any idea?
Tanks.

I think my disc-entry in fstab is this (OTOH):

I have seen entries where auto is replaced with 'iso9660,udf'.

  • Disable Gnome auto mount for one specific UUID

I am using Gnome 3 (gnome disk utility, udisks, udev stack i think).
I have a device (Garmin Edge 800) that I am only going to use in Virtualbox so I want to prevent it from automatically mounting in Gnome. However I want other devices to auto mount as normal so disabling auto mount entirely isn't an option.
The device got two UUIDs and previously I could write a HAL fdi policy to ignore devices with those UUIDs, but now that HAL is deprecated I am not able to figure out how to do this.

There's probably a udev config file somewhere (udev wiki perhaps) but you can do it with fstab "noauto" that's what I do for partitions I don't want to auto mount.

  • Auto Mount for the iPhone

    Hello ALL,
OK, now that I have settled into the groove and bought the Griffin elan Snap-in case. Now I am looking for an iPhone Auto Mount. So what would the group recommend for this feature and why.
Thanks in advance all, this is one fine group and of course that can only be obtained by the people who use and contribute to it!

Submit your feedback to Apple requesting such a feature here:

Personally, I hope they don't. Adding features that encourage people to talk on cell phones and drive seems like a bad idea.

  • [SOLVED] (Auto)mounting in KDE not working after switch to systemd

After I switched to systemd (everything else works fine now) I cannot mount any disk (CD/DVD/USB disk) with KDE 4.9.2.

I'm not sure I really agree with IgnorantGuru in that I used to use a script which mounted my floppy with udisk --sorry old school--and with the systemd change, I now only had to change my script back to the KISS principle of mount and umount, without udisk, to make it work.  I don't understand all the complaints about the direction arch is going.  To me it's the same as it's always been.  Arch is for competent linux users, simple as that.  If you don't want to do the work and figure it out--as best you can--on your own, then the forum is your friend.
edit: @alwaysanoob:  Recently, with the change away from consolekit to logind, check to see if your polkit.service is active as many posts are showing that the polkit upgrade is not always activated due to conflicting group id's.  I myself had this problem as polkit was trying to use group id 102 which was already taken by an old install of gdm--which I had to remove--before the polkit.service could be started properly after a reinstall of polkit

  • Auto mount/eject external drive for time machine backup/restore

I have an Iomega ultramax drive connected via firewire 800 for my Time machine backups.
This drive will automatically spin down after a period of non-use. I like this as it means lower power usage and lower risk of data loss (head crashes etc..).
My problem is, when the drive spins down like this, some file open operations pause until the drive spins up again. I cannot remember exactly which applications I have had the problem with, but I assumed that this was part of the OS. This delay can be up to 5 seconds or so and is really annoying.
Assuming this is not just a specific third party application thing. My suggestion to Apple is to do one or both of the following:
    1) Multi thread the file open dialog (process?) so that is comes up instantly, and then adds the drive when it has spun up.
    2) Modify time machine so that it can automatically mount/eject the external drive just when doing backups and restores.
Currently I have a bit of a messy work around to this problem where I have a loadd scheduled shell script that runs every hour that mounts the drive, runs time machine to backup and the ejects the drive. It works, but is not perhaps as nice a solution as it could be.
Does anybody else suffer from this problem?

Yes that is correct, the drive spins down and remains mounted.
To be perhaps clearer. The problem is not essentially a time machine problem, it is to do with whatever implements the file open capability that other apps use. In the above sitation, there is always a delay for the drive to spin up when I go to open a file (perhaps five seconds) in other applications. I assume this delay is caused by the file open process waiting until some data is retrieved from the external drive before giving me the option of choosing a file. This delay is annoying, as I do not ever want to open a file from my external drive (this is dedicated to time machine backups) when I am using pages, or any other application other than a time machine restore.
This particular issue is similar (but I suspect nowhere near as bad) as one of my pet hates about windows XP. In windows it appears that the explorer will wait for a response on all its connected drives (hard disks, mounted cds, network drives), so any sort of network connectivity or hardware delay will cause explorer to freeze. As explorer seems to be embedded in most things you do with the OS, this can cause anything or everything to freeze (web browsing, you name it).
In my setup, as I have the external drive totally dedicated to time machine backups, another thing that would fix the problem for me is the suggestion number 2 I suggested where time machine auto mounts for the backup and then ejects after the backup. With the feature, then the external drrive will only ever be mounted for short periods of time (the above problem does not ocurr if the external drive is not mounted), and when it is mounted it will be spinning, so I will never have my file open delay. I would however have a short delay when doing a time machine restore for the mount of the drive, but this is a much rarer event the using file open in all my other apps.
Thanks for the info on the feedback link, I will post this to that.

