Beginner programmer just looking for some info...

Hey, I've posted a couple questions on here already today. And with those questions I've received a lot of great feed back. And I thank all of you for your help. But here's another question, and actually probably more important for me at this time than my other ones. I've just recently started working with Java a little bit. It is the first programming language I've used (other than picking at QBasic way back when, just messing around as a kid). But now I'm extremely interested in programming and was hoping some of you would be able to help me get started. Pointers, tips, suggestions? How did you all get started? Any good tutorials online that could help me? Good book suggestions? Basically, where should I start? Thanks, again, for all of your help!!!

Any good tutorials online that could help me?http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/
Basically, where should I start?Well, most of us probably started by taking classes at school and by doing assignments. If you are doing this on you own then you will need to read and create your own assignments. One way to do this is to find a topic that interests you and then attempt to answer questions in this forum on that topic.
For example, I was interested in learning how Swing worked, so I read the Swing tutorial from the link given above. Then, to test my knowledge, I tried answering questions on the Swing forum. If I didn't know the answer outright then I would read the API some more, or search the forum to see if the question has been asked before. The more questions I answer, and the more answers I see from other people help me to increase my knowledge. Slowly I increased my knowledgw and have now fooled some people into thinking that I actually know something about Swing.

  • Looking for some info before deciding to install

Normally, I would try to some searching before posting, but I've been pressed for time lately. Anyways, I'm looking for some info about Solaris before deciding to dive into installing it.
    1) Can it be installed on what's a currently triple-booting system without problems? In this case, Solaris would be installed onto half of the slave HD.
    2) How difficult and lengthy is the installation process?
    3) Does Solaris come with it's own unique bootloader? Can it recognize other operating systems? Is it possible to not install that bootloader and simply edit the configs for a preexisting GRUB to allow it to boot Solaris?

The only way to get content into the Music app is via iTunes store downloads or syncing with itunes on a computer. You will need to find a third party media player such as VLC (whick integrates with DropBox and GoogleDrive, if that appeals to you).

  • Looking for some info, Creative is not much help.

Looking for some info, Creative is not much help. Ok, right now I have an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum. It can use the digital inputs to decode either Dolby Digital, DD EX, DTS, and DTS ES to the analog speaker outputs. (Also a 5. setup.)
I recently built a new PC, and would like to replace the sound card, but I use that feature (as well as some others). Seeing how Creative doesn't want to easily display the capabilities of there cards, I would like someone to let me know what card will allow the fallowing in Windows XP, Vista, and theoretically Windows 7.
Hardware decoding of Dolby Digital, DD EX, DTS, and DTS ES and allow a proper 5. playback through analog speakers.
Recording of whatever is playing out of the the speakers. The recording selection is labeled "What U Hear")
The reasons behind me wanting to buy a new card are simply that I would prefer to run it through PCI-Express, and have full compatibility at the release of Windows 7 without any loss of features I need. From what I can tell, if things work in Windows Vista they will work in [email protected]

All I can say to you (someone correct me if I'm wrong) is that Xtremegamer's doesn't decode DD/DTS via hardware with official drivers (altough they're capable of - all X-Fi are capable of decoding). XtremeMusic does the job with official drivers. I don't know the rest of the models. Someone adds [email protected]

  • Looking for some info on how to play music files on IPAD2

Hi and thanks for sharing.  Trying to figure out how to play sound files such as wavs or mp3s on my ipad2 while I browse the internet or use my computer.  I was trying to see if the music feature will play my songs or if I can import downloaded files from the net to itunes and if that will play in the background.  I have an audio program that can send sound files to email and was trying to figure out how, similarly, to get this play in the background while I do things too.  That and sound files downloaded from the internet.   Do these go to iCloud when you download them?  Can I import sounds into itunes with my iPad someway.  (It's the only computer or device I own).   Basically looking for a pathway to get music from my audio program that's sent to email, and clips I've DLed off sites on the internet, to play while I use the pad or browse the net.  Thanks for your intel on the mission.   Cheers!

If anyone can help me, that would be hugely appreciated!

I have the same issue now after downgrading my Flash plugin. I downgraded from 10 to 9 latest because I like using Camino and for some reason Flash 10 doesn't play nice with Camino. But all of a sudden as I use Camino 2b2 for everyday and Safari 3.2 for banking and such, the browser hangs requiring a forced quit when I close it. I've re-installed the browser twice now with all the previous folders, and preferences erased and caches emptied. I even when to re-installing 10.5.6 and it still crashes, it's odd. Maybe 10.5.7 will address this.

