Best workflow for multiclip with multiple microphones?

I'm working in sequences with nine cameras (one of which, unfortunately, is being turned off and on occasionally). The cameras are jam-synced, although sometimes there are discrepancies.
I also have nine different microphones that are a mixture of lavs and booms. None of the mics correspond to any particular camera, so I've been doing the following:
- Using multicam sequence to lay out my video on individual tracks based on their jam-sync TC
- Doing the same for the audio and manually syncing all of the video tracks to it.
This gives me a sequence with everything nicely lined up, nothing as multicam just yet. I'm then able to break the sequence down into chunks, multiclipping based on when the cameras are turned on and off.
But I haven't found a good way to get the 8 audio tracks linked to the video in my master multiclips that I'm creating. I tried linking all of the audio to my first angle (with the intention of keeping the multicam switcher always toggled to angle 1 audio while I switch between video tracks), but when I link the eight tracks to my first angle, and then create the multiclip, the first angle only retains ONE audio track split out as a stereo pair! Not all 9.
Any advice?

Good news, past me! I figured out that it wasn't including all eight tracks because when I was linking the audio to angle one, and then match framing before dragging my clip to the browser, I didn't realize that it was match-framing to the in-camera audio, not the newly - linked audio.
But does anyone have any general advice for how they do a multi-cam audio setup like mine? Do you use reference clips, generate aux timecode, etc?

  • What is the best workflow for AVCHD with iMovie/iDVD 09?

I am recording AVCHD video with a Sony HDR-SR11. I don't have a blu-ray burner yet, so I want to create the highest quality DVD's I can from this source video using my MacBook and the software I have (iMovie 09 and iDVD 09).
Currently I am importing the video clips into iMovie 09 at the 1920x1200 setting. After creating a 16:9 movie I choose "Share to Media Browser" and export at the highest setting I see (I think 1280x720, I'm not on the MacBook at the moment).
After a long while this completes and I launch iDVD 09. I drag the movie I exported above into the theme and burn at Professional Quality. After another long wait I have my DVD but I'm quite disappointed with the video quality.
Even taking into account that DVD is not a hi-def disc format it seems like the video quality should be better. Is there a better workflow I should be using with this combination of software? Maybe some way to avoid scaling/compressing the video twice? Or is this as good as it gets with iMovie 09 and iDVD 09? I may have access to iMovie 06, if that would help.
    Thanks,
    Gerald

    3) Share to Media Browser with Best Quality
For folks like me that wonder exactly how did you do this:
(I don't know what Media Browser is yet.)
I did this: (I got some warnings - did you?)
    In iMovie:
Selected my 1280x720 "HD" video in the Project panel,
    Share->Media Browser...
    - if HD is greyed out, you already shared this size to Media Browser, go to next step,
or select "Remove from Media Browser, check HD, click Remove"
    - if HD is not greyed, but is not check marked,
select Computer icon, then uncheck Mobile, Med, and Lrg, leaving only HD checked
With HD checked, Click Publish - watch "Creating the HD movie.."
Bring up iDVD, Select Create a new project, browse for location and enter project name
If Themes at bottom right is not selected (Dark), click it
Double click a theme - for example under Revolution, choose Chapters.
At bottom right, select Media, At top right, select Movies
Under iMovie should be your iMovie project - mine says "My First Project" (I didn't name iMovie proj)
    Select your iMovie Project,
you should see a thumb of your video with dimension, size listed
(movie duration is down at bottom right.)
Drag the thumbnail onto the iDVD preview window (I don't what that window is officially called)
drop it under the theme title "Revolution Chapters" for this example
You should see a running preview of your video with the project name below it.
Important step: Project->Project Info, Under Encoding: select Best or Professional Quality
Ok re-encoding warning, close Proj Info window.
File->Burn DVD... Popup says "Warnings in Project", select Continue Burning
Insert DVD (Apple designed sharp edges on the SuperDrive on purpose?)
    I used Staples 4x DVD-RW first.
Watch process proceed till DVD is ejected...Don't believe "Time remaining: about one minute"
My DVD-R120 player-recorder would not load the disk. It played fine on iMac, a WindowsXP laptop, and a Windows XP desktop. This DVD machine only likes old 1X RW media for some reason. I wish someone made a standalone Blu-Ray recorder/player. I burned a second copy to some gold Sony 1X/2X DVD-RW media, and this disk played fine.
Picture quality is soft compared to HD material, but the moire patterns on some edges is only somewhat reduced over the Share to iDVD version. This Share to Media Browser version is acceptable for folks that won't go to Vimeo or YouTube to see my videos in HD.

