Black screen on starting up in OSX, problems shutting down in XP.
Hi there.
I have a 2-month old iMac with Bootcamp and Win XP installed. It ran OK for a while, but Bootcamp has started behaving erratically. I did postst this in the Bootcamp part of discussions, but have come to the decision that it is not a Bootcamp issue.
If I restart holding down the 'alt' key to bring up the Mac HDD or Bootcamp startup choice, when the screen comes up, it really chugs. The mouse moves once every second, and I cant actually choose the Bootcamp drive. I click on it, double click, etc, and nothing happens. I hit the power button to reset, and it eventually (after literally a few minutes) starts up in XP.
Once XP has started, it runs OK, perfectly fluid. But when I have finished, I try to re-start into OSX. I choose 'Shut down, and nothing happens. I choose 'shut down' a second time, and it turns off almost instantly, but when I restart the mac, I get the startup chime but nothing on screen at all – totally blank.
I tried restarting loads of times, but nothing worked. Eventually I unplugged it for a couple of minutes, started off my system disk, reselected the iMac HDD as the startup disk, and it restarted in OSX fine.
This whole episode really scared me, so I really want to stop it from happening again.
I have some ideas of what might have caused it, but need someone with a better brain than mine to troubleshoot my logic. Here are my thoughts.
1) Bootcamp in itself just facilitates the installation of windows and auto-installation of hardware drivers, etc. Once Windows is installed and working, Bootcamp has really finished it's job.
2) the 'holding Alt at startup' thing is an OSX thing (not Bootcamp specific). I reckon 1 & 2 together logically rule out Bootcamp the app as the problem.
3) The actual OSs and apps in either partition actually work fine once the rigmarole of changing from one to the other is done. So the problem isn't in apps or high-up in the OS.
4) Is it therefore a start-up/shutdown issue, present when either entering or exiting both partitions? As it's both partitions, could it be OS-independent as well?
This leaves hardware. Could corrupt P-Ram settings cause this (if it's still called P-Ram – I originally started using macs back in the days of MacOS 8.6). I'm guessing that the unplugging might have cleared the PMU, as sticking a reset button on the M/B inside an iMac would be pretty bad design.
Any thoughts?
It was the PRAM.

I am wondering if your hard drive is failing? You might try downloading and running SMART Utility on it:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It is somewhat more critical than Disk Utility, and may give you earlier warning of impending drive failure.
You might also want to run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test and see if you get any error codes.
From the way your hard drive is behaving, it sounds to me like there is something wrong with it. Since reinstalling the OS doesn't solve anything, you are likely dealing with some sort of a hardware issue.

My Mac Pro is acting up.
If I do a reset after its beenruning for a period of time I get a black screen at start up. I have tried multiple different monitor cables and nothing seems to work. It does seem to resart and I can here the start up chime but no display. If I unplug the machine and let cool for 1/2 ~ 1 hour it then turns back on with no problem.
Processor 3.33 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
Memory 24 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)
Display is the 27 inch cinema
Any ideas? Bad graphics card?AC if you used it this once would pay for itself. Same for a good solid UPS - a good one can stop that 1/100,000 surge that takes out a modem (if you filter of course).
I've known people that never knew you could filter coax cable or dsl and we get enough severe storms it has been, not if it happens, but when.
Unlike the X1900 which had a air chamber and would cause clogging you really should not need to and be pulling it out to clean dust all that much if at all.
People have gone through 2 or 3 ATI 5770s and some 5870s due to what are probably design or bad batches especially the first months run. -
NB 305 black screen on start up
My NB305N410BL displays a black screen on start up. It had worked fine the prior night. You can hear the "beeps" for the start page but no mouse or image ever. Any ideas on the problem? Thanks, Karen
Try this, disconnect the battery and charger. Hold the power button for 15 seconds and reconnect everything and turn on the computer...hopefully this helps you fix the issue...

I have a black screen at start up on my MacBook Pro. I installed Lion and it worked fine.

@tjk Thanks! My mother-in-law (also named Barbara, ironically) started having this issue this morning, so I've been looking into this. It seems to be a fairly widespread problem which makes me think that Lion (10.7.x) has exacerbated some issue with the card that may have already been in place. from everything I've seen, its a display-only issue (no data corruption, unless you force reboot). Still very frustrating for folks though.
Actually, thank you! I'd probably still be beating my head against the wall. That did ring a bell with another link I had stored: http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/08/buggy-nvidia-drivers-giving-2010-macbo ok-pro-owners-lion-upgrade-headaches.ars
Don't know if it's related or not (and don't have the inclination to read all of them right now), but there it is. Will stay tuned for any new info. Again, good work and thanks! -
Macbook pro-Freezes with black screen at start up.
Macbook pro-Freezes with black screen at start up. I've tried inserting the Mac OS X install disc to run the hardware test(Restart and hold down D), But it still does nothing. Just the black screen. Now I can't get the disc out. I've tried holding down the track pad key upon start up but that doesn't work neither.
What do I do??? Please help.Remove the battery to find your serial number in the battery bay. Then you can look your MBP up on EveryMac.com:
http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
That will give you all the information on your Mac.
This is assuming that you have the MBP with the removable battery and not the unibody. The unibody has different graphic chips.
Good luck!

MacBook Pro 2006 black screen on start up
Time to take a trip to the Apple store genius bar for a free diagnosis. It could be a faulty GPU, faulty display or a bad display connection.

I am having problems shutting down my MacBook Pro. I go to the apple and click shutdown or restart, it appears the shutdown process starts, the screen goes blue and the little circle keeps going round and round, but nothing happens even after 30 minutes.
Make sure you quit all your applications before shutting down.
And try resetting the SMC.

cannot reinstall windows 10 Technical preview after getting black screen at start. will not let format drive or install
you may need to use a DVD from an earlier version of Windows or slave the disk to wipe it with disk manager

Presario f700 black screen at start up,
presario f700 black screen at start up, if left to own it flashes hard drive light once fan starts then turns off the starts again can get it to stop this sequence by pressing certain keys but screen always stays black and remote screen does not turn on. Have tried removing memory, hard reset, removed ram, have tested hard drive out of device. Anything else I can try.
Book says 15secs for a hard reset, one post said 30secs, which is correctHi, 30 secs is the better of the two options there. I am assuming the Hard drive tested fine? You can try turning the computer on with out the hard drive in it and see if you atleast get some text saying not bootable device or if you are able to boot into BIOS. If this does not happen you can switch out the ram chips. (boot with one chip then take it out and boot with the other) see if these work. If these steps fail its more than likly more of a hardware issue with the systemboard.
While I may work for HP, my posts and replies are my own and should not be mistaken for statments made by HP as a whole. -
Is black screen for iPhone hardware or software problem
Is black screen for iPhone hardware or software problem.
Don't know until you troubleshoot. First step is a reset:
hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss) -
