Auto re positioning of unselected photos on timeline

I have several photos on my timeline that I am trying to sync with an audio file.  However, when I grab the edge of one of the photos to make it's time shorter, the photos downstream from it are following along and consequently do not stay where I want them in relation to the audio.  Can this auto repositioning be avoided?

R Boone
What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
For now I will generalize....
Try holding down the Ctrl key of the computer main keyboard as you grab the edge of one of the photos to make it's time shorter.
Please let us know if that works for you.
Thanks.

How do you auto tone a group of photos. I tried command a to select all and then auto tone but it only did one Photo. I troes several times and yes all photos were selected

In Develop you can highlight a group of thumbnails in the filmstrip, then right-click and choose Develop Settings -> Auto Tone
In Library you can highlight a group of thumbnails in the Grid and click the Auto Tone button in the Quick Develop area.
What you can’t do is click the Auto button in Develop and have it do more than one photo—this is by design, except, maybe if you have Auto Sync enabled.

  • Photos in timeline of imovie 6.0.3 aren't the right length

I have worked in iMovie for years and never had this problem. iMovie 6.0.3 on OS 10.5.8. When I import photos into timeline 5 seconds each they don't change at 5 seconds. They run random lengths, 2,5 8 seconds and don't change photos when they are supposed to in the time line. Help, I have a project due soon and can't figure it out. I have rebooted, started a whole new project, even tried only 2 photos in a new movie...nothing

  • Photos in Timeline and Ken Burns Effect (Motion Control)

I'd like to check my processes for setting photos with the Ken Burns Effect. I've used Tom's Motion Control example to set Ken Burns Effect on two or more photos that are next to each other in the timeline. I have found that if the photos are approximately the same pixel size that it works well. When they are significantly different I still see the second pic holding still for a few frames and then the movement.
So, I'm interested in other experiences. Did you also find that the relative size of the photos makes a difference? And, when you have photos that are significantly diff in size, what process do you use to bring them closer together?
    Thanks,
    dave

    Hi David,
I think the problem you are having is similar to one that I was encountering while finishing a project a few weeks ago. I also was using photos of differing sizes, but the issue with the late start on the "Ken Burns Effect" on the second photo wasn't related to the differing photo sizes, but to the transition I used between the images.
I found that when I applied Motion to a photo using keyframes, the motion looked fine on both images until I applied a cross dissolve in between images. I realized that the cross dissolve is looking for frames before the motion keyframe to blend with the previous photo. Since the frames before the keyframe are "generated" (I'm not sure if that's the correct word) from the first frame of the still (which has no motion) it generates 15 frames (for a 1 second cross dissolve) that are not moving. That makes it appear like it's stuck and then starts moving when the playhead hits the motion keyframe.
My solution was to move the still photo clips (one at a time) up one video track, extend both ends 15 frames and set the motion keyframe at the "new" beginning of the clip and the "new" end and do my motion based on that new clip length. I then brought in both ends back to their original positions and dropped the clip back into its original spot and then applied the cross dissolve. Now the cross dissolve would have 15 frames with motion to work with for blending the two pictures.
It was incredibly tedious, but I had to do it because the images made up a large part of the video project I was working on. If anyone can suggest a better way of doing it, I would greatly appreciate it.
Despite the time involved, I was really happy with the final results.
    I hope that helps.

  • Print Module: Auto-Rotate to fit and Photo Info Text

When in the print module with "Auto-Rotate to fit" selected, A landscape images correctly rotates to fit the page, but the text that is selected in the "Photo Info" setting does not rotate. Thus, the text appears along the left side of the image .
Any suggestions to get it to appear correctly on the bottom?
Also, Font size is selectable but not font type.

  • How do you easily move the position of a photo in an album?

Want to move a photo from the last position in an album to the first. Tried cut paste/tried drag/havent found the answer. Thanks, photogranny

In albums (not smart albums) you simply select the album in the source pane on the left and drag the photos where you want them in the view window on the right

  • Can't drag photos into timeline

I opened a new project with the widescreen setting and can't load photos onto the timeline. They act like they are loading, show up as a blip on the timeline, then disappear. The same photos work on a standard non widescreen project, but not here. Audio imports fine. Any ideas?

Though i think it's a shame, because I film quite tightly so often only have the amount of clip that I need.
You don't really loose much if anything. You only need to move the in on one and the out on the next 15 frames for a one second transition. Plus the 30 frames are not gone, they are part of the transition and can be seen, depending on the type of transition.

  • FCP7  -1920 x 1080 photo  mismatch timeline issue

I have DSLR still photos shot at 1920x1080 (16:9)  ratio
Photoshop confirms the dimensions-- and also square pixels. (72dpi)
    If I create a timeline in FCP7   choosing  a 1920 x 1080   preset (HDTV)...
---when I place the photo on the timeline--   it does not fit the frame.  Black bars on each side.
So , my quesiton is   --Why?   the dimensions are the same----  so I think it should fill the frame perfectly.
To further confound the situation -- If I create a colored test jpeg in photoshop 1920 x 1080 (square pixels  72 dpi)  and drop that in the FCP7 timeline-- it fills the  frame perfectly.
So my 1920x1080 DSLR stills and my 1920x1080 test photoshop jpeg  (identical specs as far as I can see...)  behave differently in FCP7....
    Any help appreciated.

Click on one of your imported pictures in the FCP browser, and once selected, type Command + 9 to see the properties for the clip. Either report those properties here or take a screen shot and post the screen shot of the item properties here.
Next, click anywhere on you sequence timeline, and then type Command + 0 {zero} to see the Sequence Settings. Either report the Sequence Settings here or take a screen shot and post the screen shot of the Sequence Settings here.

Does this mean the actual pixel dimensions are not 1920 x 1080, but are in the 16x9 ratio?
FCP7 has a limit of dealing with still images - they can be no wider than 4000 px in the widest dimension.

  • Positioning of next photo in OPEN-List.  Permanent setting of thumbnail.

    Hello,
Can you avoid that when opening the list of photos always is set to the beginning instead of showing the position of the last photo that has been edited..That makes it easier to scroll for the next photo in a long list.
Can you change permanetly from detail view to thumbnail view?
    Regards,
    Michael

    Hi Brett,
    -          I imagined this as well that OS XP in “Folder Options / View /
Apply to All Folders” may set Thumbnail for all other Views in programs,
e.g., Elements. But it doesn’t. Any time I have set it in OS, the View in
Elements, when opening a folder, still is displayed in “Detail”.
    -          I never was lucky that Elements remembered the last file I was
looking at. It always jumped back to the beginning of the photo-file-list
when I was looking for the next photo to be opened with FILE-OPEN.

  • Losing quality when bringing photos into timeline?

I am having a major problem with a stop motion project that I am working on. I have imported a folder worth of high quality photos into Final Cut, and when the photos are opened in the Viewer window, the photos appear to be very high quality, as they should. However, when they are put in the timeline, there's a very noticeable loss in quality, and they are also cropped slightly. I have gone through quite a few Sequence Presets, and none of them seem to change the appearance in the slightest. I have invested quite a bit of time in this project so far. Please help!

    polamalu wrote:
I have no doubt I will lose quality along the way. I am also confident that I can preserve enough quality that your average viewer will not notice much of a difference in quality if at all. Certainly in motion the photos will not look the same, but even when the stills are frozen on the canvas the quality is poor. What settings will provide the best quality for the final product? I will not be able to use blue ray.
You seem to be thinking the computer or the software must be at fault. Your images are undergoing a reduction in quality that amounts to entire order of magnitude, a factor of 10. You will never put pack what is being lost or be able to create an illusion of fidelity. When you go to the Web, as you indicate later in the thread, your images will be reduced in quality and pixel density by another order of magnitude,70-90% of the already reduced information will be discarded in the form of averaging and reduction of the tonal range to web-safe CLUT.

  • Cant add transitions or Photos to timeline in FCPX v10.0.9

Edited a 6 min video made of 40+ photos with 2 audio tracks, 4 titles effects, etc. Was working fine, was able to transitions but then I all of a sudden I can no longer add anything, I cant drag photos into the timeline, nothing.
PS the I was redoing the project becuase the ngiht before it crashed when exporting and I had to force quit. When I rebooted the app it only had the version when I first started. I am really getting frustrated with the App.
    Any assistance please.
    ( I am using Macbook Pro 13"/ 4gb ram / 10.7.5 OS )

Yesterday when I went to export the same project that I created yesterday and lost, it crashed when exporting but when I force quit and restarted it had 1/10% of the original finished project, it never saved or lost all the last files.
Over the time I've used FCPX, I've had a lot of unusual things happen…but I've never lost any content or edits because of failure to update the BU file. If this ever happens again, replace the Currentversion with the renamed BU file with the app closed. Then reopen.
And as Tom indicated, increasing RAM is a good idea,

  • Premier Elements 12, Inserting Photos into timeline, using transitions, inserting music

I have just recently switched from Premier Elements 8 to 12, after discovering that "expert" looked allot more like what I was used to I have been able to start a new project. However, I don't consider myself to be an "expert".
That said I have a few questions:
I used to be able to insert photos and rearrange them in the "sceneline", I do not see that feature in Premier 12 so am using the "timeline" that is there. However I cannot insert photos or move them around easily, I get my clips reducing in size. How can I insert new photos or move them?
Transitions seemed to have been reduced greatly in the availabilty of them, have they "gone out of favor", I had put a transition inbetween all of my clips in my previous projects with 8. Allot of them were merely the "wipe" feature. What is recommended with 12?
I have not gotten to adding music to this project however have noticed that there are allot of different styles available. However I want to be able to add my own music, can you give me tips on "how to do that", would I just go to the "add media" and get them off my computer and than add it to the audio line?
    Thank you ahead of time.

I am not sure why these photos should be reducing in size. It should be the same thing as in your older version, that is, as you hold down the Alt key of the computer main keyboard, with your mouse cursor drag you new file into place in the Timeline. Some people like to use the Ctrl key instead of the Alt key. I prefer the Alt key.
I prefer the Expert workspace rather than the Quick in version 12, but you can still move the images in the Quick Filmstrip spaces with a click and drag, left or right as appropriate. So, I am not sure what you ran into in the Quick workspace in that regard.

There are lots of Transitions under theTransition Tab when you are in Expert workspace, much less in the Quick workspace. This is what you should be seeing in version 12/Expert workspace/Transitions
This is what you had in version 8.0/8.0.1 under Wipes in Timeline view.

Same as before. Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets (if Expert workspace). The Quick workspace does not have that "intermediate" Project Assets. So, it is Add Media/Files and Folders/ and direct to a scene space in the Filmstrip. If you  have iTunes music, it may have to be converted to .mp3 or .wav (again same as before).
However, if you are a SmartSound soundtrack user, the SmartSound feature is gone in version 12 which has it counterpart, under Audio Tab, of Music Scores and Sound Effects which end up on the Timeline as .wav files. If you have the old SmartSound soundtracks, they need to be converted to .wav and then the Premiere Elements 12 Add Media/

  • Auto-Stack by interval BETWEEN photos

    Hi,
I want the auto-stack feature to pick up the shots that I take in a burst, regardless of the shutter speed that they are taken at. At the moment the auto-stack seems to check the time-difference between the capture time of the photos; this is useful to a degree, but I would prefer a method where the time-difference in calculated between the end of one photo and the beginning of the next -
e.g. "[Capture time of photo 2] - ([capture time of photo 1] + shutter speed)" < specified auto-stack time
This would allow me to stack all shots that are taken in a burst, regardless of the actual shutter speed. This woulkd mean that low-light HDR bursts with AEB which result in shutter speeds of up to 30s would stack correctly, and be seperate to the next HDR burst even if it started 1 second later!
    Gary

However I find the capture time of photos in any one stack exceed 1 minute!!  For instance, these are the capture times of photos in a single stack:
         8:19:12PM, 8:19:25PM, 8:19:43PM, 8:20:24PM, 8:21:19PM, 8:21:45PM
This is a maximum interval setting.  It has nothing to do with the total timespan of the whole sequence. Just, how closely-spaced the individual shots  were. These were less than half a minute apart.
IOW: how long can pass between one shot and the following one, before that is no longer considered to be part of the same continuing sequence.

  • How do I make the photos in timeline the same timeframe?

I have finished my movie and I have a ton of photos and they are 10 -14 secs long... to long.  They are all different.  How can I make them all the same time?  How can I figure out exactly how much time each of them is also?
    Thank you,
    Valorie

The easiest would have been to set the desired Duration, prior to Import, via Edit>Preferences>General, but that will not help you now.
For a change in the Duration of the stills, assuming that you will want everything to follow along with your changes, Click on the Tail of each image in the Timeline and drag to the left. The cursor will turn into a big ] with a double arrow. Open the Info Panel (Window>Info) and watch the Duration change to what you want. I would expand the Timeline horizontally to have fine adjustments. Repeat.
    Good luck,

  • Dragging photos to timeline

A strange thing happens when I try to drag a photo (from within iMovie 6, not iPhoto). When you select a photo to put into the timeline, (most of the time)I can't see the photo in the main viewing area (I don't remember the correct term for it, browser?). Also, when I click the "See photo settings" to set the time length and/or change the size of the photo (zoom in or out) the photo will not show up in the viewing area, it is just black but I can adjust the time & zoom, just blindly . . .
I've restarted iMovie & it seems to have the same issue. I will try another project to make sure it isn't just the one particular project that has problems. I recently updated iMovie 6 to 6.0.4(?) and it was having the problems before it and I was hoping the update would have fixed it. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

I have had the same problem since upgrading to 10.5.8. Happens sporadically. What I do is drag the photo into the timeline and work on it from there.
