Auto-mount failing with segfault on FAT drives

I've been running Arch on ThinkPads for years, just got an x240 and installed Arch on it. Everything seems to work fine except for external drives of any sort.
I'm running Gnome 3.
With my USB stick, every time I insert it, Nautilus detects it and when I attempt to view the drive it fails. Here's the dmesg output:

I never had any trouble this this before on my previous laptop (Lenovo ThinkPad E330).
Likewise, when I use TrueCrypt to mount a volume, although I don't get the stack trace, It does never shows up in Nautilus, and dmesg has the following to say about it:
[31234.534922] loop: module loaded
[31234.610930] FAT-fs (dm-5): Volume was not properly unmounted. Some data may be corrupt. Please run fsck.
I can view the drive, however, so it's not as bad as the USB stick, but still not the correct behavior. There is no automount and Nautilus does not show it in the device list.
I've tried formatting the USB stick a few different times (it needs to be FAT for compatibility) and always Arch ends up corrupting the drive and making it useless.
Anyone have any idea as to what's going on here?
Thanks
-Nick

Trying again, to manually mount the USB stick, when I insert it, dmesg shows:

I then try to mount it with:
# mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usbstick
And although the command appears to be successful, I get the following in dmesg:

A `df` does not show the mounted location, neither does Nautilus, however `mount` does.
/dev/sdb1 on /mnt/ZELENACEK type vfat (rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro)
When I attempt to unmount it:

If I take the USB stick out and plug it in to my other Arch Linux laptop, the drive mounts fine (and complains about fsck only because of the problems incurred on my main laptop). I know the USB stick is good, it's new and I've used it many times between my other machines. I'm assuming the hardware is good as it's a new laptop, I installed Arch Linux from this same USB stick without an issue. I've also used other types of USB devices, like wireless headphones, without issues.
It must be some system configuration error. Perhaps something with the kernel or system libraries that are / are not installed? lib32 issues? (it's an x86_64 install)? I don't know, I'm grasping at straws. I have read through the USB_Storage_Devices and Udisks Arch Wiki pages without any luck.
Any help is greatly appreciated as I currently can't get any large amounts data on or off this laptop easily.

  • Auto mount of USB sticks and hard drives?

    Hello.
I'd like ArchLinux to auto-mount USB sticks, hard drives, etc... when plugging them in. How do I manage to do this?
These are my daemons: DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond dbus hal ntpd alsa gdm)
    Thank you in advance.
EDIT: Somehow, autofs does not work.
And btw, I use Thunar as file manager.

You need to have gvfs and thunar-volman installed. Make sure you are a member of the storage group. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xf … le_Devices

  • Auto Mount fails on CIFS share

I have setup auto_master with the following line:
    /-    auto_direct
    I also have tested a client smb share connection with the following successfully since this node is a member of the cih-ettm windows domain;
I have also setup smbadm add-key with this users name and password so that when I mount here with the following command a password is not required.
    mount -F smbfs //chaos.cih-ettm.com/InboundImages /export/home/ttp/images
This works and I get a mount point and I can copy files to the directory and the windows box sees and can access the files.
If I try to set this up as an automount by adding the following line to /etc/auto_direct and execute the command automount I receive the error 'not owner'
    /export/home/ttp/images -fstype=smbfs,dirperms=0755,uid=ttp //chaos.cih-ettm.com/InboundImages
    Error returned:

Found out this same thing this morning. Was getting constant invalid argument errors and indeed removing "noatime" from the fstab entries fixes it. Looking at mount.cifs man page there is not only no reference to noatime but neither to relatime or anything like that.
Guess that functionality has been removed in cifs-utils? Not sure but the Wiki will need updating regardless.

