Best practice metadata export/import  for WebCenter portal

Hi
I'm using JDeveloper to build the WebCenter portal. When I let's say register a portlet producer along with my portal, the information about it is stored in the metadata. In case I want to move my portal from the integrated WLS which JDeveloper provides to another WebLogic server with WebCenter installation - steps which I need to do are:
1) Export the metadata from JDeveloper
2) Import metadata to my target Weblogic server
3) deploy the application
Am I missing something?
To export/import metadata from JDeveloper to another Weblogic (equipped with WebCenter) server I should use the WLST script, right?
Thanks

A little correction: IAS Version is Oracle9i Application Server Release 1 version 1.0.2.2.2

Metadata export/import to other BI tools?
    Hi ,
I am using SQL DM 3.0.0.665. I need your thoughs on following.
As we build our logical/physical models in SQL data Modeler, we create our metadata for our attributes/columns.
After creating our physical model, other BI and reporting tools acquire access to the physical tables. Each tool has a process of creating their reporting layer and able to bring the tables/columns into reporting layer. It shows the column names as it is. It is not business friendly.
Do we have a mechanism to export attribute business names as meta data of DB tables?
If we define the meta data as part of physical model using modeling tools such as Oracle SQL Developer or ERWIN, will we able to import those into BI tools as report elements meta data?
    Where can I find details?
    How do we do that?
    Thanks in helping us out.

    Hi,
there is no problem if you are building reports on top of our reporting repository - table DMRS_MAPPINGS holds information for pairs - (entity- table), (attribute-column)...., and you can take implementation and business name.
Exchange to BI tools - you need to know how particular BI tool can recognize and link implementation and business names and then you can use transformation script in order to provide required information. There are examples on this forum how to deal with files and database connection using transformation script.

  • Best practice to define length for varchar field of table in sql server

What is best practice to define length for a varchar field in table
where field suppose Remarks By Person  varchar(max) or varchar(4000)
Could it affect on optimization in future????
    experts Reply Must ...
    Dilip Patil..

    Hi Dilip,
Varchar(n/max) is a variable-length, non-unicode character data. N defines the string length and can be a value from 1 through 8,000. Max indicates that the maximum storage size is 2^31-1 bytes (2 GB). The storage size is the actual length of the data entered
+ 2 bytes. We always use varchar when the sizes of the column data entries vary considerably. While if the filed data size might exceed 8,000 bytes in some way, we should use varchar(max).
So the conclusion is just like Uri said, use varchar(max) or varchar(4000) is depends on how much characters we are going to store.

  • Best practices to reduce downtime for Database releases(rolling changes)

    Hi,
What are best practices to reduce downtime for database releases on 10.2.0.3? What DB changes can be rolling and what can't?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    RJiv.

I would be very dubious about any sort of universal "best practices" here. Realistically, your practices need to be tailored to the application and the environment.
You can invest a lot of time, energy, and resources into minimizing downtime if that is the only goal. But you'll generally pay for that goal in terms of developer and admin time and effort, environmental complexity, etc. And you generally need to architect your application with rolling upgrades in mind, which necessitates potentially large amounts of redesign to existing applications. It may be perfectly acceptable to go full-bore into minimizing downtime if you are running Amazon.com and any downtime is unacceptable. Most organizations, however, need to balance downtime against other needs.
For example, you could radically minimize downtime by having a second active database, configuring Streams to replicate changes between the two master databases, and configure the middle tier environment so that you can point different middle tier servers against one or the other database. When you want to upgrade, you point all the middle tier servers against database A other than 1 that lives on a special URL. You upgrade database B (making sure to deal with the Streams replication environment properly depending on requirements) and do the smoke test against the special URL. When you determine that everything works, you configure all the app servers to point at B and have Streams replication process configured to replicate changes from the old data model to the new data model), upgrade B, repeat the smoke test, and then return the middle tier environment to the normal state of balancing between databases.
This lets you upgrade with 0 downtime. But you've got to license another primary database. And configure Streams. And write the replication code to propagate the changes on B during the time you're smoke testing A. And you need the middle tier infrastructure in place. And you're obviously going to be involving more admins than you would for a simpler deploy where you take things down, reboot, and bring things up. The test plan becomes more complicated as well since you need to practice this sort of thing in lower environments.

The recommended way is to export the User Manager configuration template out (using the AdminUI), import it into your new enviroment (again using the AdminUI - you have to type the password of the LDAP user in since it is not exported) and then initiating an LDAP Synch.

