Best practices for translating FrameMaker content?

I'm interested in learning from Adobe or experienced users about best practices to follow (or references worth reading) about translating FrameMaker publications.

Haven't done this for a while, but I believe the first recommendation used to be "work with a reputable translation agency who will accept, translate and return .mif files." fwiw, I still remember a run-in with one agency that claimed they did but didn't … they passed our .mif files on to translators who used Word =8-} The result in our case was that all the autonumbering in a long, complex regulatory document failed, because Word had slipped a fine-space character in before every colon in the French translation.
A separate issue is whether it's worth moving to structured Frame, which is said to make translation management easier as your document evolves.
There'll be lots of people who can give you more complete, more up-to-date answers, though.

  • Best practice for multi-language content in common areas

    I've got a site with some text in header/footer/nav that needs to be translated between an English and Spanish site, which use the same design. My intention was to set up all the text as content to facilitate. However, if I use a standard dialog with the component's path set to a child of the current page node, I would need to re-enter the text on every page. If I use a design dialog, or a standard dialog with the component's path set absolutely, the Engilsh and Spanish sites will share the same text. If I use a standard dialog with the component's path set relatively (eg path="../../jcr:content/myPath"), the pages using the component would all need to be at the same level of the hierarchy.
    It appears that the Geometrixx demo doesn't address this situation, and leaves copy in English. Is there a best practice for this scenario?

    I'm finding that something to the effect of <cq:include path="<%= strCommonContentPath + "codeEntry" %>" resourceType ...
    works fine for most components, but not for parsys, or a component containing a parsys. When I attempt that, I get a JS error that says "design.path is null or not an object". Is there a way around this?

  • Tips and best practices for translating C into LabVIEW? SERIOUS newbie...

    I need to translate a C function into LabVIEW.  This will be my *first* LabVIEW project.  I've been reading some tutorials, and I'm still struggling to get my brain out of "C/C++ mode" and learn the LabVIEW paradigms.
    Structurally, the function that I need to translate gets called from a while-loop and performs a bunch of mathematical calculations.
    The basic layout is something like this (this obviously isn't the actual code, it just illustrates the general flow control and techniques that it uses).
    struct Params
    // About 20 int and float parameters
    int CalculateMetrics(Params *pParams,
    float input1, float input2 [etc])
    int errorCode = 0;
    float metric1;
    float metric2;
    float metric3;
    // Do some math like:
    metric1 = input1 * (pParams->someParam - 5);
    metric2 = metric1 + (input2 / pParams->someOtherParam);
    // Tons more simple math
    // A couple for-loops
    if (metric1 < metric2)
    // manipulate metric1 somehow
    else
    // set some kind of error code
    errorCode = ...;
    if (!errorCode)
    metric3 = metric1 + pow(metric2, 3);
    // More math...
    // etc...
      // update some external global metrics variables
    return errorCode;
    I'm still too green to understand whether or not a function like this can translate cleanly from C to LabVIEW, or whether the LabVIEW version will have significant structural differences.
    Are there any general tips or "best practices" for this kind of task?
    Here are some more specific questions:
    Most of the LabVIEW examples that I've seen (at least at the beginner level) seem to heavily rely on using the front panel controls  to provide inputs to functions.  How do I build a VI where the input arguments(input1, input2, etc) come as numbers, and aren't tied to dials or buttons on the front panel?
    The structure of the C function seems to rely heavily on the use of stack variables like metric1 and metric2 in order to perform calculations.  It seems like creating temporary "stack" variables in LabVIEW is possible, but frowned upon.  Is it possible to keep this general structure in the LabVIEW VI without making the code a mess?
    Thanks guys!