  • Question: Best practices for dealing with multiple AM configurations

    Hello all,
I have a project using ADF Business Components and ADF Faces. I would like to set up multiple configurations for the Application Modules to support the following scenarios:
1). Local testing and debugging - using a connection defined in JDeveloper and AM Pooling turned off.
2). Testing and debugging on an application server - using a JDBC Data Source and AM Pooling turned off
3). Production deployment - using a JDBC Data Source and AM Pooling turned on.
It is no problem to create multiple AM configurations to reflect this scenario. In order for the web part of the application to use the correct configurations, the DataBindings.cpx file must specify the correct ones. I was thinking to have 3 different DataBindings.cpx files and to change the CpxFileName context-param in the web.xml file as needed.
    My questions:
1). Does this make sense as an approach? It should be better than having to change a single AM configuration every time I deploy or test. Is there any easy way to keep multiple DataBIndings.cpx files in synch, given that we may add new pages from time-to-time? Alternatively, can we do some type of "include" processing to include just the dataControlUsages section into a common DataBindings.cpx file?
2). How would you manage the build-and-deploy process? For the most part, in JDev we would be using configuration #1. The only time to switch to configuration #2 or #3 would be to build an EAR file for deployment. Is this something that it would make sense to accomplish with ANT? I'm not an ANT expert at all. The ANT script would have "build-test-ear" and "build-prod_ear" targets which would swap in a correct web.xml file, recompile everything, build the EAR, then put the development web.xml file back. I'm relatively sure this is possible... comments?
3). Is there some other recommended approach?
I appreciate any insights from experience, or even just ideas or thoughts that I can test out.
    Best regards,
    John

    Hi K,
Sorry for the long long delay in responding I've been traveling - and thanks for the e-mail tickler too...
To answer your question in short, I do think that ANT is the right way to go; there is an extra ANT task called XMLTask that I was able to download and play with, and it seems it would make this manipulation of the cpx file (or the xcfg file, for that matter) pretty straightforward. I don't have any code to post; it's just in the conceptual stage for me right now. I didn't see anything magical in JDev 11 TP3 that solved this problem for me either.
Having said all of that, it's more complicated than it might appear. In addition to the DataBindings.cpx file (stores, among other things, which AM configuration to use for each data control), it's certainly possible to programmatically access an AM (specifying the configuration either directly in the code or via a properties file/etc). I'm not sure what the most common use case for AM configurations is, but in my case, I have a Test configuration and a Prod configuration. The Test config, among other things, disables AM pooling. When I am developing/testing, I always use the Test config; in Production, I always use the Prod config. Perhaps the best way for me to do this would be to have an "Active" config and use ANT tasks to copy either Test or Prod to "Active." However, our Subversion repository is going to have a few complaints about this.

  • Best settings for project with multiple format sources

New to Premiere Pro after leaving FCP behind and I feel like I've got enough under my belt to start a new project. Working in PP CS6.
Question: my source footage is going to be in many different formats from ripped flash video to footage shot on a C300; includes stills, QT files, etc. (My work involves a lot of found footage, image recycling, etc.)
I want to finish most likely at 1920x1080; exhibition will be festivals, but also DVD, streaming, etc. And I want to work in 24p.
What would be the best settings to use for this project? What codec? Etc?
In FCP I would have used Prores 422, but wonder if something native to PP would be better.
    Thank you.

Assuming the C300 footage will be 1080p/24, I'd probably work in that sequence myself.  Or possibly 720p/24 if the other assets were smaller than 1080.

  • What is the best workflow for Final Cut Pro X across multiple computers?

I travel on a team that is in a different location every week, so all of our video editing has to be fairly moble. We have 3 macbook pros and would like to use final cut X on all of them. What would be the best workflow for us all to work on the same project and sync it across the computers? (eg, one of us editing the footage, one editing the sound, one working on visual effects?)