  • Stop Auto Mount of SMB Home Folder

For awhile, I tried SMB home folders for network users.  This worked poorly, so i went back to using AFP.
However, for most users, their  network home folder is now getting auto mounted by SMB at login.
I've checked WGM manager to make sure they have AFP homes and that no SMB home is assigned.
I've checked the users control panel to see if there is an automount setup there.  Nothing.
Where else could auto mount information be stored and how can I find it to wipe it out?

Normally it would be a matter of changing the server to register the AFP share as an auto mount for user home directories, then you have to use Workgroup Manager to reconfigure each user to select the new share location which should now be listed in the Home tab in Workgroup Manager.
If you only do the first step the user account will still be set to the original settings.
Is this using Open Directory and a Mac file server? The process might be more complicated if your using Windows Active Directory, and typically a Windows server does not do AFP.

  • E17 on a fresh Arch Linux + gtk apps... auto mounting and other issues

    hi all...
I have gone through the forums and found a similar but-not-quite-the-same thread about this, which is why I am posting a new thread - so, please excuse any redundancy/laziness.
As the topic says, I am making a new Arch Install, on my laptop that has/had arch+kdemod on it for quite some time now. I have now tarred that old install and put it on my desktop that has more RAM than this lappy. So I went with a minimalist approach - after googling for long, I managed to put together something that takes up about 350 MB RAM, when running the desktop, firefox, mplayer, openoffice, two or three terminals, and conky - which is all pretty good. But I am having some teething troubles in many issues, so any help in the following is most appreciated.
    My set-up and the problems....
WM - e17, from the repos (I tried, but could not get the easy_e17 script to work properly)
    FM - emelfm2
            - I am not able to get my USBs, CDs, DVDs etc to mount automagically. I have HAL from the repos. This is my fstab.
    /dev/cdrom             /media/cd   auto    ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
    /dev/dvd               /media/dvd  auto    ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
    #/dev/fd0               /media/fl   auto    user,noauto             0      0
This setup gave me no trouble at all when using Arch-Kdemod. Now I have to be root to mount from the command line, and can not auto mount cd/dvd/USBs.
E17 file manager enabled is also no help.
    browser - firefox, dillo
    terminal - mrxvt
    editor - leafpad
    audio - mpd + sonata
    video - gmplayer
    sys monitor - conky
cd/dvd burner - recorder, from the repos
    Openoffice, PSPP for statistics
    Pidgin
    Wengophone2
at the moment I am behind a proxy and haven't yet tried it, but can anyone confirm it is still working...?
    epdfview
    chmsee
    rtorrent
    feh, exhibit
    dreamchess
That is the whole setup, in case it helps someone.
Thanks for reading, and waiting for suggestions about the auto mount issue.

    hi all...
    Thanks for the replies.
@fingel... That udev rules addition on the wiki gave me the jitters initially as it looked like I was hacking away at my systems innards, BUT, after trying everything else, including things mentioned here, nothing worked. So I finally did the udev thing, and now the USB is mounting fine.
However I still cannot get DVDs or CDs to mount. I am added to the optical group, and yet I have to click the mount icon in emelfm2 to be able to mount the CD or DVD - the only consolation is that I am able to mount it as normal user.
Any help there....? I haven't modified anything from the usual install, except for this udev thingy.
And, How can I make the mrxvt terminal show me more lines on scrolling up. Now it is allowing me to scroll up only by 10 lines or so, and I am having to pipe through less to be able to view anything meaningful in commands like yaourt -Ss

  • Exort Slideshow for DVD project

Hi, I have made several slideshows in Aperture 3.1.1 which I now want to burn on a DVD.
I'm having problems figuring out which export option to use.
HD wouldn't work as DVDs are SD by definition, so would probably loose a lot of quality in compression through DVD Studio Pro.
Ideally, I would like a lossless option, so I can convert it in MPEG-2 my self and then burn it.
But Aperture only uses H.264(which is not great) AND MPEG-4, which I'm not very familiar with
Any suggestions on what is the best option for DVD?

    Hi lindy4
Does it play well on Apple's DVD Player App on your mac computer?
That's the recommended approach on this forum.....namely to make a disc image first from the File menu within iDVD which is created on the Hard Drive. From there you may wish to use apple's Disc Utilities (or Roxio Toast) and burn the image to Verbatim /Maxell DVD-R media at 4 x or slower (slower is better).
Side note: Use Apple's DVD Player app (and not iDVD's Preview function) to actually test playback prior to burning to DVD-R.
    Hope this Helps

  • No auto mount of NTFS partititions

    Hi All,
I'm a newbie Arch user, few weeks ago I successfully installed Arch x64 + KDE4 on my desktop (dual boot with Windows 7). Earlier all the NTFS partitions were auto mounted on boot but now after booting into the desktop, I get the following error in Dolphin when I try to access any NTFS partition:
An error occured while accessing 'Disk', the system responded: org.freedesktop.UDisks.Error.PermissionDenied: Not Authorized
Once I provide the admin password and manually mount the partitions, then I'm able to access the partitions.
Please advise on how can I make auto-mounting of NTFS partitions work.