    There's already a couple of good answers, but to add to #1:
    You're clearly looking for a typical C-function. Any VI that doesn't require front panel opening (user interaction) can be such a function.
    If the front panel is never opened the controls are merely used to send data to the VI, much like (identical to) the declaration of a C-function. The indicators can/will be return values.
    Which controls and indicators are used to sending data in and out of a VI is almost too easy; Click the icon of the front panel (top right) and show connector, click which control/indicator goes where. Done. That's your functions declaration.
    Basically one function is one VI, although you might want to split it even further, dont create 3k*3k pixel diagrams.
    Depending on the amount of calculations done in your If-Thens they might be sub vi's of their own.

    You can make it happen by creating a private connection for 40 users by capi script and when creating portlet select 2nd option in Users Logged in section. In this the portlet uses there own private connection every time user logs in.
    So that it won't ask for password.
    Another thing is there is an option of entering password or not in ASC in discoverer section, if your version 10.1.2.2. Let me know if you need more information

  • Best practice for Admin viewing contents of network homes

    How are you viewing the contents of your users' network home directories in the gui?
    Is there a better way than logging in locally as root? I'd like to do this over AFP if possible.
    Can I make an HomeAdmins group and propogate that group to have read access to all users' home folders? How about for new homes that are subsequently created?
    Thanks,
    b.

    You probably know this already, but:
    1. Nothing bad should happen if you change the group owner of your home directories unless you're using the current group ownership for something important.
    2. If you set the setgid bit on the root directory of the sharepoint and it is owned by the admin group then new folders created within should have the group owner you want. There are various ways to ensure the home directories would have the proper permissions.

  • Best Practices for importing FrameMaker books into RoboHelp?

    We are getting ready to purchase RobHelp, and I'm trying to get a head start on the conversion.  We have ~600 base FrameMaker (v7) files that are pieced together to create ~11 different manuals.  I've got a couple of simpler books picked out for testing purposes, but if there's a white paper or anyting on the subject floating about, I would appreciate it.

    I've tried to use RH8 to produce HTML help from a FM9 book. I found that it mostly worked as advertised, with the exception of automatic TOC generation from a book TOC (which can be worked around) and disappearing HTML tags when conditional text is used (no work around found yet). I've posted about both of these issues in this forum, and while many have read my posts, no-one has yet acknowledged that they have seen similar problems or pointed out incorrect usage on my part. So I might just be mad (or furious, depending).
    Before purchasing and committing to an approach, I recommend that you use the 30 day eval to thoroughly exercise these products and see if they work as advertised for you. If you need more than FM9 and RH8 (which can be downloaded as full-featured trials), then you can get a DVD of a 30 day trial of TCS2 from Adobe. I ordered the DVD and it arrived in about 3-5 days (at least, it did for me, and I'm in the USA).

  • Best practice for sharing html content on different group spaces?

    How can html content be shared between several group spaces?
    One way I have found is to add a html doc to ucm and then to add this doc as a iframe to a page.
    Are there other ways, like adding on one group space page a html layout element and then to view this content in a different space. How could this be done, with an expression language reference?
    Has someone experience in presenting the same html content on different spaces and can share how he does it. Any ideas are welcome.

    Hey Max,
    Check out our technical whitepaper on Integrating ECM with Portal Technologies.
    Our "Fishbowl Portlets" allow you to share any content - HTML, WYSIWYG user generated content, documents etc - in multiple contexts (portlets, web apps, etc).
    This is one of the things that we showcased as the recent Collaborate conference in Vegas - WebCenter framework, UCM and the portlets surfacing the same items in different contexts - all personalization aware, configurable and end user/super user editable.

  • What is the best practice for creating master pages and styles with translated text?

    I format translated text all the time for my company. I want to create a set of master pages and styles for each language and then import those styles into future translated documents. That way, the formatting can be done quickly and easily.
    What are the best practices for doing this? As a company this has been tried in the past, but without success. I'd like to know what other people are doing in this regard.
    Thank you!

