Best way to divide iDVD project onto 2 DVDs?

I have an iDVD project that I've spent sooooooo much time on, and after burning to DVD, the quality was awful (zigzaginess with movement in the shadow areas, etc etc).
The project duration is 80:44 minutes. DVD capacity says 4.4GB of 4.2 GB.
So would the best thing be to divide it into two DVDs? Part 1 and Part 2? Do I just make a copy of the file, and delete chapters 1-25 on one and chapters 26-51 on the other? Is it that simple?

No, a standard DVD-R disk can hold 120 minutes, so you are well within the disk capacity. The file size has nothing to do with it. It is running time that counts. Also, 4.2 GB = 4.7 GB. It is just being expressed differently. But none of this has any bearing on the quality of your final DVD. You are well within capacity. It is not necessary, nor would it be helpful, to divide your project into two DVDs.
If your still images look jaggy, it probably was because you used the Share menu function to share your iMovie project to iDVD and when the prompt came up to render or proceed anyway, you selected render. Don't do that. Always select Proceed Anyway. That way iDVD will do the rendering and it does a much better job than iMovie. iMovie's rendering, in fact, is destructive and can ruin the appearance of your still images on the final DVD.
Instead of using the Share function, I find it best to drag the iMovie project icon (the one with the star on it) into the edge of your iDVD main menu window, being careful not to put it in a drop zone. Your movie will then import into iDVD and iDVD will handle all of the rendering. Your results will be much better.
Then save your iDVD project as a disk image (an option on the file menu) and burn your DVD from the Disk Image using the Disk Utility app on your Mac. That usually yields the best results.
Also, for projects between 60 minutes and 120 minutes duration, you should burn using the Best Quality setting rather than best performance.
If your moving video clips look like they have moving combed lines through them when the clip depicts hard edged images or parallel lines, that is due to interlacing. iDVD is designed to produce projects that play on an interlaced TV. If you play it on a progressive screen TV, or on your progressive computer screen, you may get the wavy lines that come from playing interlaced material on a progressive screen. Splitting your project into two projects will not help that.

What is the best way to record a project from the timeline to an external recorder via firewire? Also, who makes a recorder that works with a mac and recordes in realtime? This is possible right?

While theoretically possible, sometimes the camera people disable recording back to tape from the computer due to DRM (digital rights managment) issues. They will allow tape to tape transfers however.
Test your process first is all I can advise.

  • Best way to save iMovie Projects

I am using iMovieHD and have about 50 hours of video to import and then to save. I recently bought a LaCie 250G hard drive. I do not know the best way to save these movies which I have imported and edited but since they are in effect out family treasury I would like a good quality. I can al;ways make new iDVDs from the edited iMovie so assume I will not need to save the iDVD projects. Any recommendations?

    Hi Hunting,
"Quciktime" is not a format nor a compression method; QT is "just" a socalled container or warpper, containing many media formats (the .mov suffix is irritating people...), have a look here for an overview how many formats 6 codecs are a "Quicktime" file...
... mpeg4 is just one of them...
    to answer your question:
that depends MUCH on, what you want to do later with your stored movies:
    * dv is highest possible quality with iM files - but: 1h = ~12Gb !!
    * mpeg4 my personal favorite, good pic quality, small file size BUT! as any mpeg-"flavor", it is a lossy compression codec...- in case, you plan to make in two years a nice dvd, that lossy mpeg4 has to be converted into mpeg2 (another lossys format) ...
there are some dvd-standalone player on the market, able to playback ISO-conform mpeg4 files (not in a .mov container, but as .mp4....)
    * in case, you want re-edit, you need to store the iM-projects...
    * the new h.264 is a fanstatstic codec, but too new, as: you need fast Macs for playback and warp-fast Mac for encoding...
    summary/recommendation:
hd drives prices drop; I would store in .dv, three times bigger as a dvd (tento 20 times bigger then a mpeg4...) but best format for "post processing" (edits, dvd burns, website compression, switching to mpeg4, h.264....)
to add some silly ToolTime idea (call me Tim, I'm using it, short in money):
just for storage, you can buy 3,4,5 drives plus ONE empty fw-case; it is very easy to build a drive inside such case (two multi-pin cables); transfer files; build second hd into case... you just store the hds... looks silly, but works important: write onto some paper, what's on that drives...

