Basic Mask Reveal

I can't for the life of me figure out how to do a mask reveal.
For example I have an image that I want to zoom in on (just zoom inside the mask), zoom back and move to a different (inside the mask) place on the image. I've seen this done on lots of apple related demos.
The builder actions only scales the whole image.
Any help to a keynote newbie ?
Thanks,
Dan

Those tutorial videos aren't of Keynote presentations that have this effect themselves -- I am almost certain they were put together using something like Final Cut.
That said, if want the mask to be static, you could get a similar effect doing as I suggested. Take the background image you want, and create a hole in it the size of the changing area you want (the image type will have to be PNG or PDF for this to work). Put this image on your slide, and Lock it in place (using the Arrange menu item). Now put your main image on the slide and send it behind the masking image. You can now apply various actions to your main image, and the "viewport" will remain static.

  • Layer mask reveal w/drop-shadow

    I have an image silohetted on a trasparent backgound. In order to put a drop shadow on it that only affects the bottom half of the image, I duplicated the layer, added a drop shadow layer style and a layer mask>reveal to fade the effect of the drop shadow. This worked but the layer masked added black or darker coloring to the over all image - then I reduced the fill on that particular layer to 0% and still got the discoloration. Why is the overall image getting darker with the addtion of the lay mask on the layer style? Thanks for your time and consideration up front.

    I guess you disabled "knockout" in the Drop Shadow options. If the layer with the shadow had been the lowest layer then it wouldn't have mattered.
    Something else that may be useful in future is the Create Layer(s) command for converting Layer Style effects to regular pixel layers.

  • Basic masking and keyframe it?

    I have this shot where someone passes in front of the camera. I'd like to add a line of text after this person passes but I'd like to mask and keyframe it so it looks like the text was behind this person...or almost as if it were being revealed after the person passes. Is this possible from within final cut?

    Should be easy enough; you'll have to crop the text 100% in the opposite direction of your character (so if he/she is walking right, use the left crop), then go frame-by-frame and as your character passes, removing the crop so it edges up against the character in every frame. Make sense?

  • Add Text to a Draggable Mask?

    I guess this is pretty basic but if you can help a new user I'd appreciate any thoughts ... thanks.
    I hope I included everything you need to know.
    I want to add a line of text to a small mask - the mask reveals a portion of an image underneath - the user drags the mask around the stage
    2 movie clips
    1. an image that fills the 900x700 stage
    2. a 200x200 rect with blur that acts as a "window" to the image
    The code below works fine (almost - see comment) but how do I add text to the mask?
    Looked up "mask" in Help but can't figure out how to apply it...thanks for taking a look.
    img_mc.mask = mask_mc;
    mask_mc.buttonMode = true;
    img_mc.cacheAsBitmap = true; // for the blur
    mask_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, dF);
    mask_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, rF);
    stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, rF); // I thought this prevents dragging off the stage but it doesn't work
    function dF(event:MouseEvent):void
        mask_mc.startDrag();
    function rF(event:MouseEvent):void
        mask_mc.stopDrag();

    if you want the text to be visible and not to be part of the mask, it can't be in the mask layer.  so, your thread title is misleading.  you don't want text to be part of a mask, draggable or not.
    you want your text to "appear" to be draggable along with your mask.  so, what you should do is to create your draggable mask (that doesn't include the text) and when you start to drag the mask (usually using a mousedown event), you start a loop that updates the text position based on the mask position.  for example:
    yourmask.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN,startdragF);
    yourmask.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP,stopdragF);
    function startdragF(e:Event){
    yourmask.startDrag();
    yourmask.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,textF);
    function stopdragF(e:Event){
    yourmask.stopDrag();
    yourmask.removeEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,textF);
    function textF(e:Event){
    yourtextfield.x=yourmask.x;
    yourtextfield.y=yourmask.y;

