...best selection for compression...

....a 1hour and 43 minute video SD video 4:3. What would be the best compression for formatting to a 3.9 gb file size to go on a 4.7 gb disc. I'm trying to avoid the dual layer set-up. Thanks

Did you try the DVD Best Quality 120 min preset? That's what I would go with, with 103 minutes of video. That should give you enough room for audio and some extras.
If you just want to check how the quality of the encoding gets, just do some test encodings on about 30 seconds of your video (put in/out points in either Compressor or FCP).
If you just want to squeeze your video on to a DVD-5 disc, with the best video quality possible, you should maybe have a look at Mr Bitbuget or Bruce Nazarian's Bit Budget Spreadsheet.
Good luck!

  • What is the best setting for compressing to a Window Media Player?

I now have the latest Compressor, just now need to figure out which is the best setting to use for compressing to a Windows Media Player. Does anyone know which is the best method?

I'd propose you buy a licence for Telestreams FLip4MAC (flipfactory) Quicktime components to enable ENCODING for HD and SD as you need. It works ok however none of my work requires specifics for windows player. I have a licence just the same.
If you have Flip4mac already installed, you can use the system preferneces  panel to order a an ENCODER component licence. There may be others around as well.
You can just use compressor.app and change the inspector video to use "quicktime components/windows media encoder" in the batch job.. its pretty easy.

  • Best quality for compressing data vide file

Hi,I have a 5minute clip which I have been asked to burn on a normal cd as a data file.Whats the best exporting option I can use.should I use compressor? or should I go directly to the quicktime conversion option in final cut?
    thanks

I hope I don't have this worng, but export>quicktime movie will only make a movie based on the currently selected sequence settings. Sure you can make some choices from the drop down menu, but the default is the current sequence setting.
So if this chap were working on a 320x240 video sequence with a horribly lossy compressor, then he'd end up with a pretty rough finished quicktime.
Choosing quicktime conversion does not necessarily compress the footage if you don't select a compression method that will destroy it. You can just as easily not compress it via this method. I would say that using Quicktime Conversion means you really have to know what you are doing so you get all the settings right to match your destination format.

  • Best output for compress in Cleaner or Squeeze

I have a file I am ready to compress for web and CD distribution. I have saved it out several ways (animation being one) but no matter what I do, my files don't look good at all. I've tried several pre-sets for compression and I have been using them recently with excellent results, so I must be doing something wrong in FCE.
I usd to do a lot of this back when FinalCutPro was new, but have been away for several years, so maybe I am forgetting something. Can someone advise as the best way to save the highest quality file out for compression?
    Thanks much!

    Hello Charles,
What is the nature of your source media - NTSC video, stills, graphics, etc.?
What version of FCE are you using?
The animation codec is probably NOT the right choice.
Have you tried exporting to MPEG4 or H.264?
Also, read through some of Ken Stone's articles - here are a few I'd suggest as starters. Even though there are references to Compressor many of the basics can be applied to exporting from FCE -

  • Best Format for compression

I have some very large QT files, about 16-18GB each that I need to put onto a DVD to play in a DVD player. What is the best format to compress them into so that the movie looks good when played on a regular TV and DVD player? I use Compressor so if you are familiar with that and know a good one to use, let me know. Thanks very much.

If possible, something more specific than "the normal 2 hr compression" would be a better help. Which format specifically.
"Normal" depends on your content and and what you intend to do with it. Most DV compressed files are, on the average, between 12 and 13 GBs per hour depending on content. Thus, an 18 GB file would likely be 80-90 minutes in duration. Add a menu or two and any possible incidentals (previews, photos, slideshows, etc), as well as, not knowing if you are going with AIFF (PCM) or AC3 compressed audio, Figured it better to err on the safe side and suggest a two hour setting unless you know the movie play time is well under 90 minutes. Assumed you would then pick a specific setting to match your specific content (16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio) and the specific quality desired (best quality/2-pass or the fastest encode/single-pass).
However, if you have Ti Toast, then, as QTKirk indicated, it would likely be the best choice here. Simply drop the edited/standalone (or even a reference) file onto Toast and allow it to automatically encode to fit and create the menu(s)/or auto-start w/o menu as desired.

  • Best practice for compressing images to uniform size?

What would be an effective method of compressing all the images (JPEG) used by an application to a uniform contentLength?
Initial thought is to generate a new copy using processCopy with successively smaller integer values for compressionQuality (in steps of 5 or 10 say) until a result smaller than the target length is achieved, then replace the original with the first suitable copy.

contentLength is decided by many factors such as height, width, compressionQuality.
If all images have same height and width, changing compressionQuality will help to get expected contentLength. But be care when using too small compressionQuality, which may make image quality poor.
Another way to have uniform contentLength is using TIFF format with NONE compression.

