AwesomeWM volume widget is not recognizing input

Hi, I am trying to get this volume widget to work:
-- Volume widget
volumecfg = {}
volumecfg.cardid = 0
volumecfg.channel = "Master"
volumecfg.widget = widget({ type = "textbox", name = "volumecfg.widget", align = "right" })
volumecfg_t = awful.tooltip({ objects = { volumecfg.widget },})
volumecfg_t:set_text("Volume")
-- command must start with a space!
volumecfg.mixercommand = function (command)
local fd = io.popen("amixer -c " .. volumecfg.cardid .. command)
local status = fd:read("*all")
fd:close()
local volume = string.match(status, "(%d?%d?%d)%%")
volume = string.format("% 3d", volume)
status = string.match(status, "%[(o[^%]]*)%]")
if string.find(status, "on", 1, true) then
volume = volume .. "%"
else
volume = volume .. "M"
end
volumecfg.widget.text = volume
end
volumecfg.update = function ()
volumecfg.mixercommand(" sget " .. volumecfg.channel)
end
volumecfg.up = function ()
volumecfg.mixercommand(" sset " .. volumecfg.channel .. " 1%+")
end
volumecfg.down = function ()
volumecfg.mixercommand(" sset " .. volumecfg.channel .. " 1%-")
end
volumecfg.toggle = function ()
volumecfg.mixercommand(" sset " .. volumecfg.channel .. " toggle")
end
volumecfg.widget:buttons({
button({ }, 4, function () volumecfg.up() end),
button({ }, 5, function () volumecfg.down() end),
button({ }, 1, function () volumecfg.toggle() end)
volumecfg.update()
It shows up in the task bar, but I can not interact with it in any way, apart from the text box that pops up on hover. I have other widgets that accept mouse input just fine.
Anyone know what the problem might be?
UPDATE:
I set global keybindings pointing to the functions in the widget as an experiment:
awful.key({ modkey, }, "0", function () volumecfg.up() end),
awful.key({ modkey, }, "9", function () volumecfg.down() end),
And it works! So the widget is functional, it's just the mouse interaction that is broken.
When I reload awesome I get this in the console:
/home/zypo/.config/awesome/rc.lua:185: W: luaA_button_new: This function is deprecated and will be removed, see new syntax
/home/zypo/.config/awesome/rc.lua:186: W: luaA_button_new: This function is deprecated and will be removed, see new syntax
/home/zypo/.config/awesome/rc.lua:187: W: luaA_button_new: This function is deprecated and will be removed, see new syntax
those lines are:
button({ }, 4, function () volumecfg.up() end),
button({ }, 5, function () volumecfg.down() end),
button({ }, 1, function () volumecfg.toggle() end)

Hi, in order to get rid of those warnings, you can try :
volumecfg.widget:buttons({awful.util.table.join(
awful.button({ }, 4, function () volumecfg.up() end),
awful.button({ }, 5, function () volumecfg.down() end),
awful.button({ }, 1, function () volumecfg.toggle() end)
instead of :
volumecfg.widget:buttons({
button({ }, 4, function () volumecfg.up() end),
button({ }, 5, function () volumecfg.down() end),
button({ }, 1, function () volumecfg.toggle() end)

  • Broadcaster not recognizing input

    I'm trying to broadcast the video signal via firewire directly out of an editing application (FCP )on a G5. I wan't to run the firewire out of the editing G5 and into my laptop with Broadcaster operating.
    I know the Firewire out of the editing app is good because I can hook it up to a camera or a dv deck and see the signal just fine.
    I know that Broadcaster is okay because if I feed it a signal from a camera or a DV deck, it sees and broadcasts those perfectly.
    But it just won't recognize a signal flowing through firewire directly from a G5. Does anyone know what's up? Are the decks and cameras somehow alerting Broadcaster to their identity, while the G5 doesn't?
    Thanks for any help.

    Thanks, Ricktoronto. I fugured it was something like this. I'm hoping there's some way to trick Broadcaster into accepting the signal.
    I can work around the problem by routing a signal out of FCP, into a deck, then out via firewire to Broadcaster. But this introduces another couple layers of signal conversion. I just wish there were a more elegant way to do this.

