Automatic Graphics Switching turns itself off

I have a mid 2012 model Macbook Pro (non retina). Its got the Nvidia GT650m and is running Mavericks. I will turn on Automatic Graphics Switching in System Preferences, but then next time I think to check it (which is often the next day, after the computer has been shut down for the night), it will be unchecked. This is really annoying due to the decrease in battery life. Anything I can do to make my selection stick?

See this app:

Using this to stay on integrated on battery makes a world of a difference in runtime.

  • Windows 8 automatic update keeps turning itself off

My windows 8 automatic update alert to turn it on keeps alerting me that it needs to be turned on,( the little flag to go to action center with the red background and white cross..)
so i go to action center and change the setting from automatic updates off to on (recommended) automatic update, yet maybe 30 mins later it pops up again to tell me its off and  needs setting to turn on automatic updates.
I would like to leave it set at the recommended setting , but for some reason it reverts back to off, after some time, even after rebooting etc.
Please help, could it have anything to do with the new bit defender i have purchased or the fact that i have not been able to trust this pc? as i did a system refresh only days before i installed bit defender .
so yeh also having trouble trusting my pc?? ive signed in so many times i give up trying to follow the prompts, as i don't really keep passwords etc on my pc i was not so worried about that but it could be this that caused this prob, or the fact i haven't
updated to win 8.1, the reason i did not update to win 8.1 was because the new system created two accounts for me n my wife , and i did not wish to have such and it was just a nightmare so i uninstalled it along with many other reasons ive now forgot, but
it was not user friendly for my purposes in sharing a laptop with my wife.
any help would be appreciated in layman's terms as i am not really a wizard on these computers.
    Thank you

Some AV and or malware programs will do this. I'd try a clean boot to test.

  • Set date and time automatically keeping turning itself off?

Every time I go to the App Store I get a pop-up stating that it can't connect and that this may be caused by an incorrect date and time setting.  I go to Settings and discover that "Set Automatically" has somehow turned itself off.  I can turn it back on and then access the App Store.  Until the next time.  When the whole problem starts over.  Why won't it stay on Set Automatically?  Thanks.

Try this first. Reboot your iPad.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If that doesn't work, you can reset all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all Settings. That will turn all of the settings back to factory defaults and you will have to enter them again. You will not lose any data.
You can also try restoring from a backup - if you have a recent backup. The backup contains the device settings and that just might work. It worked for me when I was experiencing the very same problem that you are having.

  • HELP! Macbook Pro lag with automatic graphics switching

    Hi people,
My macbook pro (2010 edition) recently got laggy. I have no idea whether it is because I installed too many applications or if a hidden application is eating into my RAM. When I turn off the automatics graphics switching to the more powerful Nvidia graphics card, the lagging disappears completely. However, with the switching turned on, lagging occurs in just about every function I use, whether it is to check Microsoft Entourage email, surf safari, or scroll along my dock. The lag is not significant, but many less than a half second of freezing and then resuming. Videos streamed online become more laggy.
This did not happen before, although I vaguely remember having the automatic graphics switching turned on perpetually when I first bought my MBP as an energy saving measure.
Does anyone experience this same problem with the graphics switching. Looking for serious help. If not, I think I might try restoring my MBP to its factory settings and see if that helps.
I updated all software on OS X, running on 4gig ram. I am not sure if it is a memory problem because of the graphic switching situation I mentioned earlier.
    Somebody help me.

    Thanks Clinton,
I had a funny feeling that would be my only option. It becomes very difficult in my part of the world to get to an Apple store (the nearest one is nearly 2 hours away).
I would love to find out what the cause is and possible remedies.
Although far from convenient this maybe my only option.
    Thanks for you help.
If anyone else has experienced similar issues and already received advice after a trip to the Apple store I would be interested to know more about your experiences / possible solutions.
    Regards,
    Phil

  • IPhone won't stop trying to turn itself off

My iPhone has been acting very strange recently. Try's to turn itself off randomly, well fade in and out real fast so I don't go on it for the time being. And if I touch my lock button once it will automatically try to turn itself off again. How do I get rid of this

    1. Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
    2. Restore using iTunes, also restoring a backup
    3. Restore as new, without using a backup
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
    4. If restoring as new doesn't help, there is a hardware problem that needs evaluation by Apple or an Apple authorized service provider.

  • Turning off automatic graphics switching to only allow Intel HD 3000?

I am trying to configure automatic graphics switching so that it will only ever use the Intel HD 3000 for every single application, and not turn on the the higher end graphics unless I specifically tell it to. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

As far as I can determine if you switch auto-switching off in Energy Saver preferences, then the computer will default to the high performance graphics.
The only possible solution I've come across is this.