My first question would be how well 5.1 would work with SL. People have reported problems.
As far as cameras are concerned, I would guess most any tape-based camera would work and so much depends on the kind of projects you work on that I wouldn't want to start guessing at your needs.
If you want broad access to tapeless and advanced formats try to locate and purchase an upgrade disk to 6 or 7.
    Good luck.

  • Best way to work with multiple Flash objects?

I am making an application that is going to need to use several  custom MovieClip-based classes from Flash.  I'm not sure if I'm using the terminology right.  What I have is a Flash file with movie clips, each clip has a class with properties and methods.  Many of the methods control what happens in the clip.
For example, if there was a clip "Person" with walking and sitting animation, there are methods "sit" and "walk" which would play the appropriate parts.  I need to add dynamically several "Person" clip/objects to the Flex app, and command them to walk or sit when needed.
What's the best workflow for this? How do I save the clips?  Or is is best just to do the whole thing in Flash?

Have you looked into using the  Flex Component Kit for Flash?

I have a project where I want to do some work on my laptop, then work on the desktop, then back to the laptop?
As a video guy, in Final Cut I do this by having two identical copies of my media, and simply transferring the FCP project file back and forth between the two computers.
Is there an equivalent in Aperture of transferring your selections/edits between two copies of Apeture with the original master files on both in identical projects?

I don't know what you mean by "bandwidth options". If you mean the frequencies and bands the iPad can use with cell carriers, those are listed in the Wireless and Cellular area of the tech specs. For iPads sold in the US, see:

If that's not what you meant, please post back and clarify what you mean by "bandwidth options".

  • Best workflow for colour grading in CS5.5

What is the best workflow for colour grading in Premiere Pro CS5.5? I don't like the 3 way colour grader in Premire I like to use Levels and Curves, so I normaly use Color Finese 3 LE in After Effects but it's hard to export an entire timeline to AE due to it not improting transitions and title text correctly.
I see in CS6 there is now Speed Grade available from Premiere Pro. can you export your entire timeline into Speed grade and it retain your titles and trasitions?
So how are most folks colour grading their finished timelines in Premire Pro?
    Kevin

If I can CC in Pr, I will. What prevents me from staying in Pr is if I need to do a lot of masking, secondary type corrections.  Ae is better for that, IMO.
I guess my general rule is, "The more love I need to put on my footage, the more likely it is I'll need to take the project to Ae."
When I do CC in Pr, my tools of choice are RGB Curves (which is CUDA friendly, and I have a CUDA card) for CC, and I use Three-Way or Fast CC mostly for increasing saturation.  I leave the other controls alone.
The advantage to doing CC in Pr, is the CUDA accelleration.  If you use CUDA effects, you can work a lot faster, due to less rendering.  Once you go to Ae, you lose CUDA, but you gain flexibility.  Therefore, there's not a single one-size-fits-all answer.
I also have a lot more available plugs in Ae.  I like Frischluft Curves, which is an oustanding curves based plug.  And the native Hue/Saturation effect in Ae is extremely useful for single hue corrections.  Pr doesn't have a similar native effect.
And then as a last step, after getting all my corrections "evened out," I'll add Magic Bullet Looks to an adjustment layer for an overall treatment.
I only opened SpeedGrade once after installing it.  I don't see why anybody would use it, unless they were already familiar with it.  You can't go back to Pr easily.  And in my world, projects are rarely finished.  Clients think they can make massive changes at any stage of post, even after mastering and delivery.  I've had clients make changes to spots after they've been airing for several days.  I laugh at editors who name anything "final."

  • Best workflow for creating logsheets before ingesting.

I'm looking for the best workflow for creating detailed log sheets of my avchd footage before ingesting/transferring it to FCP. I have many hours of footage shot with my Sony NX5U and only want to ingest the necessary clips. I'm using FCP 6.5 on a MacPro tower. Thanks.

