Backup mac

Hello , im desperate i hope any of you can help me. Im so stupid that i downloaded "sugarsync" a devil program, that "backup" all of my information online, when i deleted those items on the sugarsync, they dissapeared and i lost ALL of my information. I tried finding on the trash, and on "deleted files" in sugarsync, but nothings is there... is there any backup for mac?? or any sistem recovery?? i dont have time machine... I really hope someone can help me, i would REALLY appreciate it

I'm afraid you may indeed have lost the information unless you prepared yourself with a redundancy.
Time Machine is the defacto backup program/application for a Mac running OS X. The fact that OS X also has a retreival mechanism for deleted files in a "trash can", as long as said Trash Can has not been emptied, might be construed as a simple "back-up" mechanism, albiet only for erroneously deleted files. But that is about it.
No matter what, any full-fleged backup mechanism for the Mac requires user preparation and allocation of resources, whether you are using Time Machine, or another solution like Cloning or alternatives.
I, myself look at "cloud" backups as a limited function, still in infancy. I have a pretty fast IP connection at home (60 Mbs), but still find onine backup too slow for my own personal practicality. But understand fopr some, it may be alright. I use cloning (Carbon Copy Cloner) on an external self powered drive, and Time Machine on a powered Thunderbolt drive as a quasi-redundant pair.

  • How to backup Mac without login???

My iMac has a very weird problem, it usually booting with a long gray bar and take very long time, and even sometime it suddenly shuts down while booting. And now it shuts down every time i turn it on. I did try Lion Recovery to repair Macintosh HD, but it can't repair, there is an alert that tell me I have to reinstall Mac OS, but before that, I have to format Macintosh HD, and it will erase all of my data. And OMG, I forgot to backup my iMac, what can I do, please help me?!!!

OMG, finally i found all of my pictures when i copy iPhoto Library to Bootcamp Desktop and did a search, all stuff appeared. The reason i can' find pictures my self is Bootcamp doesn't support searching in HFS+ of Macintosh HD, but if i do it manually, i never can find my pics because iPhoto organizes photos with too much folders, each pics stored in a separate folder. Btw, i still want to know is there any way to backup Mac without login Mac OS? If yes, i will do backup all my applications because it is very crazy for me to reinatall all applications again!??

How to fix Lightroom 5.6 from crashing when backing up catalog database (external AND local backup) - Mac 10.9.5
It starts to cue and within 3-4 seconds, the program just crashes hard. As stated, I tried it on local hard drive and external. Same result...
In the destination backup folder, it will copy over one folder, no images.
    Thanks ahead of time.

  • How to format and backup Mac & Windows to external drive

I have a LaCie 1 T external drive.  I want to use it to backup both my Mac partition and my Windows 7 partition.  The Windows 7 partition was created using Bootcamp.  I  formatted the drive with exfat from within Lion and then divided the drive into two equal partitions, one for Mac and one for PC. I tried to use Time Machine to back up the Mac data and it seemed to blow away the Mac partition which is no longer visible to Finder and consequently cannot be backed up to. I haven't tried to do anything about backing up the Windows 7 partition. As an aside, one online source I saw said I need to do this setup routine of the external drive from within Windows 7 in order for the drive to be accessible to both operating systems?
    Thanks for any help,

You need to find a Windows backup software that will work with Apple's Bootcamp partition.
On a Mac, Apple does a hack to "fool" Windows into thinking it's on a PC with a Master Boot Record Partition map.
Mac's can only boot from a GUID Partiton map, so there is a hybid MBR installed into the Bootcamp partiton when you set it up.
Traditional Windows backup software won't work when you try to restore Windows because it expects to be a PC with a MBR and runs Linux to restore Windows with. (a Mac can run Linux if Linux knows it's talking to a GUID)
And You can only image backup Windows, not make it a bootable copy on a external drive like you can do with OS X.
So the external drive needs to be formatted with a GUID Partition map and 2 partitions.
1: OS x Extended (J) so you can use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone Lion to it.
2: exFAT so you can save the Windows image file to it.
Now you need to find software that will run in OS X, take the Windows image of the Bootcamp partiton and restore it. There used to be great free software that did this, but since Lion rolled around a lot of good software wsn't updated anymore, guess people figured Apple is closing up like iPads and didn't see the sense in it.