  • Just looking for some advice at this stage

Hello all, been a while since I posted here... That's cause it's been a while since I've upgraded :D
Anyway, I'm just planning my build now and I want to check up on a few things... I'm going Conroe obviously (E6600) but I'm not decided on which flavour of board I'll go for just yet. Depending on what AMD/ATi pull out of the bag it'll either be the 975X or a P6N SLI (in some form or other). At this point three things are on my mind:
    1. I want to go for 4Gb of (matched) RAM on two sticks... anything I need to be aware of regarding 2Gb module compatibility? Any makes to avoid (OCZ seem to be unpopular in that regard).
    2. I'd like to move to a SATA optical drive, and issues there? Makes to avoid etc. especially in the case of the 975X as the tested hardware list only seems to include PATA drives.
    3. What the recommended Amperage on the 12V line these days? I'm currently looking at the 620W Corsair PSU as a safe bet, other recommendations are welcome though.
Thanks for any advice/opinions offered in advance... hopefully with a bit more info this time I'll be able to avoid trouble shooting posts :D
    Gift.

Right so I've done it, two PCs at the spec posted in my sig...
They seem to be working fine, nice and stable but a few little niggles I'd like to sort:
    1. Updating the Mobo drivers, live update doesn't seem to like Vista so should I just DL the ones on the mobo main page?
    2. Vista seems to behave strangely when it greys out the screen to indicate a UAC box needs attention. It fades in ok on both PCs but seems to flicker off once I'm done with the box in a way that seems to render the graphics weirdly. I wouldn't go so far to describe it as graphical corruption more like a kind of rendering lag... Anyone else noticed this, I've an idea uptodate mobo/gfx drivers might be the problem (I've just gone with the stuff vista DL'ed installed, for me) but otherwise all good games run stably so far (touch wood).
I'm off for a night of installing software :D Deep joy.
    Gift.
PS sorry this was late, parts got delayed in the post :D And I had no probs with my RAM if peeps are interested.

  • Just looking for some advice for a Networking 'noob'

    Hey folks,
I manage the post-production workflow for a small agency. We're getting ready to move into a new office space, and we'll be looking to make some upgrades to our video workflow and data management.
At the current time, we have two G5s (PowerPCs) and a new Intel Mac Pro. We may be adding a fourth (or even fifth) workstation. We shoot everything on the DVX (24p DV), but we're also (strongly) considering upgrading to an HD workflow and investing in a few HVX packages so we can have the option of shooting 720p. We will NOT be shooting anything higher than that, (no uncompressed, digibeta, no 1080p, etc.)
Right now, when we need to access media from other computers, we simply use the AppleTalk feature of our internal ethernet and mount the drives remotely. This actually works fairly well, and we usually don't have any issues with latency. But it becomes frustrating at times when we want to search for a particular media file or FCP project file and we can't remember which drive it was stored on. We'd like to have all of our editing workstations be able to access the same media simultaneously in one shared 'Mother Ship.'
I guess my question is: What should we get? Final Cut Server? G-Raid? Xsan?
I'm not really an IT guy, so I can't say I really know the differences between these different options, but any advice you can offer would be most appreciated.
And as for budget, we're prob looking to spend something in the range of $8,000-$10,000 dollars on this new system. (that's NOT including the HVXs, of course.

Ok... here we go, not sure what you are doing except editing DV right now,
but this will work for HDV, DVCPROHD, Uncompressed SD and some ProRes
as long as you have a good Gigabit Router to transfer files. Please consult
a professional if this sounds scary to you.
*Redundant FILE SERVER* for project files, important stuff
    1. Install at least 4GB RAM in G5 #1 (max $200)
    3. Make sure there are two identical SATA drives in the G5. Install OSX Leopard Server ($499) on 1 drive. Use Carbon Copy Cloner (Free... http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html) and clone
the main drive to SATA drive #2 when drive #1 is set up completely. Use drive #2 as backup.
    4. Connect CalDigit 2.56TB HDOne External Hard Drive Array (RAID-5) with PCI-X adapter ($2830)
    SubTotal: $3600...ish
*Current MacPro* Add unprotected scratch disk for main edit suite
    1. Install Sonnet Tempo SATA e4p Serial ATA Host Adapter ($260)

If you want to organize things, then FCS will help. You can install
on G5#2 for 999.00 more. I would focus on hardware first though.

  • Newmac user looking for some info

    Hi everyone,
Just ordered an ibook(12 in - the only one my budget would allow at the moment) on Monday and it should be here soon hopefully ..fingers crossed. It is in shanghai right now...
Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had a list of favourite must have programs for it.
I will be networking with my desktop pc that is running windows xp ..
Also will be using my palm with it as well which application is better palm desktop or the other sync program?
If all goes well and we like it( I know I will- my other half might not) we are going to get ourselves a desktop one as well next year.
Does anyone have any tricks or hints to share?
    Looking forward to your replies..