  • Getting a  90 min fce-hd project onto DVD

    Hello,
I have a 90 minute HD project completed in my timeline and I'm having difficulty getting it onto DVD. The "self-contained" movie file is 50 GBs. Can iDVD handle a compression of this size
or do I absolutely need COMPRESSOR to realize a decent quality DVD?
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Here's the process to burn DVD for household DVD player:
In FCE use export to quicktime, uncheck "self contained". There is not quicktime encoding at this stage. The encoding process will occur in iDVD itself uppon burning. It's an invisible process.
Drag the resulting file in a new iDVD project.
From this stage, it's the total length of your movie(s) and all animated menus in iDVD that rules the choice of your support(DVD blank).
You have to use single layer for a total of 2 hours, or dual layers for 4 hours (if your mac can support this blank DVD). Check your iDVD preference to select the right encoding method, best quality or better performances.
Click the burn button., and voilà.

  • What is best way to manage multiple projects with limited HD space?

I am running Premiere Elements 3 on a HP desktop with a 250 GB hard drive.  I also have a 500 GB external HD attached.  The main desktop HD is filled up with programs, photos, and current video projects for PE 3.  PE seems to work best when it can access files from the internal HD and not have to access them from an external HD.  Since I have many video projects going now, I cannot keep all the clips on the desktop HD so have put them on the external HD.  I used to keep just backups on the external HD, but now have to keep some of the original copies of clips and projects as well.  So when running PE3 I have to copy things back and forth to the desktop computer HD so I can run it without it needing to access the external HD.  This takes alot of time.
Is there a better way to do things?  What is the best strategy for running PE when HD space on your computer is limited?  Do I need to free up much more of my 250 GB internal HD space so I can run all current projects from there?  And what is the best strategy for backing up my clips and projects.  Multiple external HDs?  Thanks for any advice on file and project management.

    First, welcome to the forum.
I do just as Steve suggests, though for slightly different reasons. I need each Project to be portable between my laptop and my workstation. I have a couple dozen 1 - 2TB FW-800 external 7200RPM HDD's, so each Project goes onto one of these. Obviously with the size, I can group several normal Projects onto the same external.
In my case, most of my Assets are stored on a NAS drive, and I will copy these over to the appropriate Project folder structure on the externals. If I have done Capture, those files will be in the Project's folder structure too. My stock stuff is always a copy, as will be my still images. Each Project has a root folder with its name and then appropriate sub-folders, i.e. Stills, Music, etc. below that root folder. All stays together.
One trick for my case is that each external has the same exact drive letter assignment in the OS of each of my computers, so that external Z:\ is Z:\ on all computers. This must be done at the OS-level for all computers. I use labels on each external, so I know that I have Z:\, or Y:\ plugged in.
For editing, this is not the most efficient way to handle Projects, or Assets. In a perfect world, one would have their OS and programs on C:\, their media on a RAID 0 D:\, their Projects and Scratch Disks on E:\, their Exports on F:\ and maybe their audio on another RAID 0 G:\. All original Assets would be backed up to maybe a NAS unit. This would give the greatest efficiencey, but would kill my portability. I pay a price in efficiency, so that I can spend much of the day by the pool on the laptop and then move the complete Project, along with all copies of all Assets and Scratch Disks upstairs to the editing suite. The workstation is setup like my ideal, but if I have a Project on it (using all of the resources of that machine and it's multiple HDD's), I cannot easily move down to the laptop - so I sacrifice the speed for the portability.
One comment on using externals: FW-800 works fine for me. All of my newer external HDD's have that connection and each computer has either a FW-800 card, or ExpressCard. The use of eSATA would be even better, but I have a major investment in FW-800, so I have to consider that legacy. Someday, they'll all be eSATA, or whatever comes next. I found that FW-400 was too slow for me, so I relegated those older externals to just archive. Years ago, I tried USB externals, but found that I have problems with them, plus the connection speed was painfully slow. I gave up completely on those. I do not think that I have any USB only externals left. Goodwill got them all. I also tried to edit to/from my gigabit NAS and gave up on that because of the speed. It now is a storage unit for stock Assets that are copied over to the Project folders.
If you have USB externals, give them a try. Just be a bit careful, especially if you have a faster computer, as that connection can cause problems if the data stream gets too big and too fast for the connection. Things will definitely go wrong at some point in a read/write cycle. Be very careful and keep copies of all irreplaceable Assets and also your Project files. Little is worse than having something get corrupted because the USB connection could not keep up. I've even had overloaded USB's shut down the entire system in a BSOD. Not very comforting, when you just completed 6 hours of editing!
Good luck, and hope that some of this helps,
    Hunt

  • How do you burn off final project onto dvd disk?

how do you burn off a final project onto a dvd disk....do you need idvd or dvd studio pro?

can i just export my project into toast and then burn it off?
Yes. Toast is capable of doing the compressing/encoding, multiplexing and burning, although in tests that I've done, Toast's encoding quality isn't nearly as good as iDVD, Compressor or DVD-SP.
do i need to compress it?
Toast will do that for you.
or do anything else to it?
Use good quality media. Stay away from poor quality brands like Memorex.