  • Backup Mac to CD or DVD

I know all about, and I do, backup to a timemachine volume externally. I am looking for an easy way to make a second backup of my mac (or at least my files) onto a different media (something besides a hard drive). I decided a CD/DVD would be a good alternative. Asside from manually sorting and burning each CD can anyone recommend a decent way to acomplish this?
    Thanks,
    -Michael

Personally I gave up on optical media for backup years ago when my data exceed 100 GB.
Besides the nuisances of cataloging all of them, there is the additional problem that home recorded optical media only have a limited life expentance. This adds the additional problem of having to test past media for valid data.It was just more trouble then I thought it was worth.
I just got another external disk and throw away all of the optical media.

  • TIME MACHINE - MAIL BACKUP - MAC 10.6.8

    Hi guys
I am new to using Time Machine and still learning about my Mac.
I have many important work emails that have contact information of people i am dealing with in other countries if i Lose my emails i am screwed. Does time machine backup your emails safely say something were to happen to my Mac???
I have been reading mixed reviews so I am unclear...... Help appreciated.
    Thanks guys

It will unless you have excluded them in System Preferences/Time Machine. If they are important to you, I suggest you make a 2nd backup on another external drive using a cloning program.
Clone  - Carbon Copy Cloner          (Often recommended as it has more features than some others)
    Clone – Data Backup
    Clone – Deja Vu
    Clone  - SuperDuper
    Clone - Synk
Clone Software – 6 Applications Tested

  • Backup Mac to Windows shared NTFS drive.

Hey. I'd like to backup my Mac's data (running Mavericks) with Time Machine to a Windows shared NTFS drive on my network. I'm fairly sure this is possible with some type of network drive. Anyone know how to make this work?

No, you cannot use Time Machine to back up to an NTFS formatted drive because OS X can only read NTFS drives, they cannot write to them.  If you still wanted to use the NTFS drive, you could create a partition on it that is in HFS+ format(a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) and have Time Machine back up to the partition.

  • Backup MAC OS and Windows

I am currently running Windows XP with Paralles on my MAC Book Pro and would like to know if I use Time Capsule to back up my computer, will it automatically back up the Windows files and data files or will I have to set it up in Windows too. If so, then how does the backup work for MAC and Windows?

Hello JLF. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
By default, Time Machine will back up your entire hard drive, including the Parallels VM file once an hour. Since every time you access Parallels this file will change, you will potentially be backing up this large file (several GBs) each time Time Machine runs.
What is recommended is that you exclude this file from the Time Machine backups, and instead if you require backups of Windows XP files within the Parallels VM environment to use a Windows-based programs that allows backups to network drives with the Time Capsule's hard drive being the target.

  • Backup (Mac program) suddenly not working

I have a Lacie external hard drive and have been using Backup to backup my hard drive for more than a year. Suddenly it is failing and I am getting Mac OS error -36 in the backup log.
My Lacie is not full. I have verified the disk a couple of times and have repaired permissions on my Mac a couple of times. I have removed files to be backed up that it has hung up on, but each time I do that I stalls on another file.

  • How to backup Mac Lion over the network

I have a client who asked me to set up a Lion email server for 20 users.  It is running open directory for the user accounts and has a wiki set up on it as well.  I have been researching  backup solutions for it.  The server runs in a remote data center environment and it is the only mac on the network.  There are other Linux and windows machines on the same network as well.  I would like a backup solution for the email  and open directory database that doesn't require stopping the email service (if possible), and I would like to back up over the network (if possible).
What would be the best way to back up this server considering it needs to be in service 24/7?  I am open to both free and commercial solutions.  Any thoughts or comments would be very much appreciated.

As the server is in a (remote) data center the first more normal approach for backing up over the network would require you to have access to a second computer in the same data center this would require additional hosting costs.
The next (network) approach would involve backing up from the server in the data center over the Internet to perhaps a machine at your own office, or another site, or a third option to use a commercial Internet based backup service.
Internet backup services include the following and I am sure plenty of others -
    Mozy - http://mozy.com/
    Backblaze - http://www.backblaze.com/
    Carbonite - http://www.carbonite.co.uk/
    Crashplan - http://www.crashplan.com/
    iDrive Pro - http://www.idrive.com/index.html
    Livedrive - http://www.livedrive.com/
If your backing up to your own Mac over the Internet you will need to setup a VPN link. You could in theory as one possible example, have the Mac mini in the data center also act as a VPN server so you can fully access it, then mount the volumes over AFP, then use any standard backup tool to copy that to a local volume. Retrospect would be able to do this as one example. Another way is rather than using AFP, use FTP to download everything. However unless you protect FTP behind a VPN it is these days considered very insecure.
Another approach is to use Rsync which is designed original for Unix/Linux for this exact purpose but like all Linux originated software is far from friendly. See http://www.rsync.net/resources/howto/mac_rsync.html

