Batch capture logged clips makes subclips that are invisible in sequence

Any ideas?
I log a series of clips (the icon is the square master clip icon). They are offline until I batch capture. However, once I batch capture, they become subclips(jaggy-edge subclip icon). They can play in the viewer and they are viewable in Quicktime. However, once I put them in the sequence, they are only black, even after rendering. HOWEVER, if I do a capture now off of the SAME tape w/ the SAME settings it will play just fine (after render) in the SAME sequence.
Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks in advance

Okay, finally able to do a couple of tests. I started a new project w/ settings for capturing good ol' NTSC DV, logged some footage and then batch captured (ntsc footage) -- no problem at all. The clips were clips, not subclips. Then I went into a project for DVCPro HD 720 30p, and pulled some clips from my original low res project into the HD project. Made those offline, then batch captured those at the full HD resolution. Not a problem there either. Then I went back into the original low res project, made a clip offline, recaptured it at full HD res, no problem. Soo.... I think there is some connection between what I've been capturing at my "low res HD" setting and the problem of turning the logged clips into subclips upon capture.
All that said...I think I'm ok. At least I know now when I do need to capture it all in full HD res, I'll be able to, and it will relink into my project correctly as visible clips.
Also, how can you mark somthing "helpful' if it has already been marked "solved"...it is not undoable, correct?

When you move or copy the compound clips with their events into an external drive all the events should be there. Not clear on why you want to move them into a single event. You can drag and drop from one event to another.
Why are you using compound clips? You can simply copy the project from each machine with used media onto the external drive and that should do it.

  • Accidentally hit "remove unused", had a bunch of clips and subclips that disappeared. Can I undo?

Premiere was freezing and in the process of trying to figure it out I (stupidly) hit Project -> Remove Unused. I had a bunch of clips and subclips that I had made that I haven't yet put in any sequence. Is there any way to undo this action or did I just remove all of my subclips and I'll have to start over again? Let me know if you have any ideas!

CTRL-Z may help, or otherwise revert to an auto-saved project.

  • Any way to re-capture logged clips to anamorphic setting?

    Hello-
I have an FCP project with containing clips with a 16:9 aspect ratio captured with 4:3 aspect ratio setting. I'd like to recapture all of the logged clips using the anamorphic capture setting. However, all the capture information is embedded in the clips, so, even if I set the capture preference to anamorphic, the clips still come through as 4:3 when I attempt to re-batch capture.
Is there anyway to globally change the capture setting to anamorphic with clips that have already been captured at 4:3?
    Thanks....

If you are talking about DV, there is absolutely no need to recapture. The difference between 4:3 and 16:9 DV is really in how FCP interpretes the pixels- they are both 720x480.
Go to the Browser and you can add a check mark in the ANAMORPHIC column. Voila, you now have anamorphic clips without recapturing.

edit: I'm slow slow slow. To elaborate on what Tallguy said, if you need to fix the aspect ratio of the clips you've already placed in a 16:9 timeline, select all the clips in the timeline, right (control) click and from the popup menu select: Remove Attributes>Video Attributes>Distort.

  • Batch Capture Log Template

Does anyone know of an app or spreadsheet template that will make it easier to create a capture log--so I don't have type in the repeated colons and semi-colons and will possibly go to the next cell once the required TC numbers have been entered?
    thanks

Drop frame and non-drop frame both have the same number of frames. No frames are "dropped". What is "dropped" are some frame numbers.
Think of timecode as frame addresses.
If video ran at 30 frames per second, in an hour 60 * 60 * 30 frames would go by (108,000 frames) and the timecode at the end of that time would be 1 hour, or 01:00:00 or 3,600 complete seconds of 30 frame counting timecode.
However, frames go by at a slightly slower rate (slower by 1 part in 1000, or 1/10th of 1 percent) of 29.97 frames per second. So in an hour of time on the wall clock, only 60 * 60 * 29.97 frames go by, or 107,892 frames. The timecode at that time would be 59:56:12 or 3596.4 complete seconds of 30 frame counting timecode.
This is all well and good, except the clock on the wall says 1 hour, and the clock counting timecode addresses says 59min56secs12frames. If you're running a TV station, this is confusing.
So in order to make the timecode on the tape deck match the clock on the wall, the difference needs to be fixed, so that at 1 hour the timecode reads 1:00:00 even though the frame rate is 29.97.
The difference between the theoretical 30 and the real 29.97 is 108 frames in an hour. To make up that difference in Drop Frame timecode, two frames of the counting (addresses) are skipped each minute on the minute. So at 00:59:29 the next frame is called 01:00:02, skipping two frames of numbering.
This is done on every minute, except the even 10 minutes. So for 54 minutes out of the hour, two frames of counting are skipped. For 6 minutes out of the hour, no frames are skipped. 2 frames times 54 minutes is 108 frames, or the difference we needed.
No frames were "dropped", only some frame numbering addresses were skipped to help the clock on the wall match the clock on the video tape deck or computer.
Drop frame and non-drop frame timecode both play the same number of frames in an hour of real time.
The difference is that non-drop frame timecode has consecutive frame numbering addresses, and drop-frame timecode does not have consecutive frame numbering addresses, as it has dropped 108 frames of the count over the course of an hour, when it skipped 2 frames of count 54 times.

