Base Stations regularly stop responding

This college has 9 Airport Extreme Base Stations. Two of them have the WAN port attached to our ethernet network. One of these is set up as a Main Base Station for a WDS, linking to 2 relay stations and on to the remotes. They all have fixed IP addresses (10.0.1.x) and are in bridge mode - clients get their ip addresses from our Xserve (OS X server 10.4.4). They are all on Channel 10 and have WEP security set so that only students with the password on their computers can get wireless access.
When it's all working, it works very nicely. Students can talk to each other, form little PC workgroups and have internet access through the ethernet. Typically we might have a total of about 30 machines accessing at any time.
Regularly (sometimes 3 or 4 times a day) a base station stops responding. Its central light is lit, but there is no activity, students lose contact, and I cannot see it from Airport Admin on the server. I haven't noticed any particular pattern as to which station goes down. It seems it can happen to any of them. Updating from firmware version 5.6 to 5.7 has made no difference - six hours later two went down with the log of the relays they were attached to showing it had happened within a minute of each other. I could not see anything in the relay's log to indicate what might have preceded the failure.
All the stations are powered locally. Switching off and on again restores the connection perfectly - until the next time.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
Martin

I too have an AEBS which goes dead intermittently. Sometimes it works fine for a week then it will go dead every morning. I just have too run upstairs and unplug the power for 30 seconds and it works just fine for 24 hours or more. I don't have any answers just want you to know that misery loves company.
I assume something is failing and I will have to send it back to Apple for repair but would like to confirm this is the case. And yes I have done a hard reset (unplug it, press the little button on the back and hold it for 30 seconds) but did not solve the problem.

  • Macbook 2GHz 2GB upgraded to Lion 10.7.4 - Now slow, heats up quickly and regularly stops responding

I have a 2008 Macbook 2GHz 2GB that initially ran on Snow Leopard, and I upgraded it to Lion about 6 months ago. Since the upgrade, it has become slow to start up, open programmes and regularly stops responding - especially when I'm on the Internet - leaving me with the processing colourwheel, and forcing me to turn it off by the button.
I have tried repairing permissions and it doesn't seem to make a difference, could it just be that I don't have enough RAM (only 2GB) to run Lion? I don't want to revert back to Snow Leopard because I sync my laptop with my phone using iCloud, and Snow Leopard would complicate that.
I have also noticed that it heats up especially quickly and gets very hot, although I'm not sure if this problem is related or something to do with the version of Adobe or Microsoft Silverlight that I run on my Macbook.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks a lot!

Honestly I would never run both Win 7 & XP at the same time in a VM. 7 needs at least 4GB to run properly and uses more resources then XP.
I personally use VMware Fusion and XP. At this time there is no software, that I'm aware of or use, that does not run on XP. So for my Mac Win VM purpose I only run XP with the software in need to use in Windows. This work very well for me. I have 2 CPUs and 3GBs of RAM assigned to XP. Leaving the other 2 CPU cores, 4 HT cores, and 5GBs of RAM for OS X.
Not sure why you need, or want, to run both versions of Windows at the same time. I don't see the need as stated above.

  • AirPort Base Station regularly freezes

We have 6 AirPort Extreme Base Stations deployed around the college. They use WPA2 Enterprise Security, and users are authenticated through a RADIUS server. At some point, they stop working (users cannot connect and I cannot see them via Airport Admin Utility.) By recycling the power, they come right back.
The ones that get more use freeze more often. Yesterday, I had to restart one twice. The one that sees the most usage probably has to be restarted almost once a day. Any hints or clues would be great.

Me too, I have seven hardwired stations mounted under the ceiling (very handy...) that needs to be restarted ≈2-3 stations per week. The most frequently used stations are the ones that lockup mot regularly.
To bad the basestations that crash dont keep its log, but, (and I have no idea if this has anything to do with this) if I look at the nearby stations log its not uncommon to see this entry repeating up to 100 times in a minute:
Deauthenticated with station XX:XX.XX.XX.XX.XX (recieved invalid class-3 frame).
I'm going to do the downgrade now as a test even if its not really an acceptable solution. But as it seems in various topics the downgrade is the only solution...

