Backward compatiblity between Reader 9 and PDFs created in Acrobat 6 and 7

Older Acrobat 6 and 7 versions created a number of PDFs that are now being used in Reader 9. Originally, they were generated on a Mac using Distiller 5.0 (PDF 1.4) settings. Forms fields and security were applied in Acrobat 6 and 7 and uploaded for online purchase. I need to know if there are backward compatibility issues relating to these forms. These PDFs were created a couple of years ago (as far back as 2006). We have users who are finding problems with the fields printing corrupted text. Is this problem related to Reader 9? Are there other problems showing up with compatibility and older Acrobat products? I will have to update and replace a few hundred documents to correct this problem, so any advice would be appreciated.

Can you elaborate on the exact problem you are facing here? What error do the reviewers get on adding comments? If possible, can you attach one such file created from A7?

  • Problems opening PDFs created with Acrobat in TFS

    Hi,
I know this might not really be a supported issue, but any thoughts you might have would be appreciated!
I've been creating PDFs using Primo PDF and a trial of Acrobat X. I then put them on TFS / MS Visual Studio 2000.
So, when I try to open a PDF I've checked in, the ones I've created in Primo are fine and launch whereas the ones created in Acrobat won't open and an error message about Inconsistent Line Endings is displayed.
    It says:
"The line endings are not consistent. Do you want to normalize them....
    Line ending: Windows (CR LF)"
The PDFs DO work when I open them from the normal place in the windows file system. However, when I try to "normalize" them by clicking yes, it breaks them completely.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? I'm assuming it must be something to do with the conversion or document settings, because this only happens to PDFs created with Acrobat.

In Acrobat X, SharePoint Integration has been added which allows users to check-out/check-in the document from within Acrobat. Clicking the file from document library in Internet Explorer opens the file in Acrobat. The configuration that needs to be done on the SharePoint server is explained in the following KB article in section 11.1.

Please try these and let us know if you face any problems after this.

  • Word 2000 hyperlinks don't work in .pdf created with Acrobat 9 Pro

I'm new to Adobe Forums, so please overlook the effrontery of my posting a query previously discussed. Perhaps someone can simply reply with a link to the prior discussion. I have installed Acrobat 9.2 Pro in 2 computers, one running XP64 Pro, the other XP32 Pro. Word 2000 is installed in both. All Word hyperlinks work fine, but after .pdf conversion using Acrobat 9.2 Pro, none of these work. In 'Preferences', I have navigated Convert to PDF > Microsoft Office Office Word > Edit Settings > Add Links to Adobe PDF File and confirmed that the Add Links feature is enabled. Having ascertained that this glitch is not specific to either XP64 or XP32 operating systems, I uninstalled Acrobat 9.2 Pro from the XP32 computer and reinstalled Acrobat 6.1 Pro. Then using the same Word 2000 document, I converted to .pdf using Acrobat 6.1 Pro, with no problems whatsoever. This looks like a serious bug in Acrobat 9 Pro, which the telephone support folks have acknowledged. Alas, they won't give me the tiniest clue how to resolve it, nor any workaround, but merely refer me to AdobeForums.com for help. I suspect a corrective patch or 'upgrade' will be forthcoming, but meanwhile, if anyone knows of a workaround, please enlighten me. Thanks. /rmbrown

Thank you, CtDave, for your speedy reply and for the 'Acrobat Technical Evangelist' knowledge base article. Word 2000 is one of Microsoft's masterpieces - by disabling 'autosave', the application is totally stable, does not require 'activation' by Microsoft. Acrobat 9 enables 'saving' of interactive .pdf forms, a most valuable feature and one much appreciated by anyone completiing such forms. There must be more to this issue than 'incompatibility', because I can create a test Word 2000 document, hyperlink a valid URL, convert to .pdf with Acrobat 9, and the hyperlink works fine in Acrobat 9. When I attempt to do this using a much more complex Word 2000 document, embedded with scores of hyperlinks, these links fail to work following conversion to .pdf with Acrobat 9, but work fine following conversion to .pdf with  Acrobat 6. I can then use Acrobat 9 to open the .pdf created with Acrobat 6, and successfully edit any of these fully functional hyperlinks using the 'Link tool'. I don't know who prepared the 'Acrobat Technical Evangelist' article (AF1908DCd01) - no credits were cited, and I'm far from certain that this authentically belongs to Adobe's knowledge base. So I appreciate your sharing this information with me, but I cannot say that my question has been definitively answered. If you have any further information or tips, please reply in this thread. /rmbrown