  • Can I use this app to log on to computers that are not in a network

I'd like to be able to log on to a few clients' computers who are not on one network and be able to provide remote tech support.
Will this Remote Desktop app work for that, or does it only work for computers that are all on the same network?

Thanks so much.  I couldn't tell by reading all the literature if it was possible or not and no one at Apple could help.  I had a feeling it wasn't going to work the way I wanted it to.  I will check out LogMeIn and see if that suits better.
Appreciate very much your responding to me so quickly.
    Thank you!

  • Tape batch capture TC clip list

Does this software allow be to enter a list of clips with their time code start and stop and the computer then takes control of my tape camcorder and just captures
    what clips I want?

    You could try this:
    http://sight-creations.com/free_stuff/timecodeClock3.zip
You can get specific details about it here:
    http://fx.svbtle.com/timecode-clock-3
It's a simple generator of 1 minute length that was built completely apart from the "built in" timecode generator which gets "hijacked" by FCPX no matter what. If you need more than one minute, you have the option of dragging out the generator to length keyframing the time changes at each minute (not recommended) or option drag a duplicate of the first instance (already set) and updating the start time of the next instance (much easier.) Cut whatever you don't need off the last instance.
This generator does not do real drop-frame, but you can change the last colon to a semicolon if you need it to look like drop-frame (not that anyone can really tell while it's running ) You can also modify this effect to be a simple clock (with 24-hr, 12-hr and 12-hr with PM marker options.)

  • How to identify clips in finder that are used in the timeline?

Heya, this is my first post to this forum and an issue ive been struggeling with for a while...
i am trying to archive my footage and reduce the amount of HDD space old projects are taking up. I have LOADS of footage i'm never going to use again saved in folders that i want to easily identify and get rid of. Is there any way in premier pro to 'tag' files that have been used in the timeline or even the project and then i can simply go and delete those that aren't. Similar to the feature in after effects that removes unused clips from the project (though that still leaves them on the drive).
this would also make transcoding the correct files much easier as i currently have to identify each one individually by using the show in finder option...
some help on this would be much appreciated
I'm using CS5 on a macbook to edit canon DSLR footage, is there any more information that you guys need?
    Cheers

In the Project Panel, click the flyout menu; that's the little stack o' pancakes thing in the upper right corner of the panel. Select "Metadata Display." In the search box, type "usage"--this will reveal the Video Usage and Audio Usage metadata labels. Check those to add them, and hit OK; they'll now be added to the columns in the Project Panel. Now, you can sort on those columns to filter by usage--the unused clips won't have a number associated with that column. Select them all, and if you really want to purge them from the drive, hit Ctrl/Cmd+Delete--that will remove the media from the drive.
If you just want to get rid of the clips, Project > Remove Unused will do that.

  • Batch capture / Subclip question

    Hey all,
I've logged tapes from DV marking in / out points and labeling the clips. I've selected "log clips" and then batch captured the clips. Sometimes, I've needed to batch capture 1 minute of footage from a 20 minute clip - and I don't want to recapture the whole 20 minute clip.
I've tried to make a subclip of the footage needed and just capture the subclip, but it wants to grab the whole 20 minute clip.
    Ideas?
    Thanks,
    Kevin
    PowerBook G4 15"   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   FCP HD 4.5

Subclips aren't captured, they are made from clips
ALREADY captured. If you needed shorter clips, you
need to log them that way before capturing ... or you
can make the 1 minute clip an "independent clip."
    -DH
Thanks for the reply. I identified the clip in the sequence I wanted to recapture. It's a 20 second soundbite with a DV glitch in it. I highlighted the clip, selected "make independant clip", and nothing seemed to happen. With that clip highlighted, I tried to recapture the clip, but it still said the duration of the recapture would be the length of the full original clip. All I need to do is recapture a short piece of the original. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    - KO

  • Mac Mail v. 7.1 (1827) spell checker makes spelling suggestions that are MISSPELLED!

I haven't been able to find this anywhere on the web so far, so thought I would post it here.
I am running Mavericks (v10.9.1) on a Mac Book Pro 17" (Early 2011).
When typing in Mac Mail (or Pages, etc.), my auto-spell check frequently makes suggestions that are misspelled.  For example, I typed "availabillty", and the auto-checker suggested "AVAILABILTY"(!?!).  The correct spelling, of course, being AVAILABILITY.
This has happened several times before, and I just didn't document any of the other misspellings.  I will add others, if that makes a difference.
I've tried to find access to the library to make corrections to the internal misspellings, but cannot seem to find and assuming not accessible??
Please help!  This is an incredibly annoying problem, making the spell-checking functionality essentially worthless having to stop and "spell-check the spell-checker" everytime.