I can't speak to the Palm question, but my list of "must have" programs includes -
SuperDuper! - a great easy to use program for cloning your hard drive to make an external FireWire drive bootable. This is essential for recovering from system problems and good overeall protection. $19.95.
Cocktail - a brilliant front end for running all sorts of maintenance tasks that would normally have you using Terminal. It is very easy to use and very useful. $14.95.
I also use a couple of programs to keep tabs on system health -
Temperature Monitor puts the CPU temp right in the menu bar so you will always know where you stand. Free.
MenuMeters puts a whole set of reading in the menu bar like CPU usage, network activity, memory usage, and hard drive activity. Free.
X Resource Graph puts a few more things on a running graph like fan speeds. It pretty much duplicates Menu Meters and Temperature Monitor, but in a nice graphical display that is not on the menu bar. Free.
For more advanced data recovery and repair, lots of users swear by Disk Warrior. I have yet to need it, but I plan on purchasing it soon.
I have no affiliation with any of these companies. I am just a happy user of them.

  • Looking for some info?

Hello, i am currently an art student who is looking to use java for an installation project. I was hoping that someone could send me in the right direction for either source code or help. I do have knowledge in Java however the project i believe is above my skill.
For the java i need be able to start the program use a timer to count how long someone has been there. Then once they are finished i need a print out of an array of things that happened since they were there. For example if a baby is born every 5 seconds, and the person used the program for 15 seconds, then i need to print out to them that 3 babies were born. Any help would be appreciated thank you!

  • Looking for some suggestions

Hello, Just looking for some web developers/designer's to give some suggestions on window managers that may be suited to your profession more so than others, maybe highlight the pro's/con's if you could. I guess what I am really trying to decipher is which window manager is best suited for a web developer/designer, there seems to be a wealth of options to choose from. Thanks

    Big brother is watching you
But /dev/zero is correct, these type of threads usually devolve into endless opinions, flame wars, along with a pinch of trolling, and some company usually gets slandered.
I've read the script -- in the end, it comes down to just try them until you find the tools you like.
ah sorry, my intention was never to start a silly flame war. I am going to spend some time trying out tiling WM's other than Xmonad, It's kind of annoying since I'm forced to use win7 at work, and the contrast between work->home is quite large.
If you like tiling, try the "plug.n" autohotkey script/app on your work windows box. Does a very good job - or at least as good as is possible.
There is a limitation if you need to use stuff like VMs. But this is getting a bit OT, so i'll leave it at that .

  • Looking for some helpful advice for a website idea I have

    Hello,
For the past year, my company has had a contract for a tech device manufacturer to maintain a project benchmarking the prices, specs, user features, etc. of their products against their major competitiors. It is quite an in-depth comparison and contains more than 100 products. It is up to date with new product releases and will continue to remain current on the newest products. Anyway, the contract is almost up and I am thinking that the project could be more lucrative if I created a website with all the information I have gathered over the past year. My problem is that I have never created a website for profit. I have created a personal website and my company's website using a combination of CS5 DW, FW, and Flash. I know some html, php, mySQL, and flash, and am fairly comfortable with the CS5 software in general.
Like I mentioned, I am new to trying to make money off a website, but here are two potential ways I have though of to to do so:
    1. Just throw all the information on the websites and offer access to all users for free and hope to gain advertising revenue from the manufacturers who have their products on my site.
    or
    2. Offer a sample of basic info on all of the products, but require a subscription for full access (maybe $199/year).
My target market will consist of the manufacturers themselves, IT professionals, and resellers of these products.
Im also wondering if I should make it Flash-based and very visually appealing or just in html.
I guess i'm just looking for an opinion on which path to choose and any advice in making this effort successful.
    Thanks in advance!!
    -Dave

I'd make sure to read the contract and any associated fine print really, really carefully before doing this. But back to your question - this is more of a marketing question and I'd suggest hiring a good marketer (or become one) to make the most of this opportunity.
And how do you find a good marketer?
I'd suggest using Seth Godin (http://sethgodin.typepad.com/) as your guide/model. If the person you want to hire knows and follows Seth's good marketing advice, you'll likely do very well. If they don't know who Seth Godin is and are obsessed with SEO rankings and email blasts, I'd be very worried (that's not to say SEO rankings and email blasts are "wrong" but that they shouldn't be the only options in your marketing approach).
    Good luck!

Any suggestions on where to start with this?

in order to access the router remotely , you need to enable remote management on the router and to access the terminals using VNC .. you need to open the ports used by VNC ..

