This computer has the f5 key lit up. I press the key and all the keys light up. i press the key again and all the keys go dark but this key stays light. Is this normal?  can I make this f5 key not be lit all the time ? I really dont want to have only this one key on all the time its distracting
 thank you

Hi,
Sounds like very normal for this series. Other users also see that:

  • [solved] XFCE: bind custom script to backlight keys, including Notify?

    Hello, the situation is as follows:
    My (Toshiba Z30) backlight keys toggle the XFCE-brightness control popup, but they don't control the display brightness.
    I found out why: they control /sys/class/backlight/toshiba/brightness instead of /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness. I wasn't able to change that, although testing the kernel parameters acpi_backlight=vendor and acpi_osi='!Windows 2012'. That tip (bottom of the page) given in the arch wiki had no effect OR didn't even let me boot when I tried to adjust the BusID to the output of lspci...
    So I got another solution, these selfmade scripts:
    /usr/local/bin/darker
    #!/bin/bash
    CURR=`cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness`
    MIN=3
    NEW=$(($CURR-50))
    if [ $NEW -lt 5 ]
    then
    NEW=5
    fi
    echo $NEW > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
    and
    /usr/local/bin/brighter
    #!/bin/bash
    CURR=`cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness`
    MAX=`cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness`
    NEW=$(($CURR+50))
    if [ $NEW -gt $MAX ]
    then
    NEW=$MAX
    fi
    echo $NEW > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
    which work.
    Assigning these scripts to keys also works with "sudo darker" / "sudo brighter" and adding them via visudo.
    The only thing missing to make it perfect, is the combination:
    Using the default brightness keys including the XFCE onscreen notification/popup binded to those scripts. (Just assigning to the brightness keys would make me lose the on screen notifiaction/popup...)
    So how is that possible, has anyone an idea?
    Last edited by Carl Karl (2014-10-14 15:21:14)

    Thanks, that's quite good, except that multiple key-presses lead to multiple notification popups which is not sooo nice bad acceptable. (And as this is run by root, a sudo xfce4-notifyd-config is necessary to configure the notification.)
    for reference:
    /usr/local/bin/brighter
    #!/bin/bash
    CURR=`cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness`
    MAX=`cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness`
    NEW=$(($CURR+20))
    if [ $NEW -gt $MAX ]
    then
    NEW=$MAX
    fi
    echo $NEW > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
    notify-send "Backlight $(($NEW*100/$MAX)) %"
    /usr/local/bin/darker
    #!/bin/bash
    CURR=`cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness`
    MIN=3
    MAX=`cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness`
    NEW=$(($CURR-20))
    if [ $NEW -lt 5 ]
    then
    NEW=5
    fi
    echo $NEW > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
    notify-send "Backlight $(($NEW*100/$MAX)) %"
    So any idea how to avoid these multiple notifications? notify-send --help wasn't helpful for me.

    my backlight is always on,im unable to off the light,can anyone help me?

    This discussion may help.
    It mostly depends on the camera. Some cameras have a Transfer Mode, which does not attempt to charge while transferring pictures. does yours have such a setting?
    Alternatively you can try to plug a powered USB hub between the camera and the USB connector so the power is provided by the HUB rather than the iPad.
    Other than that, yes the Memory card reader may be a better option assuming your Camera uses Secure Digital (SD) type memory cards.

  • Backlight - not always turning on?

    I normally leave the backlight in Always On mode when I have it on the charger. And I leave it Always On when I plug it into my car FM transmitter thing.
    But sometimes, when I put it in the transmitter thing, the backlight never comes on. Music will play, but I have to go into the options screen and manually set it to Always On in order to have it turn back on - just touching the scroll wheel won't do it, as it normally does. In this situation, really all I'm doing is pressing the button; because the setting in the Backlight Menu is already set to Always On (the way I like it).
    Is it just me?

    ping
    I can't be the only one this is happening to, can I?
    This happens to me almost everyday. I get in to my car to start my drive and the screen lights up and it starts playing and then it fades to black.
    I remedy it by turning it off and back on.