The clouds you see next to your music on the device and iCloud are two different things. When your music is not on your device it is in iTunes in the Cloud. Not the same thing as iCloud which is used to sync information between devices and house backups of your device contents. So that little cloud you see next to your songs is telling you that the music is not on your device. That's why it is giving you the message - because when you click on it, it is attempting to download it to your device.
What may have happened is when you imported your photos to the PC, you may have sync'd your device via iTunes, and you did not have the Sync Music option checked in your device Profile screen.
Hook up your device to your PC and open iTunes. Make sure the sidebar is showing (Control+S if you cannot see the sidebar with Devices listed), and click on your device to open the Device Profile screens to the right. Click on the Music tab, and make sure that the Sync All Music or Sync Selected Music box is checked. If you have Sync Selected Music checked, then below that, make sure you check all music that you want on your device. Then click on SYNC at the bottom (or APPLY).
Once you have successfully sync'd your music to your device, you will no longer see the cloud next to the songs, and you also will no longer get a message since you will have the songs physically on your device and not in iTunes in the Cloud.

  • Preserving PDF links and actions created in Acrobat after editing in Illustrator

I created an interactive PDF in Acrobat from an Illustrator file saved as a PDF.  It's basically an interactive prototype that simulates dropdown menus, highlighted selections and navigation between screens.  Using the Link Tool, I set layers to appear through the layer visibility action, and certain layers to toggle through javascript.  Since the prototype is evolving, however, I have to periodically make minor edits to it in Illustrator.  Once I make an edit and save the PDF again, when I open up the saved document in Acrobat, all the link tool actions are gone.  This is highly frustrating because most of the edits take just a minute or two in Illustrator, but I have to re-create all the links in Acrobat when I'm done, which takes a very long time.  How can I make minor edits in Illustrator while preserving the action elements I created in Acrobat?

Well, that's a bummer.  It's so close to a feasible workflow for generating quick early-stage prototypes that you can continue to work on.
    Thanks for the info.

  • Problem saving Reader extended PDF created in Livecycle with Javascript functions built in

    Afternoon
I have created an interactive PDF in Livecycle with built in Javascript functionality.  I need users to be able to complete and save the PDF so have saved it as a Reader extended PDF.  The problem I'm having is that when a user completes the form, saves it, and then opens it again the Javascript functionality is not showing despite showing the original selection that the user has made.  The Javascript is simply a dropdown menu that will show a different table based on the selection so isn't anything major.
I've trawled forums and this is driving me mad so I'd appreciate some help.
I am using Adobe Pro XI.
    Thanks in advance
    Ben

At the moment I can't sorry.  I've run the Javascript debugger in Adobe Pro and it seems there are some errors

  • Printing microsoft word 2003 document and pdf created from the document are different

I created a microsoft word 2003 document with jpg pictures and printed it on my HP Inkjet printer. I then created a pdf by saving as a pdf from the microsoft word 2003 document. The settings for images were 300 dpi and zip compression. The pdf file created was ~3 MB whereas the word document was ~250 KB. It looked fine on the screen but when I printed it the jpg pictures from the pdf were very dark and not very desirable. When I printed it on my HP Color laser 2600n printer I couldn't see the difference in the jpg pictures.
I am creating the pdf files to send to the online publisher lulu.com to print. I have used the settings to create the pdf they recommend from their website; however they aren't real clear in the information they give for the recommended settings.
My question is why would the print out be so awful using the HP Color Ink Jet printer since it is very good for printing pictures?

There are many reasons, but most revolve around the color space and coding for the colors. Acrobat uses 8 bit RGB.

  • Is there a licensing limit on PDF's created in Acrobat and imported into FormsCentral?

    Hello,
I have been looking at the forums and also chatted with someone from tech support. I have created a PDF in Acrobat Professional. I have not enabled Reader Extensions on the file. I imported it into FormsCentral and added a submit button. To test it, I filled it out and saved it successfully using Reader 9. I also submitted it successfully using the submit button. I do not yet have a paid FormsCentral account, but see that the Plus account allows 5000 submissions per form. This is not a licensing limit, but a space limit (see http://forums.adobe.com/docs/DOC-1382). I also understand there is a 500 use licensing limit on PDF's that have Reader Extensions enabled. Does that apply to an imported PDF with no Reader Extensions enabled? Please clarify.
    Thanks!

