Backup ALL Service Applications thru Backup-SPFarm

I am using the following command to backup ALL service applications:
Backup-SPFarm -Directory <BackupFolder> -BackupMethod {Full | Differential} -Item "Farm\Shared Service Applications" [-Verbose]
This is from an msdn article here ...
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee748601.aspx
It is throwing an error for the "Farm\Shared Service Applications" saying that it is not found.  How do I figure out what I have to put in here to make this command work?
Thanks.

Based on the example mentioned in the msdn article you have typed in the same thing farm\shared service application
That is an example. You need to specify your service application name -> for example it may be "ManagedMetadataServiceApplication"
Try that and see how you go.

  • Getting List of all deployed applications thru WebService..

    Hello All,
I want to get the list of all deployed applications and components thru webservice..
How can I achieve the above requirement... any suggestions??
    Thanks & regards,
    Amol.

    Hi Anil,
    Thanks for the links..
But I have already tried this. Will tell u what I have done..
1)Created DC of type EJB. Added "com.sap.exception" and "tc/wd/webdynpro" as Used DC. So at the design time I am able to get the IWDDeployableObject APIs.
2)Created DC for EAR. Added above EJB module and in the reference both the reference targets are mentioned. Out of which "com.sap.exception" is library reference while "tc/wd/webdynpro" is service reference..
Now when I build the projects, both are built. But at the time of deploymeny it throws an error :
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/sap/tc/webdynpro/services/sal/deployment/api/IWDDeployableObject
So I think I should create another DC of type external libray add those required JAR filed... as EJB container might not able to understand webdynpro service references..
    Is my understanding correct?
    Thanks,
    Amol

  • Replicate All Service Application into two Application Servers

    Hi All,
I want to replicate all the service applications into another application server in order to configure HA.
we are having two servers having single farm.
    Please Help..!!

    Install SharePoint on server 2
Join Server 2 to the farm
Activate the services on server 2.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee704549(v=office.14).aspx
Most service applications can be run on multiple servers (and are designed to). The exception is the User Profile Application Synchronisation Service, which can only run on one server in a farm at a time.

  • Which sharepoint service applications & services are required for Project server 2013 to work fine.

    HI,
    Can any one help me,
I am planning to install project server 2013,  what are the service applications and Services ( Manage services on server in central admin ) in sharepoint  are required for project server 2013 to work fine, so that i will run only  service
application and services to increase server performance..i don't want to configure all service applications  when i  am configuring.
    Thanks in Advance..

    Hi Vijay,
If you are installing Project Server on SharePoint farm, You need to start the service Project Application Service which would be available after you install project Server 2013.
For Project Server Reporting you need to start Excel service and Secure Store service.

  • Changing the accounts used to run Service Applications

We would like to install SharePoint 2013 using seperate accounts for different service apps (meaning seperate App Pools, presumably) Is there a concensus on what is the better approach:
1.Create the basic Sharepoint config using AutoSPInstaller, but since it does not permit you to use seperate accounts per SA, we either want to create them automatically using the script to use a single services, then change the App Pools used by the SA
later on through PowerShellby creating a new AP then reassigning the SA .
    2. Create the SA post AutoSPInstaller using a stand-alone script.Thoughts?
Is there a reason why most guides specify using the same service account (and App Pool) for all service applications these days even for high security environments?

Hi, the biggest reason to not use too many app pools is for resources. Each App Pool uses quite a bit.
The max App Pools per farm is 20 if i remember correctly. (SP2010) Not sure if it is the same on SP2013.
i Prefer doing it via SPAutoInstaller. Certain SA's you might want to do manually. i Usually do UPS manually

  • Backup-SPFarm for PowerPivot Service Application

    Hi
I am using Backup-SPFarm PowerShell cmdlet to take a backup of my service applications.
I am able to take the backup of all my services applications except PowerPivot Service Application.
    Below is my command:
Backup-SPFarm -Directory $backupSAFolder -BackupMethod Full -Item "Farm\Shared Services\Shared Services Applications\SQL Server PowerPivot Service Application"
Error:  Item Farm\Shared Services\Shared Services Applications\SQL Server PowerPivot Service Application not found.
I also cross checked with the correct Application service name (to check if i am not doing any typo mistake) using
Get-SPServiceApplication cmdlet. see the screenshot below.
    Could somebody help me please.
    My name is yogendra

