Blacks in some pages and documents appearing transparent to desktop

Certain web pages, "advanced" pages like Sky's TV listings or even the google home page, show blacks and dark areas as transparent making them very hard to view. It also happens to pdf's viewed in Firefox and quicktime movies in firefox. The problem seems to be connected to the Win7 aero feature as when this is switched off the problem disappears, but not other application or browser is affected.

Thanks for the informative answer Yvan. I wonder if that's related to another issue: after installing iWork 09 I noticed some font modifications in my PDF files as well (big Headings ending off the page). Do you think that might be related? Any ideas of how to fix this?

As a suggestion, it would be more appropriate to create a custom new web part with the help of Search API in your scenario, there, we can create custom style more
freely than customizing on an existing web part.

Some GIFs and JPGs appearing with yellow "wash" when loading in Safari

Hi,
I've flicked through forums, google, and called my top graphics people but nobody can seem to help, or has ever even heard of, my issue.
Here it is in a nutshell:
Some GIFs and JPGs appear with a yellow "wash" when being loaded in Safari. I can confirm this is happening on 3 different Macs, and even on a PC running Safari.
Safari 3.1.1 on Windows XP
Safari 3.1.2 on Mac OSX 10.5.5
Here's some examples of it occurring:

You might need to refresh the page in Safari a couple of times to see the flicker but it's there.
I've tried:
- resaving images with and without "progressive" and "interlaced"
- a variety of different colour palettes
- taking a screenshot of the image, putting back into Photoshop and resaving
Has anybody seen this issue before? Unfortunately I can't go live with this site until I fix this very strange error.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

Totally independently from your current problem, Safari is cr@p. Dump it.
All Apple applications, from the Finder through Preview and iPhoto to Safari, assign Monitor RGB to ALL untagged images, even if they were created or saved in sRGB.
The only current properly color-managed web browser is Firefox 3.0.1. Just keep in mind that you have to enable color management deep inside the guts of Firefox.

OK, what you do is very simple indeed. Create a menu if you haven't already got one, and click on it so it appears in the editor window. Click and drag out a button rectangle and use the property inspector to add text to the button and include it in the button highlight. Set the target for the button and repeat the process for any other button you want to add. Make sure that you use the 'Settings' drop down box and assign the button navigation.
That's it.

As Don already pointed out, exactly what the recipient sees will depend on how they've set up their machine and what unnecessary 3rd party apps they might've installed to display attachments the way they want.
In theory, that is true. In practice, Attachment Tamer will cause more of your messages to show up as plain-jane icons on the other end. The problem is, after all, people running Outlook 2003 and 2007. These people likely aren't doing many system modifications.
If I were you, I'd use the free solutions provided above, save my money and let my recipients decide how they will handle their mail.

Wiki pages and document Search not working

I have lot of wiki pages and Documents in my site collection , I try to search those but its not working .
I tried to fix this issue .
I create a new search service application , and new content source with my new SharePoint site and start the continuous crawl.
after I create a new sup site as enterprise search center in my existing site collection , than I try to search my documents and wiki pages , but nothing is shown on my results , but I can see all other documents and wiki pages (its all posted in different
web application with site collections) because am the owner of all site collections , I got below error when I try to check the crawl logs in my new content source, please see the below log and let me know what I have to do now.

Are you using any AAM configureation ? If you check wiki age with absolute URL in crwal logs then what is the result ?

Hi, cannot drag to trash, get a message saying the item cant be moved to trash because it cant be deleted. I really dont know what theses are. The icon shows as excel but they are certainly not filenames I have used. I cant open them either and they dont show in finder under desktop but they are clearly sitting there!

