BI THread : Data modelling

Hi Experts,
I have been doing Data modelling since one month, I would like to know more about it. I would like know to what are the Does and Dont's for Data modelling in BI. what are the key points that should be remebered while doing the data modelling in BI & also how more effectively the data modelling can be done and are there any new approaches for doing data modelling in BI 7.0.
kindly advise.
thanks & regards,
M.S

Hi M.S,
First to do effective modelling first you need to concentrate two things.
1. Load Performance
2. Query Performnce.
Load Performnce :
It will be based your Design DSO , Cube ETC............
      Ex : You to thing how many DSO or cubes  that needs to be developed?
Query Performace :
How much time time is taking for executing the Queries.
To increase the performnce you need to think about the facilities provided by SAP.
Ex : Multi Provides,BW Statatics, Info sets  etc.............
Some More Info :

                    );Column level constraints are NOT DEFERRABLE in DDL Preview. Also after merge to a model they are in physical model not deferrable. As in my earlier foreign key thread Data Modeler 3.0 EA1: Import deferrable foreign key
    Table level constraints are imported deferrable.

    Hi Rafu,
    EA2 is available and those DEFERRABLE problems are sorted out there.

  • Data Modeler still hangs

    Hi,
    since the first thread 'Data Modeler hangs' is marked as answered. I try a new one. I still had this problem that modeler hangs when trying to open or save a file.
    I played around and found following solution which works for me :
    Download data modeler with JRE and install it. If the modeler hangs when trying to open a file, edit datamodeler.conf file and set javahome manually e.g.:
    SetJavaHome C:\Program Files\OSDM2.0\datamodeler\jdk
    It seems, that the standard setting during installation for JavaHome does not work under all circumstances.
    I am on Windows XP SP3 on a locked down PC
    Regards
    Ernst

    Thanks for the help Ivan & Philip - made the change to 4GB RAM in the conf file but that did not solve the problem.
    Process
    1. Open view properties
    2. Click Test Query button - works fine
    3. Click Query button to edit query. Query builder never opens - monitor shows 100+ % CPU. Have to do force quit to close.
    Reverse - same thing
    1. Edit query 1st - no problem
    2. Test query - after db connection dialog - the test never execute. 100+% CPU again.
    I can edit as many view queries as I want and it works fine.
    or
    I can Test as many queries as I want - no problem
    When I try to do both on the SAME view - then I get trouble.
    Seems like an issue in the view edit dialog (only on Mac - never had the issue on a PC)
    FYI - I am on 64 bit Java.

  • Excel Workbook with Excel Data Model stored on SharePoint - daily refresh

    I'm not sure if this is exactly the right forum but I'm hoping that someone here can either answer or point me in the right direction.
    I have an Excel Workbook with an Excel Data Model.
    The Excel Data Model uses SQL to contact our data warehouse and pull through data into tables.
    We are storing the Workbook on a SharePoint site and viewing it using Excel Services.
    The data in our data warehouse is updated daily and so I would like to refresh the workbook daily and remove the option to refresh the data in the browser.
    Is this possible with a workbook that has an Excel Data Model (I've seen lots of posts that relate to workbooks with connections to tabular models).
    Thanks
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
    I have answered this issue in this thread that you posted in SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint forum, please see:
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/9627939c-e9f1-48ae-a6ed-0c238d8f2d69/excel-workbook-with-excel-data-model-stored-on-sharepoint-daily-refresh?forum=sqlkjpowerpointforsharepoint
    Furthermore, this issue is more related to PowerPivot for SharePoint. If you have any more questions about PowerPivot for SharePoint, I would sugget you open a new thread in the forum below for better support:

  • Data Refresh Error: We cannot locate a server to load the workbook Data Model.

    Hello,
    Recently I have developed a PowerBI Report using Excel Workbook with external data source. It refreshes successfully for some days and then starts throwing error on every scheduled refresh as "We cannot locate a server to load the workbook Data
    Model."
    The workaround solution is to restart the application server which has SQL Server Power Pivot Services Installed which will again work for some more days and again start throwing error.
    So, I am looking for permanent fix for it.
    Following are additional details about our SP Farm:
    No. of front end servers: 2, Application servers:2, DB servers 2 with windows fail over cluster.
    PowerPivot Server is installed and configured from App 2 server.

