  • Extension for tiff files - tif vs tiff

I have encountered some (for me) confusing behavior. I have been working with both aperature and photoshop cs4. When I take a file from aperture to cs4, aperture creates a file with the extension.tiff. when I then save the file after working on it in photoshop it saves with the extension .tif. that is to say, Aperture uses 2 'f's and photoshop uses 1 'f' which results in two files. Is this related to option choice in the Tiff save panel or something anomalous with aperture.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

I have played with this a little more and this is what I found. The file created by aperture has the tiff extension. If photoshop is set up to open all tiff files using camera raw, then when editing is complete and the file is saved it will be saved using the save as dialog even if save is selected, and the tiff file saves with a single f by default. The second f can be added in the save dialog box in which case it asks if you want to save the file that already exists. Save over the original tiff file and the edits will be visible in aperture.
On the other hand if camera raw only opens tiff files with adjustments, the the save command saves directly in which case the two f extension is maintained.
Apparently use of camera raw causes the save as dialog box to come up the first time the file is saved. Thus one can either add the second f in the dialog or forgo the use of camera raw for tiff files being brought in from aperture.

  • G4 Compression for TIFF file

I am looking for a plug in to allow Photoshop to save TIFF files using G4 Compression on a Windows PC.  We have CS3, CS4 and CS5.
The TIFF files start as color and than we knock all the background out and it leaves just solid black and white in the image.  We have an aftermarket product to convert the TIFF images to G4 compressed TIFF images but I would much rather convert them in Photoshop because we can integrate the process into our scripting.  As we run this on ~100,000 files a month any little speed helps us a lot.
    Thank you, -Dan

  • Tiff Viewer which disables print, copy and save TIFF file

I am looking TIFF Viewer solution which woul disable any print, save and copy functions for a TIFF file. Thisfunctionality is available for PDF but I need to disable print, copy and save for TIFF files.
Would anyone know a TIFF viewer or solution that supports the following functions:
    1)      TIFF viewer where we can turn off any options to print the TIFF file or save it to disk.  That would include disabling any options where the user could right click on the TIFF and save the file somewhere else.

    3)      It would be nice if the TIFF viewer could be run on both Mac and Windows platforms.
I need to send files to users for view only, and these should be in TIFF fomat, not converted into a PDF.

The same answer applies to any kind of file.
You need a Digital Rights Management solution. Very expensive.

  • Save as a 16 bit TIFF file for Enlarging?

Question, a local photo developer told me that if I wanted to develop my photos at something like 16 x 20 or larger I should save my photos as a 16 bit TIFF file. Elements 4.0 does not seem to allow me to set the bits at 16, just 8. Is there any truth to what they are saying?
Also isn't the file size going to be massive when doing this. Most likely prohibiting an upload to their site?
I am shooting with a Nikon D50 in RAW format. Obvioulsy I have to open it in Elements from Camera Raw as an 8 bit photo to save it in either TIFF or JPEG format.
    Any comments are appreciated.

    Thank you for your comment.
When I save the 16 bit file in ACR it saves it as a .dng file. When I open the .dng file in Elements again the raw editor opens it as a 8 bit file automatically. This may be all well and good if I can have enlargements made with this file type but not good if what the developer is telling me is true. ???????

  • Gif or tiff files recommended for a PDF for publication?

    Hello,
I recently lost all the source files (InDesign of course) for a PDF that I created, but I still have the PDF itself. I bought some software (recosoft) that allows
me to open the PDF in InDesign, but I am given the choice of opening the images in the PDF as either gif or tiff files. Since the PDF needs to be edited more and will eventually be sent out to for publication, can anyone tell me which would be better, to have the images converted into gif or tiff? There are hundreds of images and they are integral to the (black and white) book.
    Thanks in advance!
    James