Large black blemish on page and pasteboard

I am using CS3, InDesign ver. 5
I have 100 page document (a type book, part of a 440 page book), with a large, 1 x 3 inch, solid black blemish (a double streak) that extends from the top of the paste board into the document by 1.5 inches on one page. Sometimes it disappears, sometimes it reappears. I exported the file to a PDF (high quality for print). It was not visible in the PDF, but it printed (CreateSpace digital book printing).
The blemish cannot be selected, moved, etc.
The file has four layers. The blemish is mostly associated with one layer. However, when I turn that layer or all layers off, only the portion of the blemish inside the text box disappears. The portion that extends beyond the text frame on the page and on the pasteboard remains.
The blemmish appeared during a sneezing fit (allergies) while I was working on the document. I touched or clicked something, but I have no idea what.
I moved the text frame off the page and created a new, unlinked, frame. Most of the blemish moved with the original text frame (all that was inside the frame and part outside). I made a new frame and the blemish reappeared--now in two places: in its full size on the page, and most of it on the text frame on the pasteboard.
I deleted the page, created a new page, and created a new text frame. As I entered new text, the blemish reappeared.
I exported the file to Interchange Format. The blemish remained.
I deleted the InDesign Defaults and the Saved Data files. The blemish remained.
I can cover it with a frame filled with white: however, I have no idea if that will actually work when the book is printed. And if it does, I cannot remove that portion that covers the text.

I exported the file as text. The shape was gone when the text file was placed into a new document.
Then, I reapplied the fonts to the text - the named font was applied to all paragraphs in the font's group. No character.
The default size was 12pt. I selected all the text in the frame and increased the font size to 15pt, and BINGO! It's BAAACK! It remained as I undid each action step by step.
I suspect that the blemish is triggered by a character in one of the fonts. It doesn't seem to go away when fonts are changed back to known-normal fonts. If these fonts are creations of non-major font foundries, or if they have been modified by a mad font scientist, then the problem is likely some miscalculation in displaying the font.
If you really want to track down the source of the problem, I'd suggest starting with a new file, set the default font to a known safe one, type new text samples for one set of glyphs, copy and paste the glyph set to make enough for your samples, then save that file, then save as a new name. In a copy, apply a suspect font to one glyph set. Save As a new name that indicates the applied font.
Open the first-saved file, save with the name of the second font you want to test. Then apply that font to the second set of glyphs. Save again.
Go through this routine until you've got a set of files that have all the glyph sets, but only one font applied in each file. If the blemish hasn't appeared, start back in the first file with an applied font. Select the text with the applied font and change the point size to 15pt. If that doesn't cause the problem, save the file as a new file with 15pt in the name.
Repeat this test for all files. If the blemish appears, then you'll have an idea of which font causes it.
If the blemish hasn't appeared, start over with the first file that has the first-applied font at 15pt. Save it to a new name. Select the second group of glyphs and apply the second font. Save. If no blemish, increase the font size of the second group of glyphs to 15pt. If no blemish, save, and repeat with all other files, aplying the n-th font to the n-th glyph group. Save to new names. Change font to 15pt. Etc.
If still no blemish, start over with the first file. Save to a new name. Apply each n-th font to each n-th glyph group, all in this one file. If this doesn't display the blemish, try the same strategy with the remaining files.

I want to force SSL on some pages and NO SSL on other pages

I have looked at webflow and it is not obviously clear to me how to:
1. Enforce NON SSL on some pages ... (like search page, catalog, product list pages ) to improve performance.
2. Force SSL on other pages .... (like account edit page, beyond the obvious checkout pages)
One way I was thinking off was to use a URL rewrite intercept to do that.
The webflow seems to be a mechanism to build page flows enforcing SSL on the next page called. But what if the user is the person directly clicking on a link that should be SSL'ed say Account Update.
Currently ... we are ssl'ing the whole site.

I have it within an ascx control which appears on each page. Alternatively, within the common.master.master codebehind page load event. I think the problem with the webflow is that you need to know which page a user is coming from to be able to take them into (and then out of) secure mode. This code ensures that certain pages are secure and others are not.
Also, Fname in the above example is the name of the page that is being requested:
Fname = mid(Request.Path, Request.Path.LastIndexOf("/") +2,len(Request.Path) - (Request.Path.LastIndexOf("/") +1) )

Internet wont load some pages and drops

Dear,
A problem occured when updating my osx maverick to 10.9.3. Since then, some pages won't load (some do at some point, sometimes they don't).
There are a lot of topics from other users which suggest turning off ipv6. I tried that but then the connection totally fails. My ipv4 is set as using dhcp. I tried renewing this when ipv6 if either on or off. But that doens't solve the problem. With ipv6 on, i have the problem as first described.
I also cleared my preference list in the library, changed firewall setting, proxy setting, dns settings and so on but nothing seems to be solving my problem. I have put every setting back to what is was after testing.
I know this has nothing to do with the incoming network, since a friend of mine could connect to any website using his windows computer.
Has this occured to anyone else? And does anyone have a solution in order to connect to all sites?
Maybe interesting: sites like google, facebook, youtube work. Other sites, like this one, imdb and all other less frequently visited sites won't load.

Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with Safari on your Mac. I recommend resetting Safari for an issue like this.
You can reset Safari by going to Safari > Reset Safari and then selecting the option to "Remove all website data." This will clear your Safari History and Top Sites, so I recommend bookmarking the sites you would like to save before resetting Safari. You can find more information at the following link (the title of this article says Mountain Lion, but the steps are the same for Mavericks):

How can I lock Pages and Numbers files on my desktop?

I have a Numbers spreadsheet and some documents in Pages that I'd like to 'lock' or password protect. The old Appleworks program used to allow me to 'lock' files. Is there a way to do this using Lion or is there a simple app I can use?

There is a way to do that in both Pages and Numbers in Snow Leopard; I don;t have Lion available to see if that was carried forward to it.
In SL, with the document open click the Inspector button in the toolbar for the document. In the Inspector window, click the leftmost icon in its toolbar ("document inspector" in the popup tooltip), If a Pages document, also then click the Document button below that icon.
Then, at the bottom of the window look for an item "Require password to open" - checkmark that, and you'll be prompted to set a password.

Some text and toolbar appears in chinese

Some of my text in my toolbar and in completed searches appears in chinese. I have tried deleting these languages from my computer
but with no luck. Any ideas anyone please?

Slow at initial loading of some Pages - and iTunes Store is slow as well...

Since some days, I noticed that Safari loads some of the pages very slowly, such as Ebay, Appleinsider, and also Apple.com. Once you are on a page, the navigation inside is mostly quite normal - also the download speed is within it's usual range. But inital loading of a lot of sites takes almost a minute's time. Also iTunes Store loads very very slowly. I freshly installed 10.4.8 recently to (successfully) fix another problem I had with my AirportExpress, so I frankly would not know what setting might be affected here. Did anyone experience the same issues? Thanks a lot.

Network type problems have been reported with 10.4.8. The usual remedy has been either to "repair permissions" using Disk Utility in your Utility folder, or to reapply the 10.4.8 combined update, applying permissions after the install/restart.
One other remedy for Network type problems that has seemed to help others:
Go to your System Preferences>Network panel: make sure in the Show drop down menu in Network Configuration, your primary cable protocol, in your case "airport" is first on the list (you can drag it there). Other protocols you don't use ought to be unchecked. Then in the Show menu, select "airport". In the airport panel remove any wi-fi locations you don't use (if you travel and use wi-fi, there's a tendency to accumulate these things). Lastly, in the TCP panel>DNS servers, enter 4.2.2.2, which is a Verizon number available to the public. Select "apply".
One last thing, make sure your Airport version is up-to-date - 6.3. You can check this via Software Update in System Preferences.

Text is running together on some pages and not others. i've tried no squint and playing around with text options in tools. I can't strike a good balance.

I can't seem to figure out how to have a full screen experience with larger text and everything is in proportion. Either the right end of lines are chopped off, or lines of text are running into each other and out of boundaries.

== I installed FF earlier this evening. I've had FF before and my gripe was the inability to set a certain magnification. I found the no squint add on and it seems very good, but somewhere I'm getting stuck. I've been fiddling with no squint, font options in tools and size and resolution settings for my monitor.

i'm also having major CPU problems w/ FF 29.0.1. when i restart the app it calms down again but after loading tabs it steadily climbs up to 100% after not too long. i have checked out the 2 CPU links/articles above and do all the basic troubleshooting and tips, but with all the FF tools & add-ons isn't there some sort of CPU monitor that has the ability to display which extensions/scripts are hogging the CPU? Activity Monitor on Mac just shows the total used by the app. it's impossible in my case to efficiently disable dozens of add-ons & scripts, restart, and test each one by one b/c it can take several hrs before the CPU starts to spike high again. i have no time for this.

I'm a web designer and I want to test pages in both explorers but sometime i enter a URL in IE and Firefox opens and loads the page. How can I stop this happening?