    Please don't shout.
    Has the unit EVER been jailbroke?  Has it EVER been dropped?  Did it EVER get excessively wet?  Did you EVER load a pirated developer's version of the IOS?
    If "No" to all the above, first try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
    Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
    If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
    At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
    If you're unable to do the Restore and you have IOS-6 or lower, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • [SOLVED] Backlight keys not working

    The backlight keys on my laptop aren't working in arch. xbacklight also does not work. Both of these things work in Ubuntu. Here is my GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT:
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1 acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi=Linux radeon.modeset=1"
    When I installed Ubuntu, I had to add "acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi=Linux", although that doesn't seem to be helping here.
    in /sys/class/backlight I see acpi_video0, acpi_video1, and intel_backlight. After echoing values into all of them, only intel_backlight seems to do anything. On Ubuntu, the only thing I see in that folder is intel_backlight.
    Does anyone have any suggestions? The wiki doesn't have anything I haven't already tried.
    Last edited by gsingh93 (2013-07-23 16:02:39)

    I figured it out.
    I confirmed from Xorg.0.log that acpi_video1 was being used instead of intel_backlight. However, I had already tried the fix here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepor … =651741#73, which is also mentioned by WonderWoofy, but X server wouldn't start. I tried it again, but this time I took a look at the logs and I realized that the fix listed in the bug report has two Identifier lines, causing X server to not start. I removed the Card0 line and X started fine and I was able to control the backlight. I'll add this information to the bug report.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Option Key Always Down on New MacBook Pro (Mid 2010)

    I have a new i7 MacBook Pro 15" with 8GB of RAM. Illustrator seems to think that the option key is always held down. Shapes are always drawn from the center, and dragging objects with the pointer always copies them. This problem happens with AI CS4 and the AI CS5 Trial. I do not have this problem in Photoshop or any other CS applications that I have tried (ID, Flash). I have tried throwing away the com.adobe.illustrator.plist and the Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings folder.
    The Keyboard Viewer (System Preferences->Language & Text->Input Sources->Keyboard & Character Viewer->Input menu->Show Keyboard Viewer) does not show that the option key is held down.
    I am using an external USB extended keyboard (Apple aluminum keyboard). It also happens with the built-in keyboard of the laptop.
    Is anyone else with this model having this issue?

    I don't see that your issue can be model specific or hardware related as a problem with the option key would show up in other places too. You could try uninstalling/reinstalling illustrator, deleting the cache files wont hurt, and any preference files before you launch, so you have a brand new virgin installation. See if that helps. If not, and you might try this first, create or log in under another user and see if the same thing happens there.

  • I get a circle with a slash when I hit f8, F9 or f10 to backlight keys

    My keyboard back lighting doesn't work much but I reset PMU and PRAM then suddenly it worked. Now though, about an hour later, if I hit any of the keys I get a circle with a slash as if it is turned off, illegal, or not installed. Anybody know what it means? I have the backlight checked off in the energy manager.
    I'm confused.
    Also, the lower memory slot is kaput.
    thanks,
    Connie

    I fixed it by putting the install disk in and verifying/repairing the disc and the permissions.
    The memory slot was not repaired. I understand it was a problem with some powerbooks but the repair program ended in July 2008.

  • Wireless Keyboard Function Keys Always On

    Hi,
    I just started using my wireless keyboard and noticed that the function keys are always activated, making it impossible to turn up/down the volume, etc. How do I go back to regular mode?

    check it
    "I installed the keyboard update and unchecked "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" in Keyboard & Mouse System Preferences and everything works perfect. This is on a G5 Tower.

  • Accessibility's "Slow Keys" always turns on on its own [SOLVED](kinda)

    The "Slow Keys" feature always turns on randomly when I for example just try to mark something with the mouse, holding down the shift key, this is on XFCE4.
    In Applications Menu -> Accessories -> Accessiblity I already unchecked ALL boxes to try and disable it, but it doesn't work. What's more, when it turns on again (I notice this because it gives a little popup message) it's even still shown as "disabled" (ie check box is unchecked) in the AM->Acc->Acc config dialogue! I have to actually click it twice there (check + uncheck again) to disable it.
    I tried to just uninstall 'atk' which seemed to provide Accessibility, but that didn't work out because gtk2/gtk3 depended on it.
    Help please, how can I get rid of SlowKeys popping up once and for all?

    Interesting, I actually do use gdm for logging in.
    When I set up my Arch system I wanted to not install any gnome/kde stuff but only xfce, however, if I didn't use gdm for login manager but Slim (I think it was called, I followed the instructions on the archlinux page for that one actually) then I wouldn't have any sound in my xfce session. I was unable to find out why, alsamixer and everything seemed completely fine, yet there was not a single sound coming out, so I just went with gdm which seemed to do something magic to audio (or maybe Slim did something anti-magic).
    I just searched in /etc for "accessibility" and got several results in these files:
    1) /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/%gconf-tree.xml
    2) /etc/dconf/db/gdm.d/00-upstream-settings
    3) /etc/dconf/db/gdm.d/locks/00-upstream-settings-locks
    as well as these two whose filenames seem unlikely to be involved in the problem:
    4) /etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu
    5) /etc/xdg/menus/arch-applications.menu
    1) only seems to contain a menu structure in XML format, although it also has an entry "exec_ats" under "accessibility"->"startup"..
    2) contains this:
      [org/gnome/desktop/interface]
      toolkit-accessibility=true
    3) this, but since it's apparently a  "lock" file, I guess it is just created from 2)?:
      /org/gnome/desktop/interface/toolkit-accessibility
    4) and 5) are XML menu structures again, which just mention "xfce-accessories.directory" and "Arch-Accessibility.directory". Seem unlikely to be a cause I guess.
    I tried setting 2) to =false and commenting out the line in 3) but it didn't help.
    I noticed however, that it seemed to take 10s rather than just 6s until slowkeys triggered, but might just be my nerves .

