Autocomplete slow

G'day
When one keys in a partial tag, one can press CTRL-SPACE to complete the tag, eg typing:
<cffuCTRL-SPACE
will complete the <cffunction> tag. Cool.
However it takes CFB about 1-1.5sec to actually react to this, during which time if one keeps typing, the tag is never completed.  And to be frank, I could have simply typed the rest of the tag name in less time than that.  So using this feature makes for very stilted development.
I would expect to be able to type this - at full speed without any pausing for CFB to work out what it needs to do:
<cffuCTRL-SPACEnCTRL-SPACEmyFunctionRIGHT-ARROW acCTRL-SPACE puCTRL-SPACE RIGHT-ARROWoCTRL-SPACEfaCTRL-SPACE RIGHT-ARROW hiCTRL-SPACEHere's my hint
and end up with:
<cffunction name="myFunction" access="public" output="false" hint="Here's my hint">
However I just get this:
<cffu n myFunction ac pu o fa hi Here's my hint
(or something like that, you get my drift).
Are other people finding this tag too?  I don't think my machine is under-spec'ed for the task here... it's quite happily running Open BlueDragon, CF9, MySQL (+ MySQL Manager and Query Browser), Tomcat, Apache, Firefox, Skype... [etc] simultaneously, and none of them seem to be slow.
Another thing related to this (kinda).  I have "automatically insert single proposals" (or whatever it is) switched on, which is quite handy.  However when I type in:
<cfsavCTRL-SPACE
I might expect to get this as a result:
<cfsavecontent variable="|">
(Where the | is the cursor).  Because <cfsavecontent> has only the one attribute option, and it's required.  It'd be good if CFB was savvy enough to grasp this.
Comment?
Adam

Isn't that just the delay for the automatic code completion?  I mean as opposed to triggering the code completion with CTRL-SPACE as I am doing.
It's difficult to tell, but I guess it could be slightly faster when I decrease the setting from 2500 to 100.  Although it could be because I am editing  amuch smaller file than I was last week.
However I am uncertain about this remedy because it's certainly not taking 2.5sec to do the completion when I press CTRL-SPACE, so I do not see the connection between the setting value and the delay here.  Plus it makes no sense to add a delay there anyhow: it makes sense before anything happens automatically (and it drives me up the wall when CFB tries to help me when I type without me asking it to); but it makes no sense for there to be a delay after I've explicitly keyed CTRL-SPACE to tell CFB "complete this please".
I guess once I get back to my project work (in the larger files), I'll pay more attention to the completion speed.
Cheers for your suggestion though!
Adam

  • Iphone mail: contact autocomplete slow

    Hi,
When I write an email, the autocomplete takes ages to find results in the address book. Like around 15 seconds.
This happens apparently when mail is called by another app, like safari for instance.
But if I start Mail directly, I don't have the issue.
There are around 456 contacts in th address book. Starting the Contact app isn't slow at all.
Anybody has the same issue ?
    Phil

Yes  I started having the same problem.  I can quit email, restart, and then try to send an email directly from MAIL and I still get the problem.  It always was instant before but no longer.  Makes me think that some kind of index that allowed fast search is broken so it is doing a live search now...

  • Address autocomplete slowed to a crawl

About a week ago, auto completion of address fields in mail.app suddenly slowed to a crawl. If I slow down enough in typing that mail.app starts to search (i.e. puts up the spinning cursor in the field) it often takes several seconds to regain control, and sometimes as long as 30 seconds to a minute.
Up till now, this had been working great. Any thoughts on this? Is there any index I can rebuild?

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Does searching in Address Book itself or searching for contacts in Spotlight work fine?
Do you have an LDAP server configured in Mail > Preferences > Composing > Automatically complete addresses or in Address Book > Preferences > LDAP?
You may also open /Applications/Utilities/Directory Access, turn OFF LDAP in the Services pane, click Apply, and see whether that makes a difference.

  • Address autocomplete too slow since the program updated to version 31. I went through all the troubleshooting tips and it still is slow.

