level, if you need to.

  • Tip for "Always On" Audio (possibly works on any Mac)

Those users who have a preamp &/or headphones connected to their Mac will notice a distinct "click" when the power is applied/removed from the audio chip, when sound is called. And there’s always a lag when it turns on. This has gone on far enough.
Here’s a very easy way to keep your sound chip from "sleeping":
With your audio editor of choice, (such as Audacity), generate 30 seconds of silence, and export as an AIFF file. Save to your preferred location, as <Silent Loop>, or something.
Open your preferred version of Quicktime Player, and open <Silent Loop>. Have the player just play the silence forever. No more clicks, because the chip is always "awake".
Add your loop to "Startup Items", and set Quicktime player to play files when opened, as the "set and forget" default.
This probably doesn't apply for audio via USB or FireWire.
Perhaps Apple could add a "never sleep" option to Sound Preferences/Output?

I suspect SoundOn is more widely compatible, since it does not use a preferencepane.
SoundOn just launched for me under osx 10.6 and stayed open. Didn't test its effectiveness (I'm not personally having a sound sleep problem).
    This technote:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20726
    includes the following (emphasis added):
In order to increase battery life, Mac OS X versions 10.1.2 through 10.1.5 turn off your computer's sound hardware when it is not used for 30 seconds. The delay in hearing sounds is the time it takes for the sound hardware to go from its low power mode to sound production.
*One way to avoid this issue is by using external USB speakers.*
Since this is a glitch that has “survived” through OS 10.6, I suppose that Apple has seen that a vast majority of users opt for USB and/or optical out, so they optimize bug-fixing “energy use” also.
Since I use QuickTime pretty regularly, and the implementation of both of those “SoundOn” apps plays silence anyway, might as well just run Apple software in the background. It shows a minimal CPU usage/RAM footprint, and I suppose it’s the audio equivalent to Preview, which I load at startup as well.

  • Any nice transitions for the *audio* ?

I'm using iMovie for the first time, so pardon my ignorance.
I have my video clips arranged, transitioned, and titled as I want. Now I have to contend with the audio portion of my project. I have three audio clips (one sampled AIFF, two purchased AAC's from my iTunes library) to go with my video, and I need smooth transitions between them. If they just play one after the other, it's the audio equivalent of a train wreck.
Can these be transitioned within iMovie somehow? If not... I have a nice freeware sound editor for the PC (ack!) to make my AIFF fade in/out, but I obviously can't use it to edit the AAC files from iTunes.
    Thanks!

    Hello Helicon and Welcome!
If you highlight your audio clip then check the edit volume box you can fade out and in easily.

  • Audio play head / playback issue

Flash CC: My audio does not continue when I resume playback.   For example I have my audio set to stream on its own layer.  If at any point I stop add an additional layer place whatever tween, key frame, content, and hit enter to resume playback.  The play head disappears and the audio restarts from key frame 1.   Once the audio catches up to the key frame I just added the play head returns and continues. or the play head will disappear and the audio will go back approximately 10-15 seconds then once the audio catches up to the area I just added edits the playhead returns.     CS6 i could stop anywhere on the timeline then hit enter the playback would begin from whatever keyframe i was on or picked to begin from.... • Audio won't play on specific videos.

I work on Amazon's Mechanical Turk. I transcribe the audio for videos for a requester called Crowdsurf. I have never had any problem with any of the videos/audio for any of the tasks, but since purchasing my new laptop I have not been able to get the audio to play for certain videos. I'm on an N580. My speakers work just fine, I am able to play songs from iTunes, Youtube, and pretty much any other source. I have tried to play the Crowdsurf videos on another computer and the audio works just fine for the videos. As the audio is the key component to completing the work, I am not sure what to do. I'm not sure what information I need to provide for help but I can do so upon request. Any suggestions? Please help!

