Automation Curves in Logic 8?

Hello!
I am waiting on a copy of Logic and am eager to learn whether or not there are automation curves in Logic 8. Ex. Select a portion of timeline, automate a parameter from xx to xx with an s shaped curve, parabolic, etc.
If anyone would like to post a quick answer it would be very much appreciated!

How it works in Logic is that you create the start and end points first and then apply the type of curve. However, both parabolic and s-curves are easily available and, in fact, use the same tool. It's just how you flick your wrist, so to speak...

  • How to copy automation curves in between parameters

Is it possible, to copy Specific automation curves between different parameters in Lofic pro X?
I know you can copy and paste automation curves from one track to another, but I can't remember if doing it from one parameter to other is possible.
If I want the exact automation curve that I did for my volume, to be used on the same ( or another ) track, but on a tremolo, How do you do that?
Whenever I try to paste it, it pastes to the same parameter ( Volume Curve to Volume parameter, etc. )
    Edit:
I found the answer on another discussion, Use Comand,

In project one, open the Automation Event List for the region in question, select all, goto project two, do the same but use paste instead.
Slightly awkward perhaps, but it works. It would have been easier if the automation would just follow the regions when you drag them between projects.
Edit: the Automation Event List is only available as a KC, Ctrl + Cmd + E as default.

  • Non-GUI editing or import of automation curves?

I would like to generate some automation curves (for track volume) outside of garageband (from simple programs that I write myself) and somehow get them into garageband projects.
I can think of a couple of possible approaches:
    - If garageband has some sort of way of editing curves as text, so that I could paste in some text generated elsewhere, then that would be fantastic... but I'm guessing it doesn't.
    - If there's some other way of cutting/pasting pasting curves, even if it's not text, then maybe I could figure out how to make that work... that would take care of the "paste" part, but depending on the details it might be trickly to get my generated curves into the clipboard...
    - If I could find where/how curves are represented in .band files (actually directories) then I could mess with the files directly, either using an editor (emacs, etc.) or writing my own code to parse/change/write the files. I've looked through the files within a project, and it seems like the data must be in projectData... but I can't figure out where.
    Any pointers would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -Lee

Wow, I think you are asking too way much. Users often wonder if ther is a specific feature, if GarageBand can do a specific task. But what you are asking goes way beyond what GarageBand is and what it is for.
    About Automation.
You only can copy Automation curves between Tracks. That's pretty much it.
I don't think there is any kind of hook into the app itself to mess with the curve on a developer base. There are only a couple of XML files hidden in the Package File that you can alter or swap out some graphic files and that's about it regarding your mods.
    Hope that helps

  • Need a fluctuating automation curve

I need an automation curve for one of my tracks that STARTS with the low-mids and slowly ENDS with high treble. How can I get this effect?
Currently I'm doing it manually in the Visual EQ to see how it sounds, but I don't know how to record what I'm doing (i.e. dragging the point in the Visual EQ from the low-mid to high treble).

    rsherid wrote:
I can only pick one Visual EQ effect from the list when I actually want one that fluctuates between EQs.
you can automate any parameter an effect offers:
every box you check gets a curve of its own to raise or lower at any point in time
( EDITED to remove a mistaken memory about Visual EQ {Hey, I'm trying to get ready to go out for the evening, cut me some slack, eh? B-)> })

  • Automation Data in Logic 8

    Hi,
I apologise if this answer has been given ad nauseum ad infinitum in advance, but I am wondering how do I copy automation data along with a section of audio/midi? Moving it is easy enough but copying that data and pasting it at a particular point isn't as intuitive for some wierd reason. Once again, sorry.

If you option+drag a region Logic will ask you wether you want to copy the automation or not, if you want that. In the Preferences->Automation at the top you have three options: Always/Never/Ask

  • How to get "Automation" boxs in Logic 7.1.1

Yikes where do I go for Logic 7 questions?
Perhaps i'll get lucky here. Please.
I've been useing LOGIC 7X since inception & always had PROBLEMS WITH AUTOMATION when (dragging or copying) moving parts. Not with even remotely acurate.
Only occasionally by accident, the ARRANGE screen displays boxes that look like sequence lines but are all entitled "Automation" (intead of licks I played).Weird. A normal option?
Low & behold when I drag these lines they accurately move automation. I can open a diff arrange-screen-set or new one to get the normal licks/etc displayed but I wanna know... HOW DO I GET THAT SPECIAL "Arrange- Automation" type-page for new songs? Can't find it in the manual.
I am not talking about the normal "Display automation" here. This screen looks like seq boxes.
It almost seems like it was a hidden feature for the Logic- Geeks-inventors.
Is it right under my nose? If so,sorry for the lame brain.
    Thx,
    Woody

You've probably opened the Track Automation Folder, which displays the track-based automation as regular regions.
To open it, you must open the automation event list, and with that open, open a new arrange window from the Window menu. The new arrange window will display the Track Automation Folder. It's the only way to get there, the key command was removed.

