Automatically push clips in timeline when a clip length is edited

I am just learning FCP so please excuse the noobieness
First a little walkthrough of what I am working with.
I have three clips in my browser each are 5 minutes long.
Clip A
Clip B
Clip C
There will be no transidtions just hard cuts from one clip to the next.
I drag each clip to the timeline one after the other all in V1
I decide I want to change my out point on Clip B so I double click it in the timeline and it opens in the viewer.
In the viewer I go to where I want my new Mark Out and set that Mark Out.
The clip changes in the timeline.
There is now a gap between Clip B and Clip C.
I Command Click "Close Gap" and Clip C moves to the end of Clip B.
THIS WORKS GREAT.
Now the question.
If I want to edit the mark out of clip B again to make it a little longer I get an error of "Media Limit on V1"
This is obviously due to there being Clip C in the way of the frames I want to add.
If I manually move Clip C  further away from Clip B freeing up space and then re-attempt to change the Mark Out of Clip B it works fine and extends the endpoint of the clip in the timeline. I can then manually remove the gap and Clip C is again at the new end of Clip B.
This is a pain in the ***.
Is there a preference setting that when I change the mark out in Clip B in will automatically push all clips beyond clip B in the timeline far enough to allow for the new frames in clip B?

Exactly wahat I needed. Thank you!

  • Master clip effects applied when replacing clip into after effects?

    Hi Guys,
Love the new Master Clip effects in Premiere 2014 but im wondering what happens to the effects if I replace the clip in my timeline into an After Effects clip? Will the effects applied to the master clip be disabled for that new AE clip ?
    Best,
    Patrick

    Hi,
Which effect are you trying to apply?
Are you making subclips before applying the effect on the Master clip?
You can apply the effect on the Master clip and then make subclips from it. It will work for you.
Please refer the link below for more info:-

    Thank you.

  • Clip Label and Name not automatically updating in the timeline

I just finished a major project, so now it's time to take the plunge and upgrade Premiere. So far, it's going well, but clip labels and names aren't automatically updating in the timeline when I change them in the bin. Is that something that only works on new projects (rather than old projects updated in this new version)? Or...?

Go to the menu File > Project Settings > General and when the Project Pane opens, check the box for "Display the project items name and label color for all instances"

  • Can`t left click and drag clip into timeline..Need advice

Can`t left click and drag clip into timeline, or drag clips around in timeline.
Can insert into timeline from Source Window but can't drag from source window.
Can cut and paste within timeline.
Restarting cs5 doesn`t help, but restarting computer solves problem for a while.
Tried many mouses, but that didn`t help.
Have no idea how I got the name OLD PRO, must have been drinking champagne years ago, because I am a bumbler par excellence!

Thank you so much for asking
In the Project Panel a left click highlights the asset but ignores the drag.
In the timeline, a left click highlights the panel and when I try to drag it gives a flicker but that's all.
I can cut and paste in the timeline.
A restart of CS5 has no effect. Restarting the computer solves the problem for a while.
    Four different mouses--same problem.

  • Adjust end of clip and move all other clips accordingly

having found this help topic about trimming clips: Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Trimming clips, i figured i might be able to figure out how to adjust the end of a clip and move all subsequent media content accordingly.
the situation would be: adding a word to dialogue, cutting out a word, something like that -- where you have to shorten or lengthen a clip, and you need to move all subsequent content accordingly.
i used to know the name of the folks that did the study in the late 90's regarding help file "readability," which then resulted in the trend that help files don't offer the ability to dig deeper into the definitions of a software's vocabulary, but i forgot.
    at any rate:
i don't know what the blue thing is called with which one moves around on adobe's timeline.
now, i'm assuming i'll be able to dig that up.
but i have a series of graphics -- and i want to move adjust the length of time graphic1 appears (let's say extend it's length). i'd like to "bump" or "move" or "ripple," or "roll," or "regular edit," the graphic so that -- when i move the right side of the graphic -- all subsequent graphics get "bumped" to the right (later in time).
while i appreciate the alliteration of regular ripple and rolling edits, i did need to try them out to see what they do.
and none of them appear to "bump" all subsequent content.
i gather that i could "lasso" all of the subsequent content and nudge it and/or move it around -- but really -- i'd like to be in clip 19 -- adjust when that clip ends -- and move all subsequent content either later or earlier in time -- accordingly.
ideally that "desire" would extent into: i am just going to move visual content, and "i am going to move visual and audio content."
please have compassion for my "negative" tone, because i am having a bit of a "losing faith in humanity" moment right now - because i took about a 5 year break from tech and am now returning to tech -- and i expected user procedures to have improved.
i'll be OK and will likely blog about it, but for now: can you either tell me some keyboard shortcuts or direct me to help files or just explain -- how to edit the various types of content in premiere the way i've outlined?
i want to move all of the subsequent content over to the right. i do not want to just move the end of the last clip and the start of the next clip -- keeping the end of the next clip in the same place (which is apparently what the red double double arrow does).
i seem to have tried out "regular, ripple, and roll," and maybe i'm almost there -- or one of those methods actually works -- but the word that is coming to mind is "bump."
    bump or nudge or adjust...
    anyway -- got any tips?