  • Howto: best way to remove audio

Ok, so I need some help with something that seems like it should be extremely simple.  I have a video/audio clip and I need to replace the audio in 4 small sections of the larger clip.
Using the razor blade on the audio is how I am doing it now, but its so permanant (obviously) and I am afraid that if i clip too much and need to adjust in the future, I have to start all over.
I tried adjusting the audio level using key points but I couldnt get that to work.  It wants to lower the audio level gradually, whereas I need it to cut immediately.  Then come back up to normal level.
Please help.  There has to be a simpler way to do this without cutting up the audio clip into a dozen pieces.
    Thanks,
    //digital

If you do not need to do the Cuts, for the Video, you can just use Keyframes on the Audio, and can instantly drop the Volume over the course of one Frame (basically 1/30th sec.). Hint: when you go to add your Keyframes, zoom the view of the mini-Timeline way in, and set your Keyframe, then hit the cursor arrow key to advance 1 Frame, and set another Keyframe. Adjust this to the desired level of attenuation. If you are NOT zoomed in, the Keyframes will seem to be atop each other, and hard to get the cursor onto. Now, you can still use the Keyframe advance button, but it is so much easier to work in the zoomed in view, IMHO. No need to Cut the Audio.
You can still do it with the Cuts (just do it for the Audio Track - Target it), and then in the "pieces" that you wish to attenuate, drag the yellow-orange "rubberband" way down in that segment of the Clip. Hint: Show Volume Keyframes will need to be set in the Audio Track Header (should be by default).
    Good luck,

  • Audio Instrument

Hi everyone, I have a problem and thought id ask here in the hope someone can give me an answer.
How do i get the audio coming from an audio instrument track onto an audio track? From what i gather its only possible in Logic pro, but is there no way around this with the environment or bouncing (not sure how), im probably just
showing my ignorance, but id be grateful for any help/clarification. Thanks

    Hey Tom,
    Welcome to the forum!
You Bounce the track or tracks (don't forget to rename it
on the save as: otherwise you end up with a bunch of Output 1-2 files),
and select the option: Add to Audio Window, then hit Bounce, open the Audio Window; Apple key +9 and drag the file to the track you want.

  • Track audio using AIFF

Hi, I have a client who claims to be using the aiff files of his compressed mpeg2 files(from compressor) in DVD Studio Pro for track audio. The key is that he says that he never compresses the aiff files to AC3 format. I can't seem to figure out how this is possible. Is it maybe that DVDSP is automatically converting the aiff down to ac3 when he builds the DVD? It just wouldn't fit otherwise. Also, I would imagine the bitrate for running a mpeg2 at around 6mbps along with the aiff would be too much for the DVD spec.
    Any ideas?

No, DVDSP won't allow you to continue on. You will see from time to time posts here that run into that problem. They generally go something like this: "DVDSP stops in the middle of building with an error saying the bitrate is too high, what's up with that?" (forgive me for taking some liberty in the quote). What's happening is the user has aiff or wav for their audio, and somewhere in the video stream the two combined bitrates exceed the max allowed. It can be very frustrating, because it can happen anywhere in the stream, and you really have no idea where it's at. VBR encodes with DVDSP/compressor are the most notorious for putting bitrate spikes in the encode. CBR is better, but not immune. The solution is to either re-encode the video at a lower bitrate (not desirable, and takes a longer time and may or may not be low enough); or to compress the audio to ac3 (which generally gives enough 'head room' to get under the max allowed even if there are spikes).
The short answer to your question is that DVDSP won't allow you to make a non-compliant disc (based on bitrate allowances). It also is not very helpful in letting you know exactly where the problem is.

  • P35 Platinum front panel audio with Antec P180 case?

God I have a headache after reading all those "front panel audio" threads.  Why can't mb's all use the same freaking pinouts!!!!
The case doesn't have a HD front panel.
    MB pinouts are:
    1. Mic_L         (MIC Left Channel)
    2. GND
    3. MIC_R        (MIC Right Channel)
    4. PRESENCE#
    5. LINEout_R   (analog port right channel)
    6. MIC_JD       (MIC jack detect)
    7. Front_JD
    8. NC (empty)
    9. LINEout_L    (analog port left channel)
    10. LINEout_JD
Case Front Panel connector is a preconfigured block with pigtails hanging off in case it doesn't match up.
    1. MIC Signal
    2. MIC Power (MIC BIAS)
    3. Ground
    4. FPOUT-R (front right)
    5. FPOUT-L (front left)
    6. RET-R (rear right)
    7. RET-R (rear left)
glaring differences are the ground and the MIC connectors.
How do I connect these?  I don't want to fry anything.
    Thanks.

They do have the same pinouts. There are two standards is the reason for two different pinouts. It's just that your MB is Intel HD and your case is AC-97.