    Pedro,
Thanks, I apprecaite the info, but you did not address my question.  The links you provided just explained the basics of spell-checking and how to do things like "learn new words".  The do not provide any "information regarding what I'm trying to accomplish".
Perhaps I didn't explain my problem clearly enough:  My problem is there are INCORRECT suggestions being made by the Apple spell-checker (or whatever library it's using).  In other words, I'm spelling a word correctly, and the auto-spell-checker is suggesting incorrect spellings to my correctly spelled word.
What I'm trying to accomplish is getting misspelled words out of the auto-correction library (and also figure out how they got in there in the first place).  Is there a way to edit the existing words in the spell-checking library (not just adding new ones, as the link you provided pointed out).
    Thanks,
    Dan

  • Canon Camera - Batch Capture Problems

Hi. I understand this is a common issue: I am using a Canon XL1 for interviews. I black out the tape in advance to avoid TC breaks, but when I use Batch Capture, I still run into "broken time code" messages. So, I end up using Capture Now, which is less efficient, so far as I can tell. I'm using a G5, 2.3 Gz, Dual Processor. As to Michael Grenadier's answer below, what does a firewire card do?
    Thanks, as always!
    Scott
    This from Michael Grenadier:
There have always been issues with canon cameras. Try capturing with firewire basic device preset and see if that helps. The broken timecode error can also indicate some other thruput problem. Making sure your camera and hard drive are on seperate firewire busses can often help this problem. You need to add your equipment and os/software configuration to your profile to help analyze the problem. If you're using a tower, even though there are multiple firewire ports, there is only ONE firewire bus. Adding a firewire card can help.

Maxx, Thanks. In the past, I've taken the pre-post
TC break approach, but I always end up with an error
and no batch capture. I thought Batch Capture
doesn't work when there are TC breaks? Is there a
    setting I'm missing?
We don't have a deck, so we use the XL1. I can try
    my small camcorder though.
Very good to know about the XL2 - can we have yours?
    hanks!
PLease take them both... I've been looking for an excuse to push for some new gear.
Typically I log all of my clips and then batch them from the browser. That way I can select a couple of clips at a time if the tape is that bad. And it has been before. We've got 1 shooter that likes to review shots but never rolls off any xtra tape before he does this. So everytime does it there's a TC break. But if the tape is bad or just doesn't have solid TC then you may be screwed.
Your camcorder will work just fine. I suggested this b/c that way you would at least know if you have a playback issue with your xl1 or if the tape just doesn't have solid TC.
Take a gander at Kevan's post as well. He asks some good questions and makes some good points as usual. I agree with what he said about blacking the tape. Back in my news days we had to do this and it was to be able to assemble edit deck to deck. No need to do this now though in this day and age of instant gratification. Boy I miss the days of blacking tapes, taking feeds, and sprinting through the news room with a tape as the anchor was leading into the story and tossing the tape to the tape op just in the nick o time... Ahh good times!

  • Premiere Pro CS5.5 Batch Capture Problems

    Hi,
I'm sorry for the repost, but the older questions I can find on this topic won't allow me to reply and they were never answered (last post several months ago).
I'm having the batch capture problem with Premiere Pro CS5.5. Capture with device control works great when single capturing. When I log clips and attempt to batch capture, though, I get the "capture failed: device not found" error in my capture log. I have checked through the FAQ and the complete premiere manual on batch capturing. I've set my device (still using a Canon XL1) and even checked the video size...it matches that of my project (someone on another forum mentioned that this could be an issue). I have had no luck.
Could anyone tell me if this issue has been resolved, or redirect me to a resolution?
Thanks in advance for any help!!
    Steve

I have encountered this problem if the current tape position is beyond the last recorded point when you start the batch capture or if any "OUT" points are beyond the last recorded position or if the capture spans any unrecorded portions of the tape. I always thought it was my camera but maybe it is a PPro issue.

  • Batch capture problems HDV

Hi we are trying to batch capture HDV 1080i 25fps footage filmed from both a Sony Z1 and Z7 camera in Final Cut Pro 7. The problem comes when we try and batch capture or clip capture logged footage in final cut pro, the tape seems to be stuck in a continuous preroll loop on the first clip that needs capturing, the only way to capture any footage is through capture now. Finally the capture deck we are using is a Sony HVR-M15AE deck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like there may not be enough preroll space on the source tape ie not enough preceding unbroken timecode to allow for the preroll time needed ... if so then you may need to try a shorter preroll for that clip. Check (and possibly edit) the preroll setting in your Audio / Video Settings >> Device Control Preset. (You may just want to create a temporary duplicate preset for this shorter preroll setting).
    Hope it helps
    Andy