You just need to take backup of service application databases from SQL server

    2) Backup, Copy, Restore the Databases
The “SharePoint database-attach upgrade” process is a sequence of steps to back up, copy, and restore PowerPivot related content and service application databases to the SharePoint 2013 farm.
Set Database to read-only: In SQL Server Management Studio, right-click the database name and click
Properties. On the Options page, set the
    Database read-Only property to
    True.
Back up: Back up each content database and service application database that you want to migrate to the SharePoint 2013 farm. In SQL Server Management Studio, right-click the database name, click
    Tasks, and click Back up.
File copy the database backup files (.bak) to the desired destination server.
Restore: Restore the databases to the destination SQL Server Database Engine. This step can be completed using SQL Server Management Studio.
Set Database to read-write: Set the
    Database read-Only to False.
Migrate Schedules option1: SharePoint farm administrator
In the SharePoint 2013 Management Run the Set-PowerPivotServiceApplication cmdlet with the
-StartMigratingRefreshSchedules switch to enable automatic on demand schedule migration
. The following Windows PowerShell script assumes that there is only one PowerPivot service application.
    $app=Get-PowerPivotServiceApplication
    Set-PowerPivotServiceApplication $app -StartMigratingRefreshSchedules
After the Windows PowerShell script is run, the schedules are active and the schedules will run at the next appropriate time. However, the status one the schedule refresh page is not enabled. When the schedule runs the first time it will be migrated and
on the schedule refresh page, Enabled will be true.
If you want to check the current value of the StartMigratingRefreshSchedules property, run the following PowerShell script. The Script loops through all PowerPivot service application objects and display the name and property values:
    $apps = Get-PowerPivotServiceApplication
    foreach ($app in $apps){}
    Get-PowerPivotServiceApplication $appp | format-table -property displayname,id,StartMigratingRefreshSchedules

  • If there is an error in backup-spfarm can i still use for farm restore

When I execute backup-spfarm I get a message that the backup failed.  In the logs there are several errors all relating specifically to search topology.  I would love to do a backup and exclude search since I feel I can rebuild that fairly easily
if the need arrises. So my question is: Would it be supported to use this backup file to restore the farm knowing full well that I will have to manually configure the search application.  It looks like everything else gets backed up without issue.
    Steven Albrecht
    Steven Albrecht

    Hi Steven,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to use the backup file which was failed in the backup to restore the farm.
Per my knowledge, the file cannot be used to restore the farm because the backup process is failed with many errors. We cannot make sure that everything except the Search Service Application is backed up well.
I recommend to re-backup the farm without the Search Service Application to see if the issue still occurs.
    Thanks,

  • Backup using Backup-SPFarm alongside SQL backups

    Hi all,
At present I have SharePoint 2010 running on a server with it's databases off on a SQL server that hosts not only the SharePoint databases but a load more as well.  I have full and transaction log backups of the databases running via the native SQL
tools, so the databases for SharePoint are covered.
Knowing that this doesn't cover me in a disaster from the SharePoint side I'm going to use Backup-SPFarm as well, but in my testing I've noticed that Backup-SPFarm and SQL native backups get into a bit of an argument when it comes to diff backups:
"The previous full SQL backup for the database Search_Service_Application_LinksStoreDB_28ce0f29952746c2931decf12e91a0e1 was performed by another backup tool and may not be restored correctly."
So what I'm currently planning on doing is leaving SQL to handle the database level backups, and to use Backup-SPFarm with the configurationonly switch.  That way in the event of an emergency I would restore the dbs and then restore the SP backup.
My question really is then, will this work?  Is doing the Backup-SPFarm with configurationonly switch plus the SQL backups (plus a backup of the VM running SharePoint to get web.configs etc) enough, or does running configurationonly actually stop something
else essential from backing up as well that I haven't now accounted for?
    Many thanks,
    Luke