    I create a master template that is usually void of content, with the exception I define as many of the paragraph styles I believe can/will be used with examples of their use in the body of the document--a style guide for that client. When beginning a new document for that client, I import those styles from the paragraph styles panel.
    Exception to this is when in a rush I begin documentation first, then begin new work. Then in the new work, I still pull in those defined paragraph and or object styles via their panels into the new work.
    There are times I need new styles. If they have broader applicability than a one-off instance or publication, then I open the style template for that client and import that style(s) from the publication containing the new style(s) and create example paragraphs and usage instructions.
    Take care, Mike

  • Best Practice for trimming content in Sharepoint Hosted Apps?

    Hey there,
    I'm developing a Sharepoint 2013 App that is set to be Sharepoint Hosted.  I have a section within the app that I'd like to be Configuration-related, so I would like to only allow certain users or roles to be able to access this content or even see
    that it exists (i.e. an Admin button, if you will).  What is the best practice for accomplishing this in Sharepoint 2013 Apps?  Thusfar, I've been doing everything using jQuery and the REST api and I'm hoping there's a standard within this that I
    should be using.
    Thanks in advance to anyone who can weigh in here.
    Mike

    Hi,
    According to
    this documentation, “You must configure a new name in Domain Name Services (DNS) to host the apps. To help improve security, the domain name should not be a subdomain
    of the domain that hosts the SharePoint sites. For example, if the SharePoint sites are at Contoso.com, consider ContosoApps.com instead of App.Contoso.com as the domain name”.
    More information:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/fp161237(v=office.15)
    For production hosting scenarios, you would still have to create a DNS routing strategy within your intranet and optionally configure your firewall.
    The link below will show how to create and configure a production environment for apps for SharePoint:

  • Can anyone recommend tips and best practices for FrameMaker-to-RoboHelp migration ?

    Hi. I'm planning a migration from FM (unstructured) to RH. I'd appreciate any tips and best practices for the migration process. (Note that at the moment I plan to import the FM documents into, not link to them from, RH.)
    For example, my current FM files are presently not optimally "chunked", so that autoconverting FM file sections (based on, say, Header 1 paragraph layout) won't always result in an optimal topic set. I'm thinking of going through the FM docs and inserting dummy paragraphs with a tag somethike like "topic_break", placed in more appropriate locations that the existing headers. Then, during import to RH, I'd use the topic_break paragraph to demark the topics. Is this a good technique? Beyond paragraph-based import delineation, do you know of any guidelines for redrafting FM chapter file content into RH topics?
    Also, are there any considerations/gotchas in the areas of text review workflow, multiple authoring, etc. after the migration? (I've not managed an ongoing RH doc project before, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!
    -Kurt
    BTW, the main reason for the migration: Info is presently scattered in various (and way to many) PDF files. There's no global index. I'd like to make a RoboHelp HTML interface (probably WebHelp layout) so it can be a one-stop documentation shop for users.

    Jeff
    Fm may produce better output for your requirements but for many what Rh produces works just fine. My recent finding re Word converting images to JPG before import will mean a better experience for many.
    Once Rh is set up, and it's not difficult, for many its printed documents will do the job. I would say try it and then judge.

  • Best Practices For Household IOS's/Apple IDs

    Greetings:
    I've been searching support for best practices for sharing primarily apps, music and video among multple iOS's/Apple IDs.  If there is a specific article please point me to it.
    Here is my situation:
    We currently have 3 iPads (2-kids, 1-dad) in the household and one iTunes account on a win computer.  I previously had all iPads on single Apple ID/credit card and controlled the kids' downloads thru the Apple ID password that I kept secret.  As the kids have grown older, I found myself constantly entering my password as the kids increased there interest in music/apps/video.  I like this approach because all content was shared...I dislike because I was constantly asked to input password for all downloads.
    So, I recently set up an individual account for them with the allowance feature at iTunes that allows them to download content on their own (I set restrictions on their iPads).  Now I have 3 Apple IDs under one household.
    My questions:
    With the 3 Apple IDs, what is the best way to share apps,music, videos among myself and the kids?  Is it multiple accounts on the computer and some sort of sharing?
    Thanks in advance...

