BASIS or PI administration

HI
I have been working as BASIS administrator since last two years.
Now on my current project I am getting a chance to work on SAP PI.
I want to know whether  specialized jobs like  SAP PI administrator  exit.
Should I stick to BASIS or develop expertise as PI administrator.
I want your guidance on this . Which one is better career wise?
Is it possible to shift to Business Process Management and  Integration with PI background and how is this option career wise.
With regards

I am not sure if my idea about the jobs is right. I am not sure if I can tell the message, but:
what I have heard, tried, both PI and BASIS are very important, demanded and (what surprised me!) are connected together very much. The idea is the PI (and some more things like connectors and stuff) are expanding the basis from one system to many. PI is not only about messaging, it is also about the security, system users (not dialog, or how do you call that) and some more interesting integration stuff. If the basis "opening" will be about the administration and stuff, it will be very close to what you have done so far, I believe. Only if that would be some development work, only then it will not stick the "basis" topic. In that case the experience will widen your view and knowledge and be helpful for you tu understanf the position of your systems in the landscape (a distributed one, not one system) and the demans on your system/s.
Accept the PI work and 1) you can always withdraw from the new area and make you money in basis or 2) you will widen your basis knowledge to "distributed" systems (and/or some development).
The choice is clear, accept that.

  • BASIS Abbreviation

    Hi All,
While surfing some SAP groups, I came across the full form of BASIS. I was wondering whether it is authentic or just someone throwing a prank.
As per them BASIS stands for : <b>Business Application Software Integration System</b>
    Seems to good but...
    Please validate.
    Regards,
    <i>Puneet Gupta.</i>

Basis is a business application software integrated solution. Simply, Basis is the administration of the SAP system.
It's a piece of middleware which links the application with the database and the operating system. Basis is most commonly associated with the GUI interface to the SAP, and the Basis administrator is an SAP, professional who is responsible for configuring the SAP environment, including the GUI screens and SAP application servers.
    Warm Regards,
    JATIN.

  • What is the relationship between BASIS and XI?

what is the relationship between BASIS and XI?
whether we have to acquire knowlege to explore BASIS for XI

    HI Gabriel
BASIS is the administration of SAP system, BASIS team will be responsible for installation, maintenance, transport, authorizations in the SAP system.Taking care of the Server in all the situation, applying Support Packages, patches, fixes, Monotioring the Jobs.Participate in requirements gathering, assessment, design, configuration and testing activities for SAP security and other issues
    XI is also a middleware.
The work of XI Basis starts from installation of XI server and it inculdes many system related things such as Installing Adapter framework, Maintaining RFC connections, Roles and Authorization, Updating Patches etc....
Check this link on Management of XI and go through it completely. You will ahve clear idea about the role performed by XI Administrator or XI Basis:

  • Is Basis the right starting point for I ?

    Hi:
I have an MS in Comp Sc. and ~ 2yrs IT working as an Oracle/SQL Server developer and Business Objects/ Crystal expert.
I was considering sap as an erp career - being a techie I read basis and abap/netweaver could be possible entry points -
I will be working as a shadow with some folks at work but any expert advice on my decision from some experience will be gr8 help at this stage !!
    tx !

    Hi,
Welcome to SAP world. Before selecting any stack of SAP first go thru the basic concepts of it.
BASIS is for administration purpose such as monitoring SAP server and many other SAP system administration work. ABAP is the programming language of SAP. Whatsoever programming is done in SAP, it thru ABAP. Functional consultaant gives the requirement and technical person do the coding using ABAP.
Netweaver is the another SAP product which is having various stacks such as EP, XI, WAS, MDM, BI etc. For info on Netweaver check this homepage of Netweaver on SDN. Here you will find information about all stacks:
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/netweaver
Once you check out these information then you will be in a better condition to select the proper sap track as per your need. As you wrote that you are a techie then ABAP or Netweaver EP can be good option for you as here you will get coding.
    All the best.
    P.S. Reward points if helpful.

    Hi,
It's very nice to see a Separate special corner for BASIS..
I think there will be one category with name BASIS(which includes all the basis and Netweaver administration related topics) in SDN FORUMS also so that it makes very easy to search for the solutions in one group.

