Best sequence setting for Sony HXR-NX5U (1920x1080)? Also, why use Sony Content Browser?

Hello,
I'm using Premiere CS 5.0 and I am hoping to find a sequence setting that doesn't require me to render footage from my new camera, a Sony HXR-NX5U.
Can anyone help me out?  Also, does anyone use Sony's Content Browser?  If so, why?  It seems like a wasted extra step in the workflow.

  • Best sequence setting for use with images?

    Hey all.
I'll be working on a project that will be dealing with mostly images. I have them in their original RAW format as well as jpgs. After messing around in Final Cut with the images, I've noticed that the Viewer will display the image crisp and clear and once displayed on the Canvas window, the image is slightly blurred and the quality is decreased slightly which I'm assuming is because of sequence setting? Basically I'm wondering what my settings should be to produce the highest quality images when displayed in a quicktime movie when I export it.
Examples of high quality images in a quicktime movie of what I'm looking for:

    Any input would be appreciated.

a project that will be dealing with mostly images...
And what will the other stuff be, video? What format?
The viewer always presents the image as is. When you place it on the Timeline, it takes on the attributes of the Sequence setting.
Your images might be 4000x3000 pixels, but that's not a video standard. Blowing up any video to those pixel dimensions will make it look awful.

  • FCP: What is the best quality sequence setting for HD Video with JPEGs?

    Hello,
If I am editing digital still images that are 3696x2464, in order to make them into a HD video in FCP what is the best sequence setting?
There are so many HDV settings and I still don't understand the aspect ratio options...
    please advise!

    Hello,
where do I choose the ProResLT in the setting window? and What should be the Frame Size and Pixel Aspect Ratio? I am trying different options and having a hard time finding a setting that doesn't distort or pixel the image. Please help!
Additionally, would this setting maintain the quality even when the movie is exported and burnt onto a DVD?
    many thanks.

  • HOW CAN I CONNECT A STEREO MICROPHONE TO MY SONY HXR-NX5U CAMCORDER?

I recently purchased a SONY HXR-NX5U professional camcorder, and want to be able to connect an external, wired, STEREO mike to it. But I don't quite understand HOW to do it. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
The camera has 2 XLR mike-sockets, each of which is obviously for a MONO, not STEREO, mike.
And the wire of the STEREO mike that I want to be able to connect has a STEREO MINIPLUG (3.5mm), not an XLR plug, at the end
Is the solution about CONNECTING this external STEREO mike as simple as doing what I've TRIED to do (but doesn;t seem to work) -- which is: (a)insert, into the camera's 2 XLR-sockets,  2 XLR-plug-to-phonosocket adapters, (b) plug into those 2 phonosockets a Y-Connector which, at the "Y" end, has 2 phonoplugs and which, at the 3rd end, has a STEREO MINISOCKET for the microphone, and (c) then insert the STEREO mike's miniplug into the Y-connector's minisocket?
That's what was recommended to me and which I've tried, but it doesn't seem to work. Maybe I just don't understand yet how to turn off the camera's built-in mike and turn on this external STEREO mike -- but the built-in mike keeps working and this external stereo mike -- hooked-up this way -- stays inactive.
    ANY SOLUTIONS?
ALSO, I've been told that hooking up a STEREO mike this way -- assuming it works -- would give me REDUCED SOUND-QUALITY. Is that actually so? And if so, why -- and what can I do about it?

    A few things...
    1. If you are still hearing the internal mic check the switches on the side panel and make sure the internal is not being fed to channels 1 or 2. The ability to mix internal/external mics is a feature of the camera.
    2. How are you powering the mic? If it doesn't have it's own battery/power supply it is expecting phantom power from the camera which it will not be receiving via the adaptors.
    3. If the mic has its own power you should be able to do this via the Y cable provided the inputs are set to MIC and the side switches are set to INPUT 1 and INPUT two for each channel.
Hope this helps. Feel free to give our support team a call at 800 883 6817 if you'd like to discuss with a Sony tech.

