Backup-closing backup package

For some reason, backup now hangs at the "closing backup package" point.  Any ideas?
Thanks,
Joe

Oh, oh, I know!
ask Me!
With a Mac OS X Server, You can run Time Machine on the Server. It backs up every locally-attached drive by default. That means the Users folder, representing all Server-resident User files, on whatever drive, gets backed up, and the permissions are maintained perfectly. It also seems to work very hard to backup up the LDAP database automatically, if you are using that feature.
On older versions, be sure to disable Spotlight Indexing on the Backup Drive itself. Time Machine already uses Spotlight to do a special index, and having it be busy computing the "regular" spotlight index confuses it.
You need to check from Time-to-time that the latest backup was within the last hour, to be sure Time Machine did not get "stuck". Other than that, it just works.
To restore, log on to the server as the Admin, navigate to the folder you want to restore, and Invoke Time Machine (except for iPhoto and Mail, which use special procedures to restore their databases).

  • Restoring Sol10 using whole disk backup package (Acronis)

Anyone ever tried backing up the disk that Sol 10 is installed on
using a whole disk backup package?
I've tried doing it using Acronis backup which allows you to boot from
CD, and backup to USB hard drive. Anyway, it seemed to work when I
    restored it.
Only problem is when the machine now boots it seems to run some sort
of Acronis pre-boot and then GRUB appears on the screen but then it
    hangs.
Any ideas at all? I'm just wondering if just the boot sector/bit needs
    to be fixed?

Sounds like either the device links are incorrect, or that it got installed onto a different partition after the recover.
If you haven't already, you could try and boot to failsafe (or from CD/network), mount the root-disk under /a and run devfsadm -R /a .
Never tried acronis, so i don't know exactly how it functions.

    Hi,

How do i backup my package that contain all the Dictionary Tables, Data Element, Domain, Function Module and of cause ABAP Program?

    Hi,
    Please try this.
In SE80, double click on the screen number and then in the menu, Utilities -> More Utilities -> Upload/Download -> Download option.
Save it as a text file and then repeat the same process in the target system but this time use upload option.
Make sure you are in edit mode of the screen while uploading the same text file on the target system.

  • [Closed]Downgradeing package isn't availible in out-off sync mirror

OK I admit this is a bit of a stupid question, but still...
    I've done
    pacman -Scc
not knowing that I might need it again. But I do.
I have reason to believe that Qt4.5 is a root of all recent problems I had. (BTW I use KDEmod4.2.1)
    To shortly list my problems:
-No KHotKeys and no possibility to add a hotkey in system settings-> input actions.
-having problems with locale, can't sett it on si_SL thus sometimes having a "weird fonts", especially with special characters as č š ž. But not always I can type this normally, but
sometimes my y and z get switched and in HTML my č š ž aren't displayed properly, and I know for the fact that it should work as last time I edited that html file I was able to write č, š ž and get it
appear properly. Sorry it's because Kate is set to westrn instead of UTF-8 by default so it has nothing to do with Qt.
-No system notification if I press capslock even if I sett it to notify me. Not sure if it's a Qt related problem.
    (It's either that I somehow install a Qt4.4 or to try a SVN or the newest KDE which is coded with Qt4.5 in mind;
I just don't know how stable is the testing / unstable or even SVN KDE. I do need Arch for my day-to-day work)
I did consult the Arch Wiki and tried almost every out off sync mirror and the Package search but I couldn't found Qt4.4 version.
    Any help is welcome.
    thanks in advance.

Damn! That didn't solved any of my problems.
I'm beginning to think that my problems with Arch are more deep and go back to installation.
I tried just about everything and I still don't have a "normally" working OS.
Sorry that I made you upload the Qt4.4 as it turns out that my problems are probably in me and not in the Qt, KDE or Arch

  • Do I need to backup my pics and email etc with iCloud backup or would it delete my data?

