Backup controlfile from O/S command

Is it possible that backup controlfile by OS level command without issue oracle DDL command such as "alter database backup controlfile to ..." ?

The control file is a binary file that is constantly being written to when the database is open. If the database is open, then you should only backup the control file with RMAN or the 'alter database ..." commands. If the database is shut down, then you can use the OS command to backup the control file.

Restore controlfile from tape backup without autobackup setting on

I am testing a scenraio of restoring control file if we loose all control files.
My RMAN settings for CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP is OFF. But, I have taken a backup of controlfile using 'BACKUP CURRENT CONTROL FILE' .
When I tried to restore control file. I am receiving following error:

My question is, How can I restore control file from tape backup without CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP setting ON.
It sounds like, There is no way we can restore control file from tape backup if you've not set the CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP is ON.
Please advice

When all controlfiles are lost and a recovery catalog is NOT used, RMAN has no information , where to find the controlfile backup. It's not enough to specify the channel, such a channel could hold many different backups from many different databases. You have tell , which database and which backupset. Modify your run block:
SET DBID <DBID of the database,for which you want to restore the controlfile>;
RESTORE CONTROLFILE FROM <name_of_backupiece_which_contains_the_controlfile backup>';

Add date to backup controlfile to trace command

A little background:
I'm writting a rman script and want to include a controlfile to trace and a pfile.
The commands I'm using are:
alter database backup controlfile to trace as 'd:\oracle\backup\controlfile.bak';
create pfile='d:\oracle\backup\pfile.bak' from spfile;
However, I want the file to be controlfile.bak.theDate, ie controlfile.bak.20090323, as I want to keep so many days worth and not overwrite the file.
How can I add the date in this way?

But why do you want to do so when RMAN itself can take the controlfile backup and of the pfile automatically.Why do want to get the trace of controlfile.In you script simply add
backup current controlfile format '/location/ctl_%d_%T';
backup spfile format 'location/sp_%d_%T';
%d ---> The name of the database.
%T ---> The year, month, and day (YYYYMMDD)
Every time you take a backup, the controlfile and spfile with unique name will be present along with the database backup.

I am using legato tool to perform rman tape backup.
I use the following script on legato to get the controlfile backup.
"backup current controlfile format '%d_%s_%p.ctrl'; "
If I lost the controlfile how do i restore controlfile from the tape. Assume that the DB in nomount stage.

Hi,
backing up autobackup controlfiles to legato is possible. All you have to do is to configure autobackup accordingly. By default autobackup controlfiles will get written to disk.
However i strongly recommend to use a rman backup catalog. This will save you a lot of time consuming trouble if you need to restore your database.
The rman catalog database itself does not need any license and is rather small (5 GB on disk, 512 MB memory).
Restoring the control file will be something like this:
set controlfile autobackup format for device type sbt to '%F';
restore controlfile from autobackup;

How to create standby controlfile from restored backup

Hi Techies,
I am re-building one of my DR server, Source and target DB is oracle 10g.
I have taken the source backup which is going to be restored on target, But I forgot to take a standby controlfile from source DB at the time (Pre/Post) backup.
Now the issue is I can create a standby controlfile on primary and copy the same to target, But so many datafiles are added after the backup which I have taken to restore and medias are already shipped.
I can send the other set of backup to DR site, but it takes a week time and I don't want to do that If I can regenerate it.
So any clue to create standby controlfile on target with restored datafiles?

Hmm... sounds like you perform this in a rather manual fashion...
Do you use RMAN for taking the backups?
Or maybe the BR*TOOLS?
With these tools you are usually safe from such mistakes - I can only recommend to use them!
However, since you don't have a control file at all on the target side, the only thing left to do would be to
ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE NORESETLOGS;
on the primary side and manually remove the files that have been added since you took the backup from the control file script,
Afterwards you use the script on the standby side to create the control files.

Recover database until cancel using backup controlfile Fails with ORA-01547

First of all, I'm sorry for posting in this community as my issue doesn't have any thing to do with Rman, but I couldn't find any more relative Community to post in
our System is Oracle EBS 11i and the OS on the production is AIX 5.2 / and the DR is 5.3 / DB version is 9i
we have our Oracle ERP scheduled using crontab to take a database COLD backup daily using gtar -cvzf .
yesterday I needed to clone the database only, so I used my usual method witch is
1) on the source SQL> alter database backup controlfile to trace as '<dest>/makecntrlfil.sql'
then you can delete the Commented header and change the first command from
"CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE <SOURCE> NORESETLOGS ..."
TO
CREATE CONTROLFILE SET DATABASE <TARGET> RESETLOGS <NO>ARCHIVELOG
2) de-compress the tgz files
3) on the target edit the $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<source>.ora, $ORACLE_HOME/environment file
4)run /ORACLE_HOME/appsutils/clone/bin/adcfgclone.prl
5) delete old controlfiles
6) on the database run the script you created on firs t step to create a new control fole
7)recover database until cancel using backup controlfile
8) alter database open resetlogs
add new temp file system
this way I used to do it
but yesterday when trying to execute recover database it didn't work, and gave this error

RMAN error when restoring controlfile from tape

We have a Production database with instance name PROD.
We use Symantec Netbackup software to backup this database to tape library.
We want to test some recovery scenarios on a test server. So we want to restore the production backups from Tape to this test server.
We did the following:
Cloned the ORACLE Home to the Test Server.
Changed the db_name parameter to PROD and also set ORACLE_SID to PROD.
then we connected to RMAN and ran the following command to restore the control files:

Here you can see that AUTOBACKUP is found but RMAN is unable to process the backup piece.
I am not able to see any errors in the log files. Please advise.