  • [SOLVED]Compiling kernel fails with segfault

    Hi guys,
    I'm out of answers.
    The situation :
Compiling kernel randomly stops with : "segmentation fault" and never runs through.
Reissuing make will make it continue until it will fail at some other point.
    Background:
The system feels completely unstable to say the least, but nothing 100 % reproduceable ( vuze(java) crash, firefox/chromuim flash sites crash every 120 seconds, X crashes once a day , for instance when moving tvtime around, kernel oops daily, sometimes hard lockups, logs of yesterdays oops : http://pastie.org/private/imrqdzdbejdb3jxn4czuw )
But only the kernel compile is 100 % reproduceable so this must be fixed asap.
    Specs:
    intel e8400,nvidia gtx260, 2 G ddr2,Gigabyte EP45-UD3R, "gigs of space", off. arch kernel 2.6.33-ARCH , x86_64,  "bigtime" cooling :
cpu temps 50 C° max  during compiling
What configs/packages are important ? I got paranoid and ditched my old makgepkg.conf and used a newer *.pacnew file , I used to have  :MAKEFLAGS="-j3" but not in this config :
    http://pastie.org/private/4ryshivi2hgyqenjlkicg
    local packages:
    local/gcc 4.5.0-1 (base-devel)
        The GNU Compiler Collection
    local/gcc-libs 4.5.0-1 (base)
Runtime libraries shipped by GCC for C and C++ languages
    Anything else updated daily.
    The blowup:
    http://pastie.org/private/hoamev0sli7zapbr0xvpbq
    What I tried:
fsck -f: it fixed two inodes, but still the same behavior
badblocks -nvs : three hours of badblock testing, 0 hits
memtest : two passed runs, no errors
stress from AUR, 15 minutes :
    stress --cpu 8 --io 4 --vm 2 --vm-bytes 128M --timeout 15m
stress: info: [26841] dispatching hogs: 8 cpu, 4 io, 2 vm, 0 hdd
stress: info: [26841] successful run completed in 900s
Max coretemp was 52 C° during stress.
The usual footnote statement ^_^ :
    On w7 _everything_ runs stable.
And not only stable , I'm able to OC this box to 4.5 GHz and game under w7 without a prop for hours, well this is what it was build for at some point.
    Conclusion:
So I'd say hardware wise this box kicks ass and now software wise my Arch kicks me in the a**.
I doubt there is a faulty hardware part, but what else could it be ?

    Update:
Trying to compile another big package just to have another result, gcc itself now :
    - segfault after 4 m18 s
    - segfault after 5 m50 s
    Update²:
I think I found a faulty BIOS setting in my non-OC profile concerning DRAM termination, which said "normal" where "auto" would be correct.
My OC-profile has this setting correct and since I run this profile in Arch only it might explain that w7 did not fail.
Still have to verify this but i makes perfect sense, only gcc seems to trigger this. Compiling gcc still running with over 10 minutes in the game now.
After hitting 4.5 GHz with OC I must have reset the non OC-profile wrong.

  • Mount failed for usb3.0 pen drive on MBP Retina

I have 32GB pen drive, trying to connect it to MBP Retina.
OS version is the newest one.
Pendrive works great with Windows 7 and WD HD Live.
Tried to format pendrive with all available file systems (from Fat32, exFat, MacOS Extended) - and format works OK.
DiskUtility see the pendrive without any issues, but can not mount.
    Following error appears:
    - the disk could not be mounted. Try running First Aid on the disk and the retry mounting.
Verify Disk and Repair Disk completes without issues, but pendrive is still can not be mount.

I was having this problem with the exact same USB drive (Lexar USB 3.0 32GB) and an early 2011 Macbook pro. I tried EVERYTHING to make it work: most of the things you did including resetting the PRAM and the SMC and tried every kind of formatting (Mac Journaled, exFat, Fat32....), I tried every port on my laptop, I cleaned the contacts.... nothing worked. It was working on a friend's newer Macbook, and on my roommate's brand new windows desktop. However, on my computer It wasn't showing up in Finder or in Disk Utility no matter what I did.
I then read this comment on another forum: "Likely the problem is the USB 3.0 plug going into a USB 2.0 socket. Move it back and forth a bit and it should connect. For me this works every time."
And it works. I just have to move the USB drive slightly away from my screen and presto. I am not sure how great this is for the USB port itself but I have decided to sacrifice one USB port to using my thumb drive because I need it every day.
I too spent hours trying to resolve this and this was the solution, and it's been working for months.

  • Hibernate fails with open source radeon driver

I have set up hibernate properly and it worked on Catalyst.
Today I switched to the open source driver and I can't put my computer in hibernate or hybrid sleep mode. When I try, both of my monitors turn off then immediately turn back on with a completely blank picture. They both report that they are getting the correct mode for them. At this point my HDD led is not blinking (I'm pretty sure the HDD itself has stopped, didn't check), and the reset button is ineffective. If I forcefully power of the PC and turn it back on it boots as if nothing has happened.
I tried linux-ice and uswsusp but neither solved my problem.
Further debugging shows that this is due to KMS (booting with nomodeset lets me hibernate successfully but I'd like to run X). Using the kernel documentation's debug procedures (https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentatio … ugging.txt) I found that it happens when the kernel suspends devices. I can't really provide much more info unless you guys know how to squeeze it out of the kernel.
It's worth mentioning my GPU is an HD7970 (I can list other things if needed), and that the driver works perfectly fine otherwise. I do recall that hibernating worked at one point but I can't remember when it was broken as I first discovered the bug a few months ago after switching back from catalyst.
I found some guy on the Gentoo forums with the same issue (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7642484.html) so it might be an upstream bug in the driver. If anyone could shed some light or tell me where to report this bug in particular (kernel ? freedesktop.org ?) I'd be grateful.
    Thanks in advance.

