Blocky upscale in After Effects 7.0

Hi,
I am creating an animation using After Effects 7.0 and I got a little problem. If I upscale a picture, it doesn't use bicubic scaler (like in photoshop), only the nearest neighbor method, which looks really bad at some scenes. Here is a screenshot:
Used image is here: http://www.wanderingmind.org/wp-content/themes/thesis_16/custom/rotator/sample-1.jpg
Quality is selected to be Best. What is the problem?
Thanks

Hi,
No it doesn't. You are confusing viewport zoom with scaling. In your
first example, zoom is set to 200%, in your other it's 100%.
Yes, it does and you still misunderstand me, I don't confuse viewport zoom (which is also blocky but that's no problem) with scaling that can be set at Transform. I have just increased viewport zoom at my first example picture to show you a close look at blocks. I rendered two frames to show you the difference:
This was produced by After Effects CS4 (trial), upscaled from 100 to 471. Project image size was D1/DV PAL (1.07) [720x576].
This was produced by After Effects 7.0, upscaled from 100 to 471. Project image size was D1/DV PAL (1.07) [720x576].
I exported these two frames using Composition -> Save Frame As... -> File... (Ctrl+Alt+S). Quality was set to Best in both cases.
Well, whatever, feel free to file your own dark desires and ideas as a feature request:

As soon as they include their features into older versions through patches and updates and don't force me to spend a lot of money for a single feature, I'll post there.

  • Error using Detail-preserving Upscale module in After Effects

I'm wanting to try and use the upscale module to upscale a video from 1080p to 4k, but it keeps crashing. Whenever I try, it'll seem to be trying for a few minutes, but then I get the error message "After Effects can't continue: An output module stopped responding. The file may be damaged or corrupted." But this doesn't make any sense because I know the video (a 30 second clip) plays just fine.

You haven't told us much to help with troubleshooting. We'll need to know EXACT version number of AE (not "CC 2014", but actual 13.2.0.49-style version number), format of clip, codec of clip, and lots more!

  • Can't find Detail preserving upscale effect in After Effects CC

    Hello house,
I recently needed to use the detail preserving upscale effect for a project but it seems my version of After Effects CC does not have it. How can I go about getting it please?
    Thank you.

What is the exact version number?

  • Blocky footage from ProRes 4444 file when imported in After Effects CC on Windows 7

I'm running the latest version of After Effects CC before the 2014 update.  When I bring in a ProRes File I noticed the footage had turned Blocky and Alias'd.  Extremely noticeable on black round edges, making the high quality footage look awful.
HAs anyone experienced this, or seen this before... I almost didn't notice it.

    Noticed a few things.
Still don't know if there have been any changes to the footage in the comp because none of the properties of the footage layer are revealed. Try selecting the footage layer and press the U key twice to reveal any changes made to the footage.
Not understanding the composition size at all. Why is it non standard? 1920 X 817 will NOT work for any kind of standard delivery method AND, if the footage is standard size, 1920 X 1080, the footage will be imported with a default position of 960 X  408.5 causing every pixel in the footage to be re-interpreted and cause a loss of clarity.
The properties of the original footage are not shown or known. We don't know if the footage is interlaced or what size it is or what the frame rate is.
You have not given us any information on how you are bringing ProRez footage into a Windows machine. Did you download some 3rd party software to import the footage?  If so, what has been installed?
Most likely, the problem is the placement of the footage so that the footage is not precisely lined up on the pixel grid (see item 2). Anything from Compression to 3rd party software could also be causing interpretation problems.

  • What's New In After Effects CC

I made a overview of some of the cool new features in After Effects CC
What new features are you most excited about? The intergration with C4D looks amazing! Wonder how Andrew Kramer will kick it up a notch with Element 3D? Both are great plugins.

All of this is cool, which one revs me up the most?
Probably the Detail-preserving Upscale effect, echoing the amazing new upscaling ability of the current Photoshop. I wind up mixing in all kind of footage from who knows where, attached who knows how to who knows what, and it will be great to be able to use it more readily even if a full "standard" size down from the project.