    >I'm using FCP 6.5
NO you are not.  You might be using FCP 6.0.5.
Well, the only way you can ingest only sections of tapeless media is by using Log and Transfer.  And you cannot Log clips first, and transfer later.  You cannot do the same thing you did with tape, make a Batch Capture list.  So you would look at your footage in the FCP L&T interface, and you can send one to be transcoded while you move onto the next one to watch.  That can happen at the same time.
But, there's another issue here.  The Sony NX5U uses an AVCHD format that is slightly different than normal...not that there is a normal.  But I discovered that importing clips up to 10 min in length work fine, but anything over 10 min, and it took 4-5 times longer to import.  meaning a 30 min clip took just over two hours.  It was something that ClipWrap2 addressed before FCP did...and they only addressed the issue with the FCP 7.0.3 update.  FCP 6.0.5...or even the last update for that version, 6.0.6, doesn't address this.  There might be issues in importing this footage into FCP 6.
And the other options...Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere...don't have a "log and transfer" type interface.  They bring in the full clips only.  With Premiere, you are stuck with them being full length.  But with Avid, you acccess the footage via AMA (Avid Media Access), and then you'd make your selects on a sequence, and then consolidate/transcode only the footage on the sequence.
And no, there's no way to make a logging sheet for these apps either.
The best you can do is watch the footage, note the timecode, and manually enter those numbers when you go to bring in the footage.

  • Best workflow for burning Blu-ray and DVD

    Hi,
What's the best workflow for effciency sake for burning both a Blu-ray and a DVD of the same project?
Essientially I'd like to export and create a menu once, then be able to downrez to DVD. However, I'm not sure that is possible since blu-ray and DVD are differnt codecs.
    Thank you

The only way that you can get acceptable re-scaling of menus is to go from BR to DVD, and do the editing in Photoshop.  Simply re-scaling the menu here will not give acceptable results.
I usually copy the various button layers from the BR menu to a new DVD menu file created using the provided Photoshop preset.  You will still have to do  some manual re-scaling and alignment.  The thing that has given me the most trouble over the years is round button highlights - a segment is often chopped off.  Font sizes will probably need adjusting too.
Unless you are adept with handling layers and groups within Photoshop, it may be easier to start again.
Any attempt to convert within Encore is unlikely to produce acceptable menus in my experience.

  • Best workflow for creating games for pc and starling games in AIR

best workflow for creating games for pc and starling games in AIR.
I need to develop for tablets with starling and AIR as well as for pc without starling ie: downloading from a server.
    In starling you have to
    1. instantiate starling
    2. use texture atlases for loading graphic assets - well its the recommended way
    3. use juggler
    etc...
ie: with all these differences is it best to:
    1. create completely different projects
    2. just create different classes for the starling specific parts
    3. use a conditional compile constant
        eg: CONFIG::STARLING
                "then do this"
    or      CONFIG::CPU
              "then do this"
I currently have the latter but it feels a little messy. I would prefer separate classes for each platform where the image loading is concerned.
There must be so many game developers out there but in large gaming companies that know exactly what to do. Perhaps you can point me in the right direction with a book or something.
    CHEERS

The other thing is that I can't see the games being very different as you suggest. I have downloaded Lee Brimelows tut on creating a starling game on Lynda.com and the code is great for creating games using states for menu, play, gameover etc... The only difference is that he uses texture atlas and there is a great difference in loading them etc... so technically you would only need to handle them in a different class as collision and the rest of game play should be the same in both. I think!!!
Well, actually not exactly but near enough - maybe it might be easier to create separate projects and just cut and paste the new code introduced.

  • Multipage forms- best workflow for future editing

I'm struggling with understanding the proper workflow for creating and editing multipage forms.  I need to create a medical history form (PDF) where patients can enter their medical history and patient info.
This form is usually 6+ pages.  Each page has a header (logo and office address) and a footer (page number).
The problem I'm running into is when we need to make a change like add a question or change the wording of a question.  Is there a way we can edit the form (either in Word or an Adobe product) and not have to recreate the form in Acrobat Pro?
I've hired contract workers from Odesk and each one I've hiried claims they can edit the questions after the form is created.  But each time this happens, the form looks worse after each edit.  I'm pretty sure this is the problem because they are editing the text in Acrobat Pro, which has very limited text editing capabilites.
I'm wasting so much time going back and forth with contractors explaining to them that the text format looks like crap.
I'm very capable of designing and editing these forms myself, but I just don't have the time.  So I'm contracting this work out.
I'd greatly appreciate any advice on the best workflow for PDF forms.
    Thanks!