    Hi ibrahim,
    Please try to do the following steps:
    1. Install "1033\x64\SQLSERVER2008_ASADOMD10.msi" from
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26728
    2. In the Application Management section of the Central Administration home page, click Manage service applications.
    On the Manage Service Applications page, click the Excel Services service application that you want to configure.
    On the Manage Excel Services page, click Data Model.Click Add Server.
    In the Server Name box, type the name of the Analysis Services instance that you want to add.

  • Data model: single quote in default parameter value

    Hello,
    when I assign a default value to a parameter in my Data model, which includes a single quote (i.e. "It's a default value"), then the single quote is escaped with a backslash (i.e. "It\'s a default value") when I open the report associated with the data model. How can I get rid of the escape character when opening a report?
    Regards,
    Jure

    Hi Yogini,
    Thanks for your reply.
    When the customer name is selected, discoverer reports automatically enclose the customer names in single quotes. like 'ABC LTD', 'ABC's INC',
    I know how to change this single quote format. Also we don't want user to change the parameter selection criteria once selected.
    Also related to double quotes isn't it doubles are treated as column names in the SQL query and can not be used for any other purpose.
    Apologies, I haven't tried this but I think it will not work. Have you tried this with discoverer viewer.
    As mentioned intrusting things is when a customer name with single quote is selected in discoverer Plus it automatically formats the filter criteria to look like ['ABC LTD', 'ABC''s INC'] but this thing doesn't happen in viewer.
    I think this is a bug in discoverer viewer and think there must be some patch available to correct this problem.
    Sorry, don't have a solution yet but will certainly update the thread once I get the solution.
    Also please keep looking for a solution and let me know as well.
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Best Regards,
    Manish

    Hi,
    the problem seems to be caused by an invalid query
    selectobject (product) from Products product where product.PROD_ID = :prodId
    Should be
    select object (product) from Products product where product.PROD_ID = :prodId
    Please check the query you created in TopLink

  • Error when creating data model - Internal Server Error

    When trying to create a new Data Model in BI Publisher (11.1.1), we are getting a “Internal Server Error” message and the page to create data models wont display. We are able to login to BIP with any user, but we cant do anything else… (seems due to a null pointer exception, as shown in this message):
    +[ServletContext@605092857[app:bipublisher module:xmlpserver path:/xmlpserver spec-version:2.5 version:11.1.1]] Servlet failed with Exception+
    java.lang.NullPointerException
    We’ve examined bipublisher.log and we get several warnings:
    Component: AdminServer
    Module: oracle.xdo
    Message: SawUtil.setUserHome - Unable to lookup user home: weblogic
    Component: AdminServer
    Module: oracle.xdo
    Message: java.rmi.RemoteException:  access denied for user to path /users/weblogic.; nested exception
    Then, we get this errors in sawlog0.log:

    This same error repeats for files webcatalogsoaphandler.cpp and localwebcatalog.cpp.
    Access to SOAP is explicity granted to BISystemUser (via Manage Privileges ) and we haven’t changed any security policies…
    Any ideas why this is happening and how to solve it?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler 3.0 Bugs, Resolution and workarounds

    The purpose of this thread is to list bugs discovered while using ORACLE SQL Developer Data Modeler 3.0
    Mainly with SQL SERVER 2005 and ORACLE 10g models.

    SQL Server Physical model doesn't save table identity column.
    here are the steps to get this bug:
    1. create a table in relational model with a column as an integer to be used as an identity.
    2. create or open a physical model for SQL-SERVER 2005
    3. open the table in the physical model
    4. edit the integer column property dialog
    5. tick the identity check box and close the property dialog
    6. save the model and close it
    7. open it again, you will find the identity check is removed! (probably not saved from the start)

  • Can SAP leverage MM and classification (CL-system) data-model?