  • Retina Macbook Pro Graphics Jittery and worse with graphic switching turned off

I recently updated my computer I've been running Mountain Lion since it was available. But recently I performed the apple updates (which I don't think had anything to do with graphics) and suddenly everything is jittery, choppy and freaking out. I could be wrong but just suddenly the other day everything was super choppy.
Turning off "Automatic Graphics Switching" actually makes it every MORE jittery and choppy. I have to keep it on otherise I cannot even scroll a webpage with out the jittery making it impossible to see anything until I stop scrolling.
I notice the choppness when using expose, switching desktops, sometimes when scrolling in Google Chrome (Definately when the AGS is turned off), going into full screen app mode, and my top bar lags and you can see it flash when it refreshes itself.
I've tried clearing my PRAM with no luck and also tried an SMC reset, again with no luck.
Any thoughts? This is incredibly annoying!

I was able to fix the graphics by the following:
    Creating a time machine backup
creating a bootable Mountain lion SD Memory card (I didn't have a USB sick available)
    Booted into the recorvery manager
    Erased the disk
reinstalled Mountain lion from the SD Card
Imported my data from Time machine. IMPORTANT: I didn't included any settings or "other settings" I just moved ONLY apps and files
My desktop appeared to be just as it was before, all apps and everything in the correct place (Go Time machine!)
    Programs with issues after re-install:
AutoCAD 2013 for mac had some folder issue, AutoDesk had a workaround (I just uninstalled it, I don't use it much)
Virtual Box running a Windows 7 install completely crapped out (I never wanted to use Windows on my Mac anyways)
Mail app had to re-initialize, but all settings and account information was saved. Just had to wait for it to download the all the emails from my accounts again
That's all I found so far! I'm glad to have the screen animations back to felling like butter. Makes me love my Mac all over again!

  • Has anyone with sprint have time/date issues as well as imessage function automatically turning itself off?

has anyone with sprint had time/date issues as well as imessage function automatically turn itself off?

Im having the same problem, I updated my Iphone 4S to 6.1.3, shortly after that my phone had no audio. It was working fine one minute and then stopped. Was listening to music when sound gave out on me. It wont ring, phone just vibrates even after turning off vibration option. I've tried all the options listed and nothing. My phone has never been jailbroken either. If I connect the earphones is works perfectly. On one of my last calls received, phone's ringtone was heard for about 2 seconds before muting and just vibrating. Ringtone sounded perfect, speakers did not sound damaged.
What else could be done? I've read several post regarding this and it seems like Apple has no solution to this yet. Very dissappointed.

  • My iPod touch turns itself off automatically

I got my iPod touch 2G 16GB this Monday and it reacts strangely when it plays music or video using the speaker, it turns itself off automatically. Is it because of the low battery? Or anything else?

it might be because of the battery, or it could just be that it is putting itself in "sleep" mode, if that is what has happened it will "wake" when you push the hold or the home button. but im not sure this is just a guess. what happens when you push one of the buttons after it has shut down? does it continue to play the music once it has turned off?

  • IPad 1: Failed sync then it turned itself off/can't switch back on

I tried to sync my iPad 1 in iTunes but got a message saying it wasn't possible (I've synced on this computer many times before and my iPad was working fine before). Then my iPad turned itself off.  I've tried charging etc but can't turn it back on.

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • 10.6.7 update changed desktop image blue Automatic Graphics Switching OFF

Desktop image changes to default blue whenever you Untick Automatic graphics switching or starting cs4 or other graphics application that uses the AMD graphics or high performance graphics card. Will not change to any other image until you retick the automatic graphics switching. Could be a fault or just Apples way of saying your now using the more powerfull graphics card HOWEVER when you switch back or Tick Auto Graphics Switching it does NOT revert to the image you had.
Anyone else experiencing this since 10.6.7 update.

(Oops, time expired on editing my previous post while I had breakfast with the kids.)
Apple's OS Installer seems picky about which disks it will install onto. It seems to require a disk with an active version of the OS. I've never been able to use Apple's Installer to put OS X onto a blank external Firewire drive, for instance. I'm not sure if it will update any external FW drive, though I can't say that's for certain. I expect the same limitation may be true for attached USB2 drives. Panther installers were picky this way too.
What I'm looking for is a clear explanation of what Apple's Installer needs to see to make the red exclamation mark go away. It has a very concrete idea about what's an acceptable target drive. Unfortunately, not knowing exactly what it's looking for, I'm at a disadvantage to give it what it wants.
I'm nearly to the point of calling AppleCare. It seems a bit ridiculous that I'm having so much trouble getting the OS Installer put the original OS that came with my CD-Mini onto my CD-Mini's hard drive. But maybe there's a trick to it I just haven't tried yet.
BTW, I was using this CD-Mini almost exclusively as a media player below my plasma TV. I'd like to be able to watch some EyeTV recorded shows this week. Right now this CD-Mini is little more than a paperweight due to lack of a workable OS.
    Thanks again.