Yes, there is a way. You need to edit the original file format (Word, in
this case), and then create a new PDF.
You then open the old version (that has the form fields in it), and use the
Replace Pages command to replace the old pages with the ones from the new
file. This will maintain the form fields in place, although you might need
to rename them and align them with the new page contents.
This is a much better approach than trying to edit the PDF directly
(although this option has been greatly improved in Acrobat XI).

  • How to Restrict Single Delivery Date for PO with Multiple Line Items

    Dear Experts,
How to Restrict Single Delivery Date for PO with Multiple Line Items.
System needs to through Error Message if User Inputs Different Delivery Dates for PO with Multiple Line Items in ME21N Tcode.
Can we achive this by Some Enhancement in SAP or Not ???
If so how to do it.
    Any Inputs is highly appreciated.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Selvakumar. M

    Hi Selvakumar,
we can resrict the PO to have a single delivery date in all the line items by means of giving a error message or overwiting the delivery date keyed/determined in the line item.
You can use the BADI -> ME_PROCESS_PO_CUST. In which you need to implement the method PROCESS_SCHEDULE.
(for technical aid - This method will be called for each and every PO line item, From the imporing parameter im_schedule we can get all the details of current PO line, even we can change the data in the current PO line. )

While doing MIGO, for a PO with multiple line items, if one line item is having error, will we be able to go ahead with goods receipt? Or entire material document is blocked for doing MIGO?
We will be doing a development - in case if there is problem in goods receipt (checking of any parameter, and if it is missing - we will be posting error message)...is it possible to ahead with next line item and still post the material document?
If partial goods receipt if possible for PO with multiple line items, how do we do it?

    Hi
While doing MIGO, for a PO with multiple line items, if one line item is having error, will we be able to go ahead with goods receipt? Or entire material document is blocked for doing MIGO?
No. You cannot post the MIGO, if even one of the PO line item is having problem or giving error.
We will be doing a development - in case if there is problem in goods receipt (checking of any parameter, and if it is missing - we will be posting error message)...is it possible to ahead with next line item and still post the material document?
If you skip a line irem and do GR with next line item, how will you match quantity & value with the vendor Invoice at LIV ?
If partial goods receipt if possible for PO with multiple line items, how do we do it?
Partial goods receipt is possible for PO line items. That means, if PO has 100 qty for line item 1 then you can do GR for 50 now and 50 later depending on the vendors delivery.
Hope this is what you mean by "Partial Goods Receipt".

  • Best practice for dealing with Recordsets

    Hi all,
I'm wondering what is best practice for dealing with data retrieved via JDBC as Recordsets without involving third part products such as Hibernate etc. I've been told to NOT use RecordSets throughout in my applications since they are taking up resources and are expensive. I'm wondering which collection type is best to convert RecordSets into. The apps I'm building are webbased using JSPs as presentation layer, beans and servlets.
    Many thanks
    Erik

There is no requirement that DAO's have a direct mapping to Database Tables. One of the advantages of the DAO pattern is that the business layer isn't directly aware of the persistence layer. If the joined data is used in the business code as if it were an unnormalized table, then you might want to provide a DAO for the joined data. If the joined data provides a subsiduray object within some particular object, you might add the access method to the DAO for the outer object.
    eg:
In a user permissioning system where:
    1 user has many userRoles
    1 role has many userRoles
    1 role has many rolePermissions
    1 permission has many rolePermissions
ie. there is a many to many relationship between users and roles, and between roles and permissions.
The administrator needs to be able to add and delete permissions for roles and roles for users, so the crud for the rolePermissions table is probably most useful in the RoleDAO, and the crud for the userRoles table in the UserDAO. DOA's also can call each other.
During operation the system needs to be able to get all permissions for a user at login, so the UserDAO should provide a readPermissions method that does a rather complex join across the user, userRole, rolePermission and permission tables..
Note that f the system I just described were done with LDAP, a Hierarchical database or an Object database, the userRoles and rolePermissions tables wouldn't even exist, these are RDBMS artifacts since relational databases don't understand many to many relationships. This is good reason to avoid providing DAO's that give access to those tables.