  • Best Practices: iPad/MacBookPro synching for video production in education

My organization just bought 14 Macbook Pros and 14 iPads Minis. Our goal is to have students in single-day classes use the iPads to film something, then synch/export the video to a MacBook Pro where they can then edit that video in iMovies. Once that single-day class is over, all of the video will (likely) be deleted and new students come in a couple days later and start fresh. I'm trying to figure out the best practices for this to make it as painless as possible for all involved.
So, matching AppleIDs for each pair? One AppleID for all devices and manual synch through iTunes? Dropbox/cloud synching instead of iTunes?
All of these devices are brand new. I have already started prepping the MacBook Pros, but have not even turned on the iPads since I'm not sure which AppleID I should attach to the iPads -- I assume the first AppleID on an iPad will accept the iLife apps much the same way they do on the MacBook Pros.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

well the most important fact to accept is that ALL DRIVES WILL FAIL.  It's just a matter of when.  I can tell you about a nightmare situation with g-drives (before Hitachi bought them).   What format are you shooting?  If you shoot on tape, you can always recapture as long as you captured with abort clips on dropped frames on make new clip on timecode break are enabled.  But that's gonna take "real time."  If you shot on a chip based format, backing up the chips in multiple places (and I mean multiple) can provide a sense of security.  But if you need to be able to get back to work immediately if you have a drive fail, having a back up of your media or if you've stored it on a redundant raid is crucial.  I also seriously recommended having a clone of your startup drive so if your startup (boot) drive fails, you can get back to work quickly.

  • IPhoto 11: Best practice to export a slideshow

    Hi all,
after reading some posts on this matter I'm almost more confused than beginning so I hope someone can help me with "latest" best practices.
Hi have iPhoto 11 and normally I'm making slideshows for watching on HD TV.
For DVD burning I'm using  Toast 11 (instead of iDVD).
Then, considering that converting in DVD I'll loose in quality, which are the best export parameters I should use ?
I've been suggested to use (I may have transalted something wrongly as I'm using the Italian version):
    Export -> Personal Setting
Keeping "Export for Quick Time usage" -> Options
    Under Video tab:
    Compression: H.264
Speed Frequency: 25 (for PAL) with Automatic below
    Compressor Quality: Max
    Codify: Quick (single)
    Under Dimension tab:
    Dimension: 1920x1080 HD
Thanks in advance for your advice here.
    Regards
    Giancarlo

OK, so let me repeat just to be sure I understood well.
Could you confirm that all parameters I'm using are OK but dimensions?
    About dimensions:
    a. use 720x526 when I'm burning a standard DVD for 4:3
    b. use 1024x576 when I'm burning a standard DVD for 16:9 .... is this feasible or just a. is available ?
    c. use 1280x720 or 1920x1080 when I'm burning a BR (for HD watching)
    Am I right ?

  • Best way to Export/Import Workspace/Applications

    Hello Gurus,
I am moving servers and wanted to know the best way to Move Workspaces/applications.
    I am on 10G R2 and Application Express 3.0.1.
I have created a database on the new server.
Installed http server. Installed Application Express.
I can get into application express using the admin password.
On the database side I have 3 tablespaces and 3 Oracle schemas.
On the Application Express side I have 3 workspaces that are linked to
    the 3 Oracle Schemas.
I imported (Oracles Import) one of the Schemas.
If I get into Application Express and try to import the Workspace it gives
me an error'Workspace will not be created because it already exists.'
Will importing a workspace import all the applications in the workspace.
    Dhiren

Did you export the workspace to a file and then try to import it when you got that message? What is the name of the workspace? I don't know why you would get that error in a newly installed Application Express unless you tried to manually create a workspace with that name somehow before you tried the import.
Anyway, you might want to re-install and start over by (1) exporting each workspace to a file, (2) importing each workspace from those files into the new instance, and (3) do the same export/import cycle for each application from old to new instances, for each workspace. Workspace export/import does not include applications or anything except the workspace name, the schema list, and the user accounts. You may want to export/import css, static files, images, UI defaults, and themes too, if you want to carry those over.