  • Looking for some advice.

Hi. Hope this is right forum. First post. A brief background. Years ago (2007-2008) I created a web portfolio for school. First it was in HTML (Dreamweaver) and then Flash. I hadn't really touched it in years and decided this past couple of months, after playing in the medium again, to get back into wed design, 3d, and digital content creation. That said, I went in and updated both the HTML and Flash versions with the knowledge I currently have, limited though it is. I now would like to go forward and build a completely new site and teach myself HTML, JavaScript, and WebGL along the way (possibly before hand). Hopefully I'll get working on the new site before the end of the year. In the mean time, I'm using my old site as a stop-gap measure. I've also taken books out from the library to begin journey into the above mentioned languages.
This all said, I'm looking for some advice on what direction I should go next...look into... Does my current objective seem reasonable? Also, could anyone give feedback on what I did wrong and what I've done right on my old site. I think, as far as what went wrong, the Flash page is just too large. No one wants to wait so long for it to load. I think I got carried away with it. Also, too many sound effects. That said, I think the HTML site was constructed in an "old-fashion" way. No one makes sites like that anymore. I basically set it up in Photoshop, sliced it, and assembled it in Dreamweaver. The end result is a bunch of tables in HTML? A friend suggested I look into a CMS (?) like WordPress?
    Here's my current site: http://www.personal.kent.edu/~mstingle/
Constructive feedback on what I did right and wrong would be great. And, where I should be looking next for rebuild of my portfolio.
    Cheers.

WebGL is still  experimental.  Most browsers don't fully support it yet.
    http://caniuse.com/webgl
The current trend is Responsive Web Design -- layouts that work in all devices (mobile, tablet and desktop).  This technology relies on CSS layouts (no tables) with media queries for different viewport widths.  Below is a crude example built with the FluidGrid Layouts feature in DW CS6 or CC:
http://alt-web.com/FluidGrid/Fluid2.html  -- resize your browser's viewport to see it in action.
Flash is dead on the web now because the world's most popular mobile & tablet devices don't support it.  Animations are mostly being built with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript.  See Adobe Edge Animate.
If you're not a skilled coder and just want a basic static web site, Adobe Muse might be all you need.  http://www.adobe.com/products/muse.html   That said, Muse cannot support server-side programming so you can't use it for advanced features like CMSs, blogs, etc...
If you're a Creative Cloud member, you can use Behance & ProSite to build & share your portfolio online.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/creativecloud/behance-community.html
    http://prosite.com/
In terms of your own site, ask yourself how much content & which features it will need to support in the coming months/years.  If it's going to be a relatively small site (under 20 pages), a static HTML site is probably all you need.  IMO, WordPress -- a dynamic CMS built with PHP & MySql databases -- would be overkill.  However, if you plan to make your site into a  blog for example, then a dynamic CMS is an option to consider.  WordPress isn't the only kid on the block either.  There's also Drupal, Joomla!, and many more...

  • Looking for some advice on what to do about

    So I have a macbook pro - late 2007 model I guess
    2.16 core duo(just before the core 2 duo's i guess)
    2gig's ram
    ATY,RadeonX1600 256mb
My problem itself is in 3 parts
1.) My battery fried late 2008(have it running off the adapter since) and I was wondering if my model will fit with the 2008 model batteries? If so do you know how much it would cost(cdn dollars if possible)
2.) My video card is from what I believe to be ruined/terrible shape. I've been using SMC fan control for awhile to sway the overheating, and it helps but I believe the damage was already done while I did not have it active while using my computer for games and other various things(MBP's seem to run insanely hot?)
I will be calling the apple store i bought it from tomorrow but I was looking for some advice on any type of diagnostic tests I might be able to do to test my video card as well how much would it cost to replace(assuming you can't upgrade much in a laptop)
3.) Wondering your opinion on the overall value of the computer with the replacements/without.
It appears to run perfectly fine though sometimes when program's open up I start to see tearing and pixel's looking crazy all over my screen(assuming a fried video card)

You can buy the battery design for any old MacBook Pro models (not the unibody). MacBook Pro from the first to the last generation uses the same battery. It cost $129 (not sure how much it cost in Canadian but probably a $20-$30 premium). As for your graphics card, Apple has a one price model for all hardware repairs ($310 or something around there and converted to Canadian probably around $350 to $360). I think you should get it replaced. The only test that I can think of is to re-install the OS and see if the problem occurs, if it does then its most likely a hardware issue. There is no standard test that's widely available. With the replacement I think the computer values in the range of $1800 to $1500) and without the repair I would say about $1350 to $1000 at best.