  • Kontakt 4 Automation weirdness in Logic

My K4 Session Strings instance has its own automation parameters (see the fig). Now, clicking on automation track paramteters of Logic I can't view the first 14 parameters assigned to K4. In place of them there are 4 parameters apparently identical and incompletely defined: "(script 1)-02 Legato SustainAccent", infact this way you can't know if they are Dynamik, or Groove, or Attack, ecc. (see the same fig)
    It's annoying....

    Hello -
I have a similar set-up (noted below, with Mac OS X 10.6.4). I'm still experimenting with different configurations. Currently, I have Kontakt's memory server (don't remember its official name) engaged when in 64-bit mode (both Kontakt 4 and Logic Pro). On one project, I have a total of about 32 instruments in use including ones from Kontakt and EXS. All is well.
Now, it's my understanding that when in 64-bit mode, one doesn't need to use Kontakt's memory server. Have you tried either engaging or disengaging the server?
Also. . . I'm using MOTU's 2408 MK3. As far as I know, its drivers are updated to the latest ones. This also may be helping me out. Are the drivers to your audio drivers the "latest and the greatest"??
Finally, is your OS updated to 10.6.4? Your Info currently indicates that your using OS 10.6.3. (Don't know if this makes any difference.)
It's interesting how people can have similar set-ups with differing results.

  • Automating effects levels in Logic 8

I'm trying to automatically start and fade an effect at the begining of a song. The plan is to have the effect at the begining of the song, then fade it a short time in. Is there an easy/simple way to do this?

Have a look at automation in the Logic manual. You can record the fade you want that way

  • Logic Pro Automation plays early

Hey guys, I wonder if anyone can help me with this, I have had it happen always when automating soft synths and plugins with external controller knobs. Whenever I automate any paramente with a knob, it sounds perfect when recording, and the touch of my knob is perfect with what I listen. But when I play back the newly recorded automation, it plays early, as if logic were sending the data early to the plugin. The automation drawing in logic is OK, it is where it should be, but it just plays early, I would say a 16th note early. Has anybody run into this issue? The only way I could solve it is moving all the automation late so that it would play correctly....
For this exact time, Im using Absynth 5....

Found the answer on other forums. for anybody that may someday have the same problem, go to:
Preferences / Audio / General, and set Sample Accurate Automation to Volume, Pan, Sends, Plugin Parameters

Logic has no standard AS Dictionary-here is a little crash course script (for Script Editor-which you can then move over to Automator once you make more common or useful/sizeable scripts. It should page you through your screensets, then hit key 'b' (whatever you have it assigned to), then save. Delay equals delay. This is a little introduction for you to get you started-AppleScript is growing like mad lately and becoming more useful-but this will get you started. The bulk of the Automator actions are actually just applescripts. Automator also can manage other technologies-shell scripts, cocoa events, bleah bleah bleah. If you want to learn more and do more there is thousands of pages of documentation concerning these technologies and how you can harness them. There is probably a AppleScript Forum-I'm just not somebody who breathes it-but yes...you can handle mouse events...key events and maybe in the future we'll get a dictionary for Logic (which would streamline and accelerate how we can script our macs with Logic). The point is the functionality is there, build the basic scripts you need and then use automator to put them in order, run loops, etc--if you are really hungry for this stuff you can develop all sorts of little apps for controlling Logic and other apps, but in the end you aren't getting any music done so a handful of scripts is all you'll really need in most cases-scripts for the monotonous and sequential repititious tasks. Running these for small functions will actually slow you down.

  • Unable to SMPTE LOCK automation

i am still struggling here with this locking issue!! the regions are locking fine, but the automation is NOT locking on any of my projects...
After SMPTE locking automation, by accessing the automation event list, selecting all, and then locking everything, I can still click and MOVE automation, which results in the flattening out of the yellow automation curve across whatever track's automation I clicked on and moved, and thus the disappearance of the automation I've done.
If I change the tempo, after locking automation, even by the slightest amount, which is the ultimate reason why I am doing this, ALL yellow automation curves flatten out across ALL tracks, and same thing, as a result of the flattening, any automation I have done disappears.
So the problem is that I am not able to SMPTE lock the automation. And I would like to know if anyone knows what is causing this issue, so I can make the change, get the automation to lock, so I can ultimately change the tempo of the song without effecting automation or positioning of regions.
I hope some one can help me trouble shoot. THANKS.