hey Michael, your reply helps restore my faith in your humanity -- but seriously -- i need to use the "ripple delete tool" to NOT delete -- but extend and push?
    really?
that is as obnoxious as going to the start button to shut down.
how about going to the shut down button to start? how about that Bill Gates.
and we still can't tell the difference between a lowercase l and an uppercase I online. Good job humanity. Sometimes even the 1 is the same as l and I  -- so you have 1lI  all looking the same.
My 8 year old daughter thought I live in LLLinois? She was trying to read Illinois.
Of course I have to go to "delete" to extend. What else? I have to go to start to shut down.
ps --- that is why humanity has gone through the effort to call those thingies on doors: handles. See a handle can be used to open AND close a door.
it is not the "close knob" it is the "door knob." why? because you can use it to open and close.
it is not the on/off button -- though some call it that -- it is the "power" button.
You go through the effort to create vocabulary that makes sense if you are going to create and sell software. I understand that sometimes it can be hard, but there are plenty of people, myself included, who have the intellectual capacity -- to find or create these kinds of cohesive procedural flows -- to a large extent due to our linguistic abilities.
it's not rocket science, but it is, in a particular way -- quite difficult. it requires mental effort or some kind of "capacity," to realize that a "handle" often moves us between two or even more states -- like: open and closed.
that is why we do not call it the "on" button.
what does my HP printer have? oh it has an "on" button.
    dumb dumb dumb dumb
    more dumb
and then -- i am even accosted with dumb -- from adobe?
like awesome software industry standard adobe?
like "we made PDF files" adobe?
    are you serious?
ugh -- ok i will go to "delete" to NOT delete and extend
i don't even care what that yellow thing is called anymore. i am just going to press command and click and get this project done for now...

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CC Timeline automatically zooms in when moving clips around

This is an issue that keeps happening. It has been an ongoing problem with Premiere Pro CC and now 2014.1. It would start after working for a while on a project and become more frequent as the project gets larger. The only way to rectify the problem is restarting the computer. I would be working and I go to drag a clip around on the timeline and the timeline will automatically zoom in and thus place the clip in the wrong location. This happens when I am not holding down any keys. It will continue to zoom in every time I move any clips on the timeline and once it starts it happens on all sequences. While restarting the computer seems to help I have to do that 5 or more times in a day which can be very frustrating. It doesn't seem to be related to any OS, computer, hard drive/storage. Deleting preview files, flushing PRAM, trashing preferences doesn't help either. I usually work with Quicktime files AppleProRes Codec or H.264. Any help or insight into this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Here is a video that demonstrates the bug:
Premiere Pro Version: Every version from 7.0.0 to 8.1
OS Version: Every version of Mavricks and Yosemite including version 10.10.1
The footage I most use is H.264 and ProRes 422
The problem occurs randomly throughout the day, nothing seems to trigger it. When it starts the only way to make it stop is to restart the computer
Other software running at this particular time is” Mail, Evernote, Safari, OmniFocus, On The Job, Text Expander, Messages, Preview
No third-party effects or codecs installed.
    Hardware:

  • Timeline Saying Clips are Offline, when Browser Shows Clips to be OK

I have a few clips in my timeline that fews the OFFLINE WINDOW. Yet when I check my browser, the clips have no offline slash and can be seen as edited in the canvas. How do I make the clips show normally on the timeline. Also clips are trying to show the actual clip photo, bu only show half. And yes I have tried reconnecting the media, does not work.
    Thanks

Trash your thumbnail cache file... it's location is set in the Scratch Disk Settings near the bottom of the window if you don't know where you've put them... just trash them and the offline media thumbnails will go away. It's caused by opening a project file without the media online, then saving it. The thumbnails don't get rewritten with the proper pictures when you do that.

  • Using Flach CS4 and action script 2.0 how do I advance to a specific frame of the main timeline when a movie clip instance come to the end of its timeline?

Using Flach CS4 and action script 2.0 how do I advance to a specific frame of the main timeline when a movie clip instance come to the end of its timeline?

code on the last frame of your movieclip instance:
_root.gotoAndStop('whatever_frame');  // will work unless this swf is loaded into another swf.  in that situation, you should use a relative path to the main timeline (eg,  _parent or _parent._parent etc).

  • Export setting when mp4 clips are in timeline

I have a movie montague of different clips, including mp4 clips.. When I export, no matter what format I export in it makes the final movie all jittery, iall of the mp4 clips do not play properly, what format do I export in to make it play smoothly?

If your mp4 files are interlaced, and you output has a different field order, it will make the output jittery.
Check the mp4 field order, it should have one of three possible values: progressive (if it's this, there is some other problem), upper field first, and lower field first.
Whatever it is, see if it matches the output (which will also have one of those three field orders).
If they are both progressive, let me know and we can figure out other solutions.

  • How can I stop sound track from being divided when adding clips to other tracks in PrE12?

    The situation:
I have a project with several minutes of video clips on the timeline (expert view) in "Video 1/Audio 1."  There is also music on the sound track (below the empty "Narration" track).
Any time I make an edit to the Video 1 track, PRE cuts the Sound Track.  (Note that this is not the Audio 1 track, it's the sound track which is two tracks away.)  If I insert a clip, the Sound Track is cut and left with a gap.  Same if I do a FreezeFrame insert.  This is bad enough (make ten insertions, have the Sound Track chopped into ten separate pieces), but it gets worse: when I try to slide the Sound Track pieces back together, the Video 1 clips will be moved around.
This appears to be a major bug but I'm hoping there is a simple way to deal with it.
Here's what the Manual (p.71) has to say about it (not much).
"When you insert a clip into the Expert view timeline, adjacent clips on all tracks shift to accommodate the new clip. By shifting all clips together, the audio and video of the existing clips remain in sync."
    * The question here is, adjacent to what?  The Sound Track is a continuous music clip of many minutes; it is alone on the Track, and there is nothing on the track above it (Narration track).  So it's not adjacent to anything, and yet it is being chopped up.
    The Manual continues:
"Sometimes, you don’t want all clips to shift with each insertion. For example, when you add background music that superimposes the entire movie, you don’t want clips to shift."
*They got that right, but they don't say anything about how to prevent it.
This next makes no sense at all:
"To shift specific clips togather, press the Alt key as you insert.  At a time, you can shift specific clips simultaneously on a maximum of two tracks.  These include the track receiving the insertion and the track containing the linked audio or video (if any). The affected tracks shift together, remaining aligned. The clips on other tracks are unaffected."
*There is no mention of how to specify what clips would be shifted, or not.
I'm not dealing with linked clips.  And they tell me how to shift clips (sort of) but nothing about how to stop clips from being cut up and shifted.  This all makes it very hard to create a coordinated product.
Any suggestions or solutions will be much appreciated.

    Thanks, ATR,
I wll try this--but I still am unclear on how to do what the Manual says is possible: select clips on another track that WILL be moved, if I so desire, so as to remain synched to the main Video track.
    UPDATE:
In the case of inserting Freeze Frame, I just tried both Ctrl method and Alt method, and neither worked.
    1. Put Video on Vid1 track
    2. Put Music on Sound Track
    3. Ran a few seconds of Vid
    4. Stopped Vid, selected Freeze Frame
    5. Held down Ctrl key while clicking "Insert in Movie"  also tried with holding down Alt key.
Result: a 3 second still was inserted int the Vid1 track.  A corresponding gap was created in the Sound Track.
    6. Slid the final part of the Sound Track to the left along the timeline to re-connect it to the next segment created by the above process.
Result: the video following the final Freeze Frame was pushed to the right end of  Video1 track.
    7. Slid the Sound Track all the way to the left.
Result: the entire Video 1 Track contents were pushed to the right and divided in pieces.
I documented each step with screen shots which I can send if you want them and if I can figure out how to do it.
    UPDATE #2
In the case of inserting a video clip to the Timeline, I just tried both Ctrl method and Alt method, and neither worked.
    1. Locate video in Project Assets
2a. R click video in Project Assets (pull-down menu appears), hold down Ctrl, click Insert to Timeline.
Result: Vid clip is inserted on Video 1 track, Sound Track is separated with a corresponding gap.
2b.  R click video in Project Assets (pull-down menu appears), push Alt
Result: pull-down menu disappears as soon as Alt is pushed down.
I can stil drag the Vid clip but it's one more manual step...I love shortcuts!!

  • Linking audio clips in timeline

This must be as simple as I obviously am:
I would like to link some audio clips together (which currently run one after another) in the timeline in order that I can then drag them into the the viewer where I can then alter the levels and pans across the clips as a whole.
At the moment, when I select the clips and then drag them into the viewer, I just get the first clip as if taken from the browser, with the in / out points marked (i.e. what I originally dragged from the viewer into the timeline).
Have I explained this well enough? Can anyone help please?

as usual there a few ways you can do this .. just not the way you're trying to!
you can adjust pan for a selection of clips by choosing Modify menu > Audio > Pan Left/Center/Right
you can adjust the levels for a selection of clips by choosing Modify menu > Levels... which brings up the Gain Adjust window: in there you can make a releative or absolute adjustment to the selected clips
alternatively you could select those clips then choose Sequence meny > Nest Items which will create a new sequence containing those selected clips, replacing the selection in the current sequence with a single (nested sequence clip) ... then you can drag that one up into the viewer and adjust pan and levels as if it were a single merged clip
alternatively you can change your View menu > Playhead Sync to "Open"
then as you move your playhead in the timeline/canvas the clip under the playhead will be automatically loaded into the Viewer window where you can adjust pan/levels as required

  • Lost my SNAP TO when moving clips. So weird. No idea how.

So somehow, today I am no longer able to get that SNAp when I love clips to connect to other clips in my timeline. I hope I am describing this correctly.
In the timeline of a sequence, I have a piece of vieo and I am going to move it so that ti directly connects with another piece of video. When they meet it SNAPS in place automatically. you can keep moving it if you want, if course, but Lordy Lord does this make it easy to edit.
Now I can't and I have spent over an hour trying to figure out how to change it back. I know it's going to be something easy and simple. But I am clueless.

    Oh, snap!
    (PS: That's the Timeline panel.)
Or, press "S" on your keyboard.

  • How do I pre-render only portions of the timeline or selected clips?

I'm switching from Vegas Pro to Premiere Pro. In Vegas, you select a portion of the timeline, then hit control-B and it pre-renders that segment.
In Premiere, you hit enter, but it doesn't pay attention to the selected clips, it just pre-renders the entire sequence.
This wouldn't be such a big problem except I'm managing projects that are fairly long, with 20-30 sequences and 20 or so nested sequences in each project and I'm switching between around 18 different projects for a series of 23 or so videos.
These vids are already taxing my system resources with only a few minutes or so (referencing about 80-120gb of source footage), but my office comp is kinda weak.
The problem is that when I pre-render a nested sequence and bring it back to the main timeline, I have to pre-render it *again* after making the next set of adjustments (ie color correction, transitions etc). Then I have to do it AGAIN when I copy it to another timeline for another similar project.
Every time, it can take as long as 15 or 20 minutes (my video card is an nVidia GTX 560 Ti, it has CUDA, but prem doesn't support it for some reason).
When my main timeline glitched out, forcing me to split into different projects, it took me almost 4 hours just to copy things into place with the additional 20 minutes to load the glitched file.
Then I had to go and pre-render everything again to work my edits back into place.
Even when everything is 90% correctly laid out, I still have to wait for the entire sequence to finish pre-rendering.
As above, in Vegas Pro, I just select a portion of the timeline and the pre-render sticks to that area.
I saw an article that said you could create in and out points and use that for rendering, but it doesn't seem to be a CS6 thing.
I heard that Adobe was trying to keep CS6 up to date as a parallel thing to CC. Surely I don't have to switch to a $600/year subscription just so I can pre-render portions of the timeline like a lower-end competitor program has had for something like 5 years...?
What am I missing? There has to be a way to do this simply.