  • Analyzer 6.5.1.2.01063 Gifs problem

i have a problem when i put an animated gif in a report, when i want to open the report, show me the following error" An unknown exception ocurred while communicating with the server.; nested exception is:java.lang.NullPointerException"how can i solve this problem?thanks

6.5.1 runs on JRE 1.3.1.04, 6.2.1 runs JRE 1.3.0.02. The application looks for the JRE in different folders. It will be a onetime download for the user. You can change the runtime on the 6.5.1 release (Hyperion won't support it but your user field would not have to "re-download".To change your classID do the following:Browse to the <drive:>\hyperion\analyzer\appserver\webapps\Analyzer6_server directory. Open Administrator.jsp in notepad (hold down the shift key and right click on the file. You should see a menu option call ?Open With??, select that and select Notepad from the drop down menu.~ Do a find on ?classid=? (ignoring the ??)~ Change the classid= from "clsid:<%= com.hyperion.analyzer.utils.general.HYAURLParamHandler.getJREClassID(request) %>" to match the classID in the Administrator.html (6.2.1)~ Next look for codebase="<%= com.hyperion.analyzer.utils.general.HYAURLParamHandler.getJRECodeBaseValue(request) %>"> (this should be 4 lines below the ?classid=? line.~ Change the codebase to match the code base listed in Administrator.html~ Save file changes~ Perform the above steps on the file Analyzer.jsp. This will allow you to control the JRE codebase. One word of caution... Hyperion tested and built on a particualr version of JRE for a reason. Unless it is a pain to change the JRE on clients (several hundred users), I would advise upgrading to the JRE 1.3.1.04

  • Difference between logical file path and physical file path

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me why logical file path is required and why physical file path is required? What exactly is the difference bet them?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    PS.

    Hi,
The function module FILE_GET_NAME convert a logical path into its corresponding physical path.
The advantage of using logical pathes within your applications is obivous:
If you need to change the physical path you just adjust it within transaction FILE yet no changes are required to your application.
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp2005vp/helpdata/en/25/ab3a57df3b11d189fc0000e829fbbd/frameset.htm
The file names that you use in ABAP statements for processing files are physical names. This means that they must be syntactically correct filenames for the operating system under which your R/3 System is running. Once you have created a file from an ABAP program with a particular name and path, you can find the same file using the same name and path at operating system level.
Since the naming conventions for files and paths differ from operating system to operating system, ABAP programs are only portable from one operating system to another if you use the tools described below.
To make programs portable, the R/3 System has a concept of logical filenames and paths. These are linked to physical files and paths. The links are created in special tables, which you can maintain according to your own requirements. In an ABAP program, you can then use the function module FILE_GET_NAME to generate a physical filename from a logical one.
Maintaining platform-independent filenames is part of Customizing. For a full description, choose Tools ® Business Engineer ® Customizing, followed by
Implement. projects ® SAP Reference IMG. On the next screen, choose Basis Components System Administration ® Platform-independent File Names.
For a more detailed description of the function module FILE_GET_NAME, enter its name on the initial screen of the Function Builder and choose Goto Documentation. On the next screen, choose Function module doc.
Another way of maintaining platform-independent filenames is to use the Transaction FILE. The following sections provide an overview of the transaction.
To create a logical filename, choose Logical filename definition, client-independent from the Navigation group box in Transaction FILE, then choose New entries. You define logical filenames
You can either define a logical filename and link it to a logical path (as displayed here), or you can enter the full physical filename in the Physical file field. In the latter case, the logical filename is only valid for one operating system. The rules for entering the complete physical filename are the same as for the definition of the physical path for the logical file. To display further information and a list of reserved words, choose Help.
If you link a logical path to a logical file, the logical file is valid for all syntax groups that have been maintained for that logical path. The filename specified under Physical file replaces the reserved word  in the physical paths that are assigned to the logical path. To make the name independent of the operating system, use names that begin with a letter, contain up to 8 letters, and do not contain special characters.
    Save your changes.
    regards,
    Omkar.

I was seeing this error after upgrading to SP16.  In my case, I was able to fix by the following:
    1.  Login to the portal and navigate to System Administration --> Support --> Portal Runtime --> Application Console
    2.  Select com.sap.km.application and click "Show"
    3.  Refresh the application and restart the two services.
    Hope that helps.
