Back button in IE vs. Firefox

Hi all,
I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on a problem I'm having. I have a jsp page where the user submits a form for their invoice history. That works no problem. If there is a matching invoice number a new window opens, if pop ups are allowed, and the user now has a PDF copy of their invoice. If pop ups are blocked, the PDF opens in the same window.
Here's where the problem starts... in Firefox if the PDF opens in the same window and I hit the back button, I go back to my jsp page with a blank form. Exactly what I want to happen.
In IE, the back button just reloads the PDF in the current window. If I hit back multiple times really fast I can get back or if I view my history and choose the jsp page I can go back.
Is there are known work around? It's not a real big issue but it can be annoying and not everyone is savvy enough to figure out how to get back in history.
Thank you in advance to anyone who can help.

If you could provide a URL for a dummy jsp that dispatches a dummy PDF for general testing purpose, we might be able to test it on different versions of the OS and the notorious browser.

  • Back Button not working in FireFox 4

Is anyone else having trouble with the back and forward buttons not working in FireFox 4? I installed 4 on an XP desktop and a Vista 64 laptop, and the forward and back buttons don't work on either installation. Does anyone know a fix for this? I tried deleting the "places" files in the profile and that does not help.

I am having a problem with the back button also in Firefox 4. Firefox forgets the 1st page in any new session or tab. If I open a tab to say bbc.com and navigate to guardian.com I can't click the back button to get back to bbc.com.

  • Browser 'back' button breaks flash file (firefox)

    Hey!
I've run into a frustrating problem. I've created a web app for a customer (link here), but whenever I leave the page using one of the map pins and try to return using the back button - the map pins become unresponsive and the hover-state freezes. If I reload the page it works again.
I've only encountered this problem in Firefox, and I believe that it's got something to do with the firefox focus. If I click outside the flash movie, deselecting the flash selection box - the buttons become responsive again.
    I've tried looking through the FAQ and it seems as if I've got the exact same problem as these users;
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4014321
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4121173#4121173
There's a messy workaround using jquery to select another object on page reload but that doesn't look very professional, my customer's also supposed to integrate the .swf with a cms and I'm not sure if I can get it to work.
I use Firefox 15.0.1 and Flash Player 11.4
Any pointers would be very appreciated

FF 15.0.1 with the latest FP installed and my back button works perfectly fine. The pins do not require me to reload the page to work.
It's not uncommon for a browser to require a plugin like flash to be "activated" for focus. Click doesn't typically suffer from this (and isn't for me). Keyboard however, well that makes sense. The ability to auto-activate and steal keyboard focus would introduce usability and security issues.

  • Back button does not work with some web sites to return me back too Firefox main page after concluding business on site.

After connecting to a web site and completing tasks, I use back button too return too Firefox main page. After using back button to get back to the original site log in page the back button (after repeated uses) will never get me off the web page and back to the Firefox main page. At this point the only way too get back too Firefox main page is too shut down Firefox wait 60 seconds and restart Mozilla-Firefox.

Some web pages are coded to redirect you forward to another page. In that case, when you go back to the page, Firefox redirects you forward again.
To bypass this, use the history drop-down next to the back and forward buttons. The drop-down has the most recent pages on top, and older pages below. Jump as far down the list as you can, then repeat as needed to get back to the first page.
    Does it work?

  • Sluggish go-back button

The go-back-to-previous-page button on my Safari 1.0.3(v85.0.1) has suddenly become very slow to respond. I have reset Safari and trashed preferences and the icon cache but nothing has helped. The back button on Explorer and Firefox works fine. Diagnostics find no system problems. Anyone have any ideas on this? Thanks for info.

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Before the recent updates to Firefox, clicking on the back button always brought me back to the same place on the page where I had been, but now it brings me to the top of the page. How do I restore the previous feature?

Before the recent updates to Firefox, when I would go to another page in the same window and then clickon the back button, Firefox used to bring me back to the same place on the page where I had been, but now it brings me to the top of the page, meaning that I have to laboriously scroll down to the old place. How do I restore the previous feature?

That change was made in Firefox 4, 6 months ago.
    Click-hold the unified Back / Forward button <br />
    or <br />
right-click it to get the Back / Forward history for that tab.
Or install this extension to get the old "drop-marker" button restored. <br />

  • The back button is there but never works. It didn't open in a new tab or window but the back button isn't functioning. I just downloaded Firefox 5.

Actually, all my details are in that looong question I asked. ; )
I am ready to go back to 3.6 or whatever version I had because 4 and 5 have had these issues. I tried 4 before but now that I have 5 and the same issue, I remember that I saw this before.
As I was typing this note, I looked up and saw the back button is actually working on this site. Weird.
Also, there isn't a button next to the back and forward so I can see my history. Where is that, now? Sometimes, I want to go back 3 or 4 pages at once without loading each page the slow way. Awww, what am I saying? You all know what I mean. :\
I am using Windows 7 and have been using Firefox for years, so I am familiar with it and it is my only browser of choice so I hope someone can help me. Thanks in advance.

    * If the menu bar is hidden then press and hold the Alt key down, that should make the Menu bar appear (Firefox 3.6 on Windows) (see [[Menu bar is missing]]).
    * Make sure that you have the ''Navigation Toolbar'' and other toolbars visible: View > Toolbars .
    * If items are missing then see if you can find them in the View > Toolbars > Customize window.
    * If you see the item in the Customize window then drag it back from the Customize window to the Navigation toolbar.
    * If you do not see that item then click the Restore Default Set button in the View > Toolbars > Customize window.