Hi - I'm brand new to all of this. I have finished creating my i-movie with divided chapters for i-dvd. Then I went to file/share/and sent the i-movie to i-dvd.
Now what?? I've been looking over the support topics, but I dont want to do anything except burn my i-movie onto a dvd and keep the chapter markers that i saved. I don't know where to begin!!
I guess I'm just having trouble getting started and making sense of it all. Can anyone help give me a jump-start please?
    Thank you!!

  • Any way to share idvd project with itunes?

    hi everyone,
I needed to know if there is any way to share an idvd project with itunes, in the same way that you can an imovie project with chapters and themes etc and then ideally to play it on your ipod as you would on a dvd player, selecting chapters etc.
    Would much appreciate any comments.

Well, there are two solutions to your problem:
    - convert your movies to DVD. Advantages: better quality, menus, chapters.
    - do the movies for iPod, but break them in smaller pieces, so you can jump to the next scene when needed. Advantage: smaller size, can be used on iPod.
Another possible solution is presented here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=791841. I'm not sure it will work, and I'll appreciate if you will try and let us know the results (I don't have a video iPod myself).
later edit: Sorry, I was wrong: HandBrake CAN decrypt commercial DVDs. It's a beautiful free tool.

  • Best way: backing up a project

    Hi again
I am hoping someone tell me the best way to back up and project to ensure I don't lose everything should my computer, Final Cut Pro X software or hardrives crash.
I have read the Final Cut Pro manual but still a little unsure if I am doing things right.
    My current setup:
All raw footage is saved on two harddrives - Harddrive A and Harddrive B. No worries!
I have been using Harddrive A with my Mac to seek footage for the Final Cut Pro X project.
When I don't have this harddrive plugged in, the events in my project say "Missing Event"
This makes me think that if this particular harddrive crashed my project would be broken OR can I hook up the other harddrive (hardrive B) and be assured that the events will reappear? If I have changed event names etc will this impact on Final Cut Pro connecting to the clips on hardrive B?
I have made a duplicate project (selecting ‘duplicate project and referenced events’ option) and this is also saved onto harddrive A. However, if hardrive A crashed I would lose the duplicates. I don't think I can save a duplicate project to Harddrive A as I believe the events would come up as 'missing event' - I'll wait to see what the answer is to my earlier question before testing this.
I am kind of worried also that Final Cut Pro could crash? Is it correct that if my project is saved on the harddrive I can transfer this to another computer with FCP X software?
Your suggestions for ensuring I don't lose 8 months of work and any reassurances would be much appreciated! Thank you

I make it simple. I have an internal SSD. I back that up to an external hard drive with Carbon Copy Cloner.  I have four external hard drives with all my data including all my video footage.  I have four more external drives that backup my master data drives. If I were smart I would have a second set of backups off site but I'm not that bright. The biggest danger here is to backup something that has a serious problem. When I am in the middle of a project I sometimes duplicate the timeline and try something new or just save a duplicate for safety sake. With a mirror image backup of your HD you're reasonably safe. My four data drives are always connected. I never open fcpx and get an alert msg. Good luck.

  • Best way to import BC4J projects or packages?

    Hello
This is a question on how to structure three BC4J Projects, where two of them refer to the third.
    Here is my question:
I have a project "Model", which contains all entity objects and associations. It represents more or less the data model of the underlying database. This project is a sort of "library-project" which contains the common parts of the two other projects.
The two other projects "Project1" and "Project2" each contain a set of specific view objects, view links and application modules to do the work they are intended to do. Both of them must import the "Model" project as they use the entity objects and associations, which are defined there.
If "Model" were just a simple jar file, this would be easy: Just include the jar file as a library, and that's all. But as "Model" is in fact a BC4J project, things are getting more complicated.
My solution now is to explicitely import all BC4J packages of "Model" to "Project1" and "Project2". This is neccessary in order to be able to refer to the entity objects of "Model" from the Wizards in "Project1" and "Project2".
But this causes a real mess in "Project1" and "Project2" as all packages defined in Model are explicitely included to theese projects and all of them appear in the Navigator.
What I really want, is to just include a sort of library (the "Model-Library") and to be able to refer to all BC4J objects defined in this library from the wizards.
Is there a simple way to achive this? Is there a best way to get as near as possible to this? How do other developers solve this problem?
    Any hints are appreciated
    Frank