Properly speaking, the question is underspecified.
GIF is a file format that supports 8-bit color and no dpi specification, and is generally assumed to be 72dpi but the user can always indicate the image should be scaled appropriately, and supports limited transparency. It uses lossless compression, which means it is a very good file format indeed when compared to JPEG, if you are dealing with line art, text, or hard edges.
TIFF is a container file format. It has hundreds of different options (which is to say, millions of combinations of options), can be compressed lossily or losslessly (but is usually lossless), and supports a wide array of bit depths and color spaces, as well as metainformation including the resolution/dpi. It's easy to produce TIFF files with options that are wrong for any particular purpose.
Most of the time, if you are forced to choose between GIF and TIFF, you should choose TIFF. But if your images meet GIF's somewhat narrow constraints, you are probably better off choosing GIF. Certainly with GIF you know what you're getting. A lot depends on what the software is actually doing, which can be unknowable.
(A more common and frequently confused dilemma is JPEG versus GIF, and many people mistakenly choose JPEG when the image is not suitable for JPEG compression, and this can be a horrible horrible mistake that continues to make me feel sick every time I see the results, which is all-too-frequently.)
In this case, though, one has to wonder what the software developers were thinking. I'm not familiar with recosoft, but PDFs store images in only a small number of ways. They can be compressed lossily with JPEG compression, and they can be stored losslessly with a few other choices (the specifics of which don't matter too much because they are lossless!) like Flate (aka Zip), CCITT/Fax, LZW, and no compression at all.
When you're extracting an image from a PDF, what should be important is that you don't transcode the image through a lossy compression step. That is, if it was saved in the PDF with JPEG compression, you want to extract it with JPEG compression. If it was saved in the PDF without JPEG compression, you want to extract it without JPEG compression. Any time you change lossy compresson formats, you introduce artifacts, which are usually undesirable. There's no way to tell from looking at the PDF what non-lossy format the image originally was (e.g. to distinguish a PNG from GIF), but JPEGs are clearly identifable.
I usually use the free command-line tool pdfimages to extract images from PDFs, using the -j option to preserve JPEG compression where appropriate. pdfimages is part of xpdf. You can also do it with Acrobat Professional, though offhand I forget if it has a setting that is smart enough to extract JPEGs automatically where appropriate.

  • Raw File conversion to Tiff or Jpeg - best workflow for multiple files in Photo Shop Elements 11

Hello, I am pretty new to shooting in raw and Photoshop Elements (11).  I have one big problem. Once I open Elements up and load the Raw files from the SD card it shows them all on the left side in Camera Raw. I make my contrast and color adjustments if needed, but then my problem starts: I do not really want to make any further adjustments in Elements itself, but in order to save my Raw files either as Tiff or Jpeg it seems like I need to - through clicking on the "open image". Now it only opens up that one particular photo. I did not manage to go simply back to Camera Raw to grab the next one as the screen just disappears. However, this one by one process is of course not the preferred way. I know that there is batch processing, but am also not sure if my adjustments that I did in Camera Raw will carry over as I am actually never saving anything and would like to avoid saving it before all manually as .dng files as it would just be another extra step. I hope I could make clear where I have problems and what I would like to achieve and hope you can help me. Many thanks in advance.
    Philip

Simply select and edit each picture thumbnail from the left panel without clicking 'Done' or 'Open'.
When you have edited each individual picture, select all your thumbnails - click on the first one - shift click on the last one. They should be all highlighted.
    Then simply click 'Done'.
Your edits are saved in sidecar xmp files.
If the thumbnails are not yet automatically updated, select the files, right click and choose 'Update thumbnail'.
No need to use the editor with 'Open as' if you don't want any further edit or jpeg/tiff/psd/png version.
    Edit:
I am not sure I have understood your question.
The above process lets you convert and edit a batch of raw files without opening the editor.
If you want to get jpeg or tiff files from the already edited raw files, either use the 'process multiple files' of the editor or the 'export' feature from the Organizer.
The common raw workflow in Elements consists in converting small batches as explained above to take advantage of applying common edits or individual differences. In some cases you want to open the editor, in others not.
    That's at the input time.
When you want to output pictures, the selection of picture is different for each purpose. You'll include pictures edited in different batches, some still in raw format, others already converted in version sets to jpeg/tiff... For each output purpose, those selected pictures can be sent to the destination folder in the required format withoug opening the editor at that stage either using 'process multiple files' or 'export'.

  • Tiff viewer for text files.

I recently purchased an iPad 3. I need to view and sign tiff files that are text form sent from my office. How can I save them and send them back? The only information I can find so far are referring to picture files. What type of app do I need?