  • Poor quality in after effects

I have been editing a project for the last few weeks and (stupidly) this is the first time I have watched the edited footage in full screen.  Everything I messed with in AE is very blocky looking compared to the raw DV footage I started with.  My settings are as such:
I go to Coposition -> make movie, and save as an uncompressed avi.  Any ideas?

    >
i have a similar problem - maybe one of you can help me?
    I have
created a 320x240 composition with images etc.
Now i want to produce this in
high res so i created a HD720 comp and placed the 'layout' comp inside
    and scaled it up.
But i am losing all the resolution even though
the images i have used are having anough resolution for a 720p!!!!
    Where
are the settings to pass through the resolution in the scaled
composition? What am i doing wrong?
If you scale an image up from 240 pixels tall to 720 pixels tall, you will lose quality.
Yours is a special case, though, since you have scaled some images down to 240 and then want to scale them back up to 720 (their original size). If that's all that's going on, then you can collapse transformations so that the two scaling operations are collapsed into one and no quality is lost.
Here's an excerpt from the page in After Effects Help that describes  collapsing  transformations :
"Collapsing transformations can, for example, preserve resolution when a layer is scaled down by half in a nested composition, and the nested composition is scaled up by a factor of two in the containing composition. In this case, rather than performing both transformations and losing image data in the process, one transformation can be performed—doing nothing, because the  individual transformations cancel each other."
That said, you should really design your composition at the frame dimension of your largest output. Planning your work and starting with the right settings can save you a lot of headaches later.

  • After Effects 7 refuses to import transitions made in Premiere Pro 2

    Hello,
I want to import the timeline I created in Premiere into After Effects for Rendering (the renders always turn out clearer while Premiere makes them blocky and the text unreadable, and the text was part of the Raw video). but After Effects won't import some of the transitions I put in (eg; tumble away) but they import other transitions like crossfade just fine, what can I do to fix this? Or to get premiere to export nice and clear like After Effects does?
    Thank you

    >but After Effects won't import some of the transitions I put in (eg;
    >tumble away) but they import other transitions like crossfade just
    >fine, what can I do to fix this?
Nothing. Some Premiere effects simply have no equivalent in AE and thus cannot be "translated". Which effects get imported/ exported is certainly clearly spelled out in the manual and I'm sure it says something like "only dissolves and dip to color....". As for your export issue - please let us know to what format you are actually try to export. There's just too many variables to this game. From what it sounds like, my initial guess would be that you are not using correct field settings, but could of course be other things as well.

  • New to Adobe After Effects (CS4)

I'm relatively new to AE and have a very basic question:  Can After Effects import and work with long files - 1+ hours or more?
I have always thought of AE as a tool for small clips less than 10min. but I'm new to this and really do not know.
I am working on a research project with Harvard University and the University of Michigan.  They are studying educational practices in classrooms around the country.  These "observations" are conducted remotely using a Web Interfaced Camera.  The files I am being given are lower quality ASF files.
In some cases the identity of certain students must be masked - I can do this work in Premiere Pro.  In other cases the entire video needs an "identity concealing" treatment - these are the files I'm hoping to edit within AE.  I'm looking at using Toonit's Rotoscoping filter for this.  When I use Toonit in PPro it is a very slow (many hours) process.
Also, any advise on working with ASF files would be very helpful.

    > I'm relatively new to AE and have a very basic question:  Can After Effects import and work with long files - 1+ hours or more?
    Yes.
    >  I'm looking at using Toonit's Rotoscoping filter for this.
Why? This is very basic work that can be done in After Effects with no additional software.
For each shot, use motion tracking on a person's face, apply that motion-tracking data to a solid layer, use that layer as an adjustment layer, and apply the Mosaic effect to the adjustment layer. This gives you a rectangular blocky/pixelated region over the person's face. If you want to be more refined, you can draw a mask on the adjustment layer to match the shape of the face and get into more detailed rotoscoping.
If you were using After Effects CS5, I'd recommend using Roto Brush to do much the same thing.