  • ITunes 10.6.1 x64 regularly stops responding.

    Hello -
My name is Erick and I'm an ACMT/Network Engineer; Apple-certified, but not Apple-employed.
I have experienced an issue with iTunes 10.6 in general that has not been resolved by the latest update to 10.6.1. Upon opening the iTunes application, it initially responds but within 15 seconds freezes and is Not Responding. The unresponsiveness lasts up to five full minutes, then the program begins working again. The issue appears to begin as the iTunes Match cloud icon begins animating and checking for updates to my music library.
The same situation also occurs regularly if/when I make changed to a Smart Playlist. The program stops responding for up to five full minutes, then works properly.
Here's some additional information about what I've already attempted in efforts to fix the issue. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for how I might remedy this issue? While it's not crippling my use of the application entirely, it does cause unexpected headaches and delays, and it'd be great to fix it.
I've attempted to resolve the issue by opening a new library and using it temporarily to test, rebuilding the library by starting fresh and importing from my iTunes Library file, and I've also attempted to use iTunes 10.6.1 from a different user account. Finally, I loaded iTunes 10.6.1 onto my external troubleshooting drive which is running the same OS. I've seen the issue persist in each situation. I've also attempted to run iTunes in 32-bit mode as I experienced some success with this fix related to other issues in the past.
I am using an iMac 27" with the quad i7, 16GB, and a 1TB hard drive. All of my music is on iTunes Match and none of it is being stored locally on this machine. My TV and Movies are being stored on an external 2TB drive, as is the iTunes Library file itself.
I would be happy to provide any logs or additional information that could help resolve this problem. I appreciate any assistance and hope to have this resolved at some point. My iMac is typically on 24/7 as it operates as a streaming server for services like StreamToMe, SugarSync, Plex, and other file services. Additionally, iTunes is typically open 24/7 to provide streaming ability to my Apple TVs (1080p versions), though I do have a scheduled task which exits and re-opens iTunes at 4:30AM to prompt syncing of my iOS devices before I head to work (putting the latest unwatched media on them).
I'm sure some of this is unnecessary or extraneous information, but I wanted to be thorough in my explanation and context. Thanks again for your assistance, everyone.

I have resolved my issue with iTunes' unresponsiveness and wanted to post the solution for anyone who might be experiencing similar symptoms. It was really quite simple to fix, I just didn't see it for what it was:
iTunes Match was causing iTunes to stop responding for several minutes at a time, and several times a day.
iTunes Match - which also forces Genius Mode to be on (something that used to cause my iTunes 10.5 to freeze before I turned it off) - would regularly attempt to refresh my database of 21,000 matched songs (none of which were stored on the computer - just in the cloud) and when it would attempt to update or refresh that library, the program would stop responding.
The constant queueing of iTunes Match / Genius also caused iTunes to consume a significant amount of RAM - something that was also causing issues and which I posted about in another discussion.
So, the simple solution was this: Turn iTunes Match off and iTunes quits freezing.
Now, that of course completely eliminates the usefulness of iTunes Match since the music is no longer accessible on this machine in this iTunes Library. So how to restore its usefulness without recreating the problem? Slightly more aggravating, but still working right: I created a separate, fresh new library and named it iTunes Match. When I need music, I hold option when selecting the iTunes app and select my Match Library, which has NOTHING else in it but iTunes Match. When I'm done with the music, I switch back to my 24/7 media streaming library that has my 2TB of TV Shows & Movies (and device sync relationships) in it.
It doesn't seem like iTunes Match causes freezing and RAM ballooning all by itself, it just seems like in a library that's also full of other stuff, it's the final straw that kills the performance. Split the libraries up and things seem to work really well in both.
Not a perfect solution, but until the next release of iTunes, this may be the best bet. I hope this helps someone else out there, but it at least cleared up my issue. Thanks for reading.