    Dear all,
    At the moment I’m working for a telecom company, setting up the Functional Management department activities to manage 2nd line support calls, and general overall application functional support.
    One of the issues is simplifying the work of monitoring Item (products, articles etc.) Master Data. Below you can see the data model where Items, their classes, the characteristics of classes and prices are stored.
    The Legacy system has the following data-model (as ERD, <a href="http://sapparking2007.freehostia.com/LegacyModel.JPG">LegacyModel</a> )
    Main Product (i.e. Nokia 6110)
         - has zero, one or more Characteristics (i.e. 220v cord, 3v battery etc.)
         - has zero, one or more Variants (i.e. Nokia 6110i,  Black, Red etc.)
         A Variant  (Nokia 6110i, Black)
              - has zero, one or more Characteristics (i.e. 200h stand by time etc.)
              - has zero, one or more Deliveries (i.e. we sell “a package”)
              A Delivery (certain combination of a package : Nokia 6110i, Red, Prepaid, 1 year)
                   - Has zero, one or more Characteristics (i.e. prepaid simcard, free service etc.)
                   - Has zero, one or more Delivery Prices (i.e. prices)
                   A Delivery Price
                        - Has zero, one or more Characteristics (i.e. 1 month warenty)
                        - Has zero, one or more Prices (i.e. offer price, sales, periods)
    Well, almost perfectly normalised data-model.
    The implementation in SAP is as follows:
    Main Products , Variant and Deliveries are all stored in table MARA.
    Product is Artikeltype Z01A,
    Variant is type KMAT,
    Deliveries is type HAVA and DIEN.
    See image:
    <a href="http://sapparking2007.freehostia.com/Model01.JPG">Current Data Model</a>
    The Characteristics are stored in table CABN etc…
    The prices are stored in the SD table KONP .. (price condition). etc.
    The MARA table is connected to Classes table (KSSK) via the INOB table.
    Classes are connected to Classes with in de KSSK table.
    The filed that stores Class in the KSSK and the field that stores the Class below are 2 different type of fields (18C , and 50CN)  and they would simply wont join in a SAP query.
    The filed that stores Item to Class in the INOB and the field that stores the Class in the KSSK are 2 different type of fields (18C , and 50CN)  and they would also wont join in a SAP query.
    Therefore we have created extra Z. “Tables” (Types actually) that does the join for us.
    Functional Management personnel – are not ABAP and SQL people. So we have to keep it simple.
    After a training session – it proved to be still too complicated. After a Change Request, to create the product structure in a separated, single table, has resulted in a batch job, that create the file periodically, but not all of it. And – at the end, you never know if your data is up-to-date.
    To me it seems logical – to add a (derived) field to the KSSK and the INOB to accumulate the underlying class with the same attributes as the MARA and KSSK, so it can be properly joined. But here there is too much resistant in conjunction with SAP releases etc. AND it seem to be impossible (not sure) to define a “type table” with a derived field.
    To let programmers produce more ABAP is not a clean option either, and yes I realise one can create a sap query on a single table, and add a long SQL statement on Record level.
    So the question:
    -     Is this implementation “the best” possible in SAP?
    -     How to overcome the “unjoinable” friendly database?
    In other query tools it is possible to create “tables” as output (on the fly), where the tables can be used as input tables in a next query, and can be joined further.
    -     Is this somehow possible in SAP?
    I wonder if anyone can shade some light on this approach. We have 2 FTE to monitor 2.5 million products combinations, and the propagation of this data to over 30 sales channels – daily.
    Thank you in advance for taking the time!
    Kind Regards,
    Doron.

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler suggestions

    Not sure where to post this (unable to connect to the blog from work due to network restrictions), hope this is the correct forum.
    I am testing out the Data Modeler product. I've got a large database that I want to reverse engineer, then work with the resulting model. I used the import feature which successfully imported all 1849 tables from my schema. However, this created a diagram which wasn't really useful. A couple of things I believe would be useful.
    1. Add better connectivity between the browser that shows the table listing and the diagram. When I click on a table, I'd like the corresponding element in the diagram to be highlighted (and vice-versa). Also, an option to have the diagram show that table would be useful (maybe a ctrl-click or shift-click).
    2. Subviews - I don't see an easy way to add to a subview once it is created. So, add an option to the browser and diagram right-click menu to "Add to SubDiagram". Currently the diagram allows you to create a subdiagram, I didn't see an add option.
    3. More keyboard shortcuts. Specifically, CTRL-Z to undo, CTRL-Y to repeat.
    4. Defined column types. You've got naming rules, but I'd like to be able to define columns as a predefined type, like "Dollar Amount", which would make my column become a number(9.2) or something like that.
    That's it for now - may be more to come.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the feedback. Most of these are in the product:
    +1. Add better connectivity between the browser that shows the table listing and the diagram. When I click on a table, I'd like the corresponding element in the diagram to be highlighted (and vice-versa). Also, an option to have the diagram show that table would be useful (maybe a ctrl-click or shift-click).+
    Go to Tools > General Options: Select Diagram and check the synchronize with tree option.
    +2. Subviews - I don't see an easy way to add to a subview once it is created. So, add an option to the browser and diagram right-click menu to "Add to SubDiagram". Currently the diagram allows you to create a subdiagram, I didn't see an add option.+
    There are threads in the forum about subviews and you can look at the demos available online on the [Data Modeler|http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/datamodeler/index.html] page - we'll be adding more, but the import from Data Dictionary demo talks about subviews.
    In short, select a few objects, right-click and create subview from selected, or right-click on the subview node in the browser and select new subview, and then drag the tables you want onto the new diagram.
    +3. More keyboard shortcuts. Specifically, CTRL-Z to undo, CTRL-Y to repeat.+
    We will be adding more shortcut keys.
    +4. Defined column types. You've got naming rules, but I'd like to be able to define columns as a predefined type, like "Dollar Amount", which would make my column become a number(9.2) or something like that.+
    These are Domains. Select Tools > Domains Administration, and add your domains.
    I'm working on adding short demos for all these features and we'll build these up over time.

  • How can I find out what is causing this error in SQL Developer Data Modeler

    Friends,
    I am trying to import entities into into SQL Developer Data Modeler from Oracle Designer 10.1.2.3.
    In case of need I perform these steps to perform the import:
    File --> Import --> Oracle Designer Model --> Select database connection --> Select work area --> select application system --> select one entity --> Click finish --> Import starts
    During the import process I see an alert dialog box with the message:
    There are errors in import - check Log file Clicking Ok dismisses the alert box and I see the following summary screen:
    Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler Version: 2.0.0 Build: 584
    Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler Import Log
    Date and Time: 2010-08-09 14:27:26

              Imported Statements:      32
              Failed Statements:           0
              Not Recognized Statements:      0The Entity is then displayed in the Logical View within SQL Developer Data Modeler.
    Upon checking the log file I see the following entry:
    2010-08-09 13:50:34,025 [Thread-11] ERROR ODExtractionHandler - Error during import from Designer Repository

         at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:619)Can anyone shed any light on this error?
    Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

    No this helps a lot. It's not strange. Firstly, in a versioned repository you should see Private Workareas and Shared workareas, so your workarea may be in either of these. It won't be in the Global Shared Workarea, as this only for non-versioned repositories. (I like to open the RON by selecting the full Repository, that way I can see the private and shared worlareas and the configuration and containers all in the same tree.
    Now your workarea is defined by a set of rules, so when you expand the workarea in the RON, and select the object, then that's the workarea and object you'll see in the import dialog in the Data Modeler. So if you check it out and check it back in, and can't see it in the RON, then the rule is not seeing this object. (Did you refresh the workarea in the RON?) If you can't see it in the RON, you can't see it in the Data Modeler. If you're working in a versioned repository, you need to work in the specific work area, i.e V27 and this is what you need to select in the Data Modeler.
    It looks like you are selecting the wrong workarea in the Data Modeler.

  • Invalid Name Pattern in SQL Developer Data Modeler

    I am using Data Modeler version 3.3.0.747, I have exported a couple of data models (logical and physical) to an Oracle 11.2.0.3 database. I used the Reporting_Schema_Permissions.sql file to define the ID that owns the repository. Each data model that I exported returned the successful export message.
    However when I use Oracle Data Modeler and connect (as a different user) to the repository to generate a report on one of the diagrams I immediately get an error returned. The error is (from the log file in datamodeler\log\datamodeler.log):
    2013-04-19 08:36:12,233 [Thread-18] ERROR ReportsGenerationDialog - Generating report from Reporting Schema exception - invalid name pattern: username.OBJECTS_LIST
    Where username is the name of the ID being used to generate the report (not the repository owner ID).
    I have created public synonyms on the repository tables and views (though I must have missed where that was a requirement) so the repository objects can be seen by other users.
    Has anyone encountered this and if so how did you resolve it. I have searched the web (and the Oracle forums) and so far had no hits on this issue. That seems to indicate that there is something I must have missed in the setup or such.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    I think you didn't grant EXECUTE to package and types. Here is full working script:
    DECLARE
    CURSOR cur IS SELECT table_name, owner FROM all_tables WHERE owner='<owner>';
    BEGIN
    FOR rec IN cur LOOP
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'GRANT SELECT ON '||'<owner>'||'.'||rec.table_name||' to '||'<another_user>';
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'CREATE SYNONYM '||'<another_user>'||'.'||rec.table_name||' FOR '||'<owner>'||'.'||rec.table_name;
    END LOOP;
    END;
    DECLARE
    CURSOR cur IS SELECT view_name FROM all_views WHERE owner='<owner>';
    BEGIN
    FOR rec IN cur LOOP
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'GRANT SELECT ON '||'<owner>'||'.'||rec.view_name||' to '||'<another_user>';
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'CREATE SYNONYM '||'<another_user>'||'.'||rec.view_name||' FOR '||'<owner>'||'.'||rec.view_name;
    END LOOP;
    END;
    DECLARE
    CURSOR cur IS SELECT type_name FROM all_types WHERE owner='<owner>';
    BEGIN
    FOR rec IN cur LOOP
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'GRANT EXECUTE ON '||'<owner>'||'.'||rec.type_name||' to '||'<another_user>';
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'CREATE SYNONYM '||'<another_user>'||'.'||rec.type_name||' FOR '||'<owner>'||'.'||rec.type_name;
    END LOOP;
    END;
    GRANT EXECUTE ON <owner>.pkg_osdm_utils to <another_user>;
    CREATE SYNONYM <another_user>.pkg_osdm_utils FOR <owner>.pkg_osdm_utils;
    There is no document for reporting repository install process. If you are exporting design for first time, the repository is automatically created for you.
    When you get new version of DM you can
    1. Use new repository
    2. Upgrade existing one. If so, the simplest variant is to run /datamodeler/reports/DMRS_Upgrade_Script_<latest_vesrion>. Eventually compile single stored procedure.
    Another variant for upgrade is with running osddm_upgr.sql, but there is some error, which is going to be fixed in the next release.

  • SQL Data Modeler - Startup Problem

    Hi
    I've created a Relational Model with Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler, with a few tables, and everything was working ok.
    Yesterday I made some changes to the model, added columns and another table, saved the model and closed the Data Modeler.
    Today - when I tried to open the Model, I only get an error "Some objects are not loaded correctly. See the log file for details"
    The log at the bottom of the Data Modeler only shows: "Open Design: "nameof model"" and no details of what went wrong. No other details is provided, and as far as i can see - and now I can't view the model at all.
    Any ideas how to find the problem/ fix it in order to get the created Model back?
    Thanks
    Coenraad

    Hi Philip
    Thanks, I found the log file there. I have cleared the log file, and when I tried to open the model again, it created the below information, any ideas what could be wrong?