  • N97 Mini: Automatically turns itself off or freeze...

It's about a month and a half old. The sim card is new and overall the phone works great. It's just that when I'm listening to music it would turn itself off for no reason at all.
What is Ph. setup? Because that app runs whenever my phone acts up.
    Thanks guys!

Lauren, Not sure what the problem is, however, this problem hopefully will be solved with Win 10. This audio problem has been going on for years with no end in site! Ham123 ps: good luck with your audio

  • PowerBook G4 turns itself off automatically

I found a PowerBook G4 in my closet, so I turned it on and was using it just fine, and then without warning it turned itself off. When I boot it up I can hear an internal fan running, and it keeps running the entire time the computer is turned on. I'm not sure which OS it's running. Do I need to replace the fan, or is it something worse?

I had the same problem with my MacBook Pro. What I found out is that your battery needs to be charged above 20%. Plug your computer in, let it charge for half and hour, and try turning it on again.

  • Mountain Lion, Automatic Graphics switching not working.

I have noticed when upgraded to Mountain Lion that my automatic graphics switching is not working as i would expect ..When i start Chrome my discrete graphics Intel 3000 turned off and all i get is AMD HD grapchics without using any graphic intense proccess please help here is my screen shots :
1: as you will see i have 1 tap open and nothing on the background except ACM
2: after 10 minutes writing on this post
         PLEASE HELP.

I'm not sure that the dialog box indicates which graphics are currently being used?
Also, you have Google Chrome running.  It's possible that Chrome invokes the discrete GPU... they acknowledged they had some code in Chrome that was activating the GPU and actually causing kernel panics on the new Retina MacBook Pros recently...

  • IMac turned itself off and won't fully turn back on

My iMac turned itself off this morning; all I was doing was typing, nothing intensive. It wouldn't turn back on.
I first got a wired keyboard and mouse and tried resetting the SMC. No success.
Next I took out and put back in the RAM (and it was unplugged). After repeatedly pressing the power button, I got a single beep out of it. I personally don't think it was high enough of a pitch, but I read that it might've been because the computer didn't read any RAM.
I might've again taken the RAM out, this time also unplugged. After more repeated pressing, the fans came on, but then dead again.
The third time, the fans came on and half of the dong played, but it was cut off.
The forth time the dong fully played, but a second after, it turned off again.
All of these times involved unplugging the computer for a few seconds and then repeatedly pressing the power button; I might've taken the RAM out all of the times too, but I don't remember now.
Two or so weeks ago, I did have a kernal panic while I was editing in iPhoto, and I believe it's the first for my iMac. About a month and a half ago I had a graphics problem where using exposé to show all windows caused the whole screen to become jagged 'shards' of colour (it reminded me of broken pieces of glass). While a restart fixed both of these problems, the graphic problems are not new for this iMac (though I had never had the shard effect before).
Two more little things that I'm unsure if they're related: last night, it turned itself on from sleep, but it does this every other night, so I don't think last night's special; and every time I got it to turn on, I felt that I had to give the power button just a short burst of force, as if holding it for even half a second wouldn't get it to turn on.
Does this sound like the logic board, or less expensively, the power supply? Since it attempts to come on here and there but gets cut off, what does that say with respect to the logic board?
The computer turned one year in August 08, and there's no AppleCare. Even though the warranty's gone, would Apple have any negative view if I opened it up to get my HDD? I can get the screen off with three house suction cups; my HDD was last backed up four days ago, and of course, I had just typed about 3000 words for a story I'm working on between last night and this morning.
And lastly, if I make an appointment with the Apple Store (two hours from here...) and they want to take it in, will they take out my HDD right there and give it to me if I don't take it out? Four days is so tremendous in this situation. I will not part with my HDD.

Perhaps. While I guess they're certified, I still trust Apple the most. Also, if it is a logic board problem, and it is widespread, hopefully this could be free. I don't know how a reseller would handle such a situation. I just want a file off my HDD!
I can confirm that it never really powers on unless it's been unplugged for at least a few seconds. So far, the longer it's been unplugged, the longer it stayed on. There were hours between the times I almost got into my account, and then the login window.
I again switched the MacBook and iMac's RAM, but doing this makes a senseless result. The MB's light simply stays on (no fans or screen, but when I turn it off, I do hear it 'de-whir'), and the iMac just quickly turns on and then off, as it has been after a 5-30 second unplugging session.
I guess this is the rebellion of a Revision A machine.