  • 5800 backlight is always on.

    My 5800 has been working fine for about 8 months now, recently it has been cutting out randomly. Last night it locked then froze, I turned it on and off and now it works fine but the backlight never turns off so it is constantly bright.
    Very annoying because it is draining the battery, and I never know when I have got a message or anything because all the button lights are always on too.
    Any ideas on what the problem is or what I should do?
    Thanks

    may be it is bcoz of some malicious app or virus type thing... if resetting factory setting doesnt help... then try full format by *#7370#... but before formatting take backup of your data... this code format whole phone memory and reinstall phone...  also remember by restoring factory setting it is not necessary that data will be erase... but by using *#7370#, it is 100% sure that ur data will be get erased in the process...

  • Fn key always on?

    I can't seem to use any of the normal F1-F12 keys. Its like fn is always held down. I'm new to laptops so am I missing something here?
    Kinda hard to target myself in WOW this way. lol

    I have a similar problem but for me it's like the fn key is always off. If I leave the Control Panel checkbox for F keys unchecked then the fn key does nothing. The F keys control hardware regardless of whether the Fn key is pressed. For example both Fn-Ctrl-F2 and Ctrl-F2 increase brightness. If I check the box things work properly: Fn-Ctrl-F2 increases brightness and Ctrl-F2 activates the menubar. Anyone else having similar problems? Or a solution?

  • S12 FN key always on

    The FN key on my S12 is always on so that I cannot use the keyboard to write (unless I hold the FN key down to turn it off and write with normal letters).
    The laptop is new and has bareley been used, so I guess this is a software problem... I have tried pushing it down hard and making sure that it is not stuck in any way.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi and welcome... its everytime a good idea to check a different system...
     in Quickstart  you can try that...for example...
    or linux - live CD if you have the possibility to access a optical drive... or via usb-device...
    If you have the same failure with the Function- Key...
     depends not on software...
    the keyboard is faulty call for local lenovo service...

  • Backlight key presses not detected, OPTIMUS, wiki didn't help

    I am using a Razer Blade 14" with linux-ck kernel (although I have tested in the main kernel and the issue remains).
    The keyboard brightness settings keys are not detected by X at all (using xev reports no keycodes when I press them).
    However, the driver is getting that information. And in the same type as other function keys (such as sound up/down - which are detected correctly).
    I know this because, while investigating the workings of the touchpad, I ran the razer-test script found in:
    http://fxchip.net/RazerBlade/
    (slightly modified because the device ID is 0x011D in the 14").
    It distinguishes normal key presses from Macro Keys. Function keys in this laptop are macro keys. When pressing volume down, I get the following report:
    Macro keys: Razer Extra Buttons:
      Extra key: FN
    04 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
    Macro keys: 02 ea 00 00
    Macro keys: 02 00 00 00
    Macro keys: Razer Extra Buttons:
    04 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
    When pressing brightness up/down, I get the following report:
    04 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
    Macro keys: 02 70 00 00
    Macro keys: 02 00 00 00
    Macro keys: 02 6f 00 00
    Macro keys: 02 00 00 00
    Macro keys: Razer Extra Buttons:
    04 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
    (note that the last part just signals that I let go of the FN key)
    My idea was to try to find the keycodes through xev and then map them manually. However, this was unsuccessful since xev reports no input when I press brightness up/down (while volume up/down works).
    This is where I'm lost - the keyboard drivers seems to just be ignoring them.
    Any help appreciated . Let me know what I can post if it's of any help!
    Cheers,
    Rodrigo
    EDIT:
    My laptop uses optimus hardware, and I'm using the integrated Intel Graphics card.
    I have tried all the methods in the wiki but none of them worked:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/backlight#Overview
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … ter_resume.
    It's also worth noting that I do have control over the backlight with software - the FN+F8/F9 key bindings are the ones that are just completely ignored by the driver.

    Xorg normally automatically selects the backlight device. On mine it ued acpi_video0 instead of intel_backlight.

    Thanks, but the challenge is, to get nvidia prop. drivers working.
    I think, I tracked the problem down to some backlight issue, probably a firmware issue with the laptop model.
    On ubunutu, ideapad backlight modules gets loaded, on arch, it uses the intel-bl. As it stands to reason, backlight settings are too dim when starting X.
    I am about to test nvidia-bl from AUR.