  • What the best format for compression to DVD

I have a 18.91gb .mov file that I made of FCP and I want to compress it with out losing to mush quality, to be able to fit on to a DVD.

Compressor is doing a HD to SD conversion in addition to creating a MPG-2 file.
I have had video turn out wonderful using this work flow and other times I have not.
In worst case scenarios I have ended up doing the SD conversion in FC and then creating the MPG-2 from the SD FC export.
If you have problems or are not happy with the final compression you may want to do a test on a problem scene with the above work flow and see if you get better results. Whenever I have had compressor issues this has solved it.

  • When bouncing- what's best method for smallest file size/highest quality?

I am in the process of embedding 3 mp3's into a PDF to submit as a portfolio. The PDF also has text, and two scores included, and with the 3 embedded mp3's it can't be more than 10mb.
So my question is: When bouncing a project out of Logic, what is the best method for getting the smallest file size, but retaining the best audio quality? And once it's out of Logic and it is an mp3 or other type of audio file, is there a best format for compressing it further, and still maintaining the relative quality?
I bounced out the three projects into wav's. Now I am using Switch for Mac to compress them down to smaller Mp3's. I basically need them to be about 3 mb each. Two of the recordings sound OK at that size, but they are just MIDI(one project is piano and string quartet, the other is just piano- all software instruments. The recording that combines MIDI and Audio and has more tracks (three audio tracks and 10 Midi/software instrument tracks)and sounds completely horrible if I get it under 5 mb as an mp3. The problem is that I need all three to equal around 9mb, but still sound good enough to submit as a portfolio for consideration into a Master's program.
If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Please be detailed in your response, because I am new to logic and I really need the step by step.
    Thank you...

The highest bitrate that falls within your limits. You'll have to calculate how big your MP3's can be, then choose the bitrate that keeps the size within your limit. The formula is simple: bitrate is the number of kilobits per second, so a 46 second stereo file at 96 kbps would be 96 x 46 = 4416 kbits / 8* = 552 kBytes or 0.552 MB. (*8 bits = 1 Byte)
So if you know the length of your tracks you can calculate what bitrate you need to keep it within 10 MB total.
I consider 128 kbps the lowest bearable bitrate for popsongs and other modern drumkit based music. Deterioration of sound quality is often directly related to the quality of the initial mix and the type of instruments used in it. Piano(-like) tones tend to sound watery pretty quickly at lower bitrates, as do crash and ride cymbals. But don't take my word for it, try it out.
And once it's out of Logic and it is an mp3 or other type of audio file, is there a best format for compressing it further, and still maintaining the relative quality?
You can only ZIP the whole thing after that, but that is just for transport. You'll have to unzip it again to use it. And no, you cannot compress an MP3 any further and still play it.
I bounced out the three projects into wav's. Now I am using Switch for Mac to compress them down to smaller Mp3's.
That is silly, you could have done that in Logic, which has one of the best MP3 encoders built in. And how good encoders are will especially come out at bitrates around or below 128, which you might be looking at.
I basically need them to be about 3 mb each.
So, one more scrap of info we need here: how long are those three pieces, exactly? I'll calculate the bitrate for you - but please bounce 'm directly out of Logic as MP3's. They will very probably sound better than your WAV-conversions made with Switch.

Length of the piece? And does the .Wav bounce you have sound OK?

  • Best practices for image compression in dps

Hi! I have been reading up on best practices for image compression in dps, and I have read that the source assets of panoramas, image sequences, pan and zoom images, and audio skins are not resampled on upload. So you therefore need to resize them and compress them before dropping them into your article, because dps doesn't do it for you. Okay can do!
So then Im also reading that the source assets of slideshows, scrollable frames, and buttons ARE resampled as PNG images. Does this mean that DPS will compress them for you when you build the article? So does that mean I shouldn't bother going to the trouble of resizing these images at all? I can just pop in the 15mb 300dpi files used in the print magazine and dps will compress them upon building the article - and this will have no affect on file size?
And this is also the case with static background images?
    Thanks for your help!

All images are automatically resampled based on the size of the folio you make. You can drop in whatever resolution image you want, it doesn't matter.

Is this the best quality or should I go through compressor? if so, does compressor keep my chapter markers? it is a 30 minute dvd and when I have used compressor before it can take hours. thoughts? is there a big difference in quality between the two? thanks

Compressor is going to give you more control than just bringing .mov into DVD SP. I will often use self contained movies in case I need to re-encode, can save some time. Compressor will keep chapter markers if you put them in properly in Final Cut and exported them properly (set them as Chapter Markers in FC and include Chapter Markers on export from FC.)
A half hour movie shouldn't take hours, but it does depend on your machine, what frame controls you have set, what Codec etc....

  • What is the best workflow for AVCHD with iMovie/iDVD 09?

