@Potoroo
Guess this is what you mean, i would like to point out though that extra 9db on all channels would make not much if any difference to the sound you percieve.
Its better no doubt about it, but is it worth the extra money ?
? 60 as opposed to ?90 i don't think so, do you ?

  • Best dock for sound system

I'm looking for either a dock or a/v cable that will give me the best sound from a high-powered serious sound system, not a "micro" system. I've tried a Belkin audio cable connected to my headphone (audio out) jack but the sound is unacceptable. Is the Apple Universal dock or Apple AV connection kit the way to go or something else. I have a Denon receiver pumping out 7 x 110 watts per channel.

i think i have the same denon, it's a 3805. Don't have an answer to your question though.

  • Best possible movie sound.

    hi, everyone.
ok, so, like i said in my other post, i have an SB audigy 2zs platinum, with 7. speakers. I use my computers to play my movies, too. my question is, using this soundcard and speakers, and playing the dvd using powerDVD, how can i ensure that i'm getting the best possible sound? in other words, how can i be sure that the 5. is getting properly upmixed to 7. i'm a bit confused about how CMSS works, and when it takes the signal, etc.
    thanks!
    andy

    zap202,
If you have the Audigy 2 ZS series, you can configure the card decode the AC3 signal and map the remaining two channel from DVD 5. to either rear or side. Check this article.

Remember to have the PowerDVD application setup to SPDIF Passthrough or similar option.

  • Best non distorted sound

As someone with a degree in audio engineering I should prolly know the answer to this question, but can anyone give me some advice for the best possible sound with iTunes? I had a OK pair of Altec Lansing speakers for 5 years with my old G5. Now I have a new Macbook with a brand new pair of Logitech Z-2300s. I'm still get distortion now and then. All files are 128 ACC with error correction on encode. Any EQ setting or tips?

  • Best Slot for sound card

Hello.I have a simple question about my sound card.
I have Msi Z97 gaming 5 and Creative sound blaster z.My graphic card is N660 Gaming 2GD5/OC. I was wonder what is best PCI-X slot to add the card.
In the upper place or down?

personally I would use the upper x1 slot so the heat off the sound card isn't being pulled into the Graphics cards cooler increasing its temperature a little but that's just me.

  • Best workflow for sound editing

When I have finished working on a project in FCP and want to do some final tweaking to the sound mix, is it a better option to do that work in Soundtrack Pro or inside FCP?

You have more options for mixing/cleanup/mastering in Soundtrack Pro than you do in FCP. Here's an example:

  • Best USB gaming sound card

    Hello,
I own a shuttle sn26p SLI small form factor case. There is no room for a pci sound card. I am a big gamer and would like the EAX sound modes. I have heard bad things about the Audigy2 NX using tons of CPU power to emulate EAX 3 modes. Is there a newer usb sound card in theworks or should i suck it up and loose tons o' performance?Message Edited by lm_mario on 0-22-2005 06:09 PM

If you are willing to accept Firewire soundcards as well, I would suggest Apogee's Duet. I have it and could not be happier.
Did a bunch of reading in the "hifi forums" and seems like Apogee is a quality manufacturer and the components are high quality.

  • Best Bit Rate for Better sound

I’m new to the iTunes/iPod thing. A friend told me that he re-sets the bit rate from the default of 128 kpbs to the top of 320 kbps for better quality. [He plays everything off of his computer which is wired to speakers throughout his house and does not travel or drive much so hardly uses his iPod.] I played around a tad with the various rates on the same album and found that a fairly short one used 34.9 MB at 128 kbps, 52.1 MB at 192 kbps, 60.8 MB at 224 kbps and 86.6 MB at 340 kbps. Another friend told me that he noticed a big difference when he played a song off his iPod through his several thousand dollar system if it was imported at 128 kbps. While hard disc space is cheap and I would simply opt for the higher quality setting, the iPods are not so big when one almost triples the file size.
I tried to figure out what the max bit rates in the CDs are so that could guide the max import rate, but I could not and that question may make no sense at all anyway.
What is the max that a human can notice the difference at and what have folks found to be the best balance between sound quality and storage space?
    Thanks for your help.

Monty, this is really going to be up to your ears to decide. All I can tell you is my experience during the 2+ years of owning an iPod. I initially thought AAC @ 128 was satisfactory. I then started experimenting with various bitrates, but kept the AAC format. I decided that 192 was a discernible improvement over the 128. Not to go into a lot of detail, but I, quite by accident, had one album download at 256 & thought, "Wow, this is unbelievably better sound, even over inexpensive computer speakers." At that point, I started importing everything in AAC @ 256 VBR which I feel is pretty darn close to CD quality sound. I have a 60GB iPod that I'm willing to sacrifice some capacity in order to ensure the best audio quality I can. This is also why I do not buy frequently from the iTunes store as I do not feel the 128 downloads are the best quality. I buy & my own CD's, now, to insure good quality. I will by the occasional song from the store when I do not care to buy the whole CD. Hope this helps!

  • Best Compression To Use In QT For Saving Videos For DVD

I own a number of DVDs of compliation videos that I'm extracting each video using Cinematzie to create a library of videos clips. If I save a video without any compression, its alsmost the size of the entire DVD. But I also have a choice to save the video clip with compression but am given a large number of choices to select from. I would like to compress a video clips to the best quality and sound possible to eventually burn my own DVD of my favorites. Can someone who has worked with various compression software suggest the best one for me to use. Thanks.

I've has a lot of success with H.264 for the purpose you're speaking of if you're just archiving them to play back on the computer. If you want to output them to dvd to eventually play back on a conventional dvd and ntsc monitor, consider DV/DVC Pro. However, I've also read that H.264 is going to be the standard codec for some of the new HD DVDs (like BluRay).

  • Best output out of Logic Pro Technical Annlylist

Hi, we are currently running the Tascam Fw1884 mixer in one of our studios and wanted to know if there is a better alternative audio interface that can preview sounds from the application better.
We are running Mac G5 with Logic pro and use headphones from time to time to listen and create our mixes. So from the application (logic pro) to the Tascam Fw1884 to our headphones (Sennheiser 280 pro) to our ears, is this the best possible alternative output from the 1884 or should get something else?
I know there are many different mixers/audio interfaces on the market today but as far as getting "the best possible output sound from the application" is there any additional equipment upgrades we should explore or update to?
our connection from the fw is monster cabel firewire.
please let us know your technical analyst.
    cheers

    Hi,
What, specifically, is wrong or lacking in your current setup?
Monitoring on headphones on pretty much any interface will yield about the same results. Changing an interface to go on headphones again on the next one is not exactly a good idea. It is akin to changing your old VW car to a Ferrari, only to keep driving at 25mph. In other words, a total waste of money.
So, here goes yet another answer of "no you don't need to"...
    Cheers

  • Bass Sounds---Stereo to Mono

I've been using GB3 now for a week and I created some nice stuff but there was a problem with this one track and I didn't realize what was bugging me about it until I realized that the Bass sounds are in Stereo (at least all the sub synths i was using). Like, it's excited between both speakers. I tried using the Izotope Vinyl plug-in (Free @ Izotope.com), putting it in Mono but then like every 25 seconds the bass will slowlyl go out of phase and then get in phase.
Any suggestions based on anyone's experience to get these bass sounds in Mono? Or does anyone know which are the best mono bass sounds? (I'm a lil lazy--LOL)
    Thanks GB Fam!!!

    HangTime,
I went and downloaded both wiretap and monomaker and they both fixed my problems-----especially the monomaker!!! I gotta give it you man cause I had no idea how I was gonna resolve that bass to become mono and not phase out or move to one side----Monomaker is amazing--it completely did the trick.
I used it with Roger Nichol's Inspector plug-in (free also in case you don't know about it--Roger Nichols.com i think--or just google it) to check to make sure that the bass wasn't moving a fraction to either side-Everything looked and sounded perfect!
Thank you----Much luck in all your endeavors!!

  • Best Quality Importing

I am a high-end audio user and would like to know which format should I use to import my high resolution CDs. I shunned MP3 players for a long time because I was told they truncate files to fit and that ultimately sounds horrible upon playback on a killer audio system such as the Levinson I use.
I read "iTunes help" but am still not sure which format (AIFF, WAV, AAC, Apple Lossless) to use for the best reproduced, uncompromised sound. I'm not concerned with disc space as I am with sound. I imported using AAC and I could hear on my car audio system that the bass was bloated and the treble dry. It sucked and that was in my truck using only its decent stock system.
Taking the advice of an Apple salesman, I re-imported a known recording using a WAV format and it was so much better but still not the same as an actual CD in depth and dynamics. (I did a comparo in my truck using the iPod and my CD player). Something is not right here.
Could it be the cable connection to my iPod as I am using the headphone jack to my car audio AUX input? Would using the iPod's docking connection on its bottom to the back of the radio clear this up? I get conflicting advice at the Apple store and a vague answer using iTunes "help."
After using MIT cable for many years, I know cables and their connections make a big difference in sound but at the iPod's level, would this matter?
I don't want to use a custom setting where the computer will add or subtract any info from the recording. I want all of what's on the disc to end up on the iPod, no more no less. I want to get this right before I import the thousand's of songs I have in my library. It would be a drag to have to do it all over again as my Powerbook is as slow as a snail and it is cranky too.

I developed an ear for sound for the years I have been listening. When I fire up my home audio system, there is nothing but smoothness, effortlessness, wide and deep soundstaging, good micro and macro dynamics etc. All combine to a relaxing and involving exerience which becomes mroe obvious after I listening to my iPod.
I have read the compelling arguments for and against certain formats and on paper it might mean they should pass the music on w/o degrading or changing it. I use my ear as a guide. The iPod sounds cupped or hollow. Years ago jitter was the big problem in audio until FIFO (First In First Out) was developed by Levinson. I found that leaving the CD as it is w/o introducing any anomaly upon playback is key. I finesse the cables and components later until it sounds "there."
A few years ago I read an article in Stereophile about a test of the iPod's settings for recording and playback, exactly what we are discussing here. Unfortunately, I cannot remember what settings they recommended but they felt the unit came close to really good sound. It's low price relative to the hideously expensive high end market, compelled the reviewer to give the iPod a higher rating and a recommendation. The reviewer largely used his acute sense of hearing for his critique and compared his results to known equipment in A/B testing. Again I cannot recall what cables and connection he chose, but the iPod has improved since then and so has iTunes software which I felt would solidify my purchase decision toward MP3s.
I went to the Alpine website and found they do not have a cable to support the data link port in the new Classic. So for now, I have to deal with the trippy sounding recordings if the cable is the culprit.
The older the CD medium gets, the more it seems to hold up to newer technologies such as what is inside an iPod. This is ironic because the CD was never originally designed to sound amazing, just to be more convenient over LP. Today, it really does sound good for its paltry 16/44. When I can get them, I purchase only labels like "Telarc" and "Chesky" etc., who are fanatical about the recording process and it really pays off with great sound. That's what I want in my iPod.
It's taken 20+ years to get the big companies to come up with a better sounding disc and I hope not another 20 to fix the iPod.