    Hi Bonesaw1962,
    We've had our staff and students run iOS updates OTA via Settings -> Software Update. In the past, we put a DNS block on Apple's update servers to prevent users from updating iOS (like last fall when iOS 7 was first released). By blocking mesu.apple com, the iPads weren't able to check for or install any iOS software updates. We waited until iOS 7.0.3 was released before we removed the block to mesu.apple.com at which point we told users if they wanted to update to iOS 7 they could do so OTA. We used our MDM to run reports periodically to see how many people updated to iOS 7 and how many stayed on iOS 6. As time went on, just about everyone updated on their own.
    If you go this route (depending on the number of devices you have), you may want to take a look at Caching Server 2 to help with the network load https://www.apple.com/osx/server/features/#caching-server . From Apple's website, "When a user on your network downloads new software from Apple, a copy is automatically stored on your server. So the next time other users on your network update or download that same software, they actually access it from inside the network."
    I wish there was a way for MDMs to manage iOS updates, but unfortunately Apple hasn't made this feature available to MDM providers. I've given this feedback to our Apple SE, but haven't heard if it is being considered or not. Keeping fingers crossed.
    Hope this helps. Let us know what you decide on and keep us posted on the progress. Good luck!!

  • Best Practices for Defining NDS Java Projects...

    We are doing a Proof of Concept on using NDS to develop non-SAP Java applications.  We are attempting to determine if we can replace our current Java development tools with NDS/WAS.
    We are struggling with SAP's terminology and "plumbing" for setting up/defining Java projects.  For example, what is and when do you define Tracks, Software Components, Development Components, etc.  All of these terms are totally foreign to us and do not relate to our current Java environment (at least not that we can see).  We are also struggling with how the DTR and activities tie in to those components.
    If any one has defined best practices for setting up Java projects or has struggled with and overcome these same issues, please provide us with some guidance.  This is a very frustrating and time-consuming issue for us.
    Thank you!!

    Hi Peggy,
    In Component Model we divide software projects into small components.Components can use other components in well defined manner.
    A development object is a part of a component that can be changed or developed in some way; it provides the component with a certain part of its functionality. A development object may be a Java class, a Web Dynpro view, a table definition, a JSP page, and so on. Development objects are always stored as “sources” in a repository.
    A development component can be defined as a frame shared by a number of objects, which are part of the software.
    Software components combine components (DCs) to larger units for delivery and deployment.
    A track comprises configurations and runtime systems required for developing software component versions.It ensures stable states of deliverables used by subsequent tracks.
    The Design Time Repository is for versioning source code management. Distributed development of software in teams. Transport and replication of sources.
    You can also find lot of support in SDN for the above concepts with tutorials.

    hi
    we need guidance on best practice for setting up SHARED CALENDAR on Office365 exchange server for entire organization (school)of150 staff.

    + all staff should have read only / reviewer permissions on calendar
    +handful staff should have editor permissions on calendar

    Current Solution
    at the moment we have found that a shared mailbox is the best solution because;
    - allusers can add the shared mailbox on outlook 2010as additional mailbox as readonly
    - all the categories & colors for the calendarare automatically synchronised because the color categories are stored within this mailbox.
    - you can edit calendar permissions in outlook to allow some users as "editor" of the calendar.Problem with Current Solution
    the problem however is that the users also need to access this...

    Hi Aleksei,
    I think Inactive mailboxes in Exchange Online is the feature that you want. This feature makes it possible for you to preserve (store and archive) the contents of deleted mailboxes indefinitely.
    A mailbox becomes inactive when an In-Place Hold or a
    Litigation Hold is placed on the mailbox before the corresponding Office 365 user account is deleted.
    But I'm afraid that it might be impossible to "easily share certain folders or even whole mailbox with people in the company". As can been seen from below articles, this only allows administrators, compliance officers, or records managers
    to use the In-Place eDiscovery feature in Exchange Online to access and search the contents of an inactive mailbox:
