  • How can I fix repetitive 'fontd' crashes after recovery from time machine backup?

After recovery from time machine backup (Disk Utility told me to reformat my internal hard drive) i got annoying repetitive prompts from crashing 'fontd'. How can I fix it? Anyone suffering from the same disease?

    Back up all data.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them, then boot in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Boot again as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.

  • My phone is stuck in recovery mode, and iTunes will only let me restore to factory settings.  My question: Can I restore from iTunes backup after restoring to factory settings?

I attempted to update to iOS 8 and now my phone is stuck in recovery mode, and iTunes will only let me restore to factory settings.  My question: Can I restore from iTunes backup after restoring to factory settings?

    Hi, kformagg
I would say yes. I once had the same problem (iPhone 5, IOS 7) and first restored to factory settings and after that from iCloud backup.
    It worked very well.

  • Resoring partial backup after system recovery?

    HP Pavillion D4990y
    Vista Ultimate X86 at SP2
Had to do an HP System Recovery (F11 during POST).  Chose to do a partial system backup (creates *.zip files) to an external HDD and followed instructions.  After recovery, cannot restore.
This seems to be a widespread problem when trawling the WWW.
What's the trick, here?  I can get the User files back, but I surely would like to restore the software and other programs added after purchase.

Hello AlphaBeta, Anytime you do a HP Recovery Restore, it is always recommended to perform a backup first, of your important data. There is always a risk that something may go wrong when performing a HP Restore Recovery.
HP also recommends performing a destructive recovery, that will format the hard drive and wipe the hard drive clean.
I have never used the method you mention, but if you have access to some zip files, you may be able to unzip these files and gain access to the files in the zip package.
    Just some thoughts.

  • Faces thumbnails missing after recovery from time machine

I got a new harddisk in my iMac via Apple's harddisk replacement program. I recovered all my data via a Time Machine backup (from a Time Capsule). All seemed fine after recovery of backup. When firing up iPhoto after the recovery iPhoto asks for updating all the thumbnails (don't know why). After a while everything seems fine - all photos are available with thumbnails in the events view. However all Faces thumbnails are missing - all persons in the faces view are black boxes. I can see that all the faces tagging are intact - when clicking a person I can see all the tagged images as black boxes. When switching the little "Faces - Photos" control to "Photos" I can see the photos containing all the tagged persons all right. I seems like it's only the face thumbnails that are missing.
So far I have tried the following without succes:
Repaired the iPhoto database with iPhotos own tool (holding Command and Option down when starting iPhoto)
Updating the entire library from an earlier backup
Updated the faces database files from an earlier backup as explained in this post
I'm out of good ideas now - can anyone help?

Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Time Machine Backups after recent upgrade to Mountain Lion

Basically to keep a long story short - i need to take my computer in for repair tomorrow. I recently did an upgrade to Mountain Lion a day or two ago. I haven't done a Time Machine backup until today (a couple days after i upgraded to Mountain Lion) because i wanted to make sure that my previous TM backup (Snow Leopard 10.6.8) was the most up to date and best update that i could revert back to if i had any issues with Mountain Lion, or any application compatibility, etc etc.
I don't have any broken applications and it seems like Mountain Lion is running better than Snow Leopard. However, as i said - i'm taking my computer in for repair tomorrow, i would like to know that i have the most up to date Time Machine backup with the new Mountain Lion so that when i restore it back from my Time Machine backup after i get it back from repair, i won't have any issues with the migration, which could potentially lead me into more technicalities.
I have a 500GB Harddrive, with about 70GB left of free space....I did the initial backup prior to upgrading to Mountain Lion, and it upgraded 400+GB of info, now, since Mountain Lion - the first backup with Mountain Lion initially said 46GB - then it went down to 14GB by the time it was all said and done....so what exactly did it back up?
Did it back up all the necessary files to keep Mountain Lion running smoothly when i restore it back to the way it was after i get it back? Did it not back everything up that it needs to? Is it safe to erase my internal drive and do a clean installation so i can take it in, and not worry about not being able to migrate things back over or applications not working correctly?
When i get it back, i presume it will come with Mountain Lion back on it and i can just boot up into the Recovery Disk and restore it from a Time Machine backup that way, correct?
    Thanks for the help.
    - Jason

I received the same error and experienced the same issue that you have described but after performing a Time Capsule soft reset and then toggling the TM Off and then back On I was able issue a backup now and see my previous backups.
Here is the link to where I posted my fix; https://discussions.apple.com/message/19069543#19069543. Someone else had success using a different method. The only comment / complaint that I have since the ML OS X upgrade is that TM now takes at least 20 to 30 seconds before I can click/select a backup.
    I hope this helps.

  • Unable to restore backed up files after recovery

I had to do a system recovery, and in the process backed up my files.  After recovery, I updated Microsoft and HP files, installed Norton 360, Office 2007, Outlook, and Nikon photo software.  I then tried to restore my backed up files.  Every time a User Account Control box pops ups and stating an unidentified program wants to access my computer.  I press allow, User account Control box goes away but nothing else happens.  Help!

    Hey asjhawk,
If you go into the advance backup and restore function are the database on your device and on your backup the same size?
    Also you can try this.
    Open the contact list.
Press the Menu key, then click Filter.
Clear the check box beside the category.
Let us know how you make out.

  • Dv6775us HP Backup and Recovery Manager software corrupted - can't find download

I am getting an HP error message saying the HP Backup and Recovery Manager software has been corrupted and needs to be updated. For over an hour I have been frustrated trying to find where on this site to download a replacement of what was installed or an upgrade that would repair the problem.
Can anyone point me to where I can get the software? Thanks.
    HP Pavilion dv6775us
    Vista Home Advanced

Did you make a recovery disk set or usb recovery media?
If you did, then you are in luck because  that is the software that can be used to reinstall the Recovery manager.
The downside is that you will have to do a  factory image recovery to reinstall the software.  A recovery is a destructive process, unlike a Windows stystem restore. A recovery will mean that you  will needto save all of your data externally  to avoid losing it and reinstall all of your programs after the recovery is complete.

  • Need clarification for cold backup and recovery

    Hello Everyone ..
I have much confusion on cold backup and recovery topic.
Already i posted a scanario regarding this and i want to know some clarity points to understand.
    1. I had cold backup two days before
    2. I am creating an object *(EMP)* and inserting some records then issue log switch continiously.
    3. Manually i removed all physical files (datafiles , control files , log files , redolog files ...)
    4. then i issued STARTUP FORCE MOUNT;
    5. here i am getting error identifying control file.
    6. cold backup two days before all files restored
    6. then i issue recover database using backup controlfile until cancel;
    7. i am trying to issue select * from emp; i am getting error
    select * from emp
    *ERROR at line 1:
ORA-00942: table or view does not existMy QUESTION IS
After cold backup finished , i created emp table ..
when restoring old back " There is no emp table"
*- then , can i recover emp table ? - If so , please explain about this ..*
    Note : REF - LINK https://forums.oracle.com/forums/message.jspa?messageID=11056341#11056341
    - Above link says what i did ? . In this thread i am asking concept & logic ..
please do NOT consider as "*DUPLICATE*"

When you recover the database using backup controlfile until cancel, you have to apply archived logs. Did you apply all of them?
If the create command was in the online redo, not yet archived, and you lost the online redo, then you won't have it. This is why you want to have redo multiplexed, it is a critical piece.
In some recovery scenarios, if you haven't lost the online redo, you need to specify those files as if they were archives.
It is normally easier to just be sure you have the latest controlfiles and let Oracle figure it out automatically (which is why you want to use online RMAN backups rather than cold backups). But yes, it is important to understand what is going on for different scenarios. I used to have manual standbys, and one of the disaster instruction sets explained to try to get online redo over to the standby to lose as few transactions as possible. That could still be useful for some snapshot hardware type scenarios, assuming the business is too cheap to do proper failovers.

why there is a need for standby here? you mean to say standby db?
what i exactly need is , whether i will be making use of archivelogs which are all archived during that backup period (in mount stage) after some days, if i face any problem with the PRODUCTION Database..

  • Dell Inprision 2330 Backup and Recovery error message 0x4001100200001005

A week ago, there were problems with the computer Dell Inprision 2330, and I'm using a Dell Backup and Recovery to restore the disk C to the image stored on the dvd disks. 3 days ago the computer began to hang when windows starts. I decided again to restore the system with dvd, but this time got the error message 0x4001100200001005.
Tried to restore the image to another drive, but the error appears again.
Other recovery media then dvd-disks "dell backup and recovery" I don't have.
    Please help.

I was very disappointed with this buggy system recovery. After I got tired of trying to restore the system, I found a post "Download Windows 8.1 Retail and OEM.iso". Did everything according to instructions. Now the computer is running. Activation performed automatically.
Recovery Media disks thrown in the trash.

i am experiencing low battery backup after upgrade to OS X Mavericks

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

  • After recovery via DFU, I'm unable to get beyond the apple sign.

    Hi,
I have tried to recover my iPhone 3gs in every possible way.
Last resort seemd to be via DFU mode. The whole process looks good and runs withou any errors.
After recovery is done the iPhone appears in iTunes again, but the phone is not getting beyond the apple.
When I then try to restore the phone from backup or even try to set it up as a new phone, I get "iTunes could not restore the iPhone "XXX" because an error occurred.
When I try to switch it off using the wake+home button, I never se the slider again that would enable me to turn the iPhone off.
Any other methods. I don't care about lost data etc. since it can all get recovered from Address Book and iCal etc.
I just need to get to a point where I can access the phone again.
Your help is VERY much appreciated.

I am having the exact issue as yours, but, I fixed this issue myself and I would like to help many of those suffering from this issue to not be treated by Apple -- when I woke up in the morning I found my iPhone 4 was in "Upgrade to iOS6" mode on the moring that I planed to travel -- my alarm is still alarming me to wake up but the phone could not be used anymore, so fortunately I have backup phone to switch the sim-card to. When I am back home I went to a local "Short Hills" apple store Genius Bar and the staff told me that it could not be fixed, the only way to resolve this was to pay $150 for "Replacement" for a refurbished iPhone - I didn't believe him! My home PC/iTunes can detecte my phone, but the Genius Bar staff said it can't be deteted. I tried many different ways and finally I came up the followings which fixed by iPHone: 1) if you need to backup your stuff within the iPHone, you can use iTools from your PC; 2) Install the latest iTunes; 3) Try to recovery your iphone with iTunes several times and to see if it could be fortunately restored, Pay attention to the error messages, I got (-1) and (3194) which are ok, if they all are not working, then perform the last: 4) download the latest firmware for your version of your phone, such as iphone 4,5, GSM, CDMA, etc and save it into your PC; 5) perform a recovery mode from iTunes, but this time, you are pressing down the "Shift" key while you are clicking the "Recovery iPhone" from your iTunes, it will pop up a window to ask you to upload the firmware, you then select that downloaded firmware and it should fixed you problem and your iPhone will be just like brand new from Apple manufacture! Good luck! -- I have several negative experience with Genius Bar -- they are using refurbished phone with much older screen life LCD to replace my warrenty new phone -- this is apple the policy which are being complaied worldwide!!!! If I had choice, I would not have been using iPhone!

  • Backup and recovery a tablespace

    Hi all,
I recently started reading about oracle backup and recovery concepts, and  I needed to understand what is happening where we put a tablespace to a backup mode (alter tablespace tablespace_name begin backup) ?
    thanks for help

Three things happen when you put a tablespace in hot backup mode:
    1. A checkpoint is issued, so that dirty blocks belonging to that tablespace are flushed to disk
    2. The header of the datafiles associated with the tablespace are locked from further update by CKPT.
    3. The first insert/update/delete that affects a data block that is part of the tablespace being backed up, after the 'begin backup' command is issued, causes the entire block to be written to the online redo logs. Second and subsequent changes generate the same amount as redo as normal, though.
That's it. As Hemant mentions, the really important bit is number 2 in that list: whilst the header of the datafile(s) is locked, the datafiles themselves are not, and are written to as much as they always are. The idea that somehow the datafiles are not written to and that the redo logs are the only place that stuff is written to during the backup is completely and utterly wrong. CKPT is not allowed to write to the header, because that way, we know the earliest "age" of the datafile copy when it went into backup mode, and thus know the point from which redo needs to be applied during a recovery. But DBWR writes to the rest of the datafile perfectly normally.
Number 3 is also important, because it's why we don't leave tablespaces in hot backup mode more than we can help: the amount of redo generated increases because we need a 'starter image' for any block that's modified during the backup.