  • Backup Mac Pro w/ 4 full bays

    I have 1 Mac Pro. 4  2TB Bays.
1st bay Drive has 10.8.4 Mountaion Lion Installed
Other 3 bays are all data usage bays.
I need a way to take a scheduled backup of all drives in a convieniant manner that is set and forget. Some kind of raid, where if 1 bay should fail, I can hot swap it with the backup and be setup.
    How can I do this?

RAID provides additional mean Time to Repair after a drive failure, but Backups are not typically a "non-stop computing" requirement, and do not use the redundancy to best advantage.
Using extra drives for a RAID backup is generally not as useful as using those drives for an additional independent backup or a rotating basis ( A, B, or A, B, C) set of Backup drives.
If external single-drive enclosures do not have enough storage space, multiple sets of multi-drive enclosures can be used. Performance will not be an issue because the drives within an enclosure will be written one at a time.

  • Backup Mac/PC

    Hi Everyone!
What I wuld like to do is using an external HDD on a Mac and a PC for backups. It will be connected by Firewire on one machine at a time. Most time on the Mac and sometimes on the PC for backups.
Do I have to make two partitions on that disk? One for the Mac backup and one for the PC backup? I also would like to use the same disk to sore my music and fotos there form the Mac. So that one partition would be 100 GB (PC) and the other 400 GB (Mac).
The next step in the future will be that I connect the HDD to the Airport Extreme Base Station. Do I have look out for something special there?
Maybe someone can ansver my questions. It would be really helpfull
    Thanks,
    Mathias

  • How to backup Mac server files and restore to Windows server?

Our company is moving from Mac Server to Windows Server 2008 R2.
I'd like to connect a hard drive to the Mac server (via existing eSATA) and backup our data (just file level backup is fine, don't need permissions or security) and then move hard drive to new Windows 2008 R2 server and restore files.
Does anyone have any cross-platform backup/restore software they can recommend?
We have about 500GB of data, so I prefer a locally connected device to backup to instead of over-the-network backup.
    Thank you for your ideas!

As standard the Mac cannot write to NTFS format disks, and as standard Windows cannot read from HFS+ disks. FAT32 might be a possibility but it does not support files bigger than 4GB.
The simplest if slower option is to do it over the network using SMB. If you do really want to do it with a hard disk then you may need to consider getting some software to let either Mac or Windows deal with the others preferred hard disk format.
To let the Mac write to NTFS there are several choices but the one I have used in the past is NTFS for Mac by Paragon, see http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/
To let Windows read from HFS again the are multiple possible choices but the one I have used in the past and still use is MacDrive, see http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive

  • Backup Mac through Bootcamp

I don't know whether this is the right place to post this, but here it goes anyway...
For some reason my mac-side on my MacBook Pro decided to stop working.
If I startup I get the gray mac logo and after that the MBP shuts down.
I can however boot my Bootcamp Windows Vista Partition (using alt key).
I can also acces all the files on my mac partition while running Vista, so I can try backuping before running of to the repair shop.
Now my question is: What can I backup / should I backup from my mac partition?
Is there a way to backup my mails which are stored in Mozilla Thunderbird as I can no longer open Thunderbird?

If you can view files on Mac side (HFS Extended) from Vista, then you probably have MacDrive7 - be sure it is the latest.
Before you run into trouble is the time to backup of course. A combination of TimeMachine and SuperDuper is ideal.
Having a small 40GB or even smaller partition on external drive to boot OS X helps. Boot from Leopard DVD and install OS X on part of the drive you would use for recovery and backup.
You probably at some point will find and need to invest in 3rd party disk utility to manage and repair OS X file structure and directory. Alsoft Disk Warrior is rated best, and MicroMat TechTool Pro 5 would also be excellent.
I have used the same mail from "Shredder" (Thunderbird latest build) in Vista and OS X.