I have an ipad (3rd gen)  and an iPod (5th gen) I use the ipad for school as in my school instead of books and copies. I use my ipad for leisure and taking photos and videos and Facebook etc etc. both of the devices are using the same account. I only have the free 5GB backup package. I need the storage for my ipad school things as if I lose them..that's all my schoolwork..gone. I have recently taken a lot of photos with my iPod and downloaded a lot of games. Today a notification popped up saying that I'd almost run out of iCloud backup and that I could delete some of the backup on apps etc. so that's what I did and it barely made a dent in the backup figures. I then decided to delete most of my photos just so I'd have some more space for Facebook but it turns out that if you delete your photos, it doesn't actually result in a solution to the backup problem. So what I'm wondering is.. Do I really need to backup my pictures or email etc a and just leave the backup for my ipad? Also, when I go into Settings=>iCloud=>Storage & Backup=>Manage Storage=>this iPod at the bottom of the page there's a button that says "delete backup". I'm wondering if it would help my situation or something. Thanks in advance :)

You don't need to back up your photos to iCloud if you don't want to.  If you don't, be sure to import them (and your videos) to your computer so they are backed up there, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.  You can then turn Camera Roll off under Backup Options.  This article explains other options for managing and reducing your iCloud storage: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4847.
If you tap Delete Backup in Manage Storage>your device, it will permanently delete the backup from iCloud.  It won't do anything to the data currently on your device, but it does put you at risk until you create a new backup.

  • Where does iTunes put iPhone backups in a PC (Windows 7)?

Where does iTunes put iPhone backups in a PC (Windows 7)?

    ChrisJ4203 wrote:
Apps are not backed up, app data is. Apps are already located in iTunes and thus do not need to be backed up. See this support document for information about what is backed up via iTunes.
Are you sure about that, because when I backed up my iPad Mini w/7.0.4 and the newest iTunes, it made a 10gb Backup, which is pretty huge considering I only have a "16" Gb Slate iPad (More Like 13.5 Gb).
When I restored it after Jailbreaking, it moved ALL of the Apps I had bought back in - A neat trick if the Apps themselves are not part of the Backup package- Because the apps had NOT been backed up into iTunes on that PC.
iOS 6 did NOT restore my Apps, even though it did restore my folders.

  • Iphoto and GarageBand broken since restore from backup

My main problem now is getting iPhoto and GarageBand to work. But below is some history of my problem:
My MackBook was returned today from the fixers. I had previously created an account for the engineers and wiped all the others. When I used Backup to restore it restored my account to the current engineers account! keeping the login name and password for the engineers account... at this stage a look in the finder showed me that only my account had been restored/backed up.. and as just mentioned with the wrong login details!!!!
I have resolved to wipe and reinstall OSX and then try to restore...... NO LUCK, NO copy of backup to restore from!!!! And I could not remember my airport pw (idiot!!) so couldn't download it!
Righty ho, I have the Web, Email and itunes working now.
But iPhoto & GarageBand do not start at all. What can I do to fix?
Btw I have reinstalled iPhoto to no avail.

Apple's tech support advised me to do an 'erase and install'. Then to try to perform a restore within Backup. If that failed I was asked to call back for further assistance. I was ok though and didn't need further help.
In a step by step way how things got fixed:
I booted from my OSX install disks that came with the computer, chose the option to erase the HD and perform a fresh install.
Installed the system and the bundled apps. (I did a custom install to choose only the software I wanted)
I then ran software update and got the mac up to date. Once done I tested all the Apple apps.. Restored my .mac data... all was now working YIPPIE!!!.
After that I hunted down and installed all 3rd party apps I had been using.
I used "http://www.versiontracker.com/macintel/" ...most apps I use were bought online or freeware, and the versiontracker website is the easiest route to find them all again.
I now had to get my data back. BackUp still showed it was missing although I knew my backed up files were valid.
I checked those backed up files were safe by right clicking on one of my backup packages (created by Apple's BackUp) and chose view package contents.
I then navigated my way to the "sparse image" file which will open just as a disk image (.dmg) would. Inside that I found my data from my user folder (which BackUp had reported not there). Opened up several files of various types to check such as jpegs, movies, text files and pdfs. I was not aiming to restore any applications from this back up.
I manually copied my files from the backup and put them in their relevant folders. I only copied things like my pics, movies, documents.
Ran "Disk Utility" and repaired permissions on my HD.
I Shut the Mac down and then booted up, logged in and all was fine and dandy.