  • Trying to resize a mask for use with a Reshape Effect

    The problem is that I have two pictures of faces that are about 25% different in scale, and I'm trying to get them close to matching so that the morph looks good.
    I found a few workarounds on Creative Cow, but none of them seemed to work for me:
    1) Pasting the mask into a solid then resizing the solid appropriately, then pasting the new mask from the new solid into the other image.
    2) Using keyframes with mask shape to scale the mask directly
    3) Highlighting the mask using the common shape tool (unsure if they're talking about the rectangle shape tool here, Google revealed nothing), and then resizing the selected area.
    Here's the link from Creative Cow with all these ideas:
    HOW TO RESIZE A MASK (instructions) : Adobe After Effects
    Just to make it more concrete, one image is scaled to 75%, and the other to 110%. When I paste the mask from the 75% image to the 110% one, it appears too big -- as if it had been drawn on a 100% version of the image. And when I paste the mask from the 110% one onto the 75% one, it appears too small.
    And I'm sure anyone who could answer this question already knows this, but the Reshape effect requires each layer to have two masks on it, one for the image that you start off with and one for the image you end with.
    Thanks,
    Sanjay

    The mask paths are calculated in relation to the layer size. Scale up the layer and the basic mask information, the vectors used to draw the path, scale with the layer but the root data does not change. Draw a 50 X 50 pixel mask on a layer that is 50 X 50 pixels, copy the path and then past it on a layer that is 500 X 500 and they will be the same size. Now draw a different mask on a 50 X 50 layer that has been scaled 1000% and then paste it to a layer that is not scaled and see what happens. Return the original scaled layer to 100% and check out the size of the two masks. They should be the same.

  • A nicer playback..? A mask..?

    Hello,
    I'm deepening my transition from FCP to Premiere... and have a few more questions. I'd be happy if one can help.
    1a - Might seems simple, but: Is there a way to prevent Premiere to relocate the CTI in the middle of the TL when playing back..? It does that from a certain level of zoom in, not if I'm havong a larger overview. I personnally find it very annoying, as the CTI is a focus point for editors. And PP just moves it off. very disturbing visually. At a even more zoomed in level, it let the TL move while keeping the CTI in the middle. Also pretty disturbing. Is there a way to change that?
    1b - And when playing back, if I move the CTI to another location, it doesn't playback on... Is there a way to make it do so...?
    2 - Is there a way to create a (basic) mask on a clip? I didn't find out. I use that often to replace the content of a screen in a clip, allowing me to play with the background layer. FCP had this 4 and 8 point garbage mask. Not soooo powerful, but still doing the job. How about PP? Or do I have to go to AE, which I did for now?
    3 - Further on, just a little remark about the performance... Sorry but if I just speed up a clip (and yes, at 1300%, it can happen) and thereafter add a filter (like third part plugin fxfactory).. woooh, PP isn't there anymore.. I end up exporting the clip and then applyuing the fx (which is then really not flexible, if I later need a adjustment on that one). FCP could handle much more than that, eben on 32bits, sorry... But maybe I have missed something..?
    Thanks!

    And no, no, I'm not going to go back to FCP, as I said before; it's just the need for speed and the first quirks that come up. I'm glad for other features PP has, and above all, that it is more stable on MLion, that it can handle many formats etc etc....
    (i think i'll make this my signature... ;-)

    Hi Shooternz,
    thanks!
    I indeed didn't look in keying and should have also thought of typing "garbage" in the fx search.
    Scrolling is now good, what I call "smooth", not what PP does..
    About the 3rd partPG, well, this  was my example, but I see PP suffering when I play with speed and fx, even the PP ones.

  • Layer Mask not working

    I have Photoshop CS5 and until tonight, I could add a layer mask, paint it with a black paint brush, and it would show the layer underneith. Not, the black paint brush does nothing.  This is so frustrating, I even uninstalled and reinstalled the product and it was of no help.  I must be doing something wrong. I checked the help article on this and followed the instructions carefully, except the part about Layer, Layer Mask, reveal all, because reveal all was grayed out.  Any suggestions?