    Hello Gen,
Thank you for your reply. I have seen many discussions on these forums, as well as elsewhere on the internet regarding Adobe's licensing limit on fillable PDF forms created in Acrobat that have Reader Extensions enabled. We are only allowed to extract 500 responses from Reader Extended PDF's, according to this limit.
I wanted to confirm if this is applicable to a PDF I create in Acrobat Pro (without the Reader Extensions enabled), then imported and submitted through FormsCentral using a Plus account. You are saying that FormsCentral adds the Reader Extensions. Does that mean that the PDF is now subject to Adobe's limit of 500 on Reader Extended PDF's? Or does the fact that the PDF form is submitted through FormsCentral eliminate the limit of 500?
I just want to be sure that we can go ahead and send out a fillable PDF through FormsCentral without worrying we are exceeding the licensing limit.
    Thanks again!

  • DIfferent PDF view in Acrobat and in Reader???

I created a PDF in Adobe Indesign CS3.
It was created starting from page 2.
Because, when I look at it in Adobe ACrobat 8 PRofessional it looks like I want it: Every spread has 2 pages, the start spread has 2 pages.
BUT when I open the same PDF in Acrobat Reader 7 it starts with a single page and all the following spreads have wrong left and right pages!
    Why is this happening?
I must be able to depend on that the reader/viewer sees the PDF in a consistent way independent of display application!
Is there anything I can do to force the PDF to look the same in Acrobat and Reader (as it really should do!!)?
Do I really have to make one PDF to be seen in Acrobat and Another to be seen in Reader???
    /Larry

    >Different settings under View > Page Display > ...
Thanks Bernd for taking interest in my problem!
But I am afraid I cannot follow you..
I don't see any settings to set for this subject (in Acrobat Reader 7).
Under Edit->Preferences you can set defaults for Page Display, but nothing that affects how the first page shows.
Under View->Page Display there are choices
       Single Page View
       Continuosly
       Continuosly - two Page View
       Two Page View
So the question remains: Where in Acr Reader 7 can you set the Page Display so that it starts not with a single page but with a 2-page-spread?
However: I installed Acr Reader 10, and that version IS consistent with Acrboat 8 Prof:
A pdf starting on page 2 is displayed with the first spread having 2 pages.
OK, it may be hard for you to answer specifics about Acr Reader v 7,
But still, if the pdf reader still uses the older Acr Reader 7, how could he see the pdf starting with a 2-page-spread as I want him to?
Which 'settings' should I advice him to set?
If you feel that you have any more comment, I would appreciate to hear it!
    yours
    Larry

  • Problem printing Adobe Reader documents (PDF). Text files and MS-WORD print fine. Help?

I cannot get my ePrint to work with Adobe Acrobat (ReaderX) and pdf files.  I get a "Failed to send" message.  I have NO problems printing text or MS-WORD files so I know my Internet, printer, and local intranet are working.  Help?

When you say the bottom right of you screen, are you talking about your computer screen?  If you are then, you are not using ePrint, which is fine.  You may just be having some wireless network issues.  Try this.  When it asks for the DNS information on step six, enter Google's public DNS (Preferred = 8.8.8.8 | Alt = 8.8.4.4).  If that does not help, let me know  and I will see what I can do.
By the way, if you are emailing the documents to your printer, which is ePrint, you are right about the file size limit, however, the limit is 5 MB.  Most likely you are not Creating PDF or Docx documents that are anywhere near that size, so that should not be the issue if you are using ePrint.  If you are using ePrint, try turning the router and printer off.  Turn the router on and let it become stable.  Turn the printer back on.  Turn off and on any other devices that are connected to your wireless network as well, so they can re-establish network connection.  Now retry the ePrint job.  If that does not work, let me know.

  • Firefox and PDF download problems -- hanging and failures

I am working in Windows XP and Firefox 12.0.
We post our multi-page newsletter to our website in PDF, and then use a list to send a link to access it. When attempting to download using Firefox, the document will download all or part of the first page, and then hang -- sometimes in perpetuity, and sometimes with infinitesimally slow progress.
It works just fine in Google Chrome.
I tried disabling all of my plug-ins, including Adobe Acrobat (9.5.1.283). I left them all disabled, but re-enabled Adobe. No joy.
I disabled Adobe and tried a straight-up download, then open with my local reader. No joy.
What is going on, and how can I fix it?
My Acrobat 9 Standard is 9.5.1 that I'm using to create the document in the first place.
What can I do to fix MY system to get it to download and, more importantly, what information can I give our members to use so that they can successfully download it?

I personally open PDFs in the stand-alone Adobe Reader rather than in the browser, but everyone has their own preference.
Have you experimented with Firefox's application tab settings?
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Applications
In the search box on that tab, type pdf and pause for the list to be filtered. You should be able to toggle between viewing the PDF in the browser or launching it externally. I have mine set to "Always Ask."
Generally speaking, when you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    1. Clear Firefox's Cache
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Offline Storage : "Clear Now"
    2. If needed, delete the site's cookies here
While viewing a page on the site, right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
If you host the PDFs on a site you can't actually visit, access the View Cookies dialog from this page and change the host name at the top of the box to the correct host name to access the relevant cookies.
Then try downloading again. Does that help?

  • How Can I Prevent Emailed PDF (created in Acrobat)From Opening in Preview?

When I email my PDF page, if it is opened in another default viewer ('Preview', etc..) it opens up at the wrong size, (it is designed to open full screen and does not in 'Preview"), and the hot links do not work and are cold.  Is this due to people having older operating systems and/or old versions of applications? or something else?
Can I somehow treat the pdf on my end before I email it in order to ensure that the pdf is opened in Acrobat and reads and performs correctly?
I know I can include a note in the body copy of the email asking that it be opened in Acrobat, but I wish to 'take out the moving parts', so to speak, because one cannot always count on people to cooperate; (we all know how easy it is to just hit the  'Delete' button.).
Please someone tell me there is a way around this and a procedure that will ensure that a pdf open up as an acrobat document by default (help!).
    Thanks!

You really can't prevent it opening in Preview. There was a post recently (in the forms area I think) about writing some information to provide information in Preview as I recall. You should indicate in your e-mail that the PDF should be opened in Acrobat or Reader and that the use of Preview may create an unacceptable presentation.

  • Empty PDF created by Acrobat XI Pro

    Hi,
The more I am using Acrobat XI Pro for Mac, the more I find out some issues around that.
I am using emacs to write a C++ program.  Emacs support postscript print so I print the buffer to a ps file.
Preview can open the ps file  but the same file become empty when openning with Acrobat XI Pro (distriller).
Is it to do with the fonts but those fonts are used by Apple Font manager as well. I think I am using Monaco size 12.
Next question would be how can I make the Apple font used by Acrobat XI Pro
I tried to check the settings in Acrobat Distriller but except things like standard, high quality, etc I do not find anything to note for postscript file conversion.
    Anybody come across this issue?
    Thanks,

it says something like "compliance out of range".

I google it a bit and it probably says Acrobat Distriller does not support the "PDFX4 2008.joboptions". I have no idea why emacs create a .ps file which Distriller does not support it.
    What do I do next?

  • PC-Mac issues with sound in PDF created in Acrobat X

I posted part of this in the Reader forum but haven't gotten any replies. I'm not sure if this should be here or the PC forum.
I have a PDF slideshow that I created on a PC for someone to show to her class. She uses a Mac. She has downloaded Reader X and installed it. I don't know what OS she uses, either at home or in class.
I created the slideshow in Lightroom and exported it to pdf. I brought it into Acrobat and added a few slides in the beginning, plus sound that starts at the first Lightroom slide. The sound is an mp3 that I created from my own WAV in an old version of Audition. I have the sound set up as a floating window, to start when that slide appears. She reports that there is no box where I placed it in the slide.
I don't have a Mac to test with, so are there settings in her Reader that can be made so that the sound will play? She can play the source mp3 file separately. Short of that, is there something I can do in the slideshow to make it work on a Mac?

If it is Reader X on the Mac, it should play the same as it does in Windows. (There are no special settings, just the same ones you see in Windows.)
However, there's a distinct possibility that when she opens the PDF, it will open in Apple's Preview application which would NOT open it the same way.
You need to verify that she really is viewing it in Reader X. In the Mac Finder, have her right-click on the file and choose Open With and select Reader X, rather than just double-clicking on the file.