  • Replace iDisk backups with Dropbox?

Every day Backup automatically backs up a whole bunch of key files to my iDisk.  When I use Finder to look at iDisk's contents, I see it creates a Full Backup Package once a month (as I've asked it to) and then Incremental Packages every day.  But even though I've set it for "Backups after 30 days will be recycled", I see that there are several months worth of backups in there.  This raises a concern for me.
I'm about to set Dropbox as my daily backup location replacement for iDisk.  But if Backup keeps adding a constantly growing amount of backups with no limit, it will eventually fill up my Dropbox space.  Is there some way I can get Backup to limit how many GB it sends to Dropbox?

You may want to do some comparisons. Type "DropBox vs Wuala" into Google for instance.

  • HELP: the nightmare has happened with Apple Backup 3.1.2

OK, I've got a situation here. Bought an external 1TB backup drive. Used Apple's Backup 3.1.2, which comes with the .mac account to backup my laptop twice a week. The first backup was a full one, followed by incremental backups. I've set it up to back up my WHOLE system drive.
So far so good. Yesterday, I backed up the system again. Finished successfully. Then I reinstalled my laptop, wiped the whole machine and put OSX10.4.11 back on. Reinstalled Backup 3.1.2 and wanted to restore my home folder using my latest backup. Double-click the file. Restore window opens, shows the system, all apps, library, users etc.
BUT, the users folder does not contain my old home folder anymore. AAAARRRGGGHHHKKKK! OK, tried not to panic, checked older backups. Same. Checked them all. Everything shows up. Except my home folder.
OK, thought I must have un-ticked my home folder by accident when setting up the backups. But I a am as sure as I can be that I did not do a mistake.
Also, the file size of the backup packages (210GB) is the same size as my previous system (60GB), incl my home folder (ca. 150GB)....
If I had backed up everything except my home folder, the back up file should be a lot smaller!
So, I actually have hope that my precious home folder is actually still in there somewhere. But how do I access the files?
Has anyone had similar problems? Does anyone know what to do???
Thanks you sooooo much for you help!

  • Backup app problems

OK. Because Backup was hanging at "Completing backup package...", I trashed the two "apple.backup..." preference files. Then I started Backup and I got the "Trial limit exceeded" message with instructions saying I had to subscribe to MobileMe to go beyond that limit. MobileMe is gone, so now I'm stuck.

As the others have said, Backup's days are gone. It was never very good in the first place, and its only strength was that it was the only easy way to back up to your iDisk. Without an iDisk, it's just not worth using, even if it were working.
If you need to get access to files in old Backup backups, you can control-click the backup file and choose Show Package Contents, then sort through the files manually.
For making new backups, use Time Machine and/or Carbon Copy Cloner or something similar. (I recommend using two different backup programs to maintain a minimum of two separate backups.)

  • Lacie ethernet disk mini as a network backup

I am not a real techie. I have an airport extreme network with an airport express to extend the reception range in the house. I bought a Lacie ethernet disk mini drive. I hooked it up via ethernet cable to the airport express and use it as a wireless backup for the 3 laptops in our family. I put it in the startup for all the laptops so that it shows right up on the desktop when the computer boots. I have been using it about a year or so and it works well. It can be a little slow when I try and back up my sons 47 gigs of photos. I do not know if I even have it hooked up correctly or the best way. Any suggestions? Anyone with similar setups?