Alright I found the culprit. Adding radeon.dpm=0 to the kernel command line lets me hibernate on the current kernel. I lose power management but it's fine for now, will definitely check things out in the source when I have time.

  • Static Tools Logo Test fails with Microsoft In-Box driver

We are running the WHCK tests on a NVMe storage device using the Microsoft In-Box stornvme.sys device driver.  The Static Tools Logo Test is included in the list of test cases to be run.
Where do we get the required DVL file for the In-box driver?
Where do we get the required DVL file for the stornvme.sys file in the HCK?  Some of the NVMe specific test cases copy a different stornvme.sys file to the test PC.

    Hi Prashant,
You have provide the DVL file of your driver and placed at C:\DVL folder. Please ask your Developer to create DVL file.

  • Auto-mount network drive?

    Hi all,
I have a Mac Pro running Leopard and a 1TB Buffalo Terastation on my home network. I am able to access with the Terastation from the Mac by going though Finder. To do so, I have to click on the name of the TS on the left side of Finder and then click on the "share" folder in the next column. This mounts the network share as /volumes/share.
This is OK but I currently have my iTunes library on the Buffalo TS. However, if my iPod is already docked before I power up the Mac, iTunes can't find its library because the share isn't mounted. I have to manually make Leopard mount the share by the procedure in the above paragraph.
Is there a way I can get the Mac to auto-mount the network share like I can under Windows or Linux? Since MacOS X is Linux based, can I use the Linux method for auto-mount the share by editing a fstab file?
Any info will be appreciated. I've tried searching and have tried a few tips but haven't got it working yet.
    Thanks,
    Steven

I'm not sure if this solution works or not, to be honest.
I've added my mounted sharepoint to my login items aswell as editing the file you described:
    MacProBU:/MacProBU x url net, automounted,url==afp://admin:admin@"AFP on Tolton2TB.afpovertcp.tcp.local/MacProBU" 0 0
MacProBU is the name of the Sharepoint and drive, once it is mounted.
AFP on Tolton2TB.afpovertcp.tcp.local/MacProBU is the location of my sharepoint when I 'Get Info' on my mounted drive.
My Network drive now seems to mount and be ready to use at login, however a Finder window now opens every time, showing my the contents of the Share.
Not too much of a problem, but a bit annoying.
I've read tons of articles about auto-mounting shares, AFP and SMB etc drives
All seem a bit mis-matched with no idea what's going on. And a lot are complaining about the removal of NetInfo in leopard.

  • Batch file from java class fails to copy from mapped drive

I've some problem for a bacth file which XCOPY several files from folder to folder. If the source folder is a mapped network drive and I run the batch it works.
But it fails with this error "Invalid drive specification" if I run it from within the java class. Everything is correct from the BATCH point of view as it works when I run it directly.
    I use Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(command);where command is: "cmd /c C:\\just_for_test.bat".
    The batch file is:
    XCOPY /E G:\tmp\CD0005_Multi\*.* C:\Temp
    RD /S /Q G:\tmp\CD0005_Multi
    EXIT
where G: is the mapped drive.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I used a batch-file to copy the specified files that looked like this in the end:
    net use s: \\192.168.200.7\e$ <passw> /USER:administrator
    s:
    COPY "S:\Temp\xxx.txt" "C:\Temp\xxx.txt"
    c:
net use s: /deleteWhat happens is that i make a new mapped-connection to the harddrive
and ending it after the copying-process is finished... Simple thingie.
But, if you still want to copy the files through your program, do this:
    net use s: \\192.168.200.7\e$ <passw> /USER:administrator
    s:
    java myProgram
    c:
    net use s: /delete

  • [SOLVED] Thunar (XFCE4) Does not Auto-mount USB Drive

After reading some posts related to USB auto-mounting in Thunar and yet still having the problem, I decided to post this. Thunar used to detect the USB drives and auto-mount them. These days (I GUESS after moving to systemd), It cannot do so. Still, there is the icon of USB drive on the left side panel, but when I click on it to browse it, I get this error:

The error looks suspiciously like one I had not so long ago and it turned out I still had an 11-media-by-label-auto-mount.rule in /etc/udev/rules.d.  Once I removed that and rebooted everything was fine again.