  • Mbox recognized but NOT working--input volume greyed

    I have the original Mbox, which came with protools 6.4
    I used to use the mbox with garageband and have no problem.
    At some point I updated to OS 10.4.3
    At about the same point I updated to protools 7.0
    Now the Mbox appears in the pref list in garageband, but when I select it (as opposed to the built in mic) the input volume of the selected tracks goes grey and I the imput from the Mbox is not recognized in garageband.
    I read all about how I should install the standalone core audio driver and uninstall protools. I have done this and still no luck. I have tried standalone core audio drivers versions 6.9, 7.0, and 7.3. No luck.
    The only thing I can think is that I have not properly uninstalled protools 7.0. I did an uninstall of 6.4 with the CD, and since I don't have the CD from 7.0, I called digidesign and they are sending me one. In the meantime they emailed me a 'PT Cleaner' that is supposed to disable all PT related files.
    All I can think is that I really need to wait for the PT 7.0 CD and run an uninstall with it, and then re-install the standalone core audio driver.
    Could it be something else? I am at wit's end!
    I repeat: THE MBOX APPEARS IN GARAGEBAND PREFS, BUT WHEN IT'S SELECTED, THE INPUT VOLUME IS GREYED AND NO SIGNAL GOES INTO GARAGEBAND.
    I HAVE TRIED EVERY VERSION OF STANDALONE CORE AUDIO. HELP!!!!

  • [SOLVED] Awesome is not recognizing widgets

    Hey everybody,
    So this is my first (non-virtualbox) arch install. I just switched over from crunchbang. I had awesome installed on crunchbang and used that as my primary window manager. So I saved all of my configs and everything so that I could use them on arch. I got arch installed and then awesome, and awesome works well. I am using it right now. But as soon as I started trying to add widgets it wouldn't let me. Every time I restart it awesome reverts to the rc.lua in /etc/xdg... and gives me a warning message saying:
    Oops, there were errors during startup!
    /home/nathan/.config/awesome/rc.lua:117: attempt to call global 'widget' (a nil value)
    The line it is referring to is this:
    separator = widget({ type = "textbox" })
    Also, all of the requires at the top currently look like this:
    -- Standard awesome library
    local gears = require("gears")
    local awful = require("awful")
    awful.rules = require("awful.rules")
    require("awful.autofocus")
    -- Widget and layout library
    wibox = require("wibox")
    -- Theme handling library
    local beautiful = require("beautiful")
    -- Notification library
    local naughty = require("naughty")
    local menubar = require("menubar")
    So I tried to google and search the awesome wiki and the arch wiki for how it is done on arch. From everything I have found I am doing it correctly, but I must be missing something. One thought was that it might be a result of the most recent awesome update. I think it was on the 4th. Any ideas?

  • TV not recognizing VGA input

    I have this TV hooked up to my Arch machine and whenever I run xrandr the computer sees the output. The problem is, the TV is not recognizing any input so I can't change into VGA. Arch even detects the correct resolution and when I hook up a Debian machine it displays image with no problem.

    Look into your TV manual for the supported resolutions
    I had a experience a while back with a TV at my wife parents place where xrandr said that 1980x1080 (fullHD) was a supported resolution, but the screen just went blank. When I consulted the manual, I found out that the maximum supported resolution was in fact, 1366×768 (WXVGA), which worked almost perfectly (there was a missing pixel column on the right side, not too much of a trouble).
    Short version: Check the TV specs, xrandr sometimes lies.

  • Keyboard input from numbers 1-0 not recognized

    On my ibook G4 which I recently started using again, I've noticed that now all input from the "number bar", that is, digits one through zero, is not recognized, that is, it's as if I weren't pressing it at all. I've gone through system preferences, reset everything to default, and I've even done three separate PMU resets, but to no avail. Curiously, all the F keys function. I have access to some number input with the "number lock" feature, but any number that resides on the actual number bar like seven eight or nine cannot be entered. I have no problem with ~, -, +, or delete, either. Any help to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

    Hey Danger and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
    It sounds like the horizontal trace that links the numbers together has developed an open. I know of no way to repair this and the solution would be a replacement keyboard. Verify the problem isn't software related by plugging in a USB keyboard and checking function.