  • In Firefox 4, back button only goes back 1 page at a time. how can i go back further with one click?

in Firefox 3.6.10, i could click an arrow next to the back button for a drop down menu of previously visited pages. in Firefox 4, i can only go back one page at a time. has it been removed in the new version or am i just overlooking it?
in case you've taken it out, would you consider replacing it? sometime a page won't let you go back no matter how many times you hit the back arrow.
    thank you!

You can get the drop down list by either right-clicking on the back/forward buttons, or holding down the left button until the list appears.
If you want the drop-down arrow you can add it with the Back/forward dropmarker add-on - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/backforward-dropmarker

  • All of a sudden my back button does not work at all, on any site, and when I start Firefox it does not go to the home page I specified

Just a few days ago, I noticed that when I start Firefox it goes to a blank page, despite the fact that I have several times checked and rechecked under "Options" and my home page is in there. Also the back button has stopped working. I have made sure that inprivate browsing is not enabled, history is maintained etc etc

  • When I open a second Firefox browser window, the URL address window, instead of showing the URL, says "Go to a Web Site;" also, and more importantly, the "back" button is greyed out. This is a new problem, and the first Firefox window I open works fine.

After I open the first Firefox browser window, any additional window I open does not open my homepage, but opens a blank page with "New Tab" showing on the tab. An orange "Firefox" tab with a drop down arrow shows at the upper left hand corner of the screen. All of the options (File, Edit, etc.) are greyed out, however they will work if you move your cursor over them.
The URL address window says "Go to a Web Site". After I've gone to a website, the back button remains greyed out and I am not able to go back to a previous page. My RoboForm and Netcraft toolbars only show up in an abbreviate form. The add-on bar doesn't show up at all.
Again, this is a recent problem, and only happens after I've opened one browser window (which works fine) and then open additional browser windows (as few as one additional).

I had this same problem. Seems to be caused by the web developer tool bar FF extension (this started happening after a recent update to that extension). After disabling it, my FF is back to normal :)

  • After updating IE7, Firefox 3.6 no longer store history--back button in Firefox can't access previous pages.

Yesterday a security update for IE7 was automatically downloaded into my computer. Now the history feature of Firefox is working poorly. Often it doesn't save previous pages for the back button to access during an online session. The few times I've been able to navigate back to a Google search page, the search terms I've used previously are absent. However most often today, the browser doesn't even acknowledge that there were previous pages and the back button remains grayed out.

I got an email saying that Cor-el had posted a reply to my question. I don't see it on this page. Was it deleted?

  • In the new Firefox, I have no back button, no "most frequently visited" and there is no longer an option to save tabs when I close.

Many features have disappeared. There is no back button to go to the previous page. There is no "most frequently visited" icon on the toolbar. I am not asked if I want to save all my tabs when I close firefox. There is no recently bookmarked tab on the toolbar. Everything takes longer to get to. The tabs don't automatically stay open.

Firefox 4 saves the previous session automatically, so there is no longer need for the dialog asking if you want to save the current session.<br />
You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session at any time.<br />
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default <b>about:home</b> Home page.
    Another possibility is to use:
    * [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Menu_differences Firefox (Tools) > Options] > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"
Do you still have the Bookmarks Toolbar visible?
    * [[Restore the default Smart Bookmarks Folders]]
Check that you still have the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" placed on the Bookmarks Toolbar
If the menu bar is hidden then press F10 or hold down the Alt key, that should make the "Menu Bar" appear
Make sure that you have the Bookmarks Toolbar and the Navigation Toolbar visible: "View > Toolbars"
Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"
    * Check in "View > Toolbars > Customize" that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize window onto the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If you do not see the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" or other items that are missing in the toolbar palette or on a toolbar then click the "Restore Default Set" button

  • Firefox url goes grey, and back button no longer works.

Ok so most annoying problem EVER!! Ok so I have this problem where I will be running firefox, browsing the net, and then all of the sudden the url bar will grey out and only the domain root will be solid.
Once it does this, I cannot use the back button, in fact from there on out, many url's will not even show up in the navigation.
The browser works just fine then out of nowhere will start pulling this.
    An example would be
[http://www.cnatrainingcertificationclasses.com http://www.cnatrainingcertificationclasses.com]/topics-you-can-expect-in-your-cna-classes/275/ , and then the end would be grayed out. Soooo maddening
I also am running a few addons, but I need all of these addons what can I do?

  • In Firefox 3.6.10 I was able to go forward and backwards between pages without the page defaulting to the top of the page. Is there any way to prevent the page from automatically moving to the top when using the forwards and back buttons in Firefox Four?

I like to be able to navigate backwards and forwards without having to scroll down and find where I was previously. In Firefox Four, when using the forwards and back buttons, the page will automatically return to the top of the page. Is there any way to change this setting in Firefox Four to prevent it from doing that?

Thanks for the response. No Time Machine, but I probably have a backup from a few months ago on an external hard drive. :/ I guess it'd have useful history, but not if it overwrote the last 3 months or so of Awesome Bar, that might not be so great.