I may not be the expert but it seems to work. I manually connected to the drive by using the "GO" menu, "Connect to Server", hit the "Browse" button, select "Network", then select the drive, authenticate with password, etc. and it should show up on your desketop.
Next open system preferences, go to accounts, then Login items. Either drag the icon for the drive into the box, or hit the plus box, find the icon and select it. I have done this on the three laptops and 3 desk tops at our home. It works fine. When you start up the computer it automatically shows up on the desktop. I use it to back up files, mostly music and photos. It can be a very slow back up. I think that is more the problem of "backup". I find that I have to break the backup packages into lots of smaller packages, instead of one hugh folder like Home.
I am a little compulsive about backing these things up. I do not know what amount of data you have. I also use mediamax.com. THey give you 25 gigs of free backup space. It is slow and prone to errors but eventually I got most of my stuff on there also.
I am still looking if someone more techie than I knows if the way I am using my network drive it the best way...
    steve
That's exactly what I want to do. I don't like having
to manually connect to the server every time I
    startup the computer.
Can you tell me how to do it? What did you put in
"startup" and where is "startup"? Thanks!

  • Cloud backup of Elements 13 pictures

I have my pictures organized in Elements 13. Right now I backup the pictures to local hard drives. I want to change to cloud backup but at the same time I want to access the pictures using the same way I have them organized in Elements.  There are many cloud backup packages such as Carbonite, crashplan, etc. They simply backup the way the pictures are stored on my "C" hard drive. Does Adobe have a cloud backup plan which will backup my pictures and at the same preserve the Elements organization and at the same time allow access over the internet so that I can easily show pictures to others.

if anyone knows a way to take cloud backups of my iPhoto library, but to copy only the jpgs, not the raw files?
The really easy way is to upload the shots to a photo site like Flickr or SmugMug. But bear in mind that the Raws will be represented only by your iPhoto Previews.
There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.

  • Will time capsule backup my pc?

Will Time Capsule backup my pc?  Do I need a separate external hard drive and genie pro?

Time capsule is a router with a hard disk inside. .it offers SMB access.
There is no backup software in the TC.. it is Time Machine in the Mac that does the work.
For PC you can use any backup package you like that can deal with network drive.. vast majority do so.. even the crappy windows one.
But the warning is there when you mix TM and data on a mixed network you can get into trouble from the TM side.. the file storage from PC is fine.

  • Does old "Backup" program work with Leopard?

I want to install Leopard as a full clean "wipe out the HD" install. Once I do that, I have to bring back in everything. Most of it will be easy: dotmac will bring in my mail, address book, and safari bookmarks, and I have installer disks for most of my programs. But things like my documents, iPhoto library and my iTunes library will need to be pulled from Backup, a well as some preference files and application support stuff for a few apps that will need it. I also presume that down the road I may need to access a few things here and there as I transition fully to Time Machine.
Will I be able to use the Backup program and my existing incremental backups to access that information? I am not going to install anything until I'm positive this can work. I'd prefer not to make a disk image or just copy everything over to my external drive if I already have a robust backup database in place.
    Thanks in advance.

Ok. I have a huge problem. I have an Incremental Backup Package of my Home folder made with Backup from Tiger. I did an erase and install and put on Leopard. I installed the current version of Backup on Leopard. Now, when I double click on the Package on the external drive and check the box for Home folder, I select replace existing items, hit restore, get the error:
"Backup may attempt to restore files that are in use by open applications, which can cause unexpected results."
Hit continue, and after a few seconds, it stops acting like it will restore and I get the red circle with the ! in it. I click it and it says restore failed. I view details. Console opens and says, "Begin restore at 2007-11-02 21:39:29 -0400 End restore at 2007-11-02 21:39:35 -0400." Then there is a window with a bunch of code telling me something that I have no Idea what it is.
    Please help.