    Steve,
    That will take a real bite out of editing a Layer Mask, as will having the Blendin Mode of the Brush set to something, besides Normal.
    Glad that you found it, and happy editing,
    Hunt

  • No "Paint" Visible on Layer Mask (CS6 Photoshop)

    So, when you're editing a picture using the layer mask, you have the black paint on the paint brush to select it. You paint it, and you see in the side-panel: the right side which is the layer, and the left side which is the white box with black paint on it. You'd think the black paint would also be where you can see it while you're editing the damn picture. But I am not proper enough to know how to make this "paint"... appear! Where the hell is my "paint," and why wouldn't it be on the main picture? Damn it, I just want to make a basic mask. Thanks for your help.

    Hey, thank you! One other problem, though: now it's just a white screen with black paint. I need to see what I'm painting around. Thanks Again!

  • Query on layer mask

    Hi All,
              I'm modifying dissolve plugin. If I apply a mask on any layer (mask added via Layer Menu->Layer Mask-> Reveal All) and then apply custom filter with mask in focus (i.e. after clicking on mask in Layer panel),  gFilterRecord->planes is 1. Can anyone please tell me what data that plane is having (i.e. R, G, B or Alpha or any other) as I'm not able to show the preview for my custom filter. Or is it the whole RGBA data?
    In case the description is not clear please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Dheeraj

    Hi All,
              I load a png image with transparency in photoshop. Now I apply my custom plugin. The number of planes I get is 4 including alpha channel. Now if I enable the transparency lock, the number of planes I get is 3. So the preview that I create will have white background in transparent areas as there is no alpha channel information. This is understandable as I have enabled transparency lock.
    But when I applied standard Texturizer Filter with Transparent lock ON, the preview generated is still having transparency. How are they doing it?
    Thanks,
    Dheeraj

  • Stripping/silhouette/masking/transparency etc.

    Hello,
    I'm doing a photo shoot on white with the intention to give the client silos. I know basic masking, but I've never had to delivered stripped images before. To make matters difficult, many of the objects will be neutral colored jewelry against white, selective focus, with a soft shadow included. In other words, low contrast, neutral colored edges against white.
    1. Is there a recommended technique or plug in for this brand of challenge?
    2. Which format is the best way to deliver the final product to the client? Should they get a flat TIFF with a transparent background? (I never liked the look of that checkerboard background myself.) Or should I give them a white background and convert my mask to a clipping path?
    Any and all advice is most appreciated.
    Intel Mac OS 10.5.4, CS3

    I think a tool which might be of great value (which I seem to pitch a great deal) is Peel Off White. I'm imagining that you want your objects with shadow to be available for placement on other images or backgrounds without any fringing or strange artifacts. I also imagine you want the soft shadow to be placed with the object image. To do that I'd create a hard selection of the object photographed, inverse it and run Peel off White (on a floating layer not the Background). Then I'd take a look at the result on a couple of other backgrounds to see how it looked. Depending how pure your white background might be to start with, you might select the object contract the selection by a pixel or three and run POW to make 'anti-aliased' edges. Anyway, here's Peel Off White...

    Oh and you'd send the file as a TIF.

  • How to paste selection into a mask

    So If I have two images, ones tha alpha (both png for arguments ake) how do I make one the mask of the other? Using CS1?
    Sometimes I fudge the combination right, sometimes I blunder the shortcuts for ages and end up giving up. Have looked in help/online/in manual etc.
    Cheers
    AC

    Sorry but neither method seems to work for me.
    So I make the mask greyscale.
    I select all.
    Do I copy?
    Then I go Select>Load Selection, and Choose "Background Gray"
    then I select The Colour Image.
    And I go Layer>Add Layer Mask> reveal All
    And that gives me 100% White mask :-( THats trying your first method as best I can understand it.
    Second Method:
    Select all of greyscale Mask image,
    Copy,
    select colour version,
    Create std Mask,
    Alt Click in Mask...
    And in doing the alt click it turns pure white, theres no pop-up menu offering the paste option.
    rightclicking gives 8 options none of which I understand, all of which scramble my brain like eggs.
    Can you suggest at what point I am able to screw both these methods up? Remember this is CS1
    Thanks