    Frank,
BC4J design time has specific features to support exactly this use case, and your choice of organizing the projects this way is exactly the way the feature was intended.
Use the BC4J Deployment wizard to produce a simple JAR archive for the "library module" that has your business model (EO's and Assocs)
    Then in Project1:
    [list=1]
[*]Define a library, say called "BusinessModel" or whatever, that has the above-produced JAR file as its archive
[*]Make sure "BusinessModel" library is added to Project1's library list
[*]Use the project-level right-mouse option "Import Business Components..." to import the business module package. This will present a file dialog that allows you to navigate into the JAR file above as if it were a directory and drill down to select the packagename.xml file for the package of components you want to import.
    [list]
Then, the common business model package (or packages, if required) appear in the system navigator as "read only" components and can be used in the wizards as you build your view and appmodule components in Project1.

  • Best way to archive a project when it's "finished"

I was wondering what the best way is to store a project that is finished, but you still want the option of going back and modifying for other purposes.
Do you create one high quality movie and save it?
Do you create separate clips of everything used in your timeline with handles?
Do you render all graphics as files, or keep separate Motion and LiveType files?
Do you export fonts used for any text elements in case another computer doesn't have that font?
Do you make copies of the filters used with that project, in case another computer doesn't have it etc?
Thanks for your suggestions. I think they'll be valuable for a lot of other people...

Do you create one high quality movie and save it?
You don't even have to doubt that. A Master is a MUST.
Do you create separate clips of everything used in your timeline with handles?
That is an option and as said Media Manager can be of assistance alternatively if space is not an issue archive the entire media used for the project.
Do you render all graphics as files, or keep separate Motion and LiveType files?
    Keep original projects and exports.
One thing you can get rid of, especially if you doubt that you'll soon need to get back to that project are the render files (using render manage: main menu>tools>render manager). You can always render everything again.
Do you export fonts used for any text elements in case another computer doesn't have that font?
Do you make copies of the filters used with that project, in case another computer doesn't have it etc?
That is something easy and quick to do. Remenber though that certain third party plugins may not work with older OS X.

  • What's the best way to import pieces of a DVD?

I have about 20 DVDs of my family and kids and I'm trying to put together a little diddy with a lot of various clips of them into one movie, but I'm not sure the best way to do it. I really don't want to drag each DVD into my PowerBook and work from there. Is there way I can put the DVD in, mark the sections I want, then import them into either a single file or multiple files? I'm only trying to get 3 to 7 second clips of various videos and make a music video.
    Thanks,

    Hello,
There is a great software that I use just for this. It's called Cinematize. You can download it online - it cost's $60 bucks but it's was well worth to me and it's fast and works without a hitch. You can set the in and out points of the DVD and it grabs it, you can also set how it imports, like to DV format if you're going to edit in iMovie, and you can grab with or without audio.

  • Best way to split 3D project with constantly moving cameras

I created a 1 minute project in which the camera travels between 3 sets, while there is an animated 2D background. The background consists of overlaying .psd files which move around. The camera sweeps each set and then zooms to the next. Within each set are .mov and .psd files with tons of keyframing (although not too many filters). I think I'm starting to hit the outer limits of my hardware. I have it set to render draft quality for now, and it's still functional. I'm wondering what would be the best way to split it into smaller files, yet retain smooth motion of the camera between sets? I still need to fine tune the duration of each set, so I'm a little hesitant to break it up a this point, but may need to do so anyway. Thanks in advance.

Ok, I did it. Project complete. It turned out that I did have enough RAM, just not enough to RAM preview it all. I did flatten quite a bit of it prior to the camera moves. And an additional challenge was when I wanted to add a 5 second clip at the beginning. I wound up adding a second camera because all my timing was thrown off.
Anyway, here's a link to the final video.

Hey Bogie, I was thinking of starting a separate thread in the FCP or Compressor forums with recommended encodes for getting this monster of a file on the web. I tried several iterations and finally found one that both looked good, was big enough to watch, and small enough to load quickly. Does it make sense to start a new thread for which I already have the answer?
