Automatic Wireless Detection and Connection

Hi, I'm trying to get my laptop + arch to work so that I can walk into any hotspot and simply type "/etc/rc.d/network restart" and it will eventually connect via dhcp.  First: I apologize if this issue has been beaten to death, but I swear, I did a lot of searching and can't find an obvious or clean source for this functionality.
I've just set up network profiles, which work great, but so far the best method I've found for connecting to 'random' access points, like various libraries, university buildings, and coffee shops, is to scan and then manually put that ID as my 'preferred' ID into a dhcp-enabled wireless profile.  I remember this being so much simpler in the other distros I used - even with gentoo it would automatically do all of this for me in a pretty straightforward fashion, so I just assumed there would be something similar available in arch.  If not, would it be difficult to simply borrow part of gentoo's scripts?

Forget about new network scripts or anything like that. Ubuntu and a number of the popular distros use NetworkManager and I have been using it under Arch and KDE with knetworkmanager. It works both for wired and wireless. So when you plugin a wired network it automatically detects that too.
Here's the Wiki entry:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Networkmanager
It shows you how to use it under KDE and Gnome. As it mentions you need a combination of dhcdbd, networkmanager and hal.
P.S. Don't waste your time with wifi-radar. It's not as good of a solution as networkmanager and it only works for wireless devices.
Great, but is there a non-GUI solution? I think I may prefer the new scripts

    You can try:
    - reset:
    Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
    button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off an then backon your router

  • Airport Express as an end point on a wireless network and connect a computer via the ethernet port?

    Can I use my Airport Express as an end point on a wireless network and connect a computer via the ethernet port? - I'm wanting to connect a computer that does not have wireless and is in another building.

    The requirements for this to work are:
    1) The AirPort Express must be the 802.11"n" version. Model Number is A1264
    2) There must be adequate wireless signal stength where the Express will be located
    3) The Express must be configured to "join" the wireless network with the option checked to activate the Ethernet port

  • Recently moved and installed ATT DLS - I use their wireless router and connectted my airport express - Now I'm getting the Blue ? on some images

    Recently moved and installed ATT DLS - I use their wireless router and connectted my airport express - Now I'm getting the Blue ? on some images - and at times - videos don't load.  I've increased / deleted Cache.  Suggestions? Misconfig?  Could it be possible my configuration from MacBook to router isn't correct?
    Thanks!

    JG,
    Thanks for the info.
    Couple of questions. I found an apple support document on this topic that opened with this line:
    "AirPort Express and all AirPort Extreme base stations can use WDS. Earlier AirPort base stations can't."
    If the TC is an airport extreme base station, why can't this work to extend the network? I think I misunderstand. Here is the full article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2044?viewlocale=en_US
    If I buy a new airport extreme, set it to wireless-n only as my main router, am I correct that my existing time capsule could be used as a bridge if plugged in upstairs?
    Final question (and that should do it), could I take this old airport express, plug it in upstairs using the ethernet connection, and just create a separate wireless network to use with a different name?
    I'd like to keep one network if possible but just kicking around short term solutions.
    Thanks again.

  • Wired airport express to extend wireless network and connect network printer?

    Is it possible to configure and connect an Airport Express via ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme base station in order to extend wireless network AND connect a network printer to it?  Here's the deal...The Airport Extreme is directly connected to my DSL modem and the wireless network is working fine in my house, but, the signal does not reach my detached studio/office.  I have a Cat5e cable (and phone line, more on this later) run between the two locations and trimmed out.  I would like to have wireless access and connect my network printer (Brother HL-2170W, wireless or wired) in my studio, be able to use printer from house also, and still have wireless access in house.
    So, ethernet connection from Extreme to Express, USB from Express to Printer, wireless access for all users.  Can anyone talk me through how to (re)configure the Express to do this?  Do I need to make changes to Extreme configuration also?

    Yes. Apple's instructions for this are here:

    Instead of a second AirPort Extreme as illustrated, you will be using the AirPort Express.