    Are you sure?
I have only 3 options on my Sequence menu.
The first is: Render Effects in Work Area (default shortcut - Enter)
    Then: Render Entire Work Area
    and: Render Audio
No other Render options are available from that menu.
Oddly, those two things are virtually identical. One of them shows 52 clips, the other showed 57 clips. With 26389 frames (approximately...) ETA is around 20-25 mins. That's not very workflow friendly.
It is smart enough that if I pre-render once, making minor changes later makes for much less pre-rendering work, but because I'm working with so many similar projects and sequences, all of them end up needing to be completely re-pre-rendered even if I'm doing a copy-paste and I need to tweak a few little things in one area of the timeline.
This was especially evident recently when in a 3 hour period, I had to go through 4 revisions and needed to keep my original iterations because the person who made the broad, sweeping decisions was making really bad decisions and I knew I would end up going back to my original plan and making a few comparatively simple changes (which is exactly what happened right after the 3 hours).
Out of 3 hours, I could have lost a good hour and a half just waiting around for pre-rendering stuff that hard already been pre-rendered, but because it had been copy-pasted, Prem couldn't see those previous pre-renders.
I actually only lost around 40 mins. But I had to reshoot footage, including setting up lights and camera angles, plus import and do color correction again thanks to no round-tripping to speedgrade and having shot in other areas with those cameras...
If I had been doing it in Vegas, I would have spent only around 10 minutes doing those pre-renders. Oh and Vegas can use my GPU... I'm an Adobe guy mainly, so it's frustrating to see Vegas win on silly niggles like this.

  • Move clips from timeline to event sub folder?

    Aloha,
Is there a way to move clips in the timeline that I have cleaned into a sub folder in an event library?
I come from a non FCP background and still trying to wrap my mind/workflow around the FCP formula.  Generally I clean clips and drop "some" into a "to be used later" folder.
Example - While on location I might shoot some location shots while im waiting around.  The locations shots will use in the last 3 mintues of a 25 minute finished project.  When I get to post I edit and clean all clips in the order they are received.  When I find the location clips I simply move them to a folder labled "to be used later".  When I get to the section of the project/timeline were the clips are needed I drag them or the entire folder into the timeline.
I see how to make a folder inside an event but I am not able to drag a clips from the timeline to this created folder.  I have tryied to hold down Shift, CMD, OPT, CTRL and have no sucess.
Thanks you for your time and help.
    Frederick
    Marbelle

    Aloha Fox,
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.  I feel you really understood my concern and gave me some good viable options.
There is a lot for me to learn and unlearn. I have been editing for over 16 years and most of that time I was using Edius. This is big paradigm shift coming to the Mac and FCPX.
The idea for me is to edit the video and move the "to be used later clips" into a bin/folder instead of moving them to the location in the timeline were they will be used at that very moment.  Its just a preference, I know plenty folks would just move the clip to the location.  Edit software is just a tool I have to decide if FCPX is the right tool for me.
Thank you again Fox for your time and understanding of my question.
    Be blessed,
    Frederick

  • Project renames sequence and all clips in the sequence when a clip is added

My project is renaming my sequences and the clips in those sequences whenever I add a clip. For example, I have a sequence called "dance section 2", which contains 20 some-odd clips with various names. When I add a clip named "drop from above", the name of the sequence is changed to "drop from above", and the name of every other clip in the sequence is also changed to "drop from above" (video, audio, stills, everything). When I add a clip named "spins", all the names are changed to "spins".
The name of the sequence is changed in both the timeline and the browser, but the names of the other clips are changed only in the timeline. In the browser, they keep their old names. The exception to this is the last clip added before the name changer. For example, if I add "drop from above" to the sequence, and then add "spins", the clip named "drop from above" is renamed "spins" in the browser as well as in the timeline, but the other clips are renamed only in the timeline.
The clips in the sequence also keep their original content - so the sequence looks the same as it did before, but all the names of the clips are changed.
This is only happening in one project. All of my other projects are working fine.
I've tried restarting and deleting preferences. I've also looked at the autosave vault for the project. The backup projects saved after a certain time all behave the same way, and the projects before that time all behave normally. I can't imagine what would have caused this, though, since I've been working on this project all day and nothing's happened to my computer or hard drive or anything.
Also, there are no freeze frames at the beginnings of my sequences (I read another thread with a somewhat similar issue and getting rid of freeze frames seemed to help that person).
I'm in FCP 7.0 on a Macbook Pro.
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Welcome to the discussions...
I've had this happen. My guess is that it's related to round-tripping to/from Color, but I can't be sure. IMHO, the sequence is corrupted. I just dealt with it for a while, then rebuilt it by making changes from an earlier version.
Sorry I don't have a better solution, but at least you know you're not alone.
    Patrick