  • Auto Partion fails error = /dev/sda is mounted

I booted from the cd,  ran /arch/setup then began going through the setup program

I checked /mnt and its not showing anything mounted.

Or at least one of the 0's does.  can't remember for the life of me what the other means.

  • Mount(8) fails with GetMasterBlock Error 2

I am exprirencing a similar problem to those in these two threads:
    Bigtime Problems With Volume Mounts
Why isn't UUID working with the mount command/fstab in OS X Lion?
But my problem is with a volume on the local HDD, but not a USB drive. Detail information is described as follows.
My HDD has the following structure:
    System volume (mountpoint: /)
Volume 2 (default mountpoint, not in use)
    Volume 3 (mountpoint: /Vol4/Vol3)
    Volume 4 (mountpoint: /Vol4)
Volume 5 (default mountpoint, not in use)
The mountpoints are configured in /etc/fstab like this:
    UUID=<UUID_of_Volume_4>    /Vol4         hfs    auto
    UUID=<UUID_of_Volume_3>    /Vol4/Vol3    hfs    auto
After boot and login, Volume 3 is never automounted, so I have to mount it manually. However, mount(8) fails to mount it, with the prompt "GetMasterBlock: Error 2 opening UUID=<UUID_of_Volume_3>", while mount_hfs(8) and diskutil(8) do not have this problem. I need to mention that if I unmount Volume 4, I cannot mount it with mount(8), either.
In fact it does not matter which command I use when I mount manually, but it really annoys that Volume 3 is not ready after system boot and user login.
I wonder if there is any way to automount Volume 3 on boot (or on login, it makes no difference to me). Thanks.

I checked the source of mount_hfs(8) and found why mount(8) fails. The command line used by mount(8) is "mount_hfs <some options> <fs_spec> <fs_file>". If I use UUID in /etc/fstab, fs_spec will be in the format of UUID.
However, the function GetMasterBlock in mount_hfs(8) does not support this format. Since it is using open(2), it would expect a real path to device like /dev/disk0s5, and open("UUID=...", some_flag) will certainly fail with ENOENT. That is the meaning of "GetMasterBlock: Error 2 opening UUID=...".
The real mounting process in mount_hfs(8) is done by calling mount(2). mount_hfs(8) defines a variable "args" of type struct hfs_mount_args, and then sets args.fspec to "UUID=...". According to the header file hfs/hfs_mount.h, args.fspec should be the "block special device to mount". Since mounting never succeeds, I can conclude that the valid value of args.fspec should be a real path to device, but not a UUID.
    As a verification, I substituted "UUID=..." with "/dev/disk0s5" in /etc/fstab. This time mount(8) succeeded!
Err, but after I restarted my MBP, Volume 3 gets auto mounted at the default mount point, that is, /Volumes/Vol3. It seems that OS X does not respect the entry order in /etc/fstab or use mount(8) during the boot process, but uses its own mechanism (maybe diskutil(8) or something else) to mount the partitions.

  • External Hard Drive connected to AEBS does not auto mount

Just upgraded from Tiger 10.4.11 to Leopard 10.5.5. I have a AEBS running 5.3.2 airport utility with a LaCie HD connected to it.
In Tiger, my external hard drive would auto mount onto the desktop every time the computer turned on or woke up from sleeping etc.
In Leopard, my external drive will not auto mount. It does not show up in the sidebar under devices. It does not show up in the disk utility. To access it, I have to go the the finder sidebar, select my AEBS under shared, then select my HD. Also, I did check show connected servers and external disk on the desktop in the finder preferences. Also, not sure if this matters but the icon on my external drive on my desktop is the blue drive with three people holding hands and not the brighter blue one with the wireless signal logo.
In tiger my external HD basically acted like any other folder that was always there and not like a networked drive that I had to go and connect to. I want to go back to that. I heard this has to do with leopord no longer having the airdisk utility??
    thanks

Try making an alias of one of the top-level folders in your external (AEBS-connected) drive, drag it to the desktop, and then put it in your Login Items.
    --> System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items
You can simply drag the folder alias into the Login Items window.
When you next log in, the folder will be automatically opened. Alas, it doesn't give you instant access to the entire external drive, but you can back out a level to see the entire drive. It isn't quite what you had with Tiger, but perhaps it will suffice.
If you leave the aliased folder on your desktop, you have a skinny approximation to the mounted volume that you had with Tiger.