  • I deleted Bonjour, since I don't need it for remote printing.  Now I get the message " Airport Base Station has stopped working: and also a message saying APAgent.exe can't be found.  What to do??? Thanks.

I deleted Bonjour since I don't need it for remote printing.  Now on start-up I get the message: "Airport Base Station Agent has stopped working" and also message: "can't find APAgent.exe.:  Do I need AP Agent??  What to do??  Thanks.

The APAgent monitors your AirPort base station and informs you if there are things like firmware updates available. This utility relies on Bonjour, but is not required for base station operation. However, Bonjour makes it easier for your PC to "find" the base station via the AirPort Utility and I would recommend that you keep it installed. If you don't want the APAgent, you can just use the Apple Updater utility (that was also installed when the AirPort Utility was installed) to remove it.

  • When I connect Base Station "Utility Airport" responde this version of Utility AirPort not support this base

I will extend my Home Network and i will install an other device "Airport express" but the responce is this version of Utility AirPort not support this base

The latest versions of the AirPort Utility will not support AirPort base stations that are the earlier 802.11g models. If your AirPort is one of these you will need to use version 5.6 of the AirPort Utility to administer it.

  • All my express base stations have stopped working

I have 4 express stations set up (all model A1088) connected to various speakers throughout the house.  They have all worked flawlessly for years and now suddenly now are are not working.  ALl have green lights but non are availabe to pick to direct speakers to. I've tired resetting them and configuring them again and it all goes fine until the express restarts (has green light) but I get an error saing that airport utility was unable to find your airport wireless device after retarting.  This has occured with all 4 express' so it seems very unlikely that the individual espress' would all break at the same time.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Airports using PoE stop responding after a few days.

We have several Airport Extreme Base Stations distributed throughout the district and connected to Cisco Catalyst 3560 PoE switches. These switches are providing power to our Base Stations via their PoE capabilities. The problem we're having is that after a while, these base stations will stop responding and drop off my network such that I can no longer ping them and people in the areas can no longer use them for connectivity. The way I've been able to correct this issue, so far, is to instruct the switches to remove power from the interfaces the base stations are connected to, and then reapply power. The base stations, effectively, reboot themselves and all is well for the time being.
Naturally, I don't want to keep having to reboot these base stations every time they stop responding. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could fix this issue?
    Thank you.

    Alex,
We had similar huge problems with a large AirPort installation over two separate schools (abou 100 total). We tracked it down to newer AirPort Base Station firmware: anything later than 5.5.1 (including the new 5.7) will eventually cause the AirPort Base Station to go unresponsive. High traffic or a large number of workstations connected to the base station make the problem happen faster.
We solved this problem completely by reverting to v5.5.1 firmware everywhere. They've all been rock solid since.
We tested v5.7 firmware when it came out, but it exhibited the same problem.
Apple is aware of the problem at the highest levels of engineering and is supposedly working on a fix. Here's hoping for v5.8...

  • Why does javascript always stop responding for many websites?

I earlier FF versions I didnt have that.
Only in the latest ones, currently in 3.5.12
Javascript regularly stops responding especially on googole.com and wikipedia.
I would like to attach an image but in the initial post people cant attach images.
I will post an example image in my answer to my post.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Base Statiojn stops responding

I have been having a problem for the last week. The extreme base station stops responding about every 10 minutes. The wireless signal stays up but I cannot connect to any other machines or the internet. Also the airport utility cannot locate the base station, put it does see the airport express I have.
If I unplugged the base and plug it back in it works again for anywhere from 10-30 minutes, then fails again. Watching the utility it reports a WDS Error occasionally but then goes back to green.
    So any suggestions?
Also how can I reload the firmware?

  • Base station needs restarting regularly to get connection to internet again

    Hi,
I've reverted to 5.5.1 firmware on my white round b/g extreme base station with internal modem in the hope it'd make restarting the base station on a regular basis not necessary, but it hasn't.
ethernet modem > base station > g3 powerbook
I think I've got it set up in a pretty standard way. Why do I need to keep restarting it? It seems to kind of grind to a halt, get, possibly slower and slower I think rather than suddenly stop working.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers,
    John.