The OP's question was about Backup-SPFarm with the -configurationonly switch. In that case, Backup-SPFarm certainly does not do "full/incremental SQL database backups," and cannot "replace the standard SQL backup tools for SharePoint databases."
Backup-SPFarm -configurationonly has significant limitations and cannot be used as your only form of farm configuration backup. (Limitations are detailed
    here.)
In regards to backing up VMs, backing up VMs *is* supposed to be supported in certain contexts. According to
Technet, "you can create a warm standby solution by making sure that you consistently and frequently create virtual images of the servers in your farm that you ship to a secondary location."
I discussed this very question with a Microsoft PFE who said that using VM snapshots as a disaster-recovery component is not supported. (He referenced
this article.) I asked him about the conflict between the article and TechNet, and he said that TechNet is authoritative.
The key is that your snapshots must be taken of the entire SharePoint stack with all your farm servers and SQL shut down. This limitation means that content freshness will be an issue on restore, but in my opinion, it should be possible to find a DR solution
that utilizes a combination of cold VM snapshots and content freshening from content DB backups.
It would need careful testing for your specific environment, however.

  • Is one application pool preferred for all sharepoint service applications(

is one application pool preferred for all SharePoint service applications ?
I have a three-tier architected SP 2013 small farm (NLT, 2 wfe, 1 app server, 1 db server). All services will be use (Secure Store,Service Application, Managed Metadata Service Application, Search Service Application,User Profile Service Application,App
    Management Service Application,Workflow Manager,Excel Service Application,BI Reporting Service Application,Power Pivot Service,Performance Point,Visio Services,BCS Service application)
I am unclear on the following:
which servers should host which service ? and why ?
Is one application pool account preferred for all SP service Applications ? if not which service applications should be logically group ? and why ?

Creating additional application pools requires more RAM memory.  About 100-150 MB per app pool.  But it also keeps things happening in one app pool from affecting another.  So normally you create additional app pools when you want to maintain
higher service levels on one component versus another.  For example.  Let's assume that your service levels designate that you could survive a 3 hour outage of Search but that Managed metadata must be constantly available with minimal downtime.  Then
you would put Search and MMS in separate App Pools.  Otherwise there is no real advantage to splitting them up.
Services that are accessed directly by user request, like Search Query, Managed metadata, user profile should go on the Web Front ends.  Services that process heavier intermittent loads are normally placed on a dedicated application server to keep them
from affecting overall performance, for example Excel Services.  But its more of an art form rather than a science and depends a lot on your performance needs, your hardware, and your usage.

  • How can a workstation client get all tuxedo application service names?

Which API ATMI C call returns all tuxedo advertised application service names to the client? Is there any way to browse also all running applications?

The Jolt product that allows Java applications to make use of Tuxedo offers
a metadata repository that allows an application to store and retrieve
information about Tuxedo parameters. This is described at
    http://e-docs.bea.com/tuxedo/tux81/jdg/dvrepos.htm
The release of Tuxedo currently under development, Tuxedo 9.0, will offer
similar functionality in the Tuxedo product itself.
The TM_MIB T_SERVICE class does not offer the ability to obtain detailed
service parameter information, since this information is not stored as part
of the bulletin board. The T_SERVICE class does offer the ability to obtain
the buffer type(s) that a service accepts by looking at the value of the
TA_BUFTYPE parameter. It is not mandatory to specify a BUFTYPE when
configuring a service in the UBBCONFIG file. If this parameter is omitted,
its value will default to ALL, and Tuxedo will allow any buffer type to be
sent to the application service. However, the application logic is likely
to be expecting a specific buffer type or types and is likely to report an
error if the service is sent a buffer of an unexpected type.