  • Satellite L650 Wireless disconnects and connection can't be recovered

    Hello everybody,
    I have a connectivity problem with my 3 years old Satellite L650, Windows 7...
    I have a wireless LAN in my house, to which my laptop automatically connects at startup, with no problems.
    Some time afterwards (it may be minutes or hours) it loses the signal and disconnects.
    This isn't a real problem, since the router is quite far away, with walls in between that may reduce the signal, so no surprises.
    But I cannot reconnect afterwards: the connection status tray icon stops working.
    I mean that it shows the image corresponding to "available wifi connections" or to "connected but without internet access", but neither clicking the icon or moving the mouse cursor over it gives any result... it is responseless, and I cannot connect to my wifi or any other wireless network.
    I tried doing it from the control panel - network and sharing center, but the story is the same, both "setup a new connection or network" and "connect to a network" doesn't react when clicked.
    The only way to connect is restart the pc.
    How can I resolve this?
    Any suggestion is appreciated,
    thank you!

    >The only way to connect is restart the pc.
    In case this issue would repeat again, try to refresh and renew the IP address.
    Go to console (in search type CMD)
    Now use the command: ipconfig /renew
    After that try to connect to the Wlan again.
    In case this would not be helpful, I would recommend changing the router settings.
    I mean you should reset the router. Then you should test the Wlan connectivity with different kind of Wlan protection and different Wlan standard (802.11 B G or N)
    Test also the notebook with open Wlan. I mean you should disable the encryption in the router settings. But do that just only for testing purposes.
    The Wlan should be always secured.

  • Can I have wired and wireless simultaneously - and connect via another Mac?

    Here's my problem: My eMac (Feb 2005 running Leopard 10.5.8) is great except that it drops the ethernet cable internet every 15 minutes or so. "Sleep and wake" and I'm back on the internet for another 10-20 minutes, but this is not a long-term solution.
    OK so I say that I will get a D-Link wireless USB adapter for the eMac (it has bluetooth, but not WiFi). Fine, except then the D-Link DIR-635 router that sends the WiFi signal is too far away and too weak. But I have another computer to which I can plug-in the Ethernet CABLE. Can I then connect the eMac via a wireless (airport) sharing? NOTE: At this time the ISP Modem goes to a DIR-635 router (a wired and wireless router) and the cable goes up 2 flights of stairs to the eMac. I'd plan to then plug-in the PBG4-12" to the cable instead of the eMac; and then connect the eMac via wireless sharing if that is possible. (The PBG4 does NOT drop the signal via wired ethernet - it is a problem with the eMac not the cable or router).
    BUT then how to print? My MP640 printer is set-up for wired printing only right now. And for a number of reasons, I really want to keep it on wired (not wireless)-- I use this with another computer etc. etc. and wired gives me more selections for printing...
    Any comments on this possibility and then I'll reply with comments and/or ideas-- THANKS!
    Best regards,
    Steve Schulte

    If you use two routers then you should have the main one (connected to modem) as the official router. The second one should be configured to extend the existing network (you will need to consult its manual to find out how that's done.) If you try using two routers independently, then they will tend to interfere with each other because both are trying to deliver IP numbers on the network. So if the printer ends up on the secondary router then a machine connected to the main router may not be able to connect to the printer.

  • Wireless On and Connected, But Can't Do Anything

    The Wireless connection is through a Wireless-G router.  Everything seems ok, I have no problems connecting to it through my Gateway Tablet/Laptop.  But when I try to open up a website, or open up a internet based communication program, I can't get anything to happen.  Its like the connection is on, but nothing will happen or work through the internet.
    I've tried resetting the router, and pulling the power for a few seconds, and plugging it back in, but that hasn't worked.  I've messed with the firewalls, but that has had no success either.  I am on the main computer in the house right now, and the internet connection is just fine on here, but just can't do anything with the Net on my laptop.
    Anybody have an idea as to what could be the problem?  Cuz im just vexed over the whole situation.

    when i try to go to a webpage...it just appears as though it is not connected, when in fact, my computer is "connected" to the wireless router.  just won't do anything.  no error message or anything.  and there isn't like a low activity message either.

