Black Rectangular Box?

An interesting thing just started happening today on my macbook. Now whenever I highlight an item (desktop items or text boxes in any application) a black rectangular box encases the item. For example, the text box I am using to write this post is now enclosed in the black box, and when I highlight the Macintosh HD icon on the desktop, the black box moves to the icon; when I play a song in itunes, the box encloses the entire library, but when I highlight the sidebar, the sidebar then becomes enclosed with the box.
On a side note, I also have noticed that under the "Apple" icon of the menu bar, the options for "Restart," "Shutdown," and "Log out" appear TWICE. For example:
Sleep
Restart...
Restart
Shutdown...
Shutdown
Log out...
Log out
Any suggestions?

Many thanks. This happened to me this morning. I was frantic and didn't want to go back to the Apple Store since I've been there 4 times in the past 6 months (for various issues). This was a quick and easy fix.

    Here we go,
    1) at login a black rectangular box with white text appears and voice over seems to be on (even though its switched off)
    2) after login an annoying black square surrounds the cursor
    3) upon waking computer from sleep the bluetooth doesn't pair with the keyboard or mouse (I usually just power them both off and then back on and this seems to work)
    4) the dock disappears and reappears on its own even though "hide the dock" is not checked

In the login screen, press the key combination command-F5 to deactivate VoiceOver.

  • Black Rectangular Box @ Startup

Hello, a friend recently got an imac with Lion and now at boot up a black rectangular box appearswith gray borders and follows her around reporting (computer voice) on various things and even scrolls through various things.  I'm getting this second hand and trying to help them out.  I'm wondering if it could be something she might have selected in System Preferences in Universal Access or maybe a dashboard widget?  They've said they've trided to click on it to delete but cant. And when they try to type something in the search box it get's in the way.  Sounds very strange to me.
    Thanks for any hints.

Thanks Niel, thought it might be something related to that.  I'll let them know.  I bet it was one of those click happy things and didn't know what they did.

  • IMac Tiger 10.4.8 Bugs - Black Rectangular Outline?!

My wife just purchased a new iMac (2ghz 17 inch) a couple of days ago from the Mac Store. It has factory installed Tiger 10.4.8. There seems to be a strange, quirky feature that almost looks deliberate, but doesn't quite function that way. I have an earlier version of Tiger on my laptop so this quirk is not familiar to me: Occasionally a black, rectangular box appears around the button, or specific part of a page. It is not isolated to any single piece of software, but seems to be endemic to the operating system, though it seems to occur randomly. The squares sometimes linger, and other times disappear. I would have guessed they were highlighting your previous command or selection. It looks like a selection rectangle that surrounds a specific selection. They come in various sizes, and there is always just ONE single rectangle, never more than one, which makes me think it has something to do with selection. We've upgraded all the critical software, and did a current firmware update, which went smoothly. The rectangles are still showing up on occasion. Anyone know what might be going on?
Thanks in advance for any input.

Hi, MacJax. Welcome to the Discussions.
If you are seeing a black rectangle appearing around interface objects such as buttons, fields, and others this indicates you have enabled VoiceOver. This rectangle is known as the VoiceOver Cursor.
VoiceOver also duplicates certain items in the Apple menu: see "Mac OS X 10.4: Some Apple menu items appear twice."
if you do not need VoiceOver, turn it off using one of the following methods:
    • Press Command-F5
    • In the System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing tab.
If you need VoiceOver but do not want to see the rectangle, deselect VoiceOver Cursor in the Display tab of the VoiceOver Utility. The VoiceOver Utility is located in the Applications > Utilities folder.

  • How to remove a black border box that continously tabs to each field automatically till end of web page; restarts to top of page, cannot stop this box. Scroll bar cannot controlled with mouse, returns auto to top of scroll slide, never remaining at bottom

how to remove a black border box that continously tabs to each field automatically till end of web page; restarts to top of page, cannot stop this box. Scroll bar cannot be controlled with mouse, scroll bar returns automatically to the top of scroll slide every time I move the bar to the bottom of the scale.  Also, there's a rectangular text box (with black background and white text) that is always on the desktop that emulates a typed text, HTML, or cmd function.

The first two problems (box cycling from element to element on page, scroll bar returning to top) can be caused by a stuck (or defective) Tab key on the keyboard. Such damage can be caused by a liquid spill; just one tiny droplet is enough to short a wafer switch under one key.
The last issue (black box, white text - sounds sorta like a debugger window) I haven't seen, but could be caused by something similar.
To check for that, try using a different keyboard. If you're using a wireless keyboard, turn it off and see if the oddities stop.