  • How to Render a TIFF image sequence with After Effects or Premiere

So I shot a timelapse in RAW using my D5200.  Developed the images, imported into after effects to make a composition at 1080p 24fps, the clip is 15 seconds long.  Then I rendered the clips a few ways and none of them are what I want:
I used the H.264 first, its just pixelated and blocky, doesn't retain a smooth resolution. H.264 output an MP4 that was 6.5 MB.
Then I tried lossless and it output an AVI which is awesome resolution but the file is 2 gigs! Not even VLC media player will play it smoothly without buffering.
Last I tried H.264 BluRay which output an M4V file which is 45 MB and I can't get it to play.
So now I'm here asking you all what the way to go is.  When I download films, I will aim for a 1-2 gig 720p or 1080p file on roughly 2hr films.  The resolution is great, the audio is great and the file like I said is only 1.5gigs average.  So what are the rendering settings I should be using to get a file like this? Should I be importing it into Premiere Pro first or what?
    -Thanks
    Bruno
For Reference, here was my workflow:
I generally followed an Adorama Rich Harrington Time-Lapse youtube video on workflow which was:
Developed the Raw files in Camera Raw
Used the Image Processor to create the Tif files
Imported into After Effects as a TIF sequence
    Interpreted the sequence as 24fps
Changed the Composition settings to 1080p 24fps
Then did the rendering as detailed above

    1. You don't need to export your TIFF sequence so as to import it into After Effects, you can import RAW image sequence into After Effects directly. Camera RAW will start automatically on importing. What is more, you will be able to change your Camera RAW settings at any time you want inside your AE project: in Project panel select your RAW image sequence, right-click, choose Interpret Footage -> Main... In the dialog box click More Options... button (at bottom left), and Camera RAW opens.
    2. Do NOT export to H.264 out of After Effects directly. If you need to export your composition to H.264, export it out of Adobe Media Encoder. Start from HDTV preset. If your goal is to upload your media file on e.g. YouTube, done. If you want to play it back on your computer, but your mediaplayer can't playback it in real time, start to decrease bitrate settings. Keep in mind that modern AVCHD cameras shoot with 28 Mbps, first AVCHD camcorders were shooting with 17 Mbps, YouTube preset in Adobe Media Encoder sets bitrate to 10 Mbps, Vimeo preset - to 8 Mbps.
Choose VBR, 2 Pass so as to benefit from better quality out of smaller file size.
See this The Video Road blogpost on Understanding Colour Processing and benefits of Render at Maximum Depth option.
    3. If you're planning to use your After Effects composition in Premiere Pro project, you can use Adobe Dynamic Link. If your After Effects composition is quite complex, render a Digital Intermediate out of After Effects and import it into Premiere Pro. See this discissuon in AE Forum on some production codecs comparison.
P.S. See also this FAQ: What are the best export settings? entry.

  • After Effects CC slow renders on iMac (low CPU Usage?)

    Hi,
i have an fully specced late 2013 27" iMac for working with the Creative Cloud Programms. At the moment i only have 8GB installed because of problems with my 32 GB Ram kit. I have an internal SSD for the OS and Programms, an 256GB USB3 SSD for Chache Files and a Raid 0 for my Source Files.
I am now rendering an 7min long movie shot on an Red Epic in 5K and 4K to an ProRes422HQ 1080p File out of After Effect. I mainly used the "Levels" Effect and an Plug-In called "Film Convert". No crazy animations or effects. My Render time is about 18 hours (it`s nearly finished, so this are no wrong calculations by AE).
Are this normal render times that should be expected when working with such large source files?
What makes me wonder is that the Activity Monitor show only bout 40% CPU Usage (see attached screenshot), shouldn`t that be maxed out?
I have to render out a few more similar clips, so optimizing this would be great.
Thanks a lot for the help!