  • Imac wifi detection and connection issues

    I'm trying to connect to my wifi network through my Imac.  When it is first turned on it does not connect, but will detect the network and will connect to it.  Then it will disconnect for no reason and will not detect the network anymore.
    Are there any downloads to fix this bug??

    DonJose,
    You may want to reset your modem and router and while you are at it check to see if your router has the most up-to-date firmware from the router mfg. You will need to refer to your router's manual for that utility.
    Next do some basics, first is change the DNS settings, your ISP may be your problem. Click DNS Settings Update to learn how.
    Next I'd recommend resetting your IP address by renewing the DHCP lease, here is an article that explains how, please click Renew a DHCP Lease in Mac OS X for instructions.

  • Wireless active and connected before login

    Hi,
    I have been trying to get wireless connected before I login into my Mac in order to be autheticated by Active Directory.
    As the MAC didn't come with an integrated LAN port i am only able to use the wireless connection.
    Thank you

    I'm trying to figure this out as well. I may have another step in the solution for you.
    In the network preference pane of system preferences click on Airport on the left.
    Click Advanced...
    Click on 802.1x at the top.
    Click the plus sign and then click Add Login Window Profile.
    This should allow you to create a 802.1x profile that will pre-authenticate with your Directory Service. (I'm working with Active Directory) I have left the username and password blank in the profile so that the user will be the one authenticating.
    My problem now is that it seems to pre-authenticate 802.1x for me but it says that the server's certificate is invalid. If I set 802.1x up for an individual user I can 'Always Trust' the certificate but I don't know how to do it at login.
    I'm testing this on a MacBook running 10.5.6

  • Automatic resolution detection and css loading

    Hi,
    Does anybody know if automatic detection of screen resolution is possible so that different css files may be loaded for different scree sizes. I'm trying to do this using javascript, but haven't had much luck. If you have any suggestions, do post here. I'm using an external script that has the below code:
    if(screen.width >= 2560)
    <link href = "./screen.css" rel = "stylesheet" type = "text/css">
    else if((screen.width >= 1680) && (screen.width <2560)
    <link href = "./screen1680/screen1680.css" rel = "stylesheet" type = "text/css">
    else
    Toolbar.finalWidth = 700;
    <link href = "./screen800/screen800.css" rel = "stylesheet" type = "text/css">
    Is there something that I'm missing?
    Having this file in my theme folder automatically loads it, I can see this when I Debug using Safari. Do I have to modify the xsl as well to include this script?

    I suppose I could, but I'd prefer to at least have a working hypothesis first before changing things around.  Noone out there knows how this auto vid detection works?

  • WRT110 Wireless - Unable to detect signal/connection.

    Recently lost connectivity to an existing wireless connection that I had configured months ago.  Both XP laptop connecting with Dell Wireless WLAN Card and Wii box will no longer connect or detect signal.  Oddly, wireless connection showed up momentarily after resetting power on router but then disappeared. I connect fine through wired connection and laptop detects all my neighbors SSIDs.  All lights on router are lit...but no wireless signal.  I even attached a USB wireless device to my desktop pc to test.  It detected all the neighbors SSIDs but not mine.  Same with laptop.
    Troubleshooting steps I performed:
    ------Router------
    Cycled power.
    Held reset button.
    Upgraded Linksys firmware to 1.0.5
    Changed configuration to Enable SSID Broadcast
    ------Laptop------
    Upgraded Dell WLAN card driver from vA17 4.170.5 to vA22 4.170.77.18
    Disabled Dell Wireless utility and enabled Windows Wireless configuration.  Neither Dell Utility or Windows Wireless detected my wireless signal.  Both will detect AND connect to neighbor's open connection.
    Appreciate any insight or other troubleshooting suggestions.