  • Best way to export data for a migration

    Hi Oracle Community,
What's the best way to export data from an Oracle 8i database for it to be suitable for import into an Oracle 10g database?
What's the best way to export data if it is to go into different rdbms database?
    Thanks, David

Thanks everyone for all your help. You guys are great.
There seems to be many good ways to export your data from Oracle into a flat file format, suitable for import into other RDBS': Oracle, mysql, postgresql, etc.
A few tools where mentioned but using SQL*Plus, which comes with Oracle (And SQL*LDR on the backend, which also comes with Oracle) seem the most straight forward.
I found this script on asktom.oracle.com to work great, slightly modified here,
(to Include linesize max, and pipes rather than commas):
set echo off newpage 0 space 0 pagesize 0 feed off head off trimspool on
    set linesize 32767
    spool payment.txt
    select
    PAYMENT_ID||'|'||
    USER_ID||'|'||
    <more fields her>
    from
    payment
    spool off
    exit ;
It works great. Rather than making one of these for each table I wrote an perl script called ora_export. http://crowfly.net/oracle/ora_export. It runs in Unix and only requires SQL*PLUS. It creates these four files:
<tablename>.def # list of table columns and types (SQL*Plus DESC)
<tablename>_dump.sql  # a script to export the data
    <tablename>.psv # THE DATA (eq. - name|address|etc)
<tablename>_load.ctl  # SQL*LDR control for ORCL if you need it.

  • Best Practices or Project Template for Rep/Version

I have installed the Repository 6i (3) and created the users successfully, even though it has taken a lot of effort to make sure each step is correct.
However, on setting up the workareas and importing the project files, I have been trying back and force to figure out where things go, and who has what access.
Is there something like a best practice or a project template for setting up a basic repository/version control system, that provides
    1. the repository structure,
    2. corresponding file system structure (for different developers, build manager, etc)
    3. access grants, and
    4. work scenarios, etc.
The Technet demos and white papaers are either too high-level (basic), or too individual function oriented. I can't get a clear picture of the whole thing, since there are so many concepts and elements that don't easily go together.
Considering that I am a decent DBA and developer, it has taken me 2 weeks, and I am still not ready to sign up other developers to use this thing. How do you expect any small development teams to ever use it? It's one thing to design it to be scalable and all-possible, it's another to make it easily usable. I have been suggested to use MS VSS. The only reason I am still trying Ora-Rep is its promise to directly support Designer and Oracle objects.

    Andy,
I have worked extensively with the Repository over the last year and a half. I have collected some of my experiences and the derived guidelines on using the Repository in real life in a number of papers that I will be presenting at ODTUG 2001, next week in San Diego. If you happen to be there (see www.odtug.com), come and see me and we could talk through your specific situation. If you are not and you are interested in those papers, drop me an Email and I could send them to you (they probably will also become available on OTN right after the ODTUG conference).

  • Best practices on using OLM for sign-off on compliance policies?

We are working on a project to build a parent/child learning object that will include four compliance policies and a "test" to sign off acceptance of these policies as a condition of employment. Has anyone implemented something like this? If so - can you please share some best practices around this type of implementation. Our plan is to build a learning certification.
We are also interesting in looking into how to automate the assignment of the learning certification to all new hires. Any info here would also be appreciated.
    Thanks - Juli

We use 11.5.10j...One thing I would recommend is creating an introductory module as child object to the certification, and a concluding module as child object as well.
In the learning objects I have done where a parent/child relationship exists, the introductory module is important for several reasons, including instructing learners about how to expand the OLM Player outline on the left to move to the next module (in 11.5.10j, at least, it doesn't expand automatically so the general population is not going to understand they need to expand and move to the next module. You might try to tell people to do that independently of the course but we've found it's best to put as part of the course.) The introductory module also includes things like objectives, expected duration, completion requirements, audience, etc.
As for the concluding module, I include a concluding module to instruct people that they have reached the end and provide a screenshot of the OLM Player "Home" button to instruct them to return to the OLM home page. Using the OLM "Home" button circumvents issues with popup blockers suppressing the passing of completion information back to OLM when exiting using the IE exit button and is generally a cleaner way to exit the course. Again, instructions might be provided independent of the learning object but most will not pay attention to those. There is a patch to test for the presence of popup blockers and alert the user so that there might be less need for a concluding module to do this but we have not been able to implement this yet due to problems caused after it was applied.

    Pinal

    Dear All,
I have got few LSMWs created in my Dev System and also in SND systems.
Earlier I used the Export-Import mechanism for moving them to Q & P.
However I am facing issues now.
When I try to export the LSMW it opens me windows dialog box with C: drive but instead of showing me Save button,it shows me open button for click.
When I press that it does not do anything. If I select some other location and click this open button LSMW gets exported in file with the message mapping and rules exported successfully..
Now when I try to import the LSMW in another server, it does not import it & gives me error 'No importable information can be found in the file.'
Am I missing anything here ?
I have already done import export successfully couple of times in the past but why I am getting this error ?
Also, why cant I see Save button while exporting to hard drive and why it does not get exported to C: drive which appears default ?
    Request you to suggest please.