    Hi,
thanks  a lot for your answers!
I was too thinking about the HDD setup but i think mine is pretty decent. My source footage is on an 3 HDD Raid-0 with 550 MB/s read and write, i have an 250 GB Scratch/Chache SSD in an USB 3 UASP enclosure thats around 400 MB/s read and write and my project files are on an external USB 2 drive (will change to USB 3 soon). Only thing is that i am outputting my files to the Scratch/Chache SSD right now because i am still waiting for my USB 3 "Output" drive. But i don`t think the Chache is beeing used while rendering, or could that be the mistake?
The GPU is this one: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB and should be ok i think.
I hope my new 32GB Ram kit arrives soon, so i can test if more RAM helps.
I have an 4K HD (Quad 1080p) Composition which contains mostly 4K HD source footage mixed with some downscaled 5K HD shots and some upscaled 2K HD Shots. The comp is mainly a simply edit from premiere with a Levels effect on every clip and the 3rd party film convert plugin plus an Unsharp Mask on the whole comp on adjustment layers. I tried turning those off too but it wasn`t speeding up much the rendering. I have no Ray-traced comp.
I left the Render Settings to "Best Settings" for the final rendering. Altough for preview purposes i was putting the resolution to "quater" in the Render Settings and it took only about 30min for the whole comp to render.
In the Output Module i was chosing ProRes422HQ as a codec and 1920x1080 as output resolution.
The 4K and 5K shots are looking pretty good when rendering with the Render Settings turned to "quater" resolution but the 2K shot are looking terrible then. Could the long render time be a problem with how after effects handels the de-bayering of the R3D Files?

  • How to combine different projects to create final clip in after effect?

    Hello;
i am newbie and learning adobe after effects cs6. I have downloaded  different templates from web and edited them according my wish and now i  want to create final movie by combining all the clips.
Some clips/projects are with different resolution, i have rendered all projects separately and created individual .mov clips.
Now i want to create final movie by combining all the clips.
As  i stated above i am completely newbie so please guide me with details, hope you guys wont mind it.
Iam working with adobe after effects cs6.

    > one last question how to resize the movies?
There are lots of ways in After Effects to resize things, including using the Scale property that is on every layer or using the Detail-preserving Upscale effect.
Please, do go through the basic learning materials that I linked to.

  • Scaling - Premiere or After Effects CS4?

I'm working on a documentary with several still images.  When changing the scale and position to add a little motion, is there any difference in quality between using Premiere CS4 or After Effects CS4?  I'm using PSD files in Premiere, but should I be doing this in After Effects?  If so, how well does the Dynamic Link feature work for this?
Does it make any difference if I'm upscaling video instead of stills?
This project is HDV 720p 30fps.  I have the latest Adobe updates.
    Thanks,
    JB

Absolutely, and "precise" is the right way to describe it. After Effects works with subpixel precision, meaning that it can subdivide a pixel into even smaller increments--specifically, 1/65,536th of a pixel. Any spatial properties, like position or scale, use subpixel precision when transformations are applied. As a result, effects such as scaling a video or a photo will look sharper, and motion will look smoother if animation is created. I'm not positive--as I've found no evidence supporting or to the contrary--but I don't believe that Premiere's scaling and motion "engine" uses subpixel precision. Technically, then, After Effects is more capable, but practically, I'm not sure it always makes a big difference.
Read about subpixel rendering in After Effects here...

  • I am trying to install after effects, but no matter what version I try to download, there is always a different error not allowing me to open or use the program after I have already installed it.

I have recently repurposed an iMac from late 2009 as an editing machine, and have been trying to install preferably After Effects CS6.  When I install and try to open it for the first time, the program quits unexpectedly and continues to do the same every time I try to reopen the program.  After no luck experimenting trying to fix the problem, I attempted to download the trial of After Effects CC 2014 to see if the problem was with the computer or with the application.  After installing CC, there was another error when I attempted to open it.  My final attempt was taking After Effects CS5 from an old hard-drive and attempting to open it on the iMac.  When I open CS5 I am greeted with another error message telling me to reinstall After Effects.  After reinstalling I get the same message.
I am confused to whether my computer can handle After Effects, or there is another error occurring.
    Any help would be appreciated.