The issue has to do with the SQL statement just prior to the exception:

    declare @p5 int
    set @p5=NULL
    exec sp_executesql N'declare @db_user_name sysname

    select @p4, @p5
I highlighted the row in red causing the issue. For some reason SharePoint during the Search Restore process try’s to delete the user “------\sp2013uatfarmacct” from the database Search_Service_Application_DB_60bb9889222841aa94f59aed71349a6b
And re-add them again.  But the reason for the failure is because the user “------\sp2013uatfarmacct” is the owner of the database role “SPSearchDBAdmin”, so it cant.
I checked all other Service databases that contain the role SPSearchDBAdmin and they all correctly have the owner as dbo
    NOT ------\sp2013uatfarmacct.
Further checking the SQL trace log a SQL batch is executed at 12/18/2014 11:19:59.790 that states the following:
    -- Drop existing role members

    IF  EXISTS (SELECT * FROM sys.database_principals WHERE name = N'SPSearchDBAdmin' AND type = 'R')
    DROP ROLE [SPSearchDBAdmin]
    CREATE ROLE [SPSearchDBAdmin]
I highlighted the statement in red that is eventually causing the SP restore to fail. For some unknown reason to me when this statement is executed the new ROLE SPSearchDBAdmin owner is -----\sp2013uatfarmacct
    instead of dbo.
As a test I executed via SQL Management Studio “CREATE ROLE [SPSearchDBAdmin]” and it correctly created the owner as dbo.
So the problem and my question is why when the SP Search Service is restored is the ROLE SPSearchDBAdmin owner being set to “-----\ sp2013uatfarmacct”, which in turn seems to be causing the restore failure?

    Hi!
I believe it is trying to delete a user who owns the schema of the database. You can try changing the schema owner to some other user like "dbo", and then drop the first user.
Below are a few links that can help you with much more details.

Beside windows and others application, all apple application i.e keynote, pages, numbers, mail can't open!

    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.

  • New SSRS 2012 Service Application Fails to Upgrade ReportServer Database

    Hi -
I am in the middle of an SSRS upgrade from 2008R2 to 2012, SP 2010 integrated, without upgrading the database engine. This is on my DEV environment. I am running into problems when I add the new SQL Server Reporting Services Service Application through Central
Administration.  I am keying in the previous db names, so they will be upgraded, "ReportServer". After clicking OK, a screen pops up notifying me that "ReportServer" and "ReportServerTempDB" will be upgraded. So far so good
right? Well as it is processing, it returns with the error found at the bottom:
The correlationID is nowhere to be found in the ULS Logs. I turned on Verbose logging and still no luck. I have restored the ReportServer database from a backup from 3 days ago and tried again. Same error, different correlation ID, not found
in ULS logs. NOTE: I first encountered a specific permissions error for the service account I was using.  That was nice and descriptive :). Changed the permissions to db_owner and sys_admin (for overkill) and now this non-descriptive error appears.  I
    have a few questions:
    1. I have gone through the same process of adding a new service application and let a new set of the 3 SSRS db's be created with a different name. But that means I lose all previous subscriptions, data source connections
to the rdls, etc.  Is there a way to port/migrate over the previous ReportServer db contents to the newly created db's? I tried a simple SSIS transfer of each table, and as expected I immediately received FK contraint errors, ID Inserts and so forth.
    2. Why wouldn't the correlation ID be showing up with verbose tracking?
    3. Does anyone know common reasons why the previous RS databases would not be successfully upgraded???
Thank you for any and all help. I am in the position of being able to roll back to snapshots created Thursday morning of the entire SP farm, but we are now at the point of having consultant work being lost so I am really trying hard to get this upgrade to
be successful and done in our DEV environment.

I restored to a backup of the databases REportServer and ReportServerTempDB that I took last night before I tried to manually update them with writing out the SQL File via Powershell.  I tried to  have the Service Application upgrade the database
again, knowing it would fail, which it did, and am now reviewing the logs in the location you mentioned above.  For the 2 minutes that the failure could have happened during, all I see is OWSTIMER.EXE (0x07CC)   errors, which I'm fairly positive
are unrelated, mainly cause they keep occurring round the clock and a caching error? Again, I am trying to simply find out why the Service Application upgrade the db's and have reverted back to a previous state. I felt the collation errors i was troubleshooting
above were too far down the rabbit hole.