  • Strange audio behavior w/new Sony HXR-NX5U AVCHD CAMCORDER

Help,  I just unpacked my Sony HXR-NX5U AVCHD CAMCORDER.  All went well with video, CMU software, etc.  I have CS5 on the way, but for now am still using CS4.  I set up the project with AVCHD 1080i30 (60i).  I import my video and the image looks fine, but the audio is all HISS  - total clipping.  I listened to the file with Sony's CMU software and it sounds perfect.  I have eliminated camera error by using multiple mikes, internal mike, headphone audio sounds great and again, with Sony's CMU software the m2ts files sound normal.  What am I doing wrong?
Any help would be appreciated as I really want to use this camera tonight.
    Regards,
    Lisa

How (step-by-step) are you getting the files from camcorder to PPro?
For my Canon Vixia, I simply use WinExplorer to copy the individual MTS files from SD card to hard drive, and then import into CS5
For other cameras, I have read that required "metadata" is contained in the folder structure, so an entire folder must be copied from camera to computer... often or sometimes using the software that came with the camera, since it is designed to do a "complete" copy

  • Best Sequence Setting

What is the best sequence setting when combining HDV (1440x1080) and AVCHD (1920x1080) clips for eventual output to BluRay?

nd is that the same as choosing "new sequence from clip" for the HDV clip with the resulting sequence "editing mode" then fixed at"HDV 1080i"?
    Yes.
You could do this with the footage that you have most of then use the Modify>Interpret routine o nthe other stuff.

  • Sony HXR-NX5U - HD or SD?

    Hello -
I shoot with Sony HXR-NX5U NXCAM in AVCHD FX (24Mbps) 1920x1080/60i format.
I mainly deliver in DVD or DVD-DL format to my clients.
I am noticing that the quality is not as good when watching on a standard DVD player due to the massive HD file size on a DVD.
    My question is:
The camera allows me to shoot in SD mode as well. IF, I were to shoot in SD format and deliver on DVD or DVD-DL.
Will the quality be better and nice, sharp looking? or do you suggest shooting in HD format and deliver on DVD/DL?
    Thanks for your help.

First off, there is no such thing as a "massive hd file on a dvd". All DVDs are standard definition. What you are seeing is the effect of compressing your file from a larger image to a smaller image along with the necessary compression to bring the bit playback rate under 7 .
What most likely needs improving is how you compress the material for DVDs.

  • What are the best sequence settings for anamorphic?

    sorry for the long explanation....
i have a project that was shot 16:9. my question is what is the best sequence setting to use so that when i export it to tape it will look right on a regular TV? on the FCP viewer it looks right with either setting. the difference is that if i choose a regular sequence setting ("anamorphic" unchecked), the video clips need to be rendered (it's green, but it will limit my ability to add effects and watch them without rendering). therefore i would prefer to use the anamorphic setting that does not need rendering. However, when i export the movie it comes out stretched (and only works with TV that has an anamorphic setting).
Can i edit the whole project with the anamorphic sequence setting and in the end copy it to a regular sequence without it becoming stretched?
i tried this on a little test sequence and it appeared to work, but i'm afraid that if the project becomes elaborate... well, last time i tried editing an anamorphic sequence (a while back, on FCP 2) i had to redo my whole film cut by cut with a regular sequence setting and then render it anamorphic so that it will look right.... it simply didn't work to just cut and paste the project onto a new regular sequence (could this have happened because i had many effects?). it came out stretched as it would when you merely uncheck the "anamorphic" box. has this been solved in the newer versions?