  • Layers *reveal all* function

    I have for many years used this funktion to blend 2 pictures into each other, so they just fade into each other. This was working by using the tool: LAYER - ADD LAYER MASK - REVEAL ALL.
    After that I could use my Gradient tool and make the Gradient I liked.
    But suddenly nothing happends hmm...
    I still work in an old version Photoshop 7 but it should work here too I guess.
    Please tell me if the function was changed to work differently.
    Best regards
    Jürgen

    Is your gradient tool set to another blend mode? You might try resetting the tool per the FAQ: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b51428/2

  • Models Comp Card Layout

    Yes I am new to Photoshop.  Perhaps these might be dumb questions.  If you are easily offended by questions of a "rookie nature" please feel free the stop reading now and save yourself the aggravation.  If you are forging ahead, "Thank You So Much!"
    I am attempting to make a Model's Comp Card.  The layout size is 8.5 X 5.5.  One picture on the front and two on the back.  Although I have a template to plug the pictures into, I find that the pictures are not fitting into the slots properly.  When I attempt to resize them I find that the proportions are off (too wide, too tall for the space) -------------This is problem #1
    So now I am going to discard the template and just plug the pictures into a clean, new white background in Photoshop CC.  I open a new file and change the page orientation to horizontal.
    And is it possible to have the page orientation horizontal while keeping the imported pictures vertical?  Can these two functions be separate?
    How can I be sure that the actual size of the page will be 8.5 X 5.5 when it is printed out?
    FYI I am using Photoshop CC and I am on a PC.
    Thanks
    ohhhhhhhhhh! I GET how to make sure paper size is 8.5 X 5.5. I just figured that one out!

    I am glad you figured out page sizes. However since this for beginners, we must try to include answers to all questions to other new users will learn.
    When starting out there are two ways to get your document size. The first is the new document, File>New then in the new dialog box you pick what medium you will be designing for such as the web, print, video and so on.
    Then you can either pick from a preset size or type in the height, width and resolution in the appropriate boxes - The height and width values can be pixels, inches, centimeters, and I think pica's. (don't recall sorry) The ppi or resolution value is only important for print when you are using a physical size for width and height. The two together determine the pixel dimensions. Otherwise typing in pixel values, you can ignore the ppi unless you will be printing. The pixel values divided by the ppi will tell you what the physical print size will be.
    ex.
    inches x ppi = pixels
    pixels / ppi = inches
    OK, that's the first way. You can also get the document size from a document. File>Open the document window will now have the same size as the image you loaded.
    Now lets deal with wrong ratio.
    A ratio is the width to height values - If both width and height are same, this is a square ratio or 1:1
    That is as detailed as I will get for now, as it can get overly complicated and out of scope for this thread, plus it pushes my comfort level a bit. (don't tell any one)
    OK, If the image is too wide for your use or too high, it could be said the ratio is not correct as it does not match your needs.
    So you have two options, you can scale an image, which may be needed anyways just to get one side to match. Make sure when you scale an image you hold down the shift key to constrain the scaling otherwise you will distort your image.
    To scale an image-
    Select the layer the image is on in the layers panel
    Now on the keyboard press ctrl-t for windows or cmd-t on a mac. This will put you in transform mode.
    Place the cursor over a small square in one of the four corners of your image. You will see the cursor change shape.
    Hold down your mouse button and the shift key then drag away from the image to scale up or drag towards the image to scale down.
    When you are satisfied you can press the enter or return key on the keyboard or press the large checkmark in the top tool bar.
    To rotate an image you would take the same steps however you would place the cursor outside one of the four corners and drag sideways.
    Ok, lets say one side fits and the other side is still too large - By the way that would be preferable than having one side too small, it is easier to remove data than to add it.
    At this point to remove data to make the other side smaller, you would use the crop tool found in the toolbar on the left side. You can either type in the size you need in the top tool bar or drag the crop tool across the image until it is the right size. Finally you could just leave the default crop as is then move each side inward until it fits size you want. Basically there is three ways to use the crop tool and it is up to you to decide what works best for you.
    Note: The crop tool affects the entire document. - You can save this image after it is cropped then place this file into another document.
    Another option is that you could use the rectangle selection tool and drag out the size you need or type in the top tool bar. Then Select Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal Selection. This will create a mask based on the selection you made and hide anything out side of that selection for that layer. (This is layer based where as crop is document based)
    A hidden tip: You can drag the crop tool outward to add canvas space.
    And finally vertical vs horizontal images vs the canvas.
    The document can be either horizontal or vertical by reversing the height and the width in the new dialog box, by changing the two values in the Image>Image Size dialog box, by adding space to the canvas in the Image>Canvas Size dialog box, or by using the crop tool.
    Whereas the image is layer based so transforms to the rescue. Same as scaling.  Don't forget to look at the top tool bar, those values can be handy. You can right click to choose a different dimension type. (You can also type in the dimension ex. let say it is in percentages and you want inches just type the value and the abbreviation like this 2in or 45px)
    Remember masks that is the layer based version of cropping.
    Good luck and any more questions ask...