Sounds to me like a DHCP distribution conflict, but hopefully somebody more knowledgeable than me will take another look now that I've bumped you to the top!

  • How do I make my Airport Extreme Base Station stop asking to update?

For awhile my Airport base station has been periodically asking to update its firmware.  But since everything is working fine and I've seen reports of windows computers having trouble connecting after stepping up to that version I'd rather leave it be.  Is there any way to force it to stop checking/asking?  It's a bit annoying that every time I turn on my computer the Airport Utility pops up demanding my attention.

Open AirPort Utility on your Mac and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab/label located just below the row of icons at the top of the window
Click the Options button near the bottom of the window
Remove the check mark next to Check for Firmware Updates on the next window
Click Done, then click Update to save your new settings and allow 25-30 seconds for the AirPort Extreme to restart and power back up

  • Airport base station lets Mac print but stopped letting my PCs print, why?

The only thing I've done differently lately was download the new upgrade for OSX, which was yesterday. Up until now, my airport base station has been operating fine. I have it directly connected to my G4 and also use it for my Sony wireless laptop (new) and a Sony desktop (new). The desktop is located in another room and connects via Airport Express. The laptop is on my desk, next to my G4. The printer is by my G4 and laptop. And the Airport Extreme is on the wall above my monitor.
Anyway, yesterday, about halfway through an 11-page document, the printer stopped printing to my laptop. It will print, btw, if I unplug it from the Airport Extreme, reconfigure the port from an IP/TCP and plug it into my laptop. What would cause it to stop printing via Airport Extreme? My DSL Internet connection still works on all four computers.
My printer is an HP color laserjet 2550L. I called Hewlett Packard this morning and talked to customer support. I was informed that HP does not support network connections and could not help me because I was using a Mac product, the Airport Extreme. So I asked, what if I wasn't and directly connected the printer to my PC? So they explained how to configure the port for my printer, and it does print now, but it won't work on the Airport Extreme.
I also restored my PC to the way it was last month, just in case I had downloaded something that interfered, but that did not help the situation.
I also tried using emulation software that let me go to a Windows-based Web site through Citrex on my Mac, and I could access the Web site on my Mac, but I could not print. It prints otherwise from my Mac, though. This is just the weirdest thing.
Do you think my Airport Extreme is defective? It's pretty new. Maybe 2 or 3 months old and has worked fine up until now.

Have you upgraded the firmware in your airport extreme?
Also, you may want to consider installing Bonjour for windows on your windows machine and set up the printer via the Bonjour printer configuration.

  • Why have all 3 airport express base stations stopped working, BT have checked and improved line still not working?

Why have all 3 airport express base stations stopped working, other users are on ipads and BT have checked and improved line but I still have an intermittent/no connection?

You must tell us the whole setup.. what is the main router?? How are the express connected to each other?
On ipad it works ok?? But you are on a computer?? MBP early 2011 running Lion?? That doesn't work.. even if you are right next to the main router??
Plugged in by ethernet does it work??
Have you installed a wireless diagnostic program.. ?? Actually Lion has one installed but hidden I believe.
Later version bought it to the surface.
    About Wireless Diagnostics
If you do run Lion please install the 5.6 airport utility as it will give you loads more info on how the units are connected.. and link speeds for extend wireless.
How to load 5.6 into later Lion & ML
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.

  • Base station stopped working

I got my Airport base station about a month ago and it has worked fine thus far. Then this morning it just seemed to stop working. The light is solid green, but my Airport Administration Utility won't recognize the base station (it's directly underneath the laptop, where it has always been). I plugged my ethernet cable directly into the laptop and my connection's fine, so it must be the base station.
    Any ideas?

    Hi DanielleB,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Have you recently installed any programs, upgraded systems, or installed firmware? You should reset your base station. Sometimes I have to do a Factory Default Reset but that should be your last option.
    I hope that helps,