Your settings -- between the Compressor, Pixel Aspect Ratio and Frame Size -- are oil-and-water.
If this is going to YouTube (meaning not going to be viewed on traditional TVs) and it's mainly Photos, try using this:
    Frame Size: 1280x720
    Aspect Ratio: HDTV 720p
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    Compressor: Motion JPEG A
Quality: 100% (though in a lot of cases, you could drag this down to about 75-80% and quality will not suffer)
Unfortunately, you won't get much (if any) real-time effects. Unless, of course, you're on FCP 6 or later, where you can use a ProRes compressor instead. But with your signature saying 10.4. something, I wasn't sure if it was safe to assume that. The Motion-JPEG setting should work in all versions.

  • Sony HXR-NX5U

My current video camera is a Sony TRV-20, a mini DV camera that I've had for 11 years. I just purchased a Sony HXR-NX5U camera, which records to memory cards using the AVC HD format. The Mac that I have was purchased in 2005 and is a Dual 2.7 G5 with 8GB of RAM. I have Final Cut Studio 2, but am unable to use Final Cut Studio 3 since my Mac still uses a PowerPC chip and not an Intel chip.
What I'm wondering is how well my setup will be able to handle HD video from this camera. Will I be able to work with the video this camera produces at its highest quality settings, or will I need to scale back a bit? Or will I need a new Intel Mac altogether?

Can FCP work natively with AVCHD files
    nope.
or is ProRes so good that you wouldn't want to?
    ProRes is an editing codec.
Can you export AVCHD, or only ProRes and SD footage once you're done?
    Gotta convert to ProRes.
When it records in 1080/24p, does it record in that mode natively? Or, does it record the footage as interlaced and then you can remove the pulldown during the import?
Not sure. I don't own the camera. Shoot a test and see. Or, look that up in the camera manual.

  • What is the best Compressor setting for best quality video playback on an iBook g4?

I know the iBook and G4's in general are very outdated today, but I need to ask anyways. I have some video projects in 720p and 1080p in which I have down converted to 480p and also exported to MPEG-2 for DVD (personal wedding videos and videos made for my clients using Final Cut Studio). Anything encoded at most resolutions using h264 won't play on my iBook. Even 480p.
I have about 20 hours of mixed video content that I need it in a format that is suitable for an iPhone 4 and an iBook 12" with a 1.2GHz G4, 1.25GB RAM and I added a 250 WD 5400 IDE hard disk (running 10.5.8 and 10.4.11 for Classic Mode). I know the iBook doesn't seem like the best tool for modern video playback, but I need to figure out which setting will play best with iPhone 4 and iBook so I don't need to make 2 local copies of each video for each device.
The iBook plays best with the original DVD output MPEG-2 file and playing back in QT Pro or VLC... but I already have 180 GB's of MPEG-2 files now and my little HD is almost full. I don't have enough room to convert all the iPhone 4 counterparts. If I use Compressor 3.5.3, what is the optimal setting for iBook and iPhone .m4v or .mp4 files that can play on both devices? So far 720x400-480 widescreen videos @ 29fps works great on my iPhone, Apple TV 2, and other computers but seems to murder my poor iBook if encoded with high profile (and still choppy on simple profiles). 640x480 (adding black matte bars to my videos) plays fine in MPEG-2 but drops frames or goes to black screen if I convert it to mp4 (and looks bad on the iPhone 4 because of the matte). But if I convert on any of the simple profiles, it looks terrible on my iPhone 4 and a blocky on the iBook.
This is the problem leading me to having 2 copies of each video and eating my hard disk space. What is the best video setting for both playback on the iBook and iPhone 4? Can the iBook playback H264 at all in decent resolutionsat all? I don't really want to have a 480p .m4v collection for the iPhone 4 and a MPEG-2 RAW collection just to play the same videos on the iBook.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Update: The iBook can play any 480p video and higher if I encode them with DivX and in AVI format. But of course this is not compatible with my iPhone 4. At least I can shrink my library now and get away from the full MPEG-2s. I don't get why I can't use Apple's h264 though. There has to be a setting I am missing. The sample Apple h264 videos from the days of Tiger worked flawlessly on my iBook when it was new so the CPU must be capable of decoding it. I really can't understand this.
Also, since I made my videos in English for my family, I had to create soft subtitles for my wife's Chinese family, and I can't get players like QT with perian or MPlayerX to sync them properly to an AVI encoded with DivX, they only sync well with the iPhone 4 m4v/mp4 formatted files I made. This is a real pickle.
So now I may need three or four copies of each video, LOL. I need to hardcode the subtitles if I want to use AVI to playback on older machines, and keep the mp4 file for the iDevices too, while keeping higher quality h264 videos for my American relatives...
If h264 is compatible with my iBook, what is the proper encoding settings? Must I dramatically lower the settings or frame rate? I can settle on 2 copies of each video that way. One iBook/G4/eMac compatible video that syncs correctly with my srt soft subs, and another version that works well with my iPhone 4 and iPad.
All in all, I will end up with more than 3 or 4 version of each video. On my late G5 dual core I have the full 720-1080p uncompressed master files. On my i5 iMac I have the h264 compressed versions for distribution, and lower versions for my iDevices. Now I need to keep either full MPEG-2 files for the iBook to play, or convert to older formats like DivX AVI for our family's legacy machines. I am running out of hard disk space quick now, LOL.
    Is there an easier way?