All I could find is a tiff viewer:
    http://appshopper.com/productivity/tiff-fax-viewer
There are computer apps that can convert them to PDFs and there are many PDF readers apps for the iPad that allow you to sign/annotate PDFs. GoodReader is one. There is also PDF Annotate.

  • Changing File path for different TIFF files in a For loop

    Hi dear users:
I am using "IMAQ write TIFF File.vi" that basically writes a TIFF file to a specified file path. However, I would like to CHANGE the file path for each TIFF file i save in a for loop. The reason for this is that the File path has to include the file name and I do not want to write over the same file name all the time in a for loop. What I would like to have are sequential TIFF images. So if the file name would be "Image", I would like the result to be Image0, Image1, Image2 and so forth when I run my For loop. Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks

  • Force finder to render thumbnails for layered tiff files

Since updating to to Mavericks I've noticed that the Finder no longer renders thumbnails for large layered TIFF files(1 to 2 Gb). This was never the case with prevoius versions of OS X. Is there some way to force Finder to render them again?

exactly the same problem here, solutions?

  • .TIFF files versus a .PSD file for mastering/archiving

It has been suggested to save your master files in a .TIFF format (apparently for archival reasons and possibly a more enduring file format).
I know a .TIFF file is a very sophisticated file format, is a container for file information, and can maintain PS information, such as smart objects, alpha channels, masks, adjustment layers, etc.
But is there anything a .PSD file can do that a .TIFF file cannot?
I just want to be sure before I convert all my archived files to .TIFF.
    Best Regards,
    Kkamin

PSD can handle a few color modes that TIFF cannot.
And the layer data in PSD and TIFF is pretty much the same.
For archiving, most people are talking about flat TIFF files - that part is well documented.
Comparing layered formats - there is no great reason to convert them.

  • "Combine supported files in Acrobat..." is missing for TIFF

Just upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit (Acrobat 8) and my right click Combine is not available for TIFF's anymore
I tried running regsvr32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat Elements\ContextMenu64.dll" but no luck with that either (error code 0x80070005)
I use this all the time so being unable to use it now is a pain!  Any help is appreciated, thanks!

    Hi thandman,
Acrobat 8 is not certified for Win 7 64 bit, so this may just be the first issue you will encounter.
    Hope this helps,

  • Bridge to PS CC 2014:  Error "Windows Cannot Find Photoshop CC" for PSD & TIFF files

Since installing PS CC 2014, I have been unable to open PSD & TIFF files from within Bridge.  If I do- I get the error above.   Once Photoshop CC 2014 was installed, I removed the older version of PS CC.
Sounds like a registry issue created when PS CC 2014 installed alongside PS CC; confusing Bridge of where to send Photoshop files.

Looks like bridge is still trying to run the old version.  Did you uninstall Photoshop CC after installing Photoshop CC 2014?
Have you made sure and fully closed Bridge and reopened it?  Logging off and back on would ensure that.
Failing the above, people have reported success with using the Creative Cloud Cleaner tool followed by a reinstall of Photoshop CC 2014...

  • Browsing for layered PSD & TIFF files

I have a folder with about 700 Photoshop and TIFF files. I want to browse quickly through the whole group and find those files that have layers. I have looked in Bridge and in Lightroom. Neither of those shows the number of layers in a file.
I remember seeing this information once somewhere else but I can't find it now.
    Thomas

The File Info in the Finder does provide such info but is not really convenient, I guess.
One can search the Layer-names in Finder, but I’m unsure how to use the existence of the Layers-property itself …
Edit: If the files all had a Background Layer and one searched the Contents instead of the Names it would be fairly easy to identify them.
This may be unnecessarily complicated but I would expect that a Script could be used to read the Files and retrieve the pertinent information (though that’s beyond me), so unless someone presents a more convenient solution you might try asking in the Photoshop Scripting Forum.

  • How to show tiff files in sharepoint

    Hello,
Ee have a bunch of scanned documents saved as tiff. How can I show them? Web app server won't preview them and this is a real big issue.
On the other hand, websio does the job, but  I wouldn't like to have websio and web app server coexist.
Is there anoter solution? I'm conmortable for a web part put in viewitem.aspx that shows the tiff file underneath the metadaa.