Backup controlfile to trace as 'c:\prod_ctl.txt'

I am examining the output of the trace file, because I want to simulate or test this process.
This file has two(2) sets of command. one(1) is for the intact online logs and the other one(1) is for damage online logs.
Questions:
1. What do u mean by damage online logs. does this mean that i lost all these redo files:

As far as i understand , one is with :
CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE "ORCL" RESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOG
and the other one is with :
CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE "ORCL" NORESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOG
The first one (resetlogs) is useful when you are trying to open a database after incomplete recovery (during cloning for example) or while changing the name of the database after restoring and recovering a database during a clone process.
The second one ( noresetlogs )is used when we have a consistent database and we are recreating the controlfile.
In General , you may be using resetlogs while opening a cloned database after incomplete recovery.

Why can't I restore the controlfile from autobackup?

Running 10GR2
Something that I have always had a problem with is the restore controlfile from autobackup command. RMAN is configured to run autobackyps of the controlfiles.
I have setup a restore test and moved the backups over to the test machine. I have restored the spfile and modified the necessary init parameters. When I startup nomount and try to restore the controlfile from autobackup RMAN says it cannot find an autobackup controlfile.
I have always gotten around this by explicitly naming the controlfile to restore but am wondering what is possibly incorrect in my config such that RMAN doesn't know where to find the controlfile autbackups.

You must not specify any other format,only '%F'.
FRA structure should like <db_recovery_file_dest>/<SID>/AUTOBACKUP/<date>/<controlfile_backup>. Only when both is true, RMAN will find the autobackup, otherwise it searches in the OS dependent default location.

Error, Backup Controlfile

When I tried to make a trace of controlfile, it works very well
sql> alter database backup controlfile to trace
But, when I tried to make a copy of the controlfile, it fails
sql> alter database backup controlfile to 'E:\oracle\db\adm\bdump\control_bkp.ctl'
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01587: error during controlfile backup file copy
ORA-27091: skgfqio: unable to queue I/O
ORA-27070: skgfdisp: async read/write failed
OSD-04006: ReadFile() failure, unable to read from file
O/S-Error: (OS 1117) The request could not be performed because of an I/O
device error.
The Oracle user has enough privileges to write and read files at dumps directories. And there is a lot of space on disk.
The version of oracle software is:
Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.8.0 - Production
PL/SQL Release 9.2.0.8.0 - Production
CORE 9.2.0.8.0 Production
TNS for 32-bit Windows: Version 9.2.0.8.0 - Production

the output of E:\ORACLE\DB\ADMIN\UDUMP is
a lot of files *.trc. Here I can see the trace for the backup controlfile.

is empty. I saw in command window(cmd) that oracle create the filecontrol while execute the alter database backup controlfile to 'path\control_bck.ctl'. But when the command fails, Oracle automatic delete the file.

How to restore specific backup file from RMAN?

I am just begginer with Oracle DB so I do not have a lot knowledge.
I created two backups at April the 8th and April the 10th.
I did following from RMAN.
shutdown immediate
startup mount
configure channel 1 device type disk format '/opt/oracle/backup/std_%U';
backup database
startup
output was:
including current control file in backupset
including current SPFILE in backupset
it created two files: std-0so6l0vn(2 GB) and std_0to6l106 (7 MB).
First question - first file is backup and what is the second file???
Today I created also backup and it also created two files: std_0uo6morg (2GB) and std_0vo6morv (7MB)
Now I want to return backup from 2 days ago (*std-0so6l0vn*) but can't;
I do the the following:
shutdown immediate
startup mount
restore database from '/opt/oracle/backup/std_0so6l0vn'
but getting error - only SPFILE or control file can be restored from autobackup.
How to restore my backup from two days ago? It looks to me so complicated and hardly understandable.
What command to execute from RMAN to succeed in restore?

How to restore a database backup taken from a SQL Server 2012 instance to SQL Server 2014

I am trying to restore a database backup taken from a SQL Server 2012 instance to my new SQL Server 2014 instance. When I add the .bak through the Mgmt studio UI, it does not seem to find a backup set in the file so I cannot proceed (does not give
me any errors though either. I tried restoring through TSQL command but only got a database restore terminating abnormally error with no other details. How can I restore this database to SQL 2014?

How to backup files from other user logged in as administrator

My MacBook Pro computer’s hard drive is not booting.
I booted with the base operating system and ran Disk utilities and I got the following messages:
    Invalid catalog PEOF
    The volume could not be verified completely.
    This disk needs to be repaired.
    Disk utility can’t repair this disk. Backup as many files as possible, reformat the disk,
    and restore your backed-up files.
The problem is that I have a couple of USERS set up on this computer, and it won’t let me backup the files of the second user. The folders are locked and I can’t access them, even though I am logged in as the administrator.
I made a boot disk on my other computer ( a MacPro Early 2008 ) desktop computer with the DiskWarrior 4.4 updater,
but it won’t boot on my MacBook Pro.
How can I backup these user files so that I can copy them back once I fix the drive?
or better yet, How can I repair the Invalid catalog PEOF on this drive?

Try using Disk Utility/Restore to copy the backup to a new location. Please note that this will reformat the destination partition which will erase all data.
Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

When you reboot, use Setup Assistant to restore your data.