  • Garageband not recognizing external inputs from minijack entrance

    Hello
    I need to connect a sound mixer to the Macbook via minijack audio entrance. Even I have changed the settings for audio input in System Preferences (from internal mic to external line) garageband is not recognizing any external input and internal microphoen is always active.
    Someone had the same problem?
    Thankx

    Change the input in Garageband > Preferences > Audio Midi.

  • AwesomeWM progressbar widget issue

    Hi,
    I'm moving from KDE to Awesome and configuring awesome has been easy enough. I'm running into an issue with the progressbar widget though.
    As you can see in the screenshot below, there is some space in between the volume textarea ("69%") and the separator ('//'). This is were the progressbar is (supposed to be).
    My rc.lua (volume widget starts at line 140) has some buttons attached to the 2 volume widgets (the textarea and the progressbar). Those work fine, since when I use them while my mouse is over the spot where the progressbar should be, they work.
    This means the progressbar does get created and thus should be visible, yet it isn't. I've tried different foreground and background colors but it never worked. I also tried setting a gradient but that didn't make the progressbar visible either.
    I also tried creating a progressbar using "volumebar = awful.widget.progressbar()" instead of "volumebar = widget({type="progressbar" ..." but then it doesn't even reserve space for the progressbar in the wibox.
    What's causing this? I must be forgetting something very simple, but I've looked at other rc.lua's and i can't see a difference.
    My awesome version:
    awesome v3.4.5 (Close To You)

A: AwesomeWM progressbar widget issue

Here is a section from my old rc.lua when I still had a volume bar:
volbar = awful.widget.progressbar()
volbar:set_width(10)
volbar:set_height(18)
volbar:set_vertical(true)
volbar:set_background_color("#1a1918")
volbar:set_color("#ff6500")
volbar:set_gradient_colors({ "#1a1918", "#60801f", "#9acd32" })
vicious.enable_caching(vicious.widgets.volume)
vicious.register(volbar, vicious.widgets.volume, "$1", 2, "Master")
volbar.widget:buttons(
awful.util.table.join(
awful.button({ }, 1, function () awful.util.spawn("amixer -q sset Master toggle") end),
awful.button({ }, 4, function () awful.util.spawn("amixer -q sset Master 2dB+", false) end),
awful.button({ }, 5, function () awful.util.spawn("amixer -q sset Master 2dB-", false) end)
So I think you should maybe try changing your "volume.width = 50" to "volumebar:set_width(50)", etc.
And you need to register your volumebar with vicious to get the input (ie.' "$1", 2, "Master"' etc.). At the moment, your volbar widget is empty with no input.

Here is a section from my old rc.lua when I still had a volume bar:
volbar = awful.widget.progressbar()
volbar:set_width(10)
volbar:set_height(18)
volbar:set_vertical(true)
volbar:set_background_color("#1a1918")
volbar:set_color("#ff6500")
volbar:set_gradient_colors({ "#1a1918", "#60801f", "#9acd32" })
vicious.enable_caching(vicious.widgets.volume)
vicious.register(volbar, vicious.widgets.volume, "$1", 2, "Master")
volbar.widget:buttons(
awful.util.table.join(
awful.button({ }, 1, function () awful.util.spawn("amixer -q sset Master toggle") end),
awful.button({ }, 4, function () awful.util.spawn("amixer -q sset Master 2dB+", false) end),
awful.button({ }, 5, function () awful.util.spawn("amixer -q sset Master 2dB-", false) end)
So I think you should maybe try changing your "volume.width = 50" to "volumebar:set_width(50)", etc.
And you need to register your volumebar with vicious to get the input (ie.' "$1", 2, "Master"' etc.). At the moment, your volbar widget is empty with no input.

  • USB Mic not recognized

    My internal mic sounds like crap - originally it was fine - now I am getting a horrible high pitched sound when I try to record in iMovie 08.
    I've adjusted the input volume - no effect.
    I bought a Blue Snowflake USB mic and it's not recognized at all.
    Any suggestions?

    All that has been done - I dusted off my old windows machine and the mic works on that one. The manufacturer says that it works with Mac OSX...
    I'm afraid that it's possible that the Macbook can't power the mic.