What is the best export setting for video from premeire to blogger.com or blogspot.com

Best BIOS setting for MSI K8N Plat + AMD 3000+ Venice + Geil Value RAM

If you want SSE3 support and you do not overclock, Bios 1.4 is the only one officially available (1.41beta is not official).
Try to upgrade to 1.4 and see it for yourself, do the upgrade with floppy in DOS so that you can save your old Bios.
I would rather wait till mid June when a less troublesome new bios is suppose to be availabe for NEO4 MBs.

  • What Sequence Setting for 4:3 Aspect Ratio?

Just moved up from FCE to FCS2. Do commercials for small market cable and broadcast in SD 4:3 in FCE. Now in FCP I see a sequence setting for Frame Size Aspect Ratio NTSC DV that shows 3:2 aspect. Not really clear on what this is and after pouring through the manuals and searching this forum, still don't get it.
In the end, I want normal SD 4:3 TV commercials. In FCE, it was a simple NTSC setting. Does my sequence in FCP need to be 4:3 or 3:2? Need a little education on this and can't find any explanation anywhere.
    Thanks for the help.

What format is your source? I would never export out of FCP in that manner to achieve a frame rate conversion.
There are a couple of ways to change your footage from 23.98 to 29.97. The easiest I feel, is to select all the clips in your 23.98 sequence using CMD+A. Then copy (CMD+C),create a new 29.97 sequence and paste (CMD+V) those clips into your new sequence. Render and export a Quicktime Movie, Self-Contained.
However, I'm curious if you're shooting in HD based on your 23.98 frame rate. If you are, then you should be using a better SD sequence than DV which is 4:1:1 color sub-sampling. You may be throwing away half of your color information by working in that format.
    Andy
    Andy:
Using your method of copy/paste to a new 29.98 sequence solved the problem. Thanks.
What I had done to try out the new features in FCP vs. FCE was to create a 23.98 timeline (since I am shooting in SD 24pa with a DVX100A), add a Motion Master Template, add a few jpg's to the drop zones, add 3 NTSC-formatted jpg's to the end for the logos, add a Soundtrack music bed.
For future commercials, will likely be shooting 24pa footage, so wanted to figure out working in a 23.98 sequence. Just had not understood how to get it back to 29.98 for the cable company and broadcast stations. Your advice (copy to new sequence) makes it simple. Hopefully based on this info, I am still on the right track to accomplish my goal. I want to get the 24p look for some clients, but deliver the finished spots via upload to the stations' servers in a QT MOV.
If you have any other advice that would improve things, ready, willing and able to listen. Been Mac-ing since Mac Plus days, but new to FCP. Made the switch from Express with the access to 24p shooting. Thanks.