  • How do I create a pond ripple effect?

    Hey guys, I'm designing a wrap for a hummer. My client wants it to look like the hummer has a force field and show a few bullets hitting the truck and causing a ripple. I googled this and found out that the "zig zag" filter under "distort" does this. Only problem is, this option is greyed out on my comp. It could be that my project file is half a gigabite (required for the size of printing on the truck). Could someone please help me figure out how to use this option or even suggest another program I can use to do this? I can't think of any other way.
    This is the design I want the effect on
    This is the effect I want.

    Hi again.
    Let's start at the beginning. Perspective. Shock waves propogate in concentric circles from the point of impact. Viewed at a 90 degree angle to the plane being struck, the shock waves will appear exactly as that, concentric circles, not ellipses. The side of the Hummer is vertical, so the viewing angle of a typical observer will be about 90 degrees. Creating concentic ellipses will make it appear as though the shockwaves are out of plane with the side of the Hummer.
    My first post was a demonstration of principle. How to create the basic skeleton. What happens next depends on what you think the shock wave should look like. I wouldn't think it would look exactly like a high energy impact on a force field. A drop falling into a pond is not exactly high energy. They will both have concentric rings, but the distribution and profile of the waves would be different, I would expect. A physicist could properly inform us.
    Anyway, I repeated a slight variation on the process on a 732mb file. As you note, the Zig Zag filter was not available. I didn't spend time perfecting the wave frequency and such.
    1. Make a circular selection where you want the shockwave. (Make it elliptical if you're still not convinced about that.)
    2. Copy the selection to a new layer. Ctrl+J is the easiest way.
    3. Ctrl+Click on the layer thumb to create a transparency selection.
    4. Convert the selection into a Layer Mask. Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal Selection.
    5. Select the Mask thumb. Ctrl+Click on the Mask thumb. You should get a circular selection.
    6. Apply the gradient (radial) to the selection from the center. (You're painting the gradient onto the layer mask.) It will look like nothing happened.
    7. Apply Bevel/Emboss to taste. Now you will be able to see the rings. I used the Ring-Double gloss contour to tart it up.
    8. The Ripple effect is available at this file size. I applied it to to taste.
    The number and spacing of the rings is determined by the number and spacing of the alternating 0 and 100 percent transparency pairs on the gradient applied to the mask. It's endlessly adjustable. If you want, you could double down with another layer, as in the tutuorial. The actual appearance of the rings can be modified for days just in the effects pallet. When you add Ripple or other effects to the rings, I would think you could get just about anything you want. Without too much trouble. It all depends on what you think a projectile striking a force field should look like. You can paint on the layer mask to lighten or darken portions.
    But I just had another thought. With the Marqee Tool set to rectangular, select a work area surrounding where you want the shock wave. Copy it to a new layer. Create a new document and paste the new layer into it. Then you should be able to use the Zig Zag effect as in the tutorial. Then paste or drag the layers back into the original document and align to the original work layer. Delete both work layers. I just tried it and it worked for me in my 732mb file. But using the Zig Zag pond ripple seems to offer less flexiblity than the layer mask method. If assigned this task I would use a mask.
    FWIW.