  • ES1946 (Solo) Audio controller not recognized

    Dear all,

  • My Bose SIE2i volume control does not work. (pause/play does work). This is the secone set - the apple store in Sydney replaced the firsat set that had the same problem. It was working OK and has stopped.

    My Bose SIE2i volume control does not work. (pause/play does work). This is the second set - the apple store in Sydney replaced the first set that had the same problem. It was working OK and has stopped.

    Thanks again V.K. I did check the layout, and it was listed as alphabet when I inputted the password. So that doesn't seems to the the issue.
    Just finished a truly mystifying experiment, but I put in a shorter password in the way mentioned earlier and it worked. I then systematically kept increasing the characters of that password and it seems that if the password starts to exceed about 16, it stops recognizing it. I am fairly sure it is not the password itself since it never gives an error when typing in the verification password. So unless I systematically make the exact mistake twice at the setup screen, and then don't or make a different mistake every time at the login screen, I don't think its my typing skill.
    So problem solved for now, but I am still a bit worried. Maybe I should completely reinstall and use a shorter password.
    Is there supposed to be a length limit?

  • Problem on Ebay that Firefox 5 is not recognized?

    Hi, I just updated my browser to Firefox 5 yesterday (I used to have Microsoft Explorer) and today I tried to list a classifed ad on ebay.co.uk and the ebay system generated an automatic error message saying that I need to update above Firefox 1.5 so it is not recognizing Firefox 5 and I was not able to input the information on the ebay system. I contact Ebay help and there only suggestion was to switch over to Microsoft Explorer. I would prefer to keep using Firefox - do you have any suggestions. Please let me know if you have any questions.

    In case you did not get why Ed gave you that link, you appear to be posting with a Firefox 3.5.5 useragent . It was not until Firefox 4.0 and newer that Mozilla made it so extensions could not tack stuff on end and potentially make the UA get stuck at the version one had when a the extension that affected it was installed.
    Your useragent.

  • Isight not recognized by Skype, Google Video Chat, Logitech VID and ichat.

    MacBook4,1 Firewire
    Leopard 10.5.8
    Skype 2.8.0.866
    Quicktime Plug in 7.6.9
    QUictime player MIA
    Here is my story. I will try and make it as brief as possible.
    The other day, I put a rented DVD into my dvd drive, and it didn't load. I checked for updates for Mac or quicktime. Nothing available. I did some googlin, and someone suggested I zap pram, repair permissions. I blindly obeyed. That didn't help. Then I messed around with quicktime. Not sure what I did. Finally, I had to download the latest version of VLC to watch my movie. I have no idea of my problems with QT have anything to do with my isight issues with Skype and the like, but I mentioned it just in case.
    The next morning, when I went to skype, my video wasn't sending. I'm not sure if my chat partners video was working, we usually only do it one way. Me sending.
    I checked to see if my video was working in photobooth. Indeed it was (and still does).
    I have to date:
    Downloaded the latest version of QT (7.6.9 for Leopard)- the web plug-in for watching QT online is installed and running properly.
    After install, the QT player does not show up in applications, or anywhere else on the hard drive.
    I Messed around with QT in ways I can't describe. Trying to install older versions, removing who knows what files. Installing again.
    zapped PRAM
    Cleared preferences for Skype by removing skype plist
    download latest version skype
    deleted all skype files I could find
    reinstall Skype
    repaired permissions (FIRST THING I DID)
    Put your Mac to sleep
    Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
    Restart your Mac by by choosing the Apple
    Shut down your Mac
    Start up mac
    Shutting down, disconnecting power supply, taking out batter, putting dumte mac together again
    changed permissions on skype specifically to make sure all accounts were read/write
    tried setting using skype with a new account
    tried using skype, google video and logitech using wifi at my work
    uninstalled PREY video security app plug in
    removed and uninstalled divx
    removed and uninstalled perian
    Checked Preferences>Video show a black screen that says "No Video Camera Connected" and does not show ANY cameras in the video camera chooser drop down"
    NOTE: Google Video Chat does show the isight cam, but a black screen. Logitech just has a black screen and asks "where in the interweb is your cam buddy?
    I have searched and failed to find CamCamX5.component
    Tested video in Google Chat and Logitech VID chat. built-in isight not recognized
    Tested video in iChat - I chat crashed when opening. (i posted the crash report at the end of this post)
    I'm sure I'm missing some.......
    SOME THINGS I HAVE NOT YET TRIED
    ROSETTA - in the Skype info pane, Rosetta is greyed out. I don't know if I have it, don't know where to get it. Don't know if I need.
    Installing Skype while playing Stairway to Heaven backwards
    Reset SMC or PMU
    Done disk repair - I'm not sure how to do that, I used to have a disc for my old mac for that
    Deleted iPhotoPhotocast and/or QuartzComposer.
    Closing Firefox and starting Skype
    install older version of skype

    I know this is a lot of info. I hope I didn't miss anything. I use skype with three people. Three very important people. Two of which, meh, the video isn't important. ONe where the video option is paramount.
    I'm just a little frustrated. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi,
    We will come back to iChat if required.
    It does prefer an Screen Name to be added as you go through the Start Up Screens (First Run) but you can click through these and just access the iChat > Preferences > Video Section to view a Preview.
    I must admit to not seeing a Crash Log when the known chosen Mic/Audio Input has not been listed.
    However if the External Audio was Firewire connected that may explain things.
    NOTE:-
    mAudio and other Firewire Audio Devices do tend to need the Most up-to-date drivers to work properly.
    Sometimes it pays not to do a COMBO or other Software Update until you know the drivers are ready for it.
    With any OS update above the 10.x.1 point will also have a COMBO version.
    The COMBO then includes all the updated items between the base level OS and the latest Update.
    So for 10.6 there is only what is called a Delta for 10.6.1
    There is a delta (10.6.1 to 10.6.2 only) and a COMBO (10.6 to 10.6.2) for the next update and this is repeated through 10.6.6
    The Deltas only include those things that are Updated on that occasion (As in the 10.6.1 to 10.6.2 example - 10.6.5 to 10.6.6 would not include the stuff in 10.6.4 or earlier)
    COMBOs can be installed "Over-the-Top" of what you have already installed.
    It is certainly needed when you Re-install something (Apple apps/Files etc) from the Install Disk you have when your OS has been updated beyond that point.
    Some apps like iChat Get their Updates in the OS Updates and need to "Match" the progression.
    The 10.5.8 COMBO (Your specs say 10.5.8) is Here
    For others the 10.6.5 COMBO is here
    and 10.6.6 COMBO IS here

    Quicktime.
    The Download and Install should be all the parts of Quicktime.
    Internet Plug-ins for Browsers, various System Files to make Quicktime work for other apps, various Components to play various formats and of course the Player itself.
    The Player should be in the Applications Folder with this icon:-
    The OS 10.6 version (Quicktime X has a big blue X icon)
    If you mean it has disappeared from the DOCK you can Drag the Application back to the DOCK to make the icon (and link to app) again (The app stays in the Applications folder the OS just makes an icon and links it for you by doing this)
    One of the biggest causes of many apps not working is turning Off/Disabling certain Fonts the apps need.
    Follow the Link in this Users Tip by Kurt Lang. Make sure that the Correct System Fonts are ON.

  • Hard drive not recognized in HDD bay.

    Randomly, my laptop gave me the spinny pinwheel of death when I opened it, and upon restart, I got the good old folder with a "?" indicating there was no OS. Naturally, I booted up in network recovery, and low and behold, my SSD was not in the Disk utility list. I made an adjustment some time ago where I removed my optical drive, and installed the old HDD that came with the computer in it's place. I switched the drives, so that the SSD was where the optical drive should be, and the HDD in the drive bay. Upon startup, the computer booted up as usual from the SSD, and the HDD was not recognized. So from there I conlcuded that both the SSD and HDD are working correctly without failure. After putting the drives back where they originally were (HHD in optical bay, and SSD in Drive bay), and I booted up holding the option key, The SSD and recovery drive were there, but I received a prohibited sign (circle with slash) after a minute. Now it is not recognizing the drive again. I'm not sure whats going on, anyone hav any input?
    Thanks

    You have a faulty hard drive to logic board cable. Replace that and you should be fine and the drive put in the main bay should show up.