I am recording AVCHD video with a Sony HDR-SR11. I don't have a blu-ray burner yet, so I want to create the highest quality DVD's I can from this source video using my MacBook and the software I have (iMovie 09 and iDVD 09).
Currently I am importing the video clips into iMovie 09 at the 1920x1200 setting. After creating a 16:9 movie I choose "Share to Media Browser" and export at the highest setting I see (I think 1280x720, I'm not on the MacBook at the moment).
After a long while this completes and I launch iDVD 09. I drag the movie I exported above into the theme and burn at Professional Quality. After another long wait I have my DVD but I'm quite disappointed with the video quality.
Even taking into account that DVD is not a hi-def disc format it seems like the video quality should be better. Is there a better workflow I should be using with this combination of software? Maybe some way to avoid scaling/compressing the video twice? Or is this as good as it gets with iMovie 09 and iDVD 09? I may have access to iMovie 06, if that would help.
    Thanks,
    Gerald

    3) Share to Media Browser with Best Quality
For folks like me that wonder exactly how did you do this:
(I don't know what Media Browser is yet.)
I did this: (I got some warnings - did you?)
    In iMovie:
Selected my 1280x720 "HD" video in the Project panel,
    Share->Media Browser...
    - if HD is greyed out, you already shared this size to Media Browser, go to next step,
or select "Remove from Media Browser, check HD, click Remove"
    - if HD is not greyed, but is not check marked,
select Computer icon, then uncheck Mobile, Med, and Lrg, leaving only HD checked
With HD checked, Click Publish - watch "Creating the HD movie.."
Bring up iDVD, Select Create a new project, browse for location and enter project name
If Themes at bottom right is not selected (Dark), click it
Double click a theme - for example under Revolution, choose Chapters.
At bottom right, select Media, At top right, select Movies
Under iMovie should be your iMovie project - mine says "My First Project" (I didn't name iMovie proj)
    Select your iMovie Project,
you should see a thumb of your video with dimension, size listed
(movie duration is down at bottom right.)
Drag the thumbnail onto the iDVD preview window (I don't what that window is officially called)
drop it under the theme title "Revolution Chapters" for this example
You should see a running preview of your video with the project name below it.
Important step: Project->Project Info, Under Encoding: select Best or Professional Quality
Ok re-encoding warning, close Proj Info window.
File->Burn DVD... Popup says "Warnings in Project", select Continue Burning
Insert DVD (Apple designed sharp edges on the SuperDrive on purpose?)
    I used Staples 4x DVD-RW first.
Watch process proceed till DVD is ejected...Don't believe "Time remaining: about one minute"
My DVD-R120 player-recorder would not load the disk. It played fine on iMac, a WindowsXP laptop, and a Windows XP desktop. This DVD machine only likes old 1X RW media for some reason. I wish someone made a standalone Blu-Ray recorder/player. I burned a second copy to some gold Sony 1X/2X DVD-RW media, and this disk played fine.
Picture quality is soft compared to HD material, but the moire patterns on some edges is only somewhat reduced over the Share to iDVD version. This Share to Media Browser version is acceptable for folks that won't go to Vimeo or YouTube to see my videos in HD.

  • Best practice for exporting from iMovie '08 to iDVD

I am looking to find out what is the best practice for exporting from iMovie '08 to iDVD. I have read the other postings that give the basic howto (export to Media Browser then select the video in iDVD). However, my question is a little more technical. I have 1080i HD projects. I am interested in burning them to DVD in the best possible quality. What setting should I be using when I publish to Media Browser?
I am wondering about quality loss due to more than one conversion/compression. I suspect that when I export to the Media Browser then this is occurring. If I am not mistaken iMovie is using something like H.264 for this. Then, when I run iDVD I suspect it will it do another conversion/compression, I think to get to MPEG2. Not only could this result in a loss of quality but also it will take extra time. I am interested to know what others think about this.
Finally, I am looking to create DVDs for a lot of video. I am wondering if there are any USB or firewire hardware devices out there that could speed up the compression. I use the Elgato Turbo.264 when I want to encode to H.264 but I wonder if there is something similar for DVD creation.
    Thanks in advance.

the standards for videoDVD are 720x480, and usually mpeg2 encoded..
so, your HiDef project HAS to be 'downsampled' somehow..
I would Export with Qucktime/apple intermediate => which is the 'format' your project is allready, and you avoid any useless 'inbetween encoding'..
iDVD will 'swallow' this huge export file - don't mind: iDVD cares for length, not size.
iDVD will then convert into DVD-standards..
you can 'raise' quality, by using projects <60min - this sets iDVD automatically to highest technical possible bitrate
hint: judge pic quality on a DVDplayer + TV.. not on your computer (DVDs are meant for TVdelivery)