I had this same issue with Seamonkey. I have about 4700 names in my address book. When replying to an email, or creating a new email, the auto email lookup function is very slow and unresponsive. It will generally take 10-20 seconds before it starts to work. Since the update to ver 31, now all my collected email addresses are coming up all red color. It is like all history is gone. It doesn't recognize that these email addresses are in my address book or something...thank you.

The spurious red addresses is a known bug:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1012002
while the slow operation of autocomplete is probably due to a new feature, that may become a bug:

  • Autocomplete under 31 is slow

    Hello,
    Slow autocomplete for addresses
Under Windows 7 Professional (up to date)
The new version of autocomplete takes longer and gives me a longer list containing more addresses I'm not looking for adding more time to find the correct one.
Like this thread https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1011952, except I don't have even 1000 addresses.
It is not extremely slow is is just significantly slower than the old version of autocomplete and gets many more false positives by searching the entire address.
I tried the solution from the above thread, using the latest version (0.6.11.2) and it failed to install "MoreFunctionsForAddressBook could not be installed because it is not compatible with Thunderbird 31.0"
I searched the forums and didn't find any other solutions but could have missed something. Any other options?
As far as I can tell this isn't an error it just the way the new autocomplete works.
    Thanks
    ----->Luke
    Example:
Type "ma" under v30 I got
    "Margaret"
    "Mark"
    "Matt"
Type "ma" under v31 I get
    "Freeman"
    "Maior"
    "Margaret"
    ...

Hi, autocompletion has changed a lot in TB31. Now it doesn't match anymore on equal strings, but it searches if the typed string is contained in any of your email addresses. It doesn't only check the display name and email address, but also some other fields. Also if you type more words all the words are checked separately. Unfortunately there is no way to change this behavior yet.

  • Autocompletion on console slow

    G'day,
for the last few days my beloved autocompletion on the console - whether it is on xterm, konsole or yakuake, or even a vterm accessed via ALT+CTRL+F2 - freezes up for several seconds whenever there is more than one possible hit.
So, if I want to edit a file named test.txt while there is also a test.html in the same directory using yakuake I type
    nano test.
and hit TAB twice the terminal freezed up for ten, maybe twenty seconds before I get a result. The rest of my machine is usable just fine in the meantime...
ANY idea what that could be?

In all frankness I have no clue. I never changed anything about it, so whatever comes as a standard with Arch?
That being said, how do I start a debug shell that way?

  • Autocomplete suggests my user ID and date of birth on the log in page of my savings account - how do I stop this?

For the most part autocomplete is really helpful. However, when I log in to my savings account, my user ID and DOB are suggested, allowing anyone on my PC to view my account (a security code is required to carry out any transactions which does not appear to be autocompleted!) - how can I switch this off please? This has started since I reset Firefox (due to slowness, as recommended by Firefox). Thanks.

Thank you jscher2000: all fixed now!

  • Getting Podcast to appear in Autocomplete for Store Search

My podcast has been approved and is live in the Store. However, it is not showing in the autocomplete while searching. If I search submit the search anyway it finds it. Any idea on how I can get my title to be included in the search autocomplete?
    Thank you,

The image is correctly referenced, and there is indeed an image at that URL: oddly, it doesn't appear when viewing the feed in FireFox, which it normally would.
The only thing I noticed is that the image was fairly slow to load - not disastrously so, but sometimes slow loading can cause the Store to give up when checking the image.
Apple are now saying the image should be 1400 x 1400, though I wouldn't have thought it would have rejected the image for being less. You could try making a new image to that size - give it a different filename or the Store won't know it's changed - and see whether that helps: it will take a week or so to appear (assuming it does). You may have just fallen over one of the Store's irritating sticky patches.

  • Keyword delays and autocomplete competition

I am seeing two regular problems with keywording:
    1) When I commit to my keywords by hitting Return or Tab, it sometimes accepts them immediately, but much more frequently freezes up giving me the beachball of death for an extended period of time. In the most recent case, it took 47 seconds to save the new keywords added to an already-keyworded image. I'd added about 10-15 more to an image that already had a similar number. I've tried new images with no keywords, images with existing keywords, and can't find what predicts when this happens, but it happens most of the time. iMac G5 1.8GHz with 1Gb RAM so not high spec, but this isn't where the program should be slow.
    2) When typing keywords, Lightroom helpfully tries to autocomplete for you. However, there are two unexpected things to this behaviour. I am a fast and accurate touch typist (c 100 words/minute) and it seems something in the autocomplete algorithm is loosing my keystrokes. I frequently notice that when it is trying to suggest autocomplete words it either looses a letter from the keyword I am trying to type, or much more frequently transposes two of my letters. This does not happen when I am tying anywhere else so I am convinced it is not my typing. Also, I'm pretty sure the usual behaviour with autocomplete on the Mac (e.g. in Microsoft Word) is that if an autocomplete suggestion comes up you can hit Return to accept it... in Lightroom, if you do this, it thinks you're wanting to finalise your keywords... which even worse, then activates Problem #1 most of the time. You shouldn't have to move over to the arrow keys to accept an autocomplete suggestion: while it is autocompleting, can we please have it accept Return as a confirmation?

    Hi Duncan,
With regards to problem 1, please see my thread here :
    http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc33210/11
All I can say is "hoorah"; there's finally someone else with enough keywords to have hit on the problem. I think that we'll see more and more people hit on this problem as LR gets used more intensively. It's frustrating since I tried very hard to bring the problem to the attention of the engineers during the beta, but I don't think that there were enough people experiencing it for it to be noticed. It sould seem that most people are intensive keyworders.
The behaviour is very simple - adding a new keyword is very, very slow when you already have lots of them. I have over 1000 keywords so far, and adding a new one takes 10 to 15 seconds.
When the keyword that you're adding to an image already exists in the database, the delay doesn't occur.
I'm desperate for this issue to be fixed.
    Tim

  • Mavericks-made my computer so slow I cant use it!!

Question, my mac is virtually useless since Apple did an update to Mavericks, their operating system. It takes me 5 minutes to type a sentence because i get the spinny wheel.I can't open programs only one at a time or it is super super slow. Even when i do open a program it takes forever to do anything. I keep getting the spinny whel. For instance, it has taken me 15 minutes to type this because the words to not come right away, the spinny wheel for about 30 seconds and then they all come at once. I brought itinto the mac store and they said you have 2 slots of memory each containing 2 gb a total of 4 which was fine until they updated their OS. They told my computer is fine but I need more memory now. I do not see how this is my issue and why I have to buy more memory. Shouldn't apple take care of this issue so many people are having a problem with!!!???!!!  Anyways, I can barely use my computer or type anything because it takes to long. Apple does not sell or put in memory for you. They told me to go to crucial.com and buy two 4GB to put in the slots. That would be $92.00 for both. i dont think that is too bad but was wondering if anyone has found a solution. I have done all the clean ups and trouble shooting Here is the link to my apple info and memory site http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/viewscanbyid.aspx?id=BF297C0D31D926C3
Please let me know if there is a solution or if I just have to now buy more memory because Apple did this!  It is driving me mad!!!

Yes, I have done this before I will post for you!

  • Autocomplete in 31 is Fatal

Besides the fact that autocomplete in 31 has become very slow and almost unusable, there is a deeper issue.
This has happened 3 or 4 times now.
When I type just one letter into the address field, and wait for a moment, Thunderbird goes into a hard hang. If I click or try to type, it goes white-out screen.
Requires a Thunderbird restart using Task Manager.

  • Mavericks is making my computer run slow

Since I updated my Mavericks my computer is running slow. I have done all the tricks. I brought it into the mac store and they said I have 55% free memory but I get the spinning wheel of death when i try typing it takes forever. Programs dont open or they take forever. Never had this issue until I updated Mavericks. I can applejack, did the shift control option hold power and the option command-p-r hold power. repaired disks, cleaned out system caches, re-installed osx?? What is the next step. apple said "well it may just be mavericks sorry! You may just need to buy more memory even though it says you have plenty." I'll type a few words and the spinny wheel comes up and the words don't appear on the page until about 30 seconds later. Any tricks, advice etc. Tey told me to go to this website http://www.crucial.com  and to install two 4 gb in the slots instead of the 2 gb I have in each slot. For stroage, under about this mac it says i have 163.18 out of GB of 319.21 GB free.  Thank you so much

  • Earlier this year I've received a update that slowed FireFox to a crawl...I receive notices on FireFox's uppermost browser bar.."(firefox not responding)"

I have a Gateway GT5058 AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 200GHzw 1.37 GB Ram this computer should be able to handle things well enough! And yes...I have multipul windows open all the time...but my 850 Ghz PIII handles multipul windows with excellence! I'd like to revert back to a previous version..... This browser reminds me of the 80's 486 days! SLOW!!!!!!!!!!

    # Yes, if you go to accounts.firefox.org, sign out, you will now be signed out.
    # Sign back in, and you will be asked to save the password you entered.
    # This will save the password and autocomplete if you have this option turned on.
I am not exactly sure why the menu did not detect the password change or if it was stored incorrectly after you changed it? But after storing the correct password you can manage any duplicate passwords in the password manager.[[Password manager - Remember, delete and change saved passwords in Firefox]]

  • Application running slow in ver 1.5, 1.6 but not in 1.4

We have a application that was running very slow when we used any version sun java instead of MS java in IE6 SP2.
I removed MS Java from IE and installed Sun java 1.4.2_16 and the applications starts in under 10sec's.
But we had to test the other version of java as well, i then installed the other versions from 1.5 update 14 to 1.6 update 4 and the application takes about 30 to 40 sec to load the web page.
I then looked at the development version of java 1.6 update 10 and version 7. In 1.6 update 10 the application would load but would not refresh the applets it would just hang. In version 7 the application would not start up at all.
In all the versions i increased the memory parmeters from 128 to 256 and in version 1.6 i changed it to -Xmx300m as well but still the application was slow loading. Removed all the versions and reinstalled 1.4.2_14 and the application works fine and loads up under 10 sec.
Does any one have any idea why this is happening.
    IE 6 sp2
    XP sp2 been used.

You should try profiling the startup code.
As a first go around, you might try getting a stack trace during the startup process and look for locks (see jstack).
If your application is built on Swing, it's my understanding that the later versions of Java are more strict about use of the Event Dispatch Thread--pay particular attention to activity off the EDT locking the thread.

  • Mid 2011 Macbook Air Painfully slow.

Mid 2011 Macbook Air Painfully slow.
Hey everyone.  I am writing about my 13 inch Mid 2011 Macbook Air.
Recently it has been extremely slow and on occasion has not started up.
I have reset the PRAM and SMC already, yet it is still very slow.  I have a couple theories about what might have caused it, are they plausible?
Theory 1:  It’s a software problem. I tried to upgrade to 10.8.2 but halfway through the upgrade the computer restarted and somehow I was still on 10.8.1.  For fear of a big issue happening I didn’t try to upgrade again. Perhaps it is a flaw in Apple’s software update?
The important thing to note about this update is that I tried to install 10.8.2 around a month or two weeks BEFORE I started having problems.  So if these issues were due to 10.8.2’s failed update then it certainly was a delayed reaction.
I would of course like to update to 10.8.2 BUT as my computer is acting EXTREMELY slow and having trouble turning on occasionally I am worried the software update will completely brick the machine.  Is that possible?  Should I actually finish through with the software update?
Theory 2:  It was an electricity problem.
The computer died when I was sitting at a café plugged into their wall sockets.  A few days later when I came back to the same spot with my old macbook which is now being used in lieu of the Air it suddenly turned black for a little while. Sensing it might be an electricity surge or something with their system I unplugged the cable.  I am not sure if that was paranoia though.
Can an electricity surge or a bad outlet fry a computer?  Can it fry the ram so the computer is extremely slow? Does that theory hold any water?
Thanks for your help diagnosing this problem.
    All the best.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.