I am working with logic pro 8. ischwartz gave me the most concise instructions on how to SMPTE lock automation, he even let me send him a file, and he was successful in solving the issue on his machine, but still I could not get down to the bottom of it myself.
eriksimon's post doesnt help because I already know how to lock SMPTE position, open a new window containing only automation, etc, etc. i am TOO familiar with all that.
I need to be able to line up my vocals EXACTLY based on the proper tempo. I left this alone for a while because I thought I could pull off guesstimating where my voice can be copied and pasted for the choruses and be satisfied with that, but I'm realizing now that my project is almost complete, that I am not satisfied with guesses.
I cant make 1000 copies of my album, thinking that certain parts are slightly off, however slightly they may be. and the only way to get it to sound 100% natural so audio vocal regions can be copied and pasted with exaction, is to have the tempo SET prior to starting projects OR change the tempo from the default 120 to the proper tempo for each song NOW, which will only be possible through effectively locking all automation and of course, keeping all automation in tact.
Anyways, I didn't set the tempo prior to beginning these projects, so back to the issue at hand, I need to be able to lock automation, so I can change the tempo on projects that are almost compete -- full of automation (though only volume), full of cuts and pieces of regions here and there, and overlapping regions in some places.
Something is just holding me back from being able to lock automation, so I can change the tempo and solve my ultimate problem. And i feel like it might be something very simple...
Anyways Ive described this issue in every possible way I can. I just hope that there's somebody out there who can help me get this right.
    PEACE & BLESSINGS,
    Ojan

  • Possible to do plugin automation with BCF2000? or can I Draw it?

Hi, I get a BCF2000. It works in Logic Control emulation with STP now, but I don't know how to use it to control STP's plugin automation curve. Anyone knows it?
If not possible, can i just use mouse to drag an automation curve - not by dragging breakpoint to breakpoint one, but just like drawing with a pen tool?

The new version of GarageBand is only compatible with 10.9 and above.
If your Mac can run MacOS X 10.6.8, it probably can be upgraded to Yosemite, if you don't have to stick to Snowleopard for other reasons.
Is it possible to still get the older version?
Amazon or eBay are still selling iLife '11 installer disks, and you could reinstall GarageBand from these DVDs. But it will be expensive.
Have you checked your backups, if you can restore GarageBand from a backup?
OR, can I get another copy of the startup CD that came with my computer so that I can reinstall GarageBand?
Sometimes the AppleStore Support will replace missing installer CDs for a fee.

  • Volume levels in logic pro X keep jumping up to +5.2 and  +5.0 by itself?

Volume levels in logic pro X keep jumping up to  5.2 and  5.0 by itself. There are no plugins nor automation activated on tracks? how can i stop the track levels from jumping?
What do i do to avoid this?

I and the same problem and neither of these fixes solved it. Defintely not a controller problem as guessed.
The problem was solved by going to the step editor - similar to automation - but more hidden, and also taking place in the track at a point that I had trimmed out that heppened before the beginning of the composition.
I solved the problem by going into the step editor of the track and deleting the bar in the volume track that kept setting it, and not showing up as an automation curve.
I found this problem infuriating ,I really hope this solution helps.

  • Is it possible to automate software instrument parameters in a MIDI region? And alias the region with the automation?

I am trying to track down a detail about how automation works in Logic Pro X.
What I want to know is:
    1. Can I draw control-point curves (and smoothly bend them) in a MIDI region to automate a software instrument parameter (and/or smart controls)?
    2. Can a region containing this automation be aliased and reused around the timeline (without the automation points being duplicated)?
If this is possible, can someone please post a couple of screenshots - a MIDI region with MIDI Draw automating (for example) the cutoff of an ES M, and screenshots of aliases around the timeline?
    thanks!!
    H

First, I'd recommend going to Track>other>new with same instrument.  This gives you a blank lane to make a region with no notes.
Now, there are two strategies: do some track automation and then convert it to region. You can go into the local view menu and find the option to view MIDI automation and still adjust it.  Now you can make aliases of that region. You need to be careful of accidentally writing new track automation, which is easy to do and can happen if you have 'move automation with regions' on for instance.  If you make sure and delete all the track auto for this parameter you should be good (the line should be barely visible black, if it is highlighted in color, that means there is at least one active node at the beginning).  If the parameter freaks out, instead of following your curve, you can bet there is track automation fighting with the region automation, you might need to tell the automation menu in the track header to show the parameter in question.  None of this is a big deal and after doing it once you'll see.
The other strategy is to assign a controller to a parameter (or use the quick MIDI things on certain instruments - you mentioned ES2, which has that) and you can use the hyper draw in the piano roll.  The view tip from the first strategy still works so you can edit the automation in the arrange.  I prefer the first strategy because the knob you are automating will still move.
If you go to audio tuts plus (something like that) you can find a tut on the first method that's a few years old, and from Logic 9.  Basically the same, you just have to look through different menus for everything.