Use fstab to mount internal stuff at boot. (and make sure to have ntfs-3g installed)

  • Working auto-mount?

    Hi all,
I have a xfce4 desktop installed. I want an automount service. I tried autoFS, with the following settings:
    auto.master
    /media /etc/autofs/auto.custom --timeout=15
    auto.custom
    disc -fstype=auto,ro,nodev,nosuid :/dev/cdrom
    Backup -fstype=auto,user,rw,async,umask=000,gid=users,noatime,nodiratime :/dev/disk/by-uuid/f569bba5-8007-40f5-8b3c-36960c5796d5
    ## Backup -fstype=ext4,user,rw,async,umask=000,gid=users,noatime,nodiratime :/dev/disk/by-uuid/f569bba5-8007-40f5-8b3c-36960c5796d5
    Shared -fstype=ntfs-3g,user,rw,async,umask=000,gid=users,noatime,nodiratime :/d ev/disk/by-uuid/565AF3085AF2E421
    ReaderCard -fstype=vfat,flush,user,rw,async,umask=000,gid=users,noatime,nodirat
    ime :/dev/disk/by-uuid/0102-0304
    ##ReaderInt -fstype=auto,async,nodev,nosuid,umask=000,gid=users :
    ## Other medium here
    # floppy -fstype=auto,async,nodev,nosuid,umask=000 :/dev/fl
The files are formatted following the instructions. The partition Backup, however, does not come up ("no such file or directory", even when root).
Backup is ext4 and it's kept on an external hard drive, the same of Shared. Mounting it manually works. I have tried with simpler options (as simple as
    Backup -fstype=auto :/dev/disk/by-uuid/f569bba5-8007-40f5-8b3c-36960c5796d5
with no results. Autofs won't do.
As an alternative I have tried xfce volume manager, but that doesn't work with ANY external device.
    Please help. Thank you.

That would be a solution - if it worked. I tried that too. The Arch wiki just glances on the setup, solving the whole question with a one liner "Thunar-volman's automount doesn't work currently because of the hal to udev switch, Sept 2010"
The section on udev is obscure, mentioning to check policykit to "properly start your session".
However the policykit page is also obscure, containing no mention about starting X session properly or even improperly for what matters.
The default setting produces no result at all.
Nowhere I was able to find a five-lines working example of set up. I have used Linux daily since 2000 (and I know it should not take more than 5 line explanation to setup an auto-mount).
I am really embittered by this interpretation of "the arch way". The documentation on certain core tools such as policykit is completely insufficient and the defaults do not solve basic problems (hours to set up a basic auto-mount? incomplete wiki pages referring each other?).
Arch could be a perfect desktop distribution with just a pinch of attention to put the obvious features, when correctly disabled by default, at easy reach through complete examples. (Shutdown buttons? Same story: one line reference to policykit, dbus and other 10 tools with not the barest explanation about how to use them in synergy for the purpose. Result? Manual shutdown for the moment).
If you could provide a working setup for thunar volume manager I'll be happy to use and add it to the wiki.
    Thank you.

  • Permission err mounting blank DVD in finder, works fine in other apps

Hi I have an intel Mac Mini running OSX 10.4.9 fully patched.
I can not mount a blank DVD disk in the finder, if I insert one I get the following error message: "The operation could not be completed because you do not have enough access privileges".
Blank DVDs work fine with iDVD. Non blank DVDs also work just fine for playing movies or reading data.
I have tried repairing permissions with both Disk Utility and Onyx, neither makes any difference.
I have logged in as System Administrator (root) and the blank DVD works exactly as it is supposed to and I can create data disks.
So it seems like I really do have a permission problem, but not one that is fixed by Disk Utility.
    Anyone have any ideas?
Mac Mini (intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

This error is listed several times in discussions archived issues. The solution is always the same: trash com.apple.finder.plist from your home /Library /Preferences. I hope it works for you but as for me, that is impossible. The com.apple.finder.plist DOES NOT EXIST!!! By the way, I noticed this error and also the error "No mountable file system" when trying to open any disk image immediately after Software Updates took me to 10.4.9 and it occurs in other admin users also, so it is not a user issue for me.

If it gets far enough to reject your serial number, it won't help to download it. It must have installed ok.
What is the message you get (DON'T tell us the serial number!!)?
Does it mention a "qualifying product" by any chance?

I updated my software as "recommended" and my optical output is not working anymore to my receiver and thus no surround sound. My HDMI to the TV still provides the picture and sound to the TV. My receiver only uses optical and was fine BEFORE the software was updated. How can I go back to the prior software or fix this? My Apple TV is the earlier 720P version. I have tried restarting on the Apple TV and then unplugging and reinserting all plugs to no avail. It provides no optical sound on Netflix, Youtube and other selections but does via HDMI only to the tinny TV speakers. ANY IDEAS?

GO to your Dolby Digital settings, and toggle the options.. Auto, On, Off. That worked for me, and a few other people.