  • Text put into a canvas element with context.fillText() always has a black box where each letter goes. If the text is black you just see the black rectangle. If the text is not black you see it on the black bounding box. Surely this is not right.

This has happened on the last few versions of firefox, as long as canvas has been supported. I see other people's screen shots from canvas tutorials, and the text always looks normal. On my system, any text put into a canvas element via context.fillText() will have a black bounding box for each letter, sized appropriately for the letter. If the text is black, of course you only see rectangles. If the text is a contrasting color, then you can read it, but it looks bizarre.

    Thomas...same kind of crap here.
I used Custom Text - entered a sentence, hit return, entered another.
    Set to 72 pt.
The default alignment is centred - I want left aligned text...the text start point stays at the centre of frame and the sentence runs off the edge of the bounding box.
There is no settings in the Text or Title inspector dialog to correct that!
Using Transform will not sort it!

I have a UK apple mac and im trying to use mirroring so when searching google, ebay, writting document it shows up on my tv but i dont have the option of 'Mirroring' when i click on the rectangular box in lower right hand corner. Anyone have advice on how I can do this?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). It also requires the computer to be using wi-fi.
    Do you meet these requirements.

  • I have a black dialog box on my display that I cannot get rid of. It displays text of whatever I am in, apps, docs, etc, and I have been unable to get rid of it.

I have a black dialog box on my display that I cannot get rid of. I was cleaning my keyboard and must have hit some combination of keys that caused it. It shows text announcing everything I open on the display or am looking at. Can anyone help me turn this off? Thanks.

    Hi there francone,
It sounds like you may have the Picture-in-Picture Zoom option enabled. Take a look at the article below for more information as well as how to disable it.

  • Black Bounding Box Appearing on my screen.. driving me mad!

    Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me. Somehow I have managed to get this black bounding box to appear n anything that I select. I don't know how I did it, my only guess is that some keyboard shortcut backfired on me!
It wouldn't be such a big deal except when I'm working in Quark, I keep getting a huge box the length of my screen appearing and its in my waywhen I'm trying to work. I guess its a finder feature somewhere in settings but for the life of me, I just can't find it.
I would be very grateful if someone could help me.
    Thanks,
    Joni

Did you turn the Universal Access Voice Over on? (cmd-F5 toggles it.)
You can go to Universal Access in System Preferences and check the 'off' radio button too.

  • IMac/OS x version 10.6.8 My cursor is in imprisoned in a black rectangular triangle.

My IMac / OSx version 10.6.8 has developed a very bothersome black rectangular picture frame which has trapped my curser arrow inside
its framework. My curser reponds properly to commands from the mouse, but unfortunately the cursor must drag this pictureframe entrapment as it moves around my screen. Please tell me how to eliminate this this annoying black rectangle and free my curser for normal movement without pushing the frame everywhere it goes. Thanks

  • Why do these black letter box borders appear?

Hi, I created a stop motion AVI file which I imported into Sony Vegas and then exported into PhotoShop. When I export from Sony Vegas into photo shop, thses black letter box edges appear on the video file, as seen on the lefthand image.
If anyone could tell me what they are and how to get rid of them, I'd be very grateful.
    Thanks,
    Chris

You know you're posting in the forum for FrameMaker publishing software,
right, not a Photoshop or video forum? To it's not really the right
    audience.
That said, it looks to me as if your image is a 4x3 aspect ratio video set
into a 16x9 canvas -- the black boxes are the dead area in which you don't
have an image. To fix it, correct the size of the canvas or frame size to
    match the video images.

  • Laughing sound, media keys funny, and black select boxes

I've only had my macbook for 2 weeks and its gone weird today. It starts with a black select box around icons, popup windows, and the task bar. Then i try to listen to the new mac holiday add when i hear weird laughing. Then the laughing starts when i click on something, anything. I try to turn down the volume with the media key (F12) then dashboard comes in. The contrast keys dont work, and F11 makes firefox browser move to the top right of the screen out of view.
HELP ME i am in mac ****.

    Hi Doug,
Thank you for your help. I have done some more problem solving and I found something strange in the activity monitor. So i 'quit the process' and shut down. Its all fixed now.

  • Black Bounding box?

I just upgraded from CS3 to CS6. I hate this big black bounding box I am now working inside of. Makes it much harder to Command-zero an image up to full screen size, and Also I haven't been able to figure out how to bring 2 images up together, so I can see them both. To clone stamp one to the other for instance. How do I get rid of th big black box?

Which OS. Floating windows or tabbed editing. There is also a sight difference between how on a PC perhaps Mac too how Command+0 works on CS6 as compared to previous versions of Photoshop. I think right now you seeing tabbed editing for the first time.
